I've been sitting on this ever since the chapters came out but Kiriwo vs Iruma and Azz was actually a really good section? Both from a technical and a storytelling standpoint it was top notch and is an excellent case study of how far Osamu Nishi's writing has come

First off, its the first time both Iruma and Kiriwo are meeting face to face after the events of the Battler Party. And it only took 300-ish chapters. Of course its going to be impressive, but I kind of want to focus on what I really really love about these two chapters.

From a technical analysis, I absolutely adore the double page spread with Kiriwo breaking the panel to lean over and devour Iruma. Demons are the most powerful when they are their greediest and not even the foundations of the medium can stop Kiriwo. I also absolutely adore how the hand pointing into his mouth lands right over Iruma's terrified face, the outstretched hand as well boxing him in with no way to escape. It breaks the natural flow of reading manga, forcing readers eyes to jump from the first panel to the last immediately. Even the speech bubbles which also break the panels to bleed into the next are boxing Iruma in, leaving only Kiriwo as the only option. He's right. Right here. Into his mouth. That's the only direction the manga allows him to go. Not even Azz, who is logically right behind Iruma on the other side of the barrier, can't be seen. Its just them.

One thing that Mairuma likes to emphasizes is eyes. Nishi likes putting in a lot of close ups of the face but eyes specifically is something she puts a lot of focus on. Of course, eyes are the only reliable way to tell if someone has returned to origins but eyes also change according to wicked phase. They are the windows to the soul, and whenever a hype moment occurs, the eyes are almost always a focal point to enhance the action.

The latter half of 303 really ramps this imagery up as eyes become one of the main focus points of the sequence. Iruma's watery eyes when he asks if its really Kiriwo, the concealment and subsequent focus on Baal's eyes as he looms over Princes Shura revealing his motives (also Shura covering her face up till Baal "saves" her is an interesting symbolic choice i might write about), the ever present return to origin markings on Kiriwo's eyes after declaring his intentions, and that final page is all about eyes. My favourite is the hiding of Azz's eyes as he breaks the barrier only to reveal them as he boldly says he'll stay by Iruma's side, eyes finally coloured in when up till that point in the chapter it was left white.

Speaking of panels though, Kiriwo is allowed to break past the gutters and invade other panels. His single minded devotion to consuming Iruma allows him to bend the laws to manga and lean right over. So logically, the next page where Azz saves Iruma, Azz who is consumed by devotion and is perhaps even more enamored with Iruma would do the same, no?

Nope.

Despite everything, Azz is still trapped within the story and its confines. Not even his words break through the boundaries. The best he can do is close the gap between the gutters, squeezing the panels together as close as he can. He still lacks critical information and Kiriwo has and no matter how much he tires, without that he will always be a step behind his senior. Even all the power in the world will not change that Suzuki Iruma is a fragile, fragile human.

As if to rub salt into an already gaping wound, Kiriwo's speech bubble at the end of the chapter literally shuts down Iruma's protests. Kiriwo is in control of the situation and his words take over the page. He's also drawn to be taller than Azz who is canonically about 10-15 cm taller

Control seems to also be a big theme/determining factor for whose words are allowed to transcend the metaphysical boundaries boxing them in because who else would be the one to quite literally dominate the next climatic moment than the unpredictable agent of chaos, Clara herself? The ringtone from her call quite literally cuts both Iruma and Kiriwo's words in half, drowning them out in her silliness. I remember seeing that a lot of people were upset that Clara interrupted Kiriwo but I argue that Clara is the perfect person for this? Master of funtimes and such a wildcard that she managed to seduce Raim through pure innocence? You can not tell me that you didn't laugh at the stupid fonts that Misfit Scans used for Iruma's ringtone. (Thank you Flare, whoever you are. Because I laughed. So hard.)

Clara calling is also just the breather that the story needed. Yes, she inadvertently protected Iruma's secret, but she also the most emotionally mature out of the Love Trio which I think so many people forget. Clara is super smart when it comes to her boys, she knows that off on their own, they're bound to get caught up in their own heads worrying and agonizing in silence. Clara knew to call her boys after the Devilculum because it would had undoubtedly been stressful mingling among the upper ranks. Of course she was lonely and wanted to know how her soulmates were doing but even if she knows it or not, she is their emotional center and grounds them when they drift too far into their own self flagellation. But more importantly, she grounds the story in its genre. Lets not forget, Mairuma is a comedy series. Devilculum Arc was quite uncharacteristically somber for the series which runs on comedy of errors and misunderstandings galore. Sure, the beginning of the Arc was kind of funny but once everyone stepped into the venue, comedy became secondary to the plot.

Would it have been interesting to see what would have happened if Clara didn't call? Of course, yeah. But I think thats better left explored in fanfiction. At the end of the day, they're the Love Trio, they are a tripartite. Do not separate. And even unknowingly, Clara's protecting Iruma in her own way. And because of that, she is given the power to take over the page, filling it with images of Magitools Batara and her own silly creations, flower shaped speech bubbles framing the members as they work towards their own ambitions. She is the one that reminds Iruma of his own goals, who reminds him that there are demons at home who are waiting for him, and who he too is waiting for.

On a more aesthetic note though, I do like how Iruma's necklace this arc mirror's Kiriwo's collar. Its a very nice parallel but also acts as a way for Iruma to be connected to the people he's attending Devilculum with. The frilled collar on Ameri's dress and the Amosdeus Clan's rose brooch that both Azz and Amu have on their suits.

