I hope Mitchell and Skandar are best friends by the end of this series, if not the first book. Bobby and Flo too but Mitchell going from low-key fearing and disliking Skandar and seeing Scoundrel as an abomination to being best friends with Skandar and being like, if you want to hurt Skandar or Scoundrel, you have to g through me, would be everything.
Also can I just say, I love these characters so far. Skandar being socially awkward and not knowing how to interact. And Flo being just very nervous about this entire thing. So far they all feel very human. None of them are perfect, which I like.
Also the spirit element opens up a bigger thing here, because there's a lot of secrecy from the island which does kinda make sense but then they also expect Mainland riders to have the same knowledge as Island riders even though they purposely keep information from them. Like Skandar is lucky that he met Mitchell and Flo first because imagine you're from the mainland, you bond with a unicorn, and you think this is really cool. Then you go back to join everywhere else and are promptly killed for having a forbidden unicorn, which you didn't even know existed. It just seems weird. Also the fact that making these unicorns forbidden because of the Weaver actually just makes them become wild so gives the Weaver more unicorns to possibly control? Doesn't seem like the smartest way of doing things.
I'm honestly loving this book so far. Do we know how many there will be? There were six years mentioned so will there be six books? Or is the third the last one?
Edit: I looked it up, five books and an in-world novella.

Skandar and the unicorn thief
Ok Guys
Most of you have probably never heard of this series before.
So I’m going to tell you a little about it.
In an alternate modern world, unicorns exist on the Island. (And they are ferocious monsters) Skandar Smith has always dreamed of being a unicorn rider, but when a mysterious villain by the name of the Weaver appears to steal the unicorns of bonded riders, it's up to Skandar to save the day.
There are different elements such as fire, water, air and earth.
The characters are really fun to read about and this is really a very fun book to spend your time on.
It’s really cool! So check it out.
Me.

DREAMER AEGON AU
The night after the Driftmark brawl, Aegon starts having dragon dreams warning of the Dance. Confused by the disturbing images he keeps seeing, Aegon decides the only way to avoid the dance is to one up Rhaenyra by ruining the reputations of himself and his younger siblings. Absolute chaos ensues.
First up is Aegon and the wildly improper wife he eloped with when he was 19, Ynys Sand!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is Aegon’s partner in crime, fellow Dreamer and Schemer, but NOT his wife, Helaena Targaryen and her greenseer husband Skandar of Stane!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rounding out the terrible marriage matches, it’s baby of the family Daeron, his much smarter wife Bethany Flowers, and Daeron’s boyfriend totally platonic friend Addam of Hull!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, sweet Jacaerys, just happy to be invited (aka sent by Rhaenyra to spy on her siblings’ weird marriages) and Aemond who is desperately begging them to disinvite him from this nonsense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dreamer! Aegon AU, where the ages are made up and the plot doesn’t matter because Aegon just had another nightmare and he’s coping with alcohol and another hare brained scheme to tank someone’s reputation and piss off his grandsire.
I aged up Jace, Daeron, and Addam simply because I wanted them to get in on the shenanigans sooner!! I also made Gaemon a lil older but he’s not relevant, he’s just here to make me happy and also so Ynys can have an aggressive discussion about self control with her husband.
Aegon lets Ynys pick every one of their children’s names.
The brown and blue dragon arms on Helaena & Skandar’s cards are their cadet house, House Stane of Dreamer’s Cove, eventually built on the coastline of Skagos as a trading hub.
Skandar is second born, has a Wildling for a mother, is as loopy as Helaena, but has a deep respect for Dreamfyre that wins her brothers’ over. He loves to train with Ynys/watch Ynys beat people up.
Aegon still uses a personal coat of arms and at Ynys’ suggestion, Summerhall is built for them in the Marches.
Bethany’s mother is the precocious younger sister of a magister of Myr, who had a brief love affair with Otto’s older brother, only to figure out she was with child when she got back on the boat to Myr. Since her mother remarried, Bethany has moved to live in Oldtown, where she longs to study at the Citadel.
House Florontys - the pink sigil with the R’hollor symbol - are old Myrish nobility and dedicated followers of the Lord of Light, famous for their production of ornate crossbows and fine arrows.
Addam mostly captains the Blue Queen (named for Tessarion) and the Whitewood Rush (named for the Weirwood trees) but they are part of his mother’s small fleet. Brave Alyn is one he and Marilda both sail, while Alyn prefers Bold Marilda, and of course Marilda has Mouse, Steadfast Addam, and Mermaid’s Kiss.
Addam and Daeron have been lovers for a long time but Addam finds Daeron’s general “i gotta chuck this responsibility at anyone else” attitude frustrating.
Addam and Benjicot are the Dunk and Egg of Renly and Loras’.
Aemond wants nothing to do with this shit. He has snitched on Alicent, Otto, Aegon, Helaena, Daeron, AND Skandar because he has no loyalty and thinks they’re all acting insane. He does eventually get his milf witch gf tho.
Jace is sent by Rhaenyra to infiltrate The Youths after a series of elopements from the Targtowers and finds himself so thrown by Ynys Sand he lets her pinch his cheek and call him adorable IN FRONT OF HIS UNCLES and he does not recover his dignity from there.

