I’ll do a separate post about Charles Eyler and aromanticism because that is always on my mind but I’m having fresh thoughts about femininity and his character around that but it’ll be kinda long so elaboration under the cut >:)

(Note: I’ll still be using he/him since those are his canonical pronouns and he also is canonically genderfluid so this isn’t really a transfemme headcanon, more he wants to present more femme/possibly some level of dysphoria)

I get the impression Charles wants to present more femme but due to a lot of circumstances he’s not able to—

For one he presents his online self femininely with the username “Charlotte” and using a pfp of her. Many people sort of “test out” gender expression online with different names or pronouns before ever coming out irl, so I think Charles reflects this experience. In addition, he projects his insecurities of not living up to his online persona onto Vincent, assuming he is disappointed coming face to face with someone who didn’t match themselves online saying

“Its you who should be disappointed in me, mr C”

“Charlotte turned out to be Charles, whoops”

“Bet you wanted to see the girl of your dreams”

When Vincent himself says “names and bodies dont matter”

But then again, irl he wouldn’t feel comfortable with completely free gender expression because of all the Mother and Scarlett stuff— “youre a good girl” isnt so gender affirming when its in the context of your mother convinced youre her aborted daughter who’s way more successful than you are and is kinda messing up your whole mental state.

Ok now this is somewhat of a stretch but evidence nonetheless—

Charlotte. All the Charlottes. Trust me on this one. So Charlotte is Charles’ OC/self insert/persona type deal. Perfect protagonist and all that fun stuff. Projection of an ideal Charles. Scarlett. Also Charles. Ideal Charles projected in a fucked up way. So. Here’s where I’m going with this. Charles=Scarlett who=Charlotte more specifically ep1/2 Charlotte who can be considered transfemme coded mostly due to the scene she and Frei look over memories in the mirror room, specifically the one titled “Femininity”

And I’ll just paraphrase it but young Charlotte was unconfident in her femininity feeling unsuited for feminine things until Aiden encourages her to embrace it anyways and feel comfortable in it—

Charles=Scarlett=Charlotte=transfemme ITS A CONNECTION OK.

If Charles writes the story of the perfect protagonist in which the protag is an idealized self and she is living the same experience of not being able go express femininity YEAH CHARLES IS GONNA GIVE HER THE HAPPY CONCLUSION HE DIDNT ok there’s some plot holes in that ep2 is not exactly derivative of Charles’ writing buy leg me have this

There wasnt a convenient spot to slip these in but also some ep3 false realm stuff leans into gender non conformity with 1. Evidence Charles will sometimes pick a femme student vessel over Vincent and 2. Q84 rejecting traditional femininity which is opposite of this whole post but Q84 is that “what I never could be” for Charles WHICH IS A WHOLE OTHER RAMBLE ON ITS OWN so it makes sense the script is flipped here

what about the undertale, underswap, underfell and fellswap gold boys with an S/O who accidentally gets way too drunk and calls their skel at like 2 am and does an over the top speech about how much they love them

Sans: ok first of all, it’s a miracle that your call even woke him up, so he’s not really all the way there. He’ll be all “love you too babe” then pass right out again. In the morning once he remembers the night before, he’ll be all “sh*t” and frantically call you back to make sure you’re home and safe.

Papyrus: he worriedly asks where you are, and once it’s been established you’re safe ant home and just stupid drunk, he’ll sleepily listen to you ramble. He’ll definitely tease you about this later

Star: he’s giggling. He records your whole rant and plays it back to you the next time he sees you. That was pure gold

Honey: he’s torn between embarrassment at your declarations of love and laughing at you because you’re so clearly drunk. He settles for being resigned to his fate and stays on the phone until he’s sure you’ve fallen asleep

Red: “where are you? Do you know what time it is????” Red has a hard enough time sleeping on his own, there’s no ways he’s sleeping now. Yea he’s annoyed. Drunk words mean nothing to him, especially not at this hour.

Edge: he’s even more annoyed then red is. Once he learns you just decided to get drunk at home, he’s gonna lecture you on the phone. Calling him at this hour made him think there was an emergency!??