Idk how to end this ngl but I am completely normal about ch 303+4 the writing and set up is so so so good. I remember Misfits being so mad that others were translating the human part and I agree. Its so vital for the Love Trio and their relationship that their secrets are theirs to tell and not anyone elses. And the way these dynamics are portrayed through diegetic story telling is just perfect, I will never get over how good the KiriIru double spread is. Like those two pages specifically is my Roman Empire. I think about those pages on a hourly basis. I love that spread so much but 90% of what makes it so great is the surrounding context and the proceeding events. One day Nishi will probably top this and make me slobber all over her artistic storytelling but for today, I will continue to be consumed with thoughts about these two chapters.

One last thing but the fact that Iruma's secret got cockblocked from being revealed twice because of a phone call is just hilarious. Once is good enough but Narnia prioritizing a work phone call over warning his brother about what he sees as a great evil? He's so silly actually.

The new trailer was interesting. It did the thing I didn't really want it to do by spoiling story related stuff and not reveal the actual new Pokémon we're missing, but for what it's worth it seems like the story will be pretty content heavy. Let's look at some screens I took and speculate on some stuff: and a friendly reminder that nothing I say here has any bearing on leaks that are possibly out there, so if I guess anything in the future, it was just a guess:

This crystal tree is pretty suspicious. Like first of all, this appears even DEEPER into Area Zero than we've been before, assuming. Did something or someone plant it here? Is it the remains of an underground world? Could it possibly be related to a legendary? Not to mention the FULL crystallization of the tree, vs the partial crystallization of the trees up top. It's definitely not safe to be here for long.

Next, Z move pose! BBA is off the coast of Unova, but there's a lot of Alola rep here. I wonder if they're doing this because Bank will shut down soon and this will be where they want us to get Alola forms for the next 5 ish years before they discontinue Switch online services?

Next, this is Crispin and what appears to be proof the BBE4 won't be restricted to singular types. My friend pointed out that this could possibly be a sun team with Exeggcutor there. Wonder why they opted for Kanto when Alolan is there? (I mean besides Kanto being why).

Next, the reveal of, WHOA WHODA THUNK, Champion? Corrupted Kieran anyway. I made a post a few months back when they showed off this guy from the neck down and made the prediction he'd be champion- that's not entirely confirmed just yet, but it does seem to be pointing in that direction. It's not really that much of a W because GF can be very predictable with their writing.

Anyway he looks heavily corrupted- YEAH LETS GO VILLAIN ARC!!!! His hair is fully purple now- honestly I'd have preferred it with black like before, but it's probably symbolic of his corruption. My friend even pointed out his hair kinda looks like the Toxic Chains the Loyal Three have- theory time, whatever gave them the chain is also corrupting Kieran because look at him. No light left in those eyes. Just rage. Fun :D

Next we have this- I assume it's Penny or Mela tbh, because I saw from a ways back where it seems like Team Star's Giacomo has reintegrated into Naranja/Uva Academy. Maybe Penny has stopped dying her hair and grew it out or Mela is being super proper now or something. Could also be a completely unrelated character.

Lastly for major story stuff, this is cool poster material. Kieran's rage or possibly fear of Terapagos, Carmine's worry for her brother, Briar... I mean come on, she's a villain in waiting, look at her face. Idk if I'm too quick to claim Terapagos is evil though, because the anime has firmly planted him in Just A Little Guy territory and I don't think they'd want to ruin that image considering they've been in charge of hyping him up since Horizons first started.

But yeah, the culmination of everything we've been through in one image. Kinda exciting.

It's odd that they paired these trios together to me. Pokémon loves sprinkling breadcrumbs to tease at future projects, and these could pass for potential Legends starter trios.

But not for Unova.

Tepig and Snivy are the odd ones out here because it'd be kinda dumb to re use Unova starters for a Legends Unova game- now for Johto? Squirtle, Treeko, and Tepig COULD work, but Squirtle is also pretty close to home.

If I'm being real, this is probably nothing and just meant to highlight the starters across different generations coming home, with Tepig and Snivy being stand outs because this will be their first time being available on the Switch. Ever.

Synchronization? I guess? We can actually control a Pokémon. Conspiracy brain wants to say this is alluding to something, but I'm unsure. It's at least kind of neat because this has been a topic of various NPCs in the series for years. Those were probably just alluding to Mystery Dungeon games, but when Game Freak does something like this in DLC, it could hint at a future mechanic or possibly a feature in a future game.

Legendaries returning: I'm gonna be real, I'm not really all that excited by the prospect of yet another Legendary Bargain Sale that they've been doing since ORAS at this point. ORAS, USUM, Crown Tundra, and now Indigo Disk. At this point the legendaries are more common and accessible than some common pokemon like Furfrou or the elemental monkeys.

What's interesting to note are a couple of things:

1. DLC pokemon from SwSh are here too, including Kubfu. That's interesting, I wonder how it will evolve considering we needed the two towers in IoA last time? An NPC from the dojo?

2. Boi if you thought I wasn't gonna talk about the Unovan dragons- they didn't HAVE to single them out like that! They didn't have to. They did, though. I'm pretty sure we all know their next projects.

You may be saying "but it's too fast!" And I agree. They need to stop rushing things and take their time, but we all know they won't. All we can do is hope they actually try this time.

Anyways that was the last trailer for Indigo Disk. Maybe it's my severe depression talking, but I'm actually excited for Indigo Disk. It looks very content heavy and a bit prettier to look at than before. I hope it runs okay- I mean it won't, but I still hope it. I also hope this isn't as quick as Teal Mask was.

