That is distinctly a wasp nest. Like this:

If you flipped that little drawing upside down, you would have something that looks like a straw skep, which is an old fashioned type of beehive, & one frequently used in honey/bee imagery today:

Perhaps that's where the art team was going, & then they got off track. Skeps are not often used for actual bees today, but they are a shape people recognize - and the one the hairstyle is named after! If you turn it upside down & hang it from a tree, though, you've just got wasps.