Mal: he’s not happy at all. Mal isn’t a fan of drinking and will be disappointed that his SO is drunk and alone. He’s real mad at you right now

Cash: if this is one of the nights where cash is actually sleeping, then the phone won’t wake him up. If this is an insomnia night, then he’ll answer. Cash is having the time of his life messing with you. He is a little disappointed that you got drunk though. (Remember he is a recovering alcoholic/drug user so he really shouldn’t be around a SO who can’t be responsible with stuff like this)

Oak: you get put on voice mail. There’s no way his ringtone wakes him up. Oak is practically dead when he sleeps. He’s gonna be real confused and worried once he does hear your voicemail though

Willow: same reaction as papyrus but more annoyed. You really shouldn’t be drinking at this hour.

Wine: he’s quick to make sure you’re somewhere safe, but once his fears are resolved, he’ll settle for gently reprimanding you. You’re drunk right now so he’s not really putting any effort into it

Coffee: is immediately worried and will actually try to find you if you don’t tell him where you are. Once he knows you’re safe, he’s gonna mess with you and record your reactions. It’s payback for waking him up at this ungodly hour

  I may have, like immediately, continued the story from before with your additions added to it. So here we go, the next installment of 

ThunderBolt and Flash.

(Its long just so you know, and I am making a seperate google doc to record the story and your additions to it. This is proving to be a marvelous way for me to get my literary muscles working once more)

The Sweet Ones

At first, they flinch from the contact, only slightly. But as time goes by, and they keep that constant touch, slowly they seem to relax, just a bit. The constant thuds and exasperated sound of Papyrus hitting the doorway catches their attention, and seeing it for a bit leaves them a lil dazed…then he does it again, and they honest to God snort under their breath and chuckle. When the next flash comes they stiffen a lil, but as Poplar and Blue begin to ramble, talking about butterflies, to the best way to cook pasta, and even somehow getting into a rant about which pokemon are best (Bulbasaur is best boy, Gengar deserves a hug and Lugia is magnificent and totally a bird, yes they swim, ever heard of penguins?!) the human begins to relax again, and even joins in on the bandwagon.

And if every flash they press a little more into Ash and Sans, and in lull moments to gently grip their hands in gratitude, well who’s gonna say anything? And when they fall asleep next to these skele boys, and they don’t have their usual nightmares, the skeleboys are gonna have a much brighter, still subdued, but happier human friend come morning.

They still seem nervous going outside, but in the following days, their mood has definitely improved. A couple thunderstorms later, shared together, and a soft “thank you” would find its way being spoken to these sweet boys, each getting a hug of thanks and a soft earnest and genuine smile.

Team Anxiety

They notice the company through the haze of their own terror, and at first nothing changes. But slowly, the human starts getting more concerned over their fear, till instead of being comforted, they’re trying to comfort the anxiety team instead, taking bone hands from hoodie ends, and giving them things to be occupied with doing. It ends up being that distracting them helps distract themself, and they don’t really notice the thunderstorm, having slid into ‘my friends need me’ mode unconsciously. Going to make some honey sweetened hot chocolate for swap pap, deliberately starting a lil argument with Red that pulls him into talking and focusing on something else, and somehow wrangling Swapfell Pap into a blanket and keeping them nearby, and it turns into this strange comfort circle, everyone trying to comfort the other.

They are definitely more centered and put together afterwards, nightmares gone as their concern takes precedent. With some more similar instances under their belt, they’d ask if the skeleboys are afraid of thunderstorms as well? And when they are told that it’s not the case, but instead they had noticed that the human was scared of them and were trying to help….well if a smile could be fond and sad at the same time, then the human does one. And they would give some very sincere thanks to them.

I’ll fistfight Zeus for you Squad

Perhaps the strangest reaction the human would have. The comfort items and food does help, and as they are busy distracting themselves with eating, they would notice the getting up, walking around…the patrolling. And the human would need to simply breathe for a moment…cause they recognize this behaviour. They see it happen when you guys go out to new places, or when one of the skele boys was sick for a bit…they would do this patrol as their way to make sure that…you guys were safe. And that would warm the human, and just the knowledge that two incredibly skilled individuals, friends, would consider their situation deserving of patrol status would have them struggling not to cry slightly.

They would calm down after a visit to the bathroom, and when they return, it would be a gradual decrease in their terror, as in their mind they imagine bolts of lightning being defeated and blocked by these two stalwart guardians. Even in their nightmare that night, it’s protected by their Skele guardians…and if they wake up and find themselves in the kitchen, whereupon said warm awkward hug, sincere comfort is offered by these two, well..they go back to sleep in much more assured spirits. They had never had that reaction to their fear before, even moreso, without being bombarded with questions about it. And it was consistent behaviour to…and that…that was more precious than they realized, as the one time they tried riding it out by themself and not with the skel bro’s was torture.

