Hey, I remember you mentioning on your IG something about two types of popular artists and one being good at social media and the other being good at art or something like that (I can't really remember lol). But it got me thinking, any tips for how to be good at social media? Cuz I'm certainly not even after posting art for six years lol

Heya!

What I meant by that is that there are traits that allow you to grow on social media, and traits that determine what a highly skilled artist is, and those traits do not always necessarily overlap.

I've seen so many amazing artists that post artwork that blow my head off, and yet they don't have many likes. On the other hand, some artists at the same skill level who draw more popular things will get way more attention.

That is not to say that either is the correct way to create art, but there is definitely a formula to social media that is in play.

There are a lot of posts about how to grow a social media account, particularly on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram art spheres, and imo you really need to examine what you want from your art before jumping into social media mode

The stuff you create to pander to social media might not be art that you want to create at all - I'm lucky, because I am less artist more storyteller, and what I enjoy is telling jokes and silly stories to liven up people's moods :] this, of course, conveniently does well on social media. On a personal note, I have a history of being a recluse and not connecting well with people, and art is my way of trying to communicate my feelings, one way or another.

So of course, if you draw for any reason other than my own, my approach to art and it's relation to social media might be inappropriate for you.

All that being said, if u take a look at those "get big on social media" videos they always cite the same few points... And you can look into that, for sure, but this video sums up how I feel about all that.

I spent like 20 minutes drafting words after the above paragraph, but I really ended up regurgitating sentiments from the video... So really don't listen to me, listen to that video

EDIT:

I just realised I didnt actually answer the question with my anecdotal experience, so here's a list of things I did

1. Posted like 3 doodles a day on social media

I did this for 6 months on a side account on Twitter recently and got the account to 11k followers... And I did this for 3 months on Instagram a few years ago and I think got 3.5k followers. Of course, do not spam maliciously and make sure your art is still of good quality, but for those artworks I posted quickly, I did not colour, and mostly did clean sketches. This also trains you in the matter of line confidence haha. Again, this worked for me because of my set of circumstances (love for the media, want to tell stories, simple art style)

2. Focus on my favourite aspects of media

This helps with respect to burnout - kinda hard to burnout when you love what you're making! For me, it's character interactions and comics. I want to see my blorbos kiss and if I'm not the one drawing it who will?!

3. Interact with people

People eat up work that they can interact with. A choose your own story situation, one of those like/rt to strip a character 😭 those do numbers for a reason.

Additionally, if you post stuff people love, people will respond to it with comments, maybe their own headcanons, adding on to the work... I've gone into long looong Twitter thread conversations with people who added onto my ideas that I threw up onto the screen and I think it's also a nice thing to do to respond to positive comments haha... I'm not very good at this (read: bad at communication)

Emi, Epel and Harveston

Emi and Epel have the potential to be quite the kindred spirits. Two country people trying to figure it out in the big world, trying to find their place with rules unfamiliar to them.

Like, Emi's home wasn't as remote as Epel's is, but she did grow up on a farm and in a pretty small town - like, to her, escalators are kinda exotic, because she'd only see them in the big town.

Plus there's all these rules of behavior at NRC / Twisted Wonderland that Emi is just very unfamiliar with and has to adjust to, somewhat similar to Epel.

Like, Emi comes from a relatively low hierarchy society. Like yes, there's authority figures, but she's also used to addressing her teachers either as ‘teach’ or by their first names. So she'll probably be coming across ruder than intended especially at first, just because she's not used to all the more respectful forms of address.

Also, the concept of having to respect someone just because they're on a higher grade than her is kinda alien to her, at least to the extent some people at NRC seem to expect it. Like yeah Emi's used to the general ‘younger people looking up to more grown people’ vibe, especially at school & with kids, but not quite in the same way.

Which is yet another thing throwing a wrench into the whole ‘how am I even supposed to act and behave in this world’ problem that Emi's having in general - and which I feel like would resonate with Epel to some extent, too.

However.

All of Epel's gender essentialism will absolutely get Emi to raise her hackles. Like she'll be right there with Vil being all "and what's wrong with something being girly, huh? And why are you gendering all these things anyway?"

Like, Emi's not too often motivated by spite, but like in that meme, if the teacher's asking for "strong boys to carry the chairs" or something like that, she'll be itching to join in, because why should this be about gender anyway, and surely she's no worse than any random guy is?