I'm not sure if you heard the news yet but rooster teeth is getting shut down by Warner Bros and Warner Bros is trying to sell RWBY off to another company at the moment

I hope that the people working at rooster teeth are able to get jobs or have jobs that they can help tie them over till they find new work for a while

And maybe if we're lucky when it comes to RWBY some company will maybe pick them up this year and will possibly get volume 10 by the end of next year or the year after that we'll just have to wait and see I'm not sure if they're still doing RWBY beyond that they were planning to do to cover some stuff that was happening with long and I but I hope the future for this franchise gets better and that this isn't the end

Hi there anon-chan. Yes, I have heard the news about RT shutting down. Heard it as soon as it came out yesterday. I just don’t have much to comment on the matter since I’m still pretty much processing it.

I mean, I’ve been hearing certain-certain Youtubers making bold statements about the end of RT for quite some time now; given all of its recent scandals. But even then, I still sorta wished to hold out on the belief that what they were saying wasn’t entirely true.

I mean, I know RT has definitely been under fire for a while but that was mainly due to the actions of some of the folks that were working in the company. And even then, I was of the opinion, that all the problematic people bringing the company down would just be removed, leaving RT itself to basically rebuild its reputation and get back in the good spirits of both its fans and potential investors; y’know what I mean?

Bottomline, I didn’t want to believe the possibility of RT shutting down since I thought they would’ve been able to make  a comeback somehow. At least when it comes to RWBY.

I’ll be frank with you m’fam. Outside of RWBY (and maybe Red Vs. Blue and Camp Camp; even though I haven’t caught up on those series since their earlier seasons), I have no other personal investment in RT.

I mainly followed RT for RWBY and the members of the CRWBY who worked on it. And even now, in light of the news of its upcoming shut down, I’m more concerned for what the future of RWBY will be beyond RT.

In respect to the CRWBY, I’m genuinely not that worried for them finding work since they’re all very talented creatives who are very, very good in their craft. So I definitely have high hopes for them scoring new work after RT. No doubts about that.

I have heard about WB trying to sell RWBY though; and this is where my main concern lies. I am worried about who RWBY will be sold to next or whether anyone will pick up the IP at all. I know some FNDM members like to hype up RWBY as this big deal series. However, the reality is, outside of the FNDM, RWBY honestly isn’t as well-known as some folks may think. Especially when you consider the fact that all the negatives of RWBY are talked about just as much; maybe even more so than the positives of it.

In the realm of potential buyers for RWBY, I don’t have high hopes for this because, isn’t this not what happened to  GenLock? Who do we blame for the fall of that IP? RT or WB? Didn’t they not “sell” GenLock over to HBO and they ended up butchering the hell out of its second season?

Either way, I don’t want the same to happen to RWBY. It’s already butchered enough by the way RT and its showrunners have been handling it since V3.

My one saving grace is a tweet from Dillon Goo. Apparently, he’s an animator who formerly worked on RWBY back in the days of Monty. Yesterday on Twitter, he expressed interest in purchasing the rights to RWBY to continue the series along with his team.

I don’t know how serious he is about this but I have seen some of his work and it’s actually quite good. I would rather RWBY go to the hands of someone who worked on the show and seems  genuinely passionate about continuing the series and its story as opposed to it going to some mega-money corporate conglomerate who are only interested in making money off the franchise and don’t really give a rat’s ass about its story or appealing to its fanbase.

As a long time fan of RWBY, all I want is for the series to be given to someone who actually gives a shit about RWBY.

Not just as a franchise name but as a story with characters and a world they genuinely enjoyed and wished to continue and expand upon out of a genuine love for it.  

Whether that’s continuing from where the original CRWBY Writers left off or rebooting the story from the ground up, I just want RWBY to be handled by creatives who care about it and want to tell a good story with it.

No senseless pandering that serve nothing for the story or appeasing the “woke crowd” or whatever!

Just telling a genuinely GOOD and CONSISTENT story with these characters and the world they live in.

I rather RWBY be handed over to a fan whose got the money, time and most importantly, the drive to keep the story going rather than another who just wants to milk it for its “brand”.

Ironically, this is what RT has sadly been doing with RWBY for the past couple of years. Since the dawn of its existence, RWBY has spawned books, comics, manga, videogames (console as well as mobile), its own movie (albeit it’s a crossover) and even its own Japanese anime adapation. All these different novelties that were supposed to help expand the world of Remnant and look how far it got it?

Pretty much nowhere because we got all of this expanded material for RWBY and we’re still nowhere close to finishing the main core story from the OG 3D animated series.

Speaking of, regarding the fate of RWBY Beyond, I’m not sure myself anon-chan. I was of the naive notion that since RWBY returning to RT and the debut of RWBY Beyond were announced prior to the news of RT’s shutdown that the company would still move forward with this move and it would mark the official send off for not only RWBY but the company that made it as well. That’s what I was hoping for and what I’m still hoping for since I don’t recall their being an official date for RT’s shut down.

We know the company is dead, we just don’t know the date of the funeral, basically. So until that time comes, I’m gonna innocently hope we still get to see RWBY Beyond before RT shuts down.

I can live with RT shutting down and even RWBY ending if RWBY Beyond is treated as the official final chapter to the story. But that’s just me.

I'm ambitious and can't stand my own failure. But I'm also lazy and a procrastinator which is a terrible combo. Somehow, someway you caught his attention.

Maybe it’d been because you encouraged a friend’s reckless behavior, maybe it’s because he saw you while visited Cannibal Town, just one way or another you met and he didn’t just brush you off.

