Alarak is scared of Talandar send tweet
(this is my interpretation please don't bully me)
ok but really. Idk, playing through all the cutscenes with him in it and listening to him speak I notice there are a couple of points where Alarak's speech gets fast. Usually he's quite careful, his speech is slow and drawn out with emphasis on certain words, but I picked up on two points in his time on the Spear of Adun that stuck out.
The first time was when he first talks to Artanis on the Spear. His vindictiveness towards Talandar and the way he is so quick to insult him is frankly a little bit out of place compared to everything else, the jabs are instant and vicious.
The second time something stuck out to me was when Artanis is hopeful that he can use the small window of time after destroying Amon's body to free everyone from the khala. The way Alarak speaks to Artanis then, the weedy sort of persuasion, the quick way that he speaks, I don't know. It's still hidden under five layers of arrogance, but it seems almost desperate, like he can't see a good outcome to what Artanis is suggesting because he can't control the outcome and so he is trying to pivot everything back to something that he can control. He's scared.
With the Tal'darim, the Vanguards are there as a testament to the failure of the protoss trapped inside it. They couldn't even have the courtesy to die in battle, so they can die in a machine shell instead right at the bottom of the chain, basically a slave. I think that the Purifiers, at least to a Tal'darim, exemplify something similar. They were not given the glory of death and instead shoved inside a machine after the fact, and then used as slaves for a while too.
(also wanted to note that the only time I ever really heard him directly refer to someone as a servant was Probius in Heroes of the Storm and Talandar, so the idea that robot = slave is a thing in this man's head)
And because I think that Alarak is very scared to die, and he's very much against being anyone's slave, just because of how much effort he's gone through to get to a point where he thinks he's untouchable, and how carefully he likes to control the odds so that they're in his favour, Talandar exemplifies his worst-case scenario, and he hates him, and he's scared of him because of that.
(And the headcanon of giving him a mechanical leg to constantly remind him of the one time that he wasn't as careful as he should have been and that he is closer to Talandar than he would like to admit to emphasise this point is funny)
(but also once again this is my interpretation I rotate this man a lot in my brain sorry for the long post)

I made this draft of a meme parody of "She's a wolf in mouse clothing" on YouTube and I made audio of this with a wolf howling instead of a guy (who is a chef or one of the soldiers from Full Metal Jacket film) shouting the war face video.
Somehow I'll make the images for the parody of that video that features all three casts, Artanis, Alarak, and a wolf.

This draft was sketched on a small whiteboard and edited.
Don't repost this sketch without my permission!

Making Beads with Fig Tree Shoots//İncir Dalından Boncuk Yapımı

You can easily make your own beads from young tree shoots.I first saw this idea at @foragedfibers feed in which she uses willow and dogwood branches.
In our garden we have a couple of fig trees and some volunteer ones that pop up in odd corners. So I cut a young shoot and snipped it into small pieces. Then with a sharp stick I pushed away the soft sap. That’s it!
///

You can make stripes by stripping some of the green bark with a knife.

İsterseniz bıçakla dış kabuğu soyarak çizgiler yapabilirsiniz.