(Plus if there's a conversation going on with any sort of "all guys this" "all girls that", Emi will be all too happy to butt in with counterexamples and reminders of individual nuance - even if it maybe doesn't make her always look the best to let people know that she sure ain't a natural homemaker, for example. And once they're together with Jamil, she'll definitely be letting folks know how much better he's at cooking and other things than she is.)

Going back to that "growing out in the boonies" bit tho: Harveston would just totally break Emi ngl.

Like at first, it’s like, oh a fun snow adventure to see Epel’s home, oh this place looks interesting, are those some actual mountains, and oh it’s so nice enjoying some proper snowy landscapes (girl’s lowkey wondering if maybe she should ask if they’ve got some skis around that she could borrow, because it's been a while).

(It's been a bit too long since I read the event for me to remember all the things they get up to, but Emi could totally join Epel in teaching the others some snow activities, though sledding's gonna be new to her as well. Or just instigating snow fights (if Emi isn't too worried about some of the folks present *cough* Sebek and Jade *cough* taking things a little too seriously).)

But then there's some of those words and place names that sound so strangely familiar to her, translation magic or not... Weird, huh?

And the first time Emi realizes that some of the foods are very reminiscent of the things she used to eat at home… Girl’s gonna be fighting back tears over her salmon soup and oven pancakes. (It's not like the canon event company is the sort to encourage her to be openly vulnerable, either, so she'll be trying so hard to tamp down all the feels and the wistfulness.)

The opposite of those women laughing alone with salad memes I guess?

Though she will also make sure to ask for the recipes, if she can just get herself together enough to do so without her composure cracking.

Might just have to make the request via Epel later on, to be safe.

omg i agree he's keeping a public insta because it just looks cooler when 46k ppl are following you i guess. makes you look like hot commodity when you're single. he used to shoot his shot a lot more on insta when he was playing with ig models and stuff by following and liking posts but with very low success rate might i add. makes me think was he delusional thinking an ig model with 500k or millions of followers would go for him over the other more popular athletes and super rich dudes dming her. idk i feel like if one of those stereotypical looking ig models responded to him he would be down to date them if the personalities matched.

The only big influencer I’ve seen give Nolan 1% of attention was that Paige Lorenzo girl. I know she liked 1-2 of his post, vice versa (she initiated first I believe too). Dont think much happened, since I’m pre sure after that small ordeal she started dating a tennis player. Also she’s known to over share and expose her partners at a point too lol.

On the real I just do not think he’s ever made a girl a priority, for whatever of his own personal reason. Cause he definitely is able to get girls, even if they aren’t big influencers, he could still bag someone. He wasn’t even taking girls seriously, even at his “peak”, so that also says something.

Also naturally if any guy/girl you find someone attractive also aligns with you it’s a big bonus, and it makes sense why you’d pursue. Though let’s be real here most influencers majority of the time they’ve got the looks and then the personality goes downhill. Which makes me thinks yes he cares about looks, but if your personality is bland to the point talking to a wall is even more interesting, good luck.

some of the reasons why you should switch to linux: (yes i know i am referring to many different distros by just linux for simplicity)

free yourself from the shackles of microsoft/apple big corporations suck (hot take i know) and the more you can do to not support them the better. these two in particular that control the vast majority of desktop OS user share are notorious for monopolistic and anti-consumer behavior. right to repair is important.

hardware restrictions are bullshit if your computer is old, chances are windows 11 or the latest version of macOS runs like ass. in fact, it might not even be able to run them (tpm 2.0 chip anyone?). if it has a BIOS, you can put linux on it and usually make things run significantly faster. also yes, you can install linux on apple silicon (its called asahi linux)

don't like it? change it. the company that sells you something shouldn't dictate how you use their product. there are a million different linux distros that are infinitely customizable. a computer is a tool that you can shape to function exactly how you want it, and linux does this better than anything else.

open source software rules kinda ties back into freeing yourself from corporate shackles... open source means that anybody can contribute their ideas or time to the project - usually for free. oss doesn't get shuttered in favor of a fancy new version or get plagued by bloating or advertisments. pretty sweet.

learn to computer real good! a large proportion of jobs these days require a level of general computer profiency, and daily driving linux is a great way to learn these skills. the age of over simplified touchscreen centric UI/UX is here and it is awful. terminal isn't scary guys it just takes time to learn...

these are just a few of the big reasons, and i will not stop preaching the wonders of linux.

As a result, famine has "eaten" our bodies. Due to the intense hunger, we eat flour that is infested with weevils and insects.