It would take a long time before anything happened between you. Not just months, not just years, probably decades.

You sort of orbited around each other’s circles for a while and became tentative friends.

Then, one random day, you were doing something completely mundane when Alastor asked you, without looking up from his paper, if he could court you. Thus began your relationship.

Honestly, not much would change except Alastor would be in your life more.

Some mornings you would wake up to him having made breakfast, having welcomed himself into your home.

The biggest way he’d try to woo you would be to take you dancing and wow is he hard to keep up with.

Summary: The reader is reunited with Will after years when Ospreay finally signs with AEW.

It's AEW Revolution night and you're backstage in the locker room with everyone in the Don Callis family. Don is absent from the locker room, having had left a while ago claiming he had some business to attend to. Hobbs has just come back from his match and is rinsing off in the attached bathroom. And finally, Konosuke is busy lacing up his boots for his match.

"I finished pressing out your jacket, Konosuke." You lift his jacket off the ironing board and present it to him with a smile.

"Thank you, YN." Konosuke grins and takes the jacket from you.

You nod and fold up the board. "Mhm." You hum at him.

Konosuke slips on his jacket and you take a seat in an empty chair to hang out before his match. Takeshita keeps to himself and takes what time he has left before his match to hype himself up quietly. You smile at him are about to pull out your phone when someone knocks on the door.

"I'll get it." You pop out of your seat and walk over to the door.

You pop over to the door and answer it. As soon as you crack the door open you are greeted by an adorable puppy-dog smile and head of curly hair.

"YN. Good to see you again, love. Did you miss me?" Will Ospreay, the man of the hour, greets you with a cheeky smile at the door. "It's been a long time, hasn't it?"

"Will!" You gush and step forward into Ospreay's waiting arms.

Will chuckles as you fall forward into his arms and hug him tightly. He wraps his arms around you and hugs you back just as tight. "I'm so glad that you finally decided to make the move over to AEW!" You step back out of Will's arms after a minute. "And yes, I guess you can say that I missed you." You giggle.

You step back into the locker room and let Will inside as well. Ospreay takes a minute to chat with Konosuke before their match, and he greets Hobbs whose back from showering as well.

Don comes back from whatever supposed meeting he was at and immediately heads over to Will. The pair chat for a few minutes before Callis has to head down to commentary to prepare for the Konosuke vs Ospreay match.

"Do you need anything before your match, Will?" You ask Ospreay after Don heads out again.

"Me? No, I'm alright, love." Will shakes his head, curls bouncing in his face. "So what? Are you like the mum of the group?" He teases you with a laugh.

You giggle and shake your head. "I help out wherever I can." You shrug.

Hobbs chortles from the other side of the room. "She's definitely the mom of the group." He insists.

"I never hear you complaining when I'm ironing your laundry or making sure you've got all your gear before matches." You reply playfully. "I'll let you get dressed, Will." You walk over to the door.

Hobbs starts laughing again as you step out into the hallway. Once you've shut the door Don pops up at the end of the hall and beckons you over to him.

"Don? I thought you were headed down to the commentary table?" You stride down the hall to meet Callis.

"I've got a few minutes." Don replies matter-of-factly. "I wanted to ask you something before Ospreay's match with Konosuke." He informs you.

Your eyebrows raise slightly in surprise and you nod. "Okay. Ask away I guess."

"You and Will. There's some history there, right?" Callis asks you.

"Yeah, sort of." You confirm. "Ospreay and I hung out sometimes back in Japan." You shrug. "We've always been friends. Why?"

Don nods, clearing thinking about something under his shadowed glasses. "Right. Just friends?" He quirks a brow at you.

"I-well-I-Yeah." You stutter. "I'm sorry, why is this relevant?" You narrow your eyes at Callis.

"Right, and does Will know that?" Don keeps up with his questions.

Flabbergasted by Don's interrogation you are at a loss for words. But Don seems uninterested in your surprise and lack of an immediate answer. "Does Will know what, exactly?" You ask him.

"That the two of you are just friends?" Don answers. "Because it seems to me like the kid is grossly smitten with you." He informs you. "Talked about seeing you the whole flight over here."

"He did?" You choke.

Don nods, peering over the rim of his glasses at you. "Mhm. And the blush on your cheeks is telling me that you might share his feelings. Am I wrong?" He asks you plainly.

"Personally, I don't think that's any of your business, Don." You reply in a scoff.

Don remains stoic, as he usually is. He stares at you with a crooked smile and a raised eyebrow.

"I'm not confronting you about anything here, YN." He assures you. "It was just a question. And between us, YN. Well, I think you and Ospreay would make quite the power couple." He smiles at you.

"Right." You nod. "Well I've got stuff to do, so..." You bounce on your heels. "I'll see you after Will and Konosuke's match."

Don nods and turns around to has back down to the commentary table. You hang around in the hall and wait for Will to finish up changing.

Ospreay finishes getting changed and heads out into the hall with Konosuke.

"Alright! You both look good!" You compliment the pair. "You two all ready to head out and get this done?" You ask them both.

Konosuke nods and walks off since his entrance is first. You walk with Will down to the tunnel and chat with him.

"Good luck out there, Will." You offer Ospreay some kind words.

"I don't suppose you'd come out with me, would you, love?" Will turns and looks down at you. "It always pays to have a pretty lady out with you.' He teases you with a cheeky grin.

You giggle and shake your head. "I think that you'll be okay." You insist.

"A kiss for good luck then?" Will presses on. "Just on the cheek?"