Primrose from the Skandar book series is such a special character to me because she was the first ever character I'd read about that had type 1 diabetes. It is rare that this is represented in the media and to have someone as a badass unicorn rider with t1d just had such a huge impact on me.
Yes, I almost screamed and absolutely freaked out when she showed up in the third book, I was waiting for her to be mentioned.
I'm so normal guys

Bracken's Tierlist of Mortal Made Unicorn Media:
SSS tier: The Last Unicorn (cried sobbed screamed into pillow "omg shes me fr fr" swears a unicorn had a hand in writing it)
A Tier: anthology books about the history of unicorns in myths (finds it interesting to read about the cultural translations. Absolutely points to a story and goes "I know that guy")
B Tier: Narnia (appreciates unicorn cameos but gets progressively more irritated with it as the books go on)
C Tier: Skandar + other YA edgy book series feat unicorns (confused but respects the energy of the flesh eating unicorns cannot read it because he cringes at things that portray unicorns as nonsapient)
D Tier: those middle school book series that go on for 50 books i.e unicorn academy (respects the hustle. Understands how mortal understanding of unicorns could lead to this. Still does not like it and finds it demeaning)
F Tier: My Little Pony (unsure how much Seth influenced this. Hearing the main theme makes him want to chew wires)

Book Blurb: For fans of the Wilderlore and Skandar series comes a thrilling middle grade fantasy adventure steeped in Welsh myths and legends about two intrepid friends who are tricked into opening the door to an enchanted world—only to get trapped inside.
On a summer holiday in Wales, Portia and Ben find a mysterious door set in a bramble hedge in the middle of a forest. If the old stories about the wonders and dangers of the Otherworld hadn’t long been forgotten, they may have realized the door was a portal to the perilous realm and should never be opened…
Robin Goodfellow, the man with the fox shadow, needs someone to open the door in the brambles so he can finally return home, and he’s willing to use the children’s curiosity to his advantage and lures Portia under the guise of his innocent fox form.
Once the portal is open, great danger arises, and Ben and Portia struggle to stop a powerful evil threatening both the human and the fairy worlds as they find themselves stuck in the wrong realm.
Review:
A summer adventure between two friends who are tricked into opening a door into an enchanted world... and being trapped in there! What was suppose to be a fun summer holiday in Wales turns into something more as Portia and Ben stumble upon a mysterious door in the middle of the forest... and are tricked into opening and going into it. Now they have to find a way to escape before it's too late. Robin Goodfellow is a man with a fox shadow who needs someone to open up a certain door so he can return home... and if that means tricking to kids into opening it for him while he's disguised as a innocent fox, why not. Yet with the door open, danger and evil can come through and both Ben and Portia must find a way to stop the human and fairy world from evil. This was a cute fairytale/summer read and I think middle grade readers will have fun with it. It didn't grip or enchant me as much as I would have liked, but it was an easy read and I think younger readers will have fun with it as an easy read. It's got fun magic and the setting makes it a good one to add to your summer tbr for middlegrade readers.
Release Date: June 4,2024

"Silver unicorns all have "Silver" as the 1st of their 2 names. More generally unicorns have 2 names (one their nickname) and they are often - but not always - linked in some way to their allied element." - A.F. Steadman reply on Twitter, regarding her naming rules for unicorns in the Skandar Series

The Magic of Narnia: A Deep Dive into "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"
Tumblr media
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," directed by Andrew Adamson and released in 2005, is a breathtaking adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s beloved novel. This film transports audiences to the magical land of Narnia, where they are immersed in a world of wonder, adventure, and profound themes. With its stunning visuals, compelling characters, and faithful storytelling, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is a cinematic journey that enchants viewers of all ages.

Plot Overview
The story begins during World War II, with the Pevensie siblings—Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy (Georgie Henley)—being evacuated to the English countryside. There, in the mysterious mansion of Professor Kirke (Jim Broadbent), the youngest sibling, Lucy, discovers a wardrobe that leads to the magical world of Narnia.
Narnia is under the icy grip of the White Witch, Jadis (Tilda Swinton), who has plunged the land into eternal winter. As the Pevensie children explore this new world, they meet a host of fantastical creatures and learn of a prophecy that foretells their role in Narnia's liberation. Guided by the noble lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson), they embark on an epic quest to defeat the White Witch and restore peace to the realm.
Characters and Performances
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" features a talented cast who bring their characters to life with depth and authenticity. Georgie Henley's portrayal of Lucy is particularly noteworthy; her innocence and wonder perfectly capture the essence of her character and serve as the emotional heart of the film. William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, and Skandar Keynes also deliver strong performances, each embodying their respective characters' growth and development throughout the story.
Tilda Swinton's performance as the White Witch is chillingly effective. She exudes a menacing presence that dominates every scene she is in, making her a formidable antagonist. Liam Neeson's voice work as Aslan adds a layer of gravitas and warmth, making the character both majestic and approachable.

