For day #8, I'd like to do William Vicarage. He was another severely burned man at Jutland. This is a particularly revolutionary case because it he was the first patient to receive the Tubed Pedical, which if you don't know, was a skin graft invented by Harold Gillies. It's similar to the traditional flap, but it's stitched into a tube shape before being attached to the sight. This increases blood flow and diminishes the risk of infection. In Vicarages case, two V like grafts were taken from his chest and placed onto his cheeks, as seen in the first picture. The poor man had no lips or eyelids, and it took many surgeries and grafts to get him functional again, but as you can see In the last picture with him as an old man, he was infact returned to his former self, and lived a long and happy life.

Fix Skin
Our skin is a deceptively complex material, delicate but strong, protective but permeable. An ideal artificial skin substitute for wound healing must support blood vessel growth, have antibacterial properties, and be sufficiently porous for air and moisture exchange. A new approach has developed a scaffold to grow such tissue-engineered material by incorporating a glass-ceramic onto electrospun nanofibres made of chitosan – a sugar from shellfish outer skeletons – and gelatin (pictured). The scaffold was also laced with silver, which provides antibacterial properties, and was found to be compatible with the body and blood, and promoted cell growth. Connective cells (pink) fully attached and spread over the scaffold, and researchers then treated wounds on mice. The scaffolds showed good vessel and protein growth, and even supported the regeneration of glands and hair follicles, which means this approach may help wounds repair without leaving a scar.

"Eastern Pen Felons Set Up Skin Bank'," Philadelphia Inquirer. October 29, 1943. Page 27. --- A "skin bank," believed the first in the country, has been organized at Eastern Penitentiary, Dr. Herbert M. Goddard, chairman of the prison's board of trustees, announced yesterday.
He said he hoped to contact physicians and officials in other penitentiaries throughout the country in a program to establish similar skin banks in other prisons.
Dr. Goddard disclosed that 50 long-term convicts at Eastern Penitentiary have been typed, found physically fit and are ready to give donations of skin whenever they are needed, he said.
A possibility of the bank, Dr. Goddard said, is that it may provide skin for service men who have suffered severe burns.
The bank is an outgrowth of recent appeals to convicts to give skin to children who have been badly burned. Three long-term convicts volunteered for grafting operations which were declared "entirely successful."
Dr. Alma Dea Morani, plastic surgeon, who made the first call for volunteers at that time, assisted in setting up the bank.

grif's surgery but just a little more... obvious?
I actually rly rly ADORE frankengrif but I don't have an in-show reason why he'd have extensive long-term allogeneic skingrafts on his face 😔
#rvb#red vs blue#dexter grif#grif#*24#mine#art#cw wounds#Look I love biology stuff like this so I like researching what would be at least semi-plausible even if it's just for a dumb halo show that#makes 0 sense where CPR cures a headshot but i cant help it!!! and like the 'lazy' reason for it would be sarge is just crazy like that but#its not a good reason imo. and like the things he lists needing replacement are mostly internal and body parts which makes sense#considering how grif got injured by sheila like I could 100% see that rupturing organs and crushing his hand and there being burns etc#but like nothing points to grif needing any surgery above the neck and i dont think anyone mentions his face being different? i could#make up injuries for him but nothing in the show actually supports that he'd need grafts for anything but his body..#I'm SOO ready to be convinced otherwise btw like I said I want an obvious frankengrif to be true so bad !!#AGH would it be too insane of me to make like a surgery/injury overview thing for grif just so i can convince myself abt this idea...#i can bend to some fun stuff tho im not a total joykill u know! thats why i give his body the mismatched donor skin look despite allogeneic#grafts not being permanent w/ current tech. like it really doesn't matter if it's realistic or whatever but also Yes It Does.#and like during/after chorus would grey offer to 'fix' it? i imagine the feds could mesh a skin so they could use grif's own skin..#or like during rats nest when they got reassigned?

Natsuo: I saw that crazy doctor is finally going to trial. That’s a relief. What a fraud.
Dabi: Yeah, he’s a mad genius or whatever. He’s the one who sowed me up like this.
Natsuo, a medical resident: …
Dabi: What?
Natsuo: You know…skin grafts are a thing. That’s what anyone sane would have done.
Dabi: Are you saying I was medical malpracticed?
