A design of Sir Lionel of Arthurian Legend, or, as in the comic I’m preparing to launch in the next year, Sir Lionelle, the only lady knight of the Round Table. There’s a lot more to her design I’ll share later. What do you think?

Lionel is one of my favorite Arthurian characters, and I cannot wait to share my version of him. I have big plans! Are there any other fans of Sir Lionel out there?

The Whumps of March 2024: "Fairies"

A series of vignettes based on Arthurian legend, collected on AO3 here.

It was not enough that Queen Elaine of Benoic had lost her husband and her kingdom in one night. Somehow, she didn't even know how, her baby had disappeared as well.

She had put him down to try and revive her husband. She had failed, and when she came back...she had only gone a few feet away. She couldn't have lost him, and she couldn't have failed to hear someone come up and take him—even a fox couldn't have been so stealthy. But as much as she looked, tearing through the foliage and screaming in panic, she found not a single thread of his blanket, nothing but an indentation in the grass where she had left him.

She wept all night, and many more besides.

A year later, as she was living in a covenant with her sister Evaine—also widowed and bereft of her own sons—they saw it.

A vision. Not a dream, no, they were awake, and this was real, as real as magic or love or despair. They saw their boys—not babies but boys now, approaching manhood, laughing and playing with sticks as toy swords. She recognized the shape of Ban's face and her own nose, the features blending beautifully in their handsome child.

She reached out to touch him, but the whole image disappeared.

For a long moment, neither spoke. Evaine was the first to start crying.

"The fairies have taken them," she whispered, her face pale, a stream of tears running down her cheek.

Elaine didn't answer, just stood there, frozen with her hand out to touch her illusionary son.

Who could understand what fairies did? Why had they taken these children? And why send this vision, all these months later? 

Perhaps it was meant to be reassuring. To tell the sisters that their sons were alright, living happy and strong in some fairy paradise. 

Maybe. But to Elaine, it felt more like the fairies were just twisting the knife.

Then he called Sir Bors, Sir Ector de Maris, and Sir Lionel, and told them how the queen had forfended him the court, and so he was in will to depart into his own country.

did Sir Bors and Sir Lionel forget that they tried to kill each other? was their reunion awkward? do they look at each other in the eye?

Writing the build-up of this story just so that I can dissect the juicy family relations that everyone has. Medieval writers and poets did not skimp on the dramatic details. Like the betrayed brother arc of Lionel and Bors? Juicy. The blood feud of the Pella Fellas and Orkney Bros? Scrumptious. Tristan having a torrid affair with Isolde? Delicious. The insane things that all of Ygraine's kids do constantly? Wonderful. I am well-fed with source material to use and reference.

Honorable mention to the delightful relationship that is Sir Kay and Arthur being adopted brothers and Kay just being infinitely cooler than Arthur even though Arthur is the king.

My main design for Lionelle, my genderbent Sir Lionel from Arthurian legend and one of the stars of the webcomic I’m planning to launch in the next year. She’s both a knight of the Round Table and a princess of France. Befitting her status, she has a rather extreme personality, which I hope shows through! I think I might take a break from uploading designs for a bit, but I’ve still got a little more of hers that I can share later. Yes, I did a lot. I couldn’t help myself. What do you think?