Visuals and Special Effects
One of the most remarkable aspects of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is its stunning visual effects. The film brings the magical world of Narnia to life with breathtaking landscapes, detailed creature designs, and seamless CGI. The winter scenes, in particular, create a captivating contrast between the cold, oppressive rule of the White Witch and the vibrant, life-affirming presence of Aslan.
The battle sequences are spectacularly choreographed, combining practical effects with CGI to create epic clashes that are both thrilling and emotionally resonant. The film's visual storytelling is enhanced by its use of rich, immersive cinematography that captures the wonder and peril of Narnia.
Themes and Impact
At its core, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is a tale of courage, redemption, and the triumph of good over evil. It explores themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and the power of faith, resonating with audiences on a profound level. Aslan's sacrifice and resurrection parallel Christian themes, adding layers of meaning to the narrative.
The film has had a significant impact on both popular culture and the fantasy genre. It introduced a new generation to the world of Narnia and reaffirmed the timeless appeal of C.S. Lewis’s work. Its success led to further adaptations in the series, ensuring that the magic of Narnia continues to captivate audiences around the world.

If the Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia ever does come to be, I hope they do one thing differently from the Disney/Walden Media film series:
I hope they cast children as the protagonists, not teenagers.
Peter and Susan aren't in their late teens at the start of the series. They're 13/later 14 and 12/later 13. In Prince Caspian, the title character is also 14.
Edmund isn't a teenager until The Last Battle. (Sorry, Skandar Keynes fangirls.) He's 10, 11, and 12 across the first three books. Nor are Lucy and Eustace teenagers in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – Lucy is 10 (and was 8 in the first book, 9 in the second), while Eustace and (in The Silver Chair) Jill are both 9.
I understand why the Disney/Walden films took the "age lift" route. Good child actors are hard to find, and one of the screenwriters' main goals in that adaptation was to bring more psychological depth to the characters (sometimes in questionable ways, in the cases of Peter and Susan), which they might have thought younger kids wouldn't convey as well. Besides, older leads probably helped to prevent the films from being pigeonholed as "children's movies" and brought in a wider audience.
But teens are very different from children and older teens are very different from younger teens. Those years are full of change, and aging 13-year-olds up to 16-year-olds, and 9-year-olds up to 14-year-olds creates a different sense of who those characters are.
I just hope the new adaptation is more faithful in that respect.

So I started reading Skandar and the unicorn thief. So far I've read the first four chapters and I have thoughts. So some of this may be part of some bigger plot point of the series. If that is the case please don't spoil it, but the hatchery exam or whatever seems flawed even without what's happening with Skandar. This is based on the line where Skandar is like, since he couldn't take the exam, even if a unicorn is meant to be bonded to him, it won't be able to bond and so will become a wild unicorn. This points out a bigger problem though because to me, the same could apply to people who fail the exam. People who pass the exam aren't guaranteed to bond with a unicorn, so surely, people who fail the exam could bond with the unicorn. But because they failed the exam, they'll never know, so if unicorns do become wild there's a huge chance the person it was meant to bond with failed the exam. So would it not be easier to see who bonds with a unicorn, then do an exam to see how much they know as a way to see what they have to teach them? This exam seems really strange. And the way the rider knows Skandar wouldn't have passed. It makes me wonder if they already know, before the exam who they'll be bringing to the island, and the exam is just a formality.
Also the teacher should definitely know Skandar never took the exam and so shouldn't be there. Honestly the rider's plan seems flawed, to say the least because yeah people were on the helicopter you mentioned so will surely know he wasn't on that helicopter. Also pretty sure she was from the mainland since she knew the mum. Either that or the mum was from the island and chose to leave. It also doesn't explain why they didn't take the sister, unless it was a case of it was about Skandar specifically. Either that or it was more about personality than age or intelligence. Hard to say so far.
I don't have much on Weaver so far though I do hope Aspen gets her unicorn back. Weaver is riding a wild unicorn but obviously since its wild he hasn't bonded with it, so that's interesting. I imagine he'd have to be better than most to ride a wild unicorn and the fact he took out bonded, trained unicorns and riders. Its interesting. Also I'm surprised that, if they didn't want the mainland to ask questions, there wasn't some sort of statement saying everything's fine, don't worry, we're looking for the unicorn or even lying and saying it had already been found and everything was fine. Idk I'm enjoying it so far though, curious to see where it goes