Ezri’s Ascension
(A little one shot about my OC Ezri becoming Queen of a new faction where Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss live together in peace on what was once Tarsonis but is now named Haven. Ezri was adopted by Alarak and Vorazun after being found in a Hybrid facility during the End War and was raised by them together after Amon was defeated. She was born to a Khalai pilot named Yasanda and a Terran named Evan Fergus both of which who were kidnapped from their homes and experimented on in the facility.)
Alarak squinted at Ezri proudly from the corner of the room. She was dressed in a beautiful black dress with a crimson mesh train to it and matching sleeves. Her raven black hair had been artfully braided by her servants and she wore just a tiny amount of makeup to highlight her best features. She reminded him of Vorazun on their wedding day and he chuckled bringing her attention to him.
“Daddy! I wasn't sure you'd come. I thought you needed to visit Aiur!” She admitted walking over and hugging him tightly. He laughed nuzzling her forehead.
“And miss my baby girl becoming Queen of a whole faction? I wouldn't miss it for the universe. You look stunning, though, I think you can do with one more thing.” He teased turning her around and clasping a necklace around her neck. It was a simple gold chain with a small glowing white stone at the bottom. Ezri smiled examining the stone briefly.
“It belonged to your mother. I had it retrieved from-” Alarak was cut off, his arms suddenly full of his daughter as she hugged him again.
“Thank you, daddy. I know where you got it and it's perfect.” She said before finally letting him go. A servant entered bowing to them.
“The elders are waiting for you, whenever you are ready.” He announced and Ezri turned to Alarak holding out her hand.
“Would you?” She asked and he nodded covering her hand with his own much larger claw.
“I'd be honored.” He agreed and lead her out of the room.
In the throne room, six people stood by the throne, three Protoss on one side and three Terrans on the other. Alarak stopped in the center and squeezed his daughter's hand in encouragement. The first elder Terran from the very left approached them and Ezri bowed respectfully.
“Do you swear on your very life to be just in your rulings for or against the people which enter or reside in this realm no matter the circumstances should you be crowned queen?” He asked and Ezri gave a brief nod.
“I swear on my very life to be just in all my rulings over any lives which enter or are residing in this realm no matter the circumstances should I be crowned queen.” She swore bowing again as he was replaced by the person that had been standing to the right of him.
“Do you swear on your very life to not abuse the power that would be given to you should you be crowned queen of this realm?” The older woman asked and she once again swore.
“Do you agree that the protection of this realm against those who wish it harm will be your first priority and should it be destroyed your life shall be sacrificed with it?” The third Terran asked and Ezri agreed. This Terran handed her an iron scepter before he returned to stand next to his comrades. The Protoss from the very right came next, dressed in formal Khalai attire.
“Do you swear that the safety of this kingdom will come before all love interests no matter what?” They asked and Ezri nodded.
“I swear the safety of this kingdom will come before all matters of my heart no matter what.” She swore.
The next Protoss who was more clearly a Nerazim put a hand on Ezri's shoulder closing their eyes before opening them and squinting at her.
“I declare her heart pure of evil and her judgments fair. She has no lust for power or ambitions of hatred.” They said handing her a highly decorated golden dagger before returning and the last Protoss came forward and Ezri knelt.
“Ezri, foundling of Alarak who is Highlord of the Tal’darim and Matriarch Vorazun of Shakuras, child of Yasanda the Gentle of Aiur and the Terran warrior Evan Fergus. You have sworn an oath to this kingdom and been cleared of evil intent. Do you accept this crown and the responsibilities it signifies along with the title of Queen of Haven?” He asked holding an iron and emerald crown over her head.
“I do.” She said and the Tal’darim placed the crown on her head.
“Then I name you Queen Ezri of Haven the Truthful and Just. Stand and claim your throne.” He spoke and Ezri stood walking to the throne and sat down giving her father a smile. All the spirits bowed deeply to her before vanishing. Ezri sat the items aside as Alarak walked over to her.
“Do you think my mom would be proud of me?” She asked softly and Alarak nodded.
“She would have been extremely proud. I'm proud of you. You deserve this, my beautiful little Queen.” He promised and Ezri smiled.
“Thank you, daddy.” She said.

