like because the thing is da2 is kinda like a greek tragedy right. the ending was set before the story even begun. There was nothing no one could have done. You can replay it a million times, you can make different choices, but it'll end the same way. you can rewatch it a million times but Antigone will always be dead by the time they open her tomb. You can retell it a million times but Orpheus will always turn to look at Eurydice. These characters wer doomed from the start - HELL, the first choice you make in game ALREADY sets this 'doom' narrative (by choosing to be a mage/warrior/rogue, hawke immediatly dooms one of their siblings).
like. da2 is a game more about the journey then it is about the ending, because the ending was set in stone from the get go.

Ivan and Genya as siblings hc
The story starts when Ivan is abt ten and Genya is a baby. They lived in a village on the Ravka/Fjerda boarder in an ordinary family. Their dad and older brothers were killed defending their home in one of the skirmishes. This makes Ivan want to join the army and kill the Fjerdans who killed his family.
Ivan tries to join in on a battle in the woods one day. It’s absolute chaos and he ends up on the wrong end of a druskelle’s gun. He throws his hands out in an attempt to protect himself and the man unnaturally freezes. Ivan is able to scamper away and hide under a log but that’s how he finds out he’s a heartrender.
The news spreads through the village and people start to turn on them. Those nasty grisha are part of the reason that they keep being attacked. If they can get rid of the grisha, maybe they can live somewhat peacefully. Their mom tells Ivan to take Genya and run while she buys them time.
Ivan runs through the snowy woods until he can’t anymore. Then he walks. And walks. And walks. The night is freezing and he tucks Genya on the inside of his coat but she still cries. He knows he needs to keep moving but he doesn’t know where he’s trying to get to and it’s dark and he’s lost and he’s freezing. He slumps against a tree and curls up. He knows the stories of people freezing to death in their sleep so he keeps himself awake by trying to keep Genya’s blood moving.
In the morning, there’s a man on a horse. A grand imposing gentleman on a horse. The Black General was leading his troops through the area in response to Fjerdan attacks and grisha hunts. One of his scouts found Ivan huddled in the snow. Ivan’s heard whispers about the Black General but he’s too frozen to fight back when he’s swept up onto a horse and taken back to the Little Palace. They don’t find Genya until a healer finally convinced Ivan to take his coat off so he could get in a warm bath. It’s thanks to Ivan’s heartrending that not only did they survive but they also had minimal frostbite.
After a few days, the Black General calls Ivan to his office. He asks him about why he was in the woods in the first place. Commemorates him on his skill. Is surprised that he’s never had any formal training. Assured him that he’s safe now inside the Palace walls; no commoners could hurt him now. Ivan comes away completely enamored. This man saved his life, gave him a new safe home, and was actively fighting to make the world better for people like him. Ivan would follow this man to the ends of the earth.
Ivan starts training and quickly excels despite him also mourning his past life and trying to parent Genya (potty training, etc). Genya gets tested and is discovered as a heartrender as well. Ivan is fifteen when he starts working for the General. Trivial things like delivering messages and booking meetings but he still takes immense pride in his work. The General says that he’s going to have Genya go work for the king. Ivan’s hesitant but the General insists the two of them are meant for great things. And what’s greater than him working for the greatest grisha and her working for the greatest man? Ivan let’s her go.
Time goes on. Genya knows Ivan’s her brother but she doesn’t remember him caring for her. She starts out being indifferent to him; he’s just another face in the crowd. Then she starts to resent him for sending her to the king. If he hasn’t changed his mind, her life would be so much different. She wouldn’t be alone and hungry and hurt and scared.
By the time Alina’s story starts, Genya has managed to compress her feelings into professional contempt. She likes Fedyor well enough but can’t stand to be with Ivan for more than what is necessary to complete their respective jobs.
What happens next is dependent on if you want to follow the story of the book or the show. They have to work together and start to slowly fix their relationship. But both versions of the story end tragically. Ivan dies and Genya lives.
Also Genya is constantly cold and has terrible circulation bc of their night in the forest. Ivan would use his powers to warm her up.