"Fine." You roll your eyes playfully and lean forward. You plant a chaste kiss on Will's cheek. "Good luck. You'll need it against Konosuke." You tease him.

Ospreay laughs and heads through the tunnel. You watch him disappear and shake your head. Maybe Don is onto something after all.

But enough about sick boy club this is about MOMOMAEDA!! Which I just love to say because I’m an alliteration simp. I looked up their interactions in DRS and TDP and YEAH it’s very interesting how differently Kaito treats Nagito initially. Like he can sense something’s off about him, but even still, he’s willing to give Nagito a shot because hey he seems nice enough and is honest so whatevs lol. Which is what I love about Kaito—because even if Nagito’s interest in space might not be entirely sincere, even if he might just be interested in Kaito because he’s an Ultimate—Kaito still appreciates Nagito’s praise (compared to others who find it uncomfortable) and sees him as a guy who has potential to become better with the help of friendship. And that’s exactly what goes down in DRS.

The fact that they included the ending tidbit to say that Nagito rejected the offer to be a sidekick but Kaito kept insisting anyways is so wonderful too! Nagito’s deep self-loathing vs Kaito’s gung-ho attitude. Immovable object meets unstoppable force lol. And like, pretty sure Kaito will win in the end simply because Kaito will not rest until his has his sidekick and it IS still a request from an ULTIMATE so really isn’t it rude of Nagito to keep turning him down? May as well play along until Kaito gets tired of him—is what I figure would be how Nagito rationalizes it all.

But yeah honestly these two are like the hype men of their class. You’re right about how similar they are with the way they compliment others and we even get to see them tag team it in DRS too. I wonder how their interaction would go if (when) Nagito becomes his sidekick. You know Kaito is going to shut down that self-depreciation talk real fast and counter it with something to boost Nagito up all while Nagi looks at him like “????”. Poor Nagito has never been in this sort of situation before ahaha. And Kaito��s stubborn too—I really can’t imagine he’ll back down from trying to help Nagito even if Nagito does something bad. Kaito would probably say something like: “He’s my sidekick. I take full responsibility for his actions and I won’t let him do this again—mark my words.” He is the hero after all. God Kaito really WOULD be such a great partner for Nagi. I’m not sure what Nagi is bringing to the table besides his anxiety of having an Ultimate with little regard for his own safety from Nagito’s luck, but hey Kaito really likes it when Nagito praises him so at least we know there won’t be a shortage there lol.

D&D and I love you's

The love language between Mike and Will is D&D. The love language between Mike and El is just... "I love you."

I made this post last week about the importance of the words "I love you" for El and Mike vs the importance of actions for Will and Mike, and it got me thinking about the ways that Mike uses these love languages, the expectations El and Will have of Mike, what they ask him for, and how he delivers.

This comment by @a-place-on-cordelia-street especially inspired me, thank you!!!

Following the D&D plot vs the "I love you" plot, I found some interesting parallels or story beats between both of these relationships.

Will and Mike had a solid history of playing D&D throughout their relationship and Mike hypes Will up as he wins the campaign after he's rescued from the Upside Down.

Mike freely says that he loves El and doesn't want to lose her again, whether platonically or romantically. It's not pressured, he is just feeling a lot of stress about losing the people closest to him.

Later in their relationship, Will repeatedly asks to play D&D, asks Mike to revisit their strong friendship, and Mike continually shuts him down.

Mike feels pressure, mostly from himself, to say "I love you" to El again. He feels like he should say it to El's face but he can't, and El, while not pressuring him, did look anticipatory and disappointed when he doesn't say it.

Will springs a game of D&D onto Mike after Mike didn't initiate a game himself. Mike goes along with it after complaining, and makes Will feel worse by making fun of it. He gives Will what he wants on the surface level, but his heart isn't in it and that makes it even worse.

El springs an "I love you" onto Mike after he doesn't ever say those words to her. Mike pretends not to know what she's talking about, doesn't really participate in the kiss she gives him, and looks confused afterward. He goes along with what El is saying and what she wants here, not cutting in to say "I take it back actually" or "I don't feel this way romantically." This eventually makes it worse.

They both tried getting what they wanted from Mike and he refused to make it easy for either of them.

The D&D game is more paralleled to Mike's "I love you" in s4 but I'll touch on that later.

This leads to a fight in both relationships. Will calls Mike out for not being in the mood to play anymore. This rings true, as we know Mike used to love playing. Mike acts like the idea of them playing for the rest of their lives is immature, but Will says that's what he wants. The conversation ends with Will affirming that he wants to play D&D, he wants that love from Mike back.

El calls out Mike for not loving her anymore. This does not ring true, as we know he never even said it to her face and looked very conflicted when this came up last time. Mike pretends like her accusations are baseless and changes the topic. The conversation ends with El saying that she's not what he thinks she is anymore, she's not a superhero. An idea very woven into their "I love you's" in s4.

The next big talk Mike and Will have after their fight, Mike gives Will what he wants, genuinely this time. He makes that effort to say "yeah, I do still want to play, and I don't want you to move on from me." This is unprompted from Will, and comes from Mike reflecting on their fight. It ends on a high note, both boys smiling.

The next big talk Mike and El have after their fight, Mike doesn't give El what she wants. He tries to (I think? I know some people think they were coming up on a mutual break up here, but this could've been Mike trying to say I love you, and I'll go with that interpretation for this analysis) in a very similar way to how he tried to say it at the store in the "blank makes you crazy" scene in s3, but he fumbles over his words, looking incredibly nervous and negative. El can tell.