In an effort to make more viable maps, we’re making some adjustments to Warhead Junction that are... not extreme at all. Perfectly reasonable. We’re just redesigning the whole map layout, adding teleporters, and removing a boss. We feel like this is only going to have the effects we imagine and not lead to weird crazy shit.
Mal’Ganis is a hero who lives on a very careful edge. A little buff could make him impossibly oppressive, while a nerf too far renders him entirely unplayable. So we’re buffing him veeeeeeeeeeery slightly. Just a tiny bit. Probably enough to make him impossibly oppressive for a few weeks. But hey, we’ll nerf some other first-ban heroes and things will be fine.
This patch has a very targeted focus on talent diversity. Starting with Anub’arak, we’re trying desperately to determine how to make a talent that competes with Rewind. I told them it wasn’t possible, but they’re trying. Maybe if they can make it work, we’ll come around to Muradin.
Gonna go for the read more now. Click through for more talent diversity!
For reasons that I can’t fathom, Chen is being buffed. Again. By far the best hero in the game, and we’re just going to keep buffing him until I’m not the only one who realizes it.
Dehaka and Falstad have long been very difficult to balance. Global pressure is very potent, meaning they need to be strictly worse in a straight fight than their counterparts. But if we put them on the patch notes, they’ll get played, so we’re buffing all of their worst talents for the sake of talent diversity and hoping for the best.
Gazlowe is undergoing the same trajectory as D.va, in the wake of the rework. It took us some numbers adjustments, but now he’s ridiculously overtuned and seeing a ridiculous ban rate, and so warrants a nudge back down, including almost every talent in the now-dominant turret build. D.va is receiving a talent diversity adjustment, to look forward to that for Gazlowe in the next patch.
Leoric spent a long time as the most reliable offlaner in the game, but the rest of the pack has been slowly buffed and reworked and buffed again, leaving him in the dust. A small nudge up - along with some talent diversity buffs - might help him catch up.
Malthael is fine. I promise Malthael is fine. He’s absolutely not bad. We’re giving him some adjustments for talent diversity - because he completely has some talents that are 100% useless - but he doesn’t need any serious buffs. He’s fine. Don’t worry about it.
Apparently - spoiler warning - Shadowlands, the newest WoW expansion, is the afterlife. Varian is a character who died in that world, so we’re hedging some bets and buffing him in case he appears and ends up being plot-relevant. Maybe if he has a diverse talent tree, we can poach some WoW players?
The following heroes have received small talent diversity adjustments that are honestly too small and stupid for me to think up individual jokes for all of them: Alarak Azmodan Lunara Orphea Sgt. Hammer Tychus
Sylvanas’s talent diversity change is a buff to Mind Control, which is honestly the funniest joke I’ve ever heard, so I feel it deserves its own private space for us all to laugh at it.
#Heroes of the Storm#Patch Notes#We also buffed Alexstrasza's W range#first of all so that while running a max range cast will go off while she walks over it#But also so that I'd have to see if I can remember how to spell Alexstrasza#I keep forgetting if the S or the Z comes first

16. Relationships: When and how did you first encounter the entity?
On the second day of this challenge I wrote that I am unable to see signs unless are very into my face. Well, today is the time for that story.
More than two years back I was doing some reading on what I should do about a situation concerning a person close to me. When I was done, I got my old tarot deck and small chunk of obsidian “mirror” for cleansing. Out of a sudden some unusual warmth expanded in the room. Initially I thought the housing cooperative started to heat up apartments again, because it had been cold the night before. Since my radiator was switched off, I went back to do my usual thing. Or tried to, due to the energy feeling somewhat unsettling. As if someone was present in my room. I ignored it (which was a mistake) and grabbed the obsidian piece to put it in my "clean me" pile.
I shrieked as I noticed a pretty clear reflection of eyes that weren't mine. As much as I consider myself sceptical, this was pretty difficult to ignore. My first thought was to banish the living shit out of whatever it was, but after consulting someone I decided to maybe ask some questions beforehand. I was always reaching out to aspects myself, this was the first time it happened other way around. First message I got was along lines of an irritated "WHY do you keep ignoring ME?" sentence - no name, no reasons as if to why they're here, just ...this.
According to the entity, who later turned out to be my perception of Highlord Alarak, I had been ignoring the "signs" for about three weeks. The same three weeks during which nothing exceptional happened. Besides from moments where things were going too well, suddenly finding right words for right situations and being obsessed with rubies and garnets (as an applied geology B.E. I found it normal). None of which I would ever consider any signs at all individually, but together they seemed slightly out of place.
When all the proofs of signs were gathered and properly discussed, the entity replied with certain smugness "Very well, since I got your attention, you serve me now. Your new duties begin tomorrow" and left. And that's how I met the most direct entity I ever worked with.