It’s after that time they made sure to always be with the skel boys during stormy seasons. Just being around them made everything so much easier to handle. It was getting to the point that you barely even considered the thunder and lightning that would flash outside, too comfortable, too at ease, feeling too safe and cared for to even contemplate your fear. And as this happens each time a thunderstorm occurs in the skele house when you’re with them, it does have an effect on the human, one seen during their next sleepover during a thunderstorm. So, during the next thunderstorm, as everyone is relaxing in the living room, you speak up, to use their bathroom for a bit, having brought your sleeping bag with you. You’ve done it before, it’s actually customary now whenever a storm is in the area for you to be at the skele house for a sleepover. So that doesn’t raise eyebrows, or well eye sockets…it’s when they come down..in shorter soft pants and a sleeveless hoodie, exposing their arms and legs for the first time.

It’s then that they would notice the very visible lichtenberg scar that runs down the front of their right leg and across their left arm, as though lightning had patterned itself onto their body. What is their reaction to this sight, of this scar along their friend’s body?

(I already have the story of how they got these scars written down, but I wanna see the boys reaction to the sight first)

The Player of Games - Review and Deconstruction I

So, in this whole “a friend is paying me to review books” deal, as it turns out, I need to actually review the book. So- The Player of Games, is it any good?

Yeah. Good book. Well written, tightly structured, asks fun questions. Don’t expect to fall in love with any characters. If you’ve ever wondered about the problem of ennui in Fully Automated Gay Space Communism, I have a book for you!

But I suppose the more interesting thing to write about is - what is there to get out of the book? Why, other than the joy of Iain Bank’s calvinball scenes, should someone read this?

Because it’s 2018 and like most things, the book’s about gender identity, masculinity and the allure of fascism1.

The breeze was cold and freshening under ragged clouds. Out to sea, beyond Hassease village, where the weather was coming from, he could see tall veils of rain under a dark front of storm clouds.2

Side note: I wrote a lot about this book, so I’m splitting it up into three parts. When I get all of them up I’ll edit in links. Part II: Azad: Vicious but Sexy Part III: Getting the Girl Handsome Androgynous Person

From this point forward, I assume knowledge of the text. So, spoiler warning.

Part 1 - Gurgeh’s a Dick

This was my second time through this book, and so I got to notice a lot of details I didn’t during my audiobook listen of it. I got to pick up on the significance of the names Possession and Stricken for games. I noticed how the three main boards of Azad paralleled the three main sections of the book: the Board of Origin (Gurgeh at Ikroh, introduction of the Culture and Gurgeh’s discontent), the Board of Form (Proper introduction of Azadian culture, and Gurgeh’s immersion into it), and the Board of Becoming (Gurgeh embraces his own Culture-al values). I also got to notice Flere-Imsaho’s machinations to manipulate Gurgeh, his bird watching habit, and a number of other details I missed on my initial listen.

Like this one other thing I noticed about this book: Castration comes up a lot.

Aha! A motif.

The first time it is mentioned explicitly comes while Mahwrin-Skel/Flere-Imsaho is in the midst of blackmailing Gurgeh to contact Contact and speak on its behalf. Reading this a second time, it is clear that the drone is very consciously and meticulously manipulating Gurgeh here- the drone hasn’t really been expelled from Special Circumstances, it doesn’t actually need Gurgeh to do this for it’s sake, this is all part of the ruse to get Gurgeh on the voyage to Azad. And so, in stating its case, in getting Gurgeh to have the strong emotional response that would compel him to act, Mahwrin-Skel is appealing to Gurgeh’s own sense of impotence and frustration with the Culture’s somewhat neutered mode of existence, all while Gurgeh has been literally paralyzed.

“Don’t you know what they’ve done to me, man?” the machine said, shaking him. “I’ve been castrated, spayed, paralyzed! How you feel now; helpless, knowing the limbs are there but unable to make them work! Like that, but knowing that they aren’t there! Can you understand that?”3

Then, as Gurgeh is beginning to get a sense of how Azad really works with real players and what this society values, he accompanies Shohobohohaum Za to - well, lets just call it a den of iniquity. There they witness a fight where a female Azadian - the first female Azadian we have seen be anything other than submissive and demure - wrestling a strange alien.