We haven't completed these stories yet so I think this arc is unfinished. But analyzing what we do have, while Mike and Will have ups and downs in s4, staying on the topic of D&D, we see Mike continue on the path to make Will happy. He gets back to playing D&D with Dustin and at school, and it's easy to see that he's in the right place to play D&D with Will again when they have the time. Will states his desire to play D&D with Mike for the rest of their lives again and Mike doesn't shoot Will down. He calls Will's D&D painting amazing. He is continuing to repair the love language that had previously been broken in s3. He is doing the work to repair that, show that to Will, and get to a place where he can accept that this, playing D&D with Will for the rest of his life, is what will make him happy.

With El, Mike also gives what was asked for. He doesn't want to, though. He has to be pushed into it by Will, his mouth scrunches up before he says it, just like it does every time he regrets doing something bad to Will (see this post), he's not happy to say it, he doesn't look relieved to finally say the words and get them off his chest. He doesn't look in love. I think the previous scene when they're talking before being interrupted by the pineapple pizza shows this: Mike didn't want to say this, or else he would've already been making steps to make his previous error in not saying it right. It wasn't an error though, Mike doesn't want to say it, and Mike finally giving in and giving El what she wants doesn't fix it.

Which is how this scene parallels back to the D&D game back in s3, rather than Mike coming to terms with loving D&D and Will in s4. This "I love you" was purely pressured out of him, not just by El but also Will. He played the game, he said the words (he basically said the whole speech about how he'd sacrifice himself for the Kalamar all over again, sarcastically high fiving Will who'd egged him on, just like Lucas had in the D&D game), and then in the epilogue, Mike is realizing that El still isn't happy, just how he realized that Will wasn't happy during that game in s3.

Mars in Leo vs...

This series focuses on conflict and the Mars Signs “against” each other. Because of this the series will explore some more negative topics and themes. Mars also covers a lot more than conflict such as attraction, energy levels, will, ambition, physical intimacy, competition, etc.

Leo vs. Leo

Well, I wouldn’t want to be caught between two Mars in Leo fighting. They can be loud, vocal, and animated. They can also be condescending, overbearing, or surprisingly negative. Leo as a sign is typically generous, warm, affectionate, cheery, but also demanding, prideful, and dramatic. This can all be expressed with ease when Mars is in the sign. They could hype each other up, love each other, admire and respect each other but they could also be highly competitive, threatened by each other, and refuse to give in to the other. These two connect strongly via passion and this brings out a lot of ups and down. Their relationship whether close and loving or disgruntled and unfavorable will be lively. I wouldn't get my hopes up too much about any quick announcements re: City on Fire. Don Winslow has a new book to sell, so he's building up hype for it, but I imagine him blabbing his mouth on Twitter about the film will be shut down very soon (like, that Matt Damon namedrop seemed completely unsanctioned at worst and wishful thinking at best – not in a million years would something like that would be announced via a random tweet). They don't even have a script, there's no director – there's a loooong way to go before any more proper announcements. I won't be mad if I'm proven wrong, though.

And on a similar note, I saw some people bummed about no Bikeriders at Cannes – that one I understand, but if it's not ready, it's not ready (at least according to Thierry Frémaux). Just because there were test screenings happening and those who were there thought it looked ~90% done, doesn't mean that it's actually ready to be screened publicly, we don't know what the inner workings there are and what Jeff Nichols wants – and if he needs more time, give it to him, he knows what he's doing, his previous films have been insanely good. (A better question is – where's Poor Things in that lineup, since that was shot almost two years ago and Yorgos Lanthimos has almost finished another film by now, but I digress.)

And Dune, which some seemed to expect too, was never ever going to happen at Cannes – Venice was the best bet, but they already announced that it's not going there either. CinemaCon is happening very soon, though, so maybe some new pics or even a trailer might come out of that (or – since it's very much a trade, not fan event – at least a description of a trailer if they show one there).

Fall 2023 Plan to Watch

Happy Fall Ya'll

As today is the first day of fall, and the last season of anime for 2023 is fast approaching, I figured there was no better time to list out what we'll be watching for the Fall 2023 Season.

This is in by no means order of rank, just how they got colleged together. All in all, we'll be starting the season with 25 shows and 4 (at the time of posting) that we'll be keeping an eye on for an official release as they still haven't been picked up.

Spy x Family Season 2 《Action ▪︎ Childcare ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} If you haven't seen Spy Family (btw I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Spy vs Family, but whatever) then that's on you I guess. Like you still have time to go watch season one, and you should because it's about to get good! I'm just excited for some good comedy mixed with just the right amount of James Bond style action.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 《Adventure ▪︎ Drama ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Magic》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Sept 29th} I first heard about Frieren from one of Gigguk's videos when he was talking about the manga. I love me some true fantasy anime, and I have a feeling that if the anime is as good as the manga is, that I'll be writing probably several think pieces about it.

The Kingdoms of Ruin 《Action ▪︎ Adventure ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Gore ▪︎ Sci-fi》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 6th} The premise of Machine vs Magic/revenge plot seems really interesting, and I'm intrigued by the Gore tag.

The Vexations of a Shut-in Vampire Princess 《Fantasy ▪︎ Vampire ▪︎ Comedy》 {HiDive ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} This looks like silly nonsense, and we love the "Vampire that doesn't drink blood" troop.

I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness《Fantasy ▪︎ Romance ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 4th} This title is a mouthful, but I'll forgive it as long as there is a good amount of sassy comedy.

