Yesterday i got backlash for sharing my opinions and perception of current events. I will not apologize for my outlook and perception of the world. I am open to an conversation exchange and I am open to keep growing. Where I am mentally is rooted in my experiences and my studies and if my non filter approach doesn’t sit well with you, thats on you. Not my problem. My Elders and my spirit tells me I am doing the right thing and giving breath to voices that were silenced for decades for other peoples comfort. Im not that negro. #itsanewday #sayitwithyourchest #imblack #improud #blackamerican #artist #art #movement #blacklivesmatter #blackvoicesmatter #sistersouljah (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpSpmmLgfkZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ff4ximphvz12

This is the first book I am reviewing here on BGBG: The Coldest Winter Ever, written by Sister Souljah in April of 1999To start I never read the description or even paid close attention to the title when I picked this book up at my library the only reason I checked it out was for the author. I’ve listened to sister Souljah speak before and I definitely enjoy studying and engaging in the topics she discusses. I didn’t know she had any books much less fiction so I waited a few weeks for the library to get it in and I snatched the only copy off of the shelf as soon as I saw it.  While I was sure the book would dive straight into all the facts about black culture and history and community improvement all the great things Souljah is known for, Instead, Winter (Who is the main character) tells a story which takes all kinds of twists and turns. She starts out living a glorious life smack in the middle of the Brooklyn projects surrounded by the fast money her father makes running a drug business. Souljah’s writing style is so engaging everything is like you’re right there and it’s happening to you- None of her characters are too distant rationally or emotionally to relate to and understand so while the high life seems like it’s winters entire story it’s only the pitiful beginnings. Not to spoil the story too much I’d say the best part is the ending. It’s not like a billion other stories where it ends in peaches and cream and it’s not like a million other stories that end badly just to say they did something different. When the story ends life is still going where the book is not Souljah doesn’t kill off her characters or bring them to conclusions where they are at peace with whatever it is that their lives have become,, instead she leaves a lot of room for you not only to wonder what happened next, to wish a few things hadn’t happened at all, she also leaves room for you to choose the next move for yourself. If you haven’t read this book yet I highly suggest it to anyone especially those who will find it hits quite close to home as for me after I post this I’ll be off searching for the sequel.                                             peace,
                                                                                                   -Ollyve

Hello beautiful Bibliophiles!
Just wanted to share with you a little something! I am currently in the midst of reading 'No Disrespect' by Sister Souljah. I have heard about her writing, especially 'Coldest Winter Ever' that opens up with a fierce and raw monologue.
I found this book in my roommate's room (being the nosey best friend that I am) and encountered the paperback. She said she never finished it, but it was good so far (what can I say, she's not a reader), and so I embarked on the journey of the life of an African-Amerian as she grows to become the woman she is meant to be.
This book has opened up my spiritual eyes and has shown me how real racism (whether institutionalized or cultural) affects the journey of life. It makes me understand the struggles that African-Americans face every day and the result of the sickness that has been injected into us from white people - whether the sickness is self-hate or unchangeable circumstances and generational curses... the book sheds light on the true African spirit and hopefully evokes empathy for the people who are not colored.
I recommend this book, and I have not finished it.
As-salamu alaykum, brothers and sisters of all colors.
Yours truly,
Bibliothecar-y