The audience behind them went “Oooo”. Za and Gurgeh turned round to see the victorious woman pulling her opponent’s body up out of the mud by its penis; the aliens being’s head and feet were still under the glutinous, slowly slopping liquid. “Ouch,” Za muttered, drinking.

Somebody in the crowd tossed the woman a dagger; she caught it, stooped, and sliced off the alien genitals. She brandished the dripping flesh aloft while the crowd went wild with delight and the alien sank slowly beneath the cloying red liquid, the woman’s foot on its chest. The mud gradually turned black where the blood oozed, and a few bubbles surfaced.4

And here Gurgeh gets to see literal castration. Given the space it’s given in the text, I think we can infer that this scene- wherein a woman supposedly selected for docile servility in this culture - violently slices off alien dick, makes an impact on Gurgeh. Indeed it does:

“I believe you are a male.”

“Yes,” Gurgeh said. His palms started to sweat.

“My bet is castration. Removal of the male member and testes against apicial gelding, on this one game on the Board of Origin. Do you accept?”

“I--” Gurgeh swallowed, but his mouth stayed dry. It was absurd; he was in no real danger. The Limiting Factor would rescue him; or he could just go through with it; he would feel no pain, and genitalia were some of the faster regrowing parts of the body… but still the room seemed to warp and distort in from of him, and he had a sudden, sickening vision of cloying red liquid, slowly staining black, bubbling… “Yes!” he blurted, forcing it out. “Yes,” he said to the Adjudicator.5

And so our castration setup begins its full payoff as Gurgeh is pressed into a body bet to progress further in the Azad tournament. Directly after accepting this bet, Gurgeh loses hope of winning this game, he loses the will to do so, and we learn that Olz Hap, the young woman who nearly beat Gurgeh at a game in the beginning of the book, has “produced the Ultimate Stricken result.” A final strike that leaves Gurgeh “unsure what to know, or think, or remember, or even be.”

But what did Gurgeh think he was before this?

For starters, an indefeatable game player, the best that the Culture has to offer. And, crucially, male.

“I feel you want to...take me.” Yay said, “like a piece, like an area. To be had; to be...possessed.” Suddenly she looked very puzzled. “There’s something very… I don’t know; primitive, perhaps, about you, Gurgeh. You’ve never changed sex, have you?” He shook his head. “Or slept with a man?” Another shake. “I thought so,” Yay said. “You’re strange, Gurgeh.”6

Most of the Culture seems to change gender with a fluid nonchalance. It gets mentioned in the background rather frequently - so-and-so is changing, this person spent so many years as a man, don’t let the aliens dissect your junk because the way we made it easily change is a state secret, etc. Gurgeh has some discomfort with the idea, however, and has avoided it. He’s even vaguely concerned to notice that six of the ten former lovers that showed up to bid him farewell became and stayed men. To Gurgeh, gender identity, his gender identity - his masculinity - is an essential part of him, and he fears losing (or not fulfilling) it.

This is also entwined with the other thing that sets him apart from the rest of the Culture: His drive to possess, to dominate. He plays games with conversations that make an unwitting opponent of someone he means to shame, to dominate, for fun. He is goaded into cheating at Stricken by the thought of not just winning, not just beating his opponent, but dominating the game itself by obtaining the Full Web victory condition. While he says his reputation isn't something that matters to him, it clearly does, as his reaction to the thought of being caught cheating is to threaten suicide. His position as the Culture’s dominant game-player is clearly very dear to him. I think the only reason he doesn’t like the shooting game at the very start of the book is that he’s not good at it- he can’t dominate.

This is also apparent with how he approaches relationships with women - he’s there to dominate, possess them, according to Yay. We also get to see him with Ren, and there he also displays more possessive traits while having sex with her. His bristling at the transitioning of his former lovers and his approach to women shows that he sees female-ness, femininity, as an important trait as well- one that has a role that he wants it to play. Namely, submission and passivity, even if he would attest otherwise. His subconscious desires and assumptions make themselves known. Femininity is there to be possessed and dominated by masculinity. Domination and possession are traits he codes as masculine, and so he values them as part of his identity as male.

So I think its clear that even before the body-bet happens, one of Gurgeh’s driving fears is emasculation and fluidity of gender roles.

Also the nature of truth and reality, which makes it even more relevant in 2018, but since I don’t really get in to that topic, I thought I’d leave it out of the opener.