Falling Into Place
So this is the first chapter of an original novel that I’m working on that I decided to post.
I welcome comments and constructive critisism.
Like, seriously
Please tell me what you think of it.
Warnings for blood, death, and execution.
He couldn’t sit still.
Nikai sighed, foot tapping incessantly on the wood floor, and his fingers brushing through the pages of the book in his lap.
He tried to focus on the book, but his eyes kept drifting to the bright sky outside.
On any other day Nikai would have already been lost in the inky words covering the worn pages, but today something inside him screamed. Something important was going to happen today, and Nikai knew he wanted to be there for it.
Tearing his eyes away from the window Nikai looked at the water clock tucked into the corner, a little before one o’clock, close enough that it would be acceptable for him to practice before his lessons. He knew that he’d be distracted no matter what he did, but at least this way he’d be moving.
Nikai strode down the stairs and through the halls giving polite nods in response to the bows and curtsies of the servants as he passed. He emerged into the bright light shining on the courtyard and grabbed a dulled training sword. His instructor would bring all of his real weapons, which were locked away in the armory, so this would do for the time being. The dull strip of metal was no replacement for Nikai’s beautifully crafted twin blades, but Nikai found it mattered little as he fell into the familiar motions.
His vision manifested a ghostly figure clutching an indistinct blade in front of Nikai’s eyes. He crouched into a ready stance, and the figure charged forward. The screaming restlessness that had been plaguing him faded to the back of his mind as Nikai crossed blades with his imaginary opponent.
Nikai had bested a dozen false enemies by the time his instructor made his appearance.
At first Nikai didn’t even notice the grizzled soldier’s entrance. It took Malakai grabbing the young man’s wrist and snapping his fingers in Nikai’s face to get his attention.
Nikai turned wide-eyed to his teacher, “Ah, Malakai...didn’t see you there.”
Malakai narrowed his eyes in a clear message to the young noble, ‘Fix that.’
Malakai jerked his head toward the bench where he’d set Nikai’s weapons; a set of twin swords made from a gold-nickel alloy, twin knives made from the same metal, a mountain laurel longbow, and a quiver of aluminum arrows. Nikai dashed over to the bench and grabbed the long blades on the far left side. Malakai watched approvingly as his student inspected the blades for any irregularity and scratched at the skin under his beard.
The collarbone length beard was Malakai’s, rather paltry, attempt to hide the scars on his neck from when he’d been caught in a rockslide many years ago. Several rocks had managed to cut and crush parts of his throat, resulting in both the scars and the permanent loss of his voice.
The order in which Malakai placed Nikai’s weapons on the bench was an important part of the system of communication the two had established; as Nikai only had the barest grasp of Alerian sign language. Malakai always placed the weapons on the bench in the order they’d work with them, left to right. It cut out some of the writing and awkward gesturing, though some was unavoidable.
Though the loss of his voice had made it difficult to continue as a soldier Malakai had still led a small, but effective, squadron for several more years until his retirement, and he remained one of the best warriors in the nation. Which was why Nikai’s father, Karal Anaka, had hired him.
Malakai had taught both of Nikai’s older brothers, Jayden and Zarak, but neither had been as dedicated of students as Nikai.
Nikai finished his inspection of the shimmering blades, and turned to face Malakai. Malakai readied his stance and pulled out his own twin swords.
Nikai struck first, darting forward to deliver an experimental slash to Malakai’s chest. The older man blocked the blade in a shower of sparks, and retaliated with a slash at Nikai’s leg. Nikai reversed his grip on his free blade to block the strike. Then pulled the blade up, scratching against the opposing guard, to jab the pommel into Malakai’s sternum. The soldier’s breath abandoned him in a gasp, and he half doubled-over the weapon. Malakai quickly stepped back to free his blades and catch his breath.
PHVOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sharp blast of a conch horn shattered the relative silence.
Nikai’s eyes darted in the direction of the sound, his grip on his weapons loosening.
Then Malakai moved.
He darted forward while Nikai was distracted and fell into a crouch, scything his leg toward Nikai he swept the young blond off his feet. Nikai’s blades slipped from his lax grasp as his back collided with the stone ground and forced the air from his lungs. Malakai swiftly rose from his crouch into a battle ready stance and leveled the tip of one of his swords at Nikai’s throat.
Nikai groaned and raised his head as much as he could, chest heaving. He wanted nothing more than to keep the spar going. His swords weren’t too far away, and if he moved quickly and quietly enough he could land a strike at the back of Malakai’s knee before the man could avoid it. The sword at his throat wasn’t so close as to render him immobile. He could do it, but…
Nikai’s eyes drifted back in the direction of the horn blast.
They both knew what that meant.
Malakai drew his sword away from Nikai’s throat and stepped back, jerking his head towards the front gate of the courtyard.
Nikai nodded and leapt to his feet. He fumbled to grab his fallen swords still trying to catch his breath. Once his blades were safely sheathed and placed on the bench Nikai ran for the gate, going only slightly slower than a full sprint.
Nikai wove his way through the crowd gathering around the stage in the center of the capitol just half a mile in front of the Queen’s castle. The crowd shuffled uncomfortably around him. No one would look directly at the stage, and many people had tears in their eyes.
The entire city balanced on a knife edge; waiting for The Death Goddess to decide how many would fall.