The Apothecary Diaries 《Drama ▪︎ Historical ▪︎ Medical ▪︎ Mystery》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 21st} I know a lot of people are super excited for this show. We really enjoyed Raven of the Inner Palace and are excited to see more shows just like it. The animation and artwork in the promo video look gorgeous, so we'll see if it lives up to the hype.

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Part 2 《Fantasy ▪︎ Magic ▪︎ Mythology ▪︎ Slice of Life》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 5th} I'm so ready for this part 2! We fell in love with series back when season one first started airing. The art, the world building, the characters and their growth, and the mix of mythology is just so perfect! So excited to get to be back in this world and experience the journey it takes us on!

Ragna Crimson 《Action ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Isekai 》 {HiDive ~ First Episode Aires Sept 30th} Dragons. That is all.

Undead Unluck 《Action ▪︎ Supernatural ▪︎ Comedy》 {Hulu ~ First Episode Aires Oct 6th} Look, all I know is that the last couple of anime that Disney has acquired have been bangers so I'm not going to miss out on this either.

I'm in Love with the Villainess 《Fantasy ▪︎ Girls' Love ▪︎ School ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} This is one of two Yuri that we are getting this season. This one looks to be silly and goofy, and I'm always down for some silly girls love fun!

Butareba - The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig - 《Fantasy ▪︎ Isekai ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} This.........I mean why not. As long as it doesn't take an Inukai-san's Dog turn then I'm sure it'll be entertaining. I'm hoping for my sanity that it's just wholesome fun.

I Shall Survive Using Potions! 《Fantasy ▪︎ Isekai ▪︎ Reincarnation 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} You know, every seasons got have at least 3 dumb, turn your brain off, lazy writing but oddly fun Isekais. This will probably be mine for the season.

FLCL: Grunge 《Action ▪︎ Avant-garde ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Mecha ▪︎ Sci-fi》 {Max (HBO) or Adult Swim ~ Currently Airing (Sept 8th)} Oops, I guess I'm already behind. Oh well! I'm also adding Shoelace to this as well because it aires in a couple of days (Sept 30th), but other than an article saying that it'll be on Toonami there's no official release posting for it. Anyways, I'm excited to see it, as that grunge punk artsy look is something I don't see often, but I enjoy it when I do. I heard the last two spin-offs didn't do great so I'm hoping these don't fall flat.

Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange 《Action ▪︎ Adult Cast ▪︎ Drama》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Sept 30th} I'm going to give this 3 episodes. I'm hoping for some intense drama, but have a feeling that this will feel like one of those "cop propaganda" shows that are prolific here in the US.

Shy 《Action ▪︎ Drama ▪︎ Super Power》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} Who doesn't love a shy Super Hero trying to overcome their shyness to save to help maintain the safety of the world! I'm gonna give it at least 3 episodes because this could either be really good or really bad.

KamiErabi GOD.app 《Action ▪︎ High-Stakes Game》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 4th} I was really worried at first that this was going to be some kind of spin-off of King's Game. None that the synopsis is out, we're worried it'll be some kind of mash-up between King's Game and Platinum End. I want to be wrong. Please, let me be wrong.

16bit Sensation: Another Layer 《Adult Cast ▪︎ Otaku Culture ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Workplace》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 4th} Hehe haha, twist of fate, now you work on this hentai game in order to help us save the studio and also your job. I'm just enough of a degenerate that I'll probably enjoy this.

Migi & Dali 《Mystery ▪︎ Comedy》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} Mystery Comedy? Spooky twin boys that pretend to be one boy. Huh.

Protocol: Rain 《Drama ▪︎ Video Games》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} Take the "High School Idol group that's trying to save their school" troop, but make it e-sports, net boys, and the net cafe that "saved" them. Hoping it'll be interesting.

My New Boss is Goofy 《Adult Cast ▪︎ Slice of Life ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Workplace》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} I don't know why, but a part of me was hoping that this man's boss was actually Goofy, but it's not Disney Jailed so there was, not gonna lie, a bit of disappointment when I realized that wasn't the case. I'll still watch it. Just means that I'll have a few less "Hyuck" jokes when I do my review.

A Girl & Her Guard Dog 《Romance ▪︎ School》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Sept 28th} We are...apprehensive about this one, but will give it at least 3 episodes, but if it gives us the creeps due the Age-Gap Romance troop then will probably drop it.

Stardust Telepath 《Girls' Love ▪︎ School ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Supernatural 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 9th} This is the other comedy Yuri this season, but this one has an alien girl instead!

Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductuons 《Detective ▪︎ Mystery 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 2nd} Wow are we a sucker for these kinds of shows. However, we've seen these swing from really good to truly awful. Hopin' I don't have to drop this one.

The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch 《Fantasy ▪︎ Slice of Life ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Supernatural 》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 1st} A funny, lighthearted story about a Witch and her silly little human she raises. This will probably be what I watch to wind down in the evening.

Tearmoon Empire 《Drama ▪︎ Fantasy ▪︎ Comedy ▪︎ Romance ▪︎ Time Travel》 {Crunchyroll ~ First Episode Aires Oct 7th} Ah, the old is Time Travel just Isekai debate. We, for one, do not think that it is as it's still that same world even if time has changed. That aside, there isn't enough of these one world time travel shows these days, so it'll be interesting to see how this one shakes out.

The Four Brothers of Yuzuki - Where are there parents? Who is the main brother this story is about? Will there be overwhelming merchandise of these brothers who look the same but are different ages as well? These are the important questions that may never get answered.