There's something about how the Hofmann and the Vingler siblings parallel each other to a degree and its making me lose some marbles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're so dumb, both Kakania and Enigma take after their older siblings from hairstyle and even clothing style. But there's so much more tragic to these four. These siblings really parallel a lot and it hurts.
Adler and Klara are both younger idealists and they largely advocated for progression through their beliefs in arcanum and science. But the significant change and loss of the world around them caused a collapse in those ideals, sending them into a greatly debilitating spiral.
Adler used to be someone who was greatly passionate about his job and his understanding of the world through cryptography and science. But his entire belief collapsed after the "Storm," and coped with it horribly with drinking and long, insane tangents. His spiral had led him to nearly committing suicide, and in his survival, he isolated himself for a long time.
Klara meanwhile has always been rebellious and idealistic, challenging the social environment in Vienna with her progressive ideas and striving to make changes. But this ultimately becomes her downfall once witnessing how her ideas can lead to severe consequences if led without critical thinking. She lost not only her family and her closest friend, she also lost her entire community; the people she had been fighting for.
While Adler had slowly come back to resolve them after 8 years, Klara is still reeling from the effects of the major loss she had to take in within a short period of time in comparison.
Greta and Elbert both being people who are down-to-earth and are essentially ready to accept the world as it is; but they both also strive for progression and change that they see the light in the most dire situations presented to them.
While they reacted much less significantly to the major change around them (i.e. the "Storm"), they still absolutely changed to a point where they took risks that tragically costed them their lives.
Greta had traveled across the eras for 8 years and it had allowed her to acknowledge that the world built by human society she had known is entirely lost. Yet, she still risked her life so that she could not only protect someone she immensely cared about, but so that she could at the very least pave the path for a potentially small solution to protecting everyone else from the "Storm."
Elbert, while having been molded by the environment around him, still strived for change. He had a greater yet still limited understanding of the society around him, and he made the choices of playing safe until taking the one risk that permanently disabled him. Even then, he still made the efforts to protect Klara and supported her from the sidelines 'til the end. And yet he still succumbed to it all and lost himself, having died after being unfortunately influenced by the Storm Syndrome.
With all this mix of despair and hope, the younger children are given the lifelong task to carry their older siblings' mind and heart as they move forward in the future without them.

my brain is itching to write like a 3000 word essay on na baekjin but i don't know what to say like where do i even begin with this kid. golden child, promising young man, treated like trash from childhood so learns how to attack instead of defending himself. like, nothing he does is normal, everything is too much, everything is taken too far with him. he has to be excellent at everything, nothing is ever good enough, it can always be taken one step farther, improved, perfected. he doesn't know where to draw the line, or what the line even looks like. it's that one math problem he keeps getting wrong and even when sieun tells him the right answer he's frustrated because it was never about the answer, it was about him not figuring it out himself. he got it wrong. how could he get it wrong? how could anyone else but him figure it out? it doesn't matter that he meticulously crafted the entire puzzle, it's that someone else put in the last missing piece. and he can't take it! how dare anyone surpass him! after everything he's done! after getting so far! his calculated gaze holds so much aggression and pain and greed and he uses his calm demeanor to mask all of that burning rage. and it's so tough, to constantly hide the fact that you're screaming inside but he does it flawlessly. yet. ultimately violence wins. that missing puzzle piece costs him his life. he was always meant to make the wrong choices. he was always meant to lose. he was born a puppet hanging on strings. so he cut them loose. but the solid ground underneath was a mirage and he fell into a bottomless pit. an endless abyss that consumed him whole.

Keen, Fadel and Bison - Doomed Siblings
Fadel saying him and Bison never cared about Keen makes me think of how the two were probably resentful of Keen getting to stay behind the scenes. It's such a horrible situation and it was bound to tear apart these three brothers. On one side, you have Keen who hates that his mother considers him less talented than his brothers, but on the other side, you have Fadel and Bison who hate being turned into murderers while one brother gets to enjoy the 'cushy' job. The dictomy of it all. Fadel and Bison would have happily taken Keen's place and Keen their's.
Lilly would have taken advantage of the brewing resentment and distance between the three brothers because that's exactly how parents control you - by manufacturing divide among siblings, starving some of them of all affection and giving crumbs of affection to the other ones while also destroying their life. But while Fadel and Bison formed their own unit and brought some love and warmth to each other, Keen was left isolated from all sides because Lilly always kept moving the goalpost of her love. Keen would never be good enough so he keeps starving and running after the carrot he will never get, but Fadel and Bison tasted that carrot and want nothing to do with it.