Nikai swallowed around a lump in his throat, his shoulders tensing. Thaneri would visit this city today.
Nikai bent over his knees gasping like he’d forgotten how to breathe as soon as he reached one of the boxes settled around the back and sides of the stage. As soon as his breathing evened Nikai straightened and wiped the sweat from his forehead and limp hair. Then stepped up the stairs to join his father and brothers; all of whom looked far better put together than he did.
Nikai took his place to Zarak’s left. He could practically feel the heat of his father’s disapproving glare at his state on his brother’s other side, but the full weight of Karal’s disapproval would come later. To speak now would be a grave mistake.
A second horn blast sounded through the city, and a gilded palanquin draped in rare, expensive red silk was carried through the gap in the boxes where other noble families stood, though many were empty, at the back of the stage.
The servants carrying the ornate structure set it down on the stage and two retreated back down the stairs while the remaining two stood to either side.
Behind the palanquin came six figures cloaked in distinctive gray and black hooded uniforms. Each wore a unique mask over their eyes; telling the people exactly who they were.
Lightning.
Dust.
Wind.
Fire.
Snow.
Ice.
Rain.
The Storm Riders.
The Queen’s elite personal soldiers and assassins.
Seven of the greatest minds and warriors in the country.
Seven.
One of them was missing. Dust was notably absent.
Nikai narrowed his eyes at the space between Wind and Lightning where Dust usually stood. What reason could there be for him not to be standing there.
Before he could consider it any further the two servants beside the palanquin stepped forward and pulled the two drapes of silk covering the front apart to reveal a woman seated in a simple throne.
The Alerian Queen, Kiera.
She stepped forward, the sun glinting off her dark hair and the gold band woven with diamond shards on her head that symbolised her power.
Kiera stepped gracefully and deliberately forward, and Wind and Rain moved forward to flank her.
The Queen and her guards stopped several feet from the edge of the stage, and Kiera opened her mouth to address the people.
“People of Aleria,” she began, voice strong and resonating, “fifteen years ago this country was wreathed in chaos and strife. Cities were divided, and families were torn apart. The mistakes of our former King led to the Alerian Civil War, ten long years of suffering. I had made it my goal to end that suffering, and five years ago succeeded. For five years we have rebuilt our proud nation, but our fight is not over! The people set to come before you now sought to usurp our hard-earned peace. The efforts of my Storm Riders ensured that this would be a futile goal, but though they were stopped there are others who share their aspirations. Those people must learn that we are no longer a nation to be trifled with!”
As she spoke three guards led a line of prisoners onto the stage. Five men and women in shackles and blindfolds marching with resigned, trembling steps. Most of them shook like branches in a hurricane, more than one had tears streaming from under their blindfolds, and as they passed Nikai heard one man reciting a prayer to Alarak under his breath over and over.
Prayers to the God of Justice will not save you now, Nikai thought scathingly, justice is what you are about to receive.
Only one in the line of prisoners stood strong. He was fifth and last in the line. He had the same dark hair and tawny skin as most natives to the island, but was far more toned and solidly muscled than the average citizen. He stared dead ahead as though he wasn’t blindfolded, and his jaw was as stiff and solid as a mountain.
The guards marched them to the front of the stage several meters to the Queen’s left.
“These people, will be their example.” Kiera stated.
The woman first in line was pulled forward and knocked to her knees. Her head was forced onto an aluminum chopping block leaving her neck exposed. One of the guards pulled a gold-nickel axe off his back and stepped up beside her. The other guard’s foot on her back ensured that she wouldn’t be able to avoid her fate.
The first guard raised his axe.
The tension in the air reached its apex.
People in the crowd looked away as subtly as they could. Many pulled their children to their sides, hiding their child’s face in the fabric of their clothes so they wouldn’t see.
The axe fell, cleanly severing the woman’s head from her body with a sharp ring as the axe hit the block. Blood spilled from her corpse and severed head pooling across the top of the block. The blood spread like a flood, staining the woman’s frozen face.
The guard’s partner didn’t even flinch. Instead she lifted the woman’s head by its hair releasing a deluge of blood sending the red life liquid drip, drip, dripping over the edge of the block.
The female guard dropped the head at the edge of the stage spattering blood across the panels, and sending the nearest spectators darting back to avoid the splash. A few weren’t quick enough, and their faces were speckled with drops of blood.
The other guard tossed the body carelessly to the side.
The girl walked back to the third guard and grabbed the next in line; the man who still muttered prayers as he was dragged forward and forced to kneel in his compatriot’s blood.
Again and again and again the axe fell, each time spilling a little more blood...each time stealing one more life.
Finally it was the last man’s turn. The Storm Riders seemed to become even more alert as he was dragged forward, their eyes following him almost sadly.
The guards pushed him to his knees and forced his head onto the block.
The man hadn’t flinched once throughout the execution, despite the sounds of heads being cleaved and the ringing of the axe striking the aluminum block, and he didn’t flinch now. Even through the blindfold he seemed to stare right at the Queen. Then he said something.
Nikai couldn’t make it out, but Kiera tensed and narrowed her eyes.
As though he could sense her response, the man gave a toothy smirk.
Then there was a spray of blood and a harsh ring as, one final time…
The axe fell.