Paradox Live - I don't know why, but for some reason, I'm getting DMMD vibes off these guys. I love DMMD. Why is this not available here in the US?

Triplemania XXXI Tijuana preview

El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Kenny Omega - This is for Vikingo's AAA mega championship. Omega was the previous champion for over two years, and he was scheduled to defend against Vikingo in December 2021, but Omega was sidelined with injuries and Vikingo instead won the vacant title in a five-way match. Omega and Vikingo finally squared off in AEW on a March 2023 show; Omega won, but the title wasn't at stake. So now they're meeting again, and the gold is finally on the line.

It's taken so long for AAA to get this match that in the meantime Omega has had a falling out with his mentor Don Callis. Callis is now weaseling his way into every other feud Omega has going on these days, and a few days ago it was revealed that he's cornering Vikingo and giving him tips on how to beat Omega. This is probably meant to set up interference, and possibly a fuck finish so Vikingo can retain without Omega losing clean. That would be a disappointment, since the whole point of doing Omega vs. Vikingo is to focus on straight up flippy wrestling goodness, without all the bullshit.

My bet is that Vikingo will win and keep the title, and hopefully not permanently align with Callis. But I can't rule out the possibility that AAA will put the belt back on Omega for another two years. I also can't rule out that Vikingo could join the Don Callis Family--sooner or later somebody has to, and it might as well be him.

LA Park & Rush vs. Psycho Clown & Sam Adonis - This is the final match in the Guerra de Rivalidades tournament. Each team in the field consisted of wrestlers who hate each other, and in each round the losing team advances. So whichever team loses this match will qualify for the grand "prize," which is to face each other in a mask vs. hair match on August 12.

The big draw for this tournament is the possibility that we could get a huge Park vs. Rush match where either Park loses his mask or Rush shaves his impressive mane. It's something of a holy grail for Mexican matchmakers, because neither of these guys likes doing jobs and you have to pay damn good money for a big star to lose his mask or hair. Rush has already teased walking out on this match, which goes to show how tricky it'll be to pull this off.

Of course, the simplest thing to do here is have Rush and Park win so that you set up Psycho vs. Adonis. There's no way Psycho is losing his mask anytime soon, but nobody gives a fuck about Sam Adonis or his hair, so that match books itself. The interesting wrinkle, though, is that Park has hyped up this match by saying he'll try to lose on purpose to make Park vs. Rush happen. So it'll be challenging to book a Park-Rush victory that makes any sense, but knowing AAA they'll half-ass their way to it and call it good.

Penta El Zero Miedo vs. QT Marshall - This is billed as an ambulance match, which means the goal is to force your opponent into the back of an ambulance and shut the door. The mystique of an ambulance match is that the loser is in the ambulance because he requires medical attention after taking an unusually violent match. But in reality most ambulance matches come down to "I do a cheap shot that stuns you for only 15 seconds, which is long enough to shut the door."

They spent weeks setting up a mystery man taunting Penta and then revealed it to be Marshall, which suggests they wanted to bring in an AEW guy and that was the best they could do. QT's only claim to fame in AEW is heading up two different shitty heel factions, and literally any other member of either of those factions would be more impressive against Penta. This should be a cake walk for Penta except QT would naturally have tons of goons running in for him. I still think he'll win.

Negro Casas & Argenis & Chessman & Daga vs Nicho el Millionario & Damian 666 Rey Horus & Xtreme Tiger - This is billed as a Mexico City vs. TIjuana match, with Negro's team representing CDMX and Nicho's team representing Tijuana. According to TheCubsFan, where I get all my lucha information, this is all part of an ongoing singles feud between Nicho (52 years old) and Negro (63!). I can always count on Mexico to make me feel less bad about the US running grampa fights. The show is literally named after Tijuana so I'm thinking Team Tijuana wins.

Pagano & Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf vs Vampiro & Aramis & Jack Evans - I could've sworn Vampiro was forced into retirement ages ago, but here he is. As far as I remember, this will be the first time I've seen him wrestle since WCW, but for all I know he was in a Copa Triplemania match a couple of years back that I clean forgot about. Anyway, I guess the story is Pagano was attacked months ago and recently returned accusing Vampiro of being responsible. Vamp doesn't like Pagano hanging around with Bestia and Mecha, the NWA world tag team champions. AEW fans may remember Jack Evans from working on Dark a few years ago. Aramis had a few matches in MLW but that's all I've got on him. I'm thinking Vamp's team wins.

Lady Shani & Sexy Star & Dalys vs Kamille & Natalia Markova & Viva Van - This seems to just be a random women's trios match. It's being billed as "Mexico vs. the best of the world." Kamille is the NWA women's world champion, but I wouldn't count on this match setting up a new challenger or anything. I guess her team will win.

Copa Triplemania - This is a gauntlet battle royale, so two participants start and each additional participant enters at timed intervals. Eliminations can occur at any time in the match, via pinfall, submission, or exiting the ring over the top rope to the floor. The last participant left in the match wins the Triplemania Cup. It's basically a clusterfuck to get all the undercard guys on the show.

Announced so far for the match are: Willie Mack, Mr. Iguana, Jack Cartwheel, La Hiedra, Flammer, Myzteziz, Puma King, Nino Hamburguesa, Dinamico, Gringo Loco, Laredo Kid, and Taurus. I expect surprise entrants, and I have no idea if there's any fixed limit to how many people can join the match. It feels like every time I watch one of these the finish comes down to the heel ref trying to pull shenanigans until a babyface ref saves they day. I don't think it matters who wins, but Mr. Iguana is my guy.