Alarak is younger than Riri
I have decided
It's a good thing I'm updating his ref sheet to reflect stuff gjsfdg
Just a decision after talking with others and sitting on it for a good long while, I think it fits better. Also I just think it's really funny that the too-tall, looks like he's an old man guy is younger than the too small, baby-faced woman he has to put up with.

Medivh and genji have talents that activate based on the amount of dmg mitigated by their skills. Alarak doesn As long as he hit by anything, his counterstrike triggers and shoots out. The key part of counterstrike that alarak needs to see is the damage he hits enemies with, not what damage he mitigated.. You forgot Taena of Myr is at court, and she definitely more important than Jalabhar Xho. The myrish are supposed to look like the rhoynar and have olive skin, but really 남양주출장마사지 it depends on what you understand by white. For example, I don consider the the Qartheen to be white just because of their skintone, same way I don consider fair skinned middle eastern/north african people white.. Idk, this post just reminds me of a decade ago when the Wii had just come out and game journalists were heralding the end of Nintendo bcuz console sales weren great and nobody was developing games for it and how the company was gonna go bankrupt unless they sold all their IP to mobile game devs. Those claims are so laughable when viewed through today lense and I can help but feel similarly about a lot of the vitriol towards Artifact and Valve in this sub. Just seems kinda short sighted.. The practical experience helped me figure out what I liked. There is also the practical route as well. Anthropology and it related disciplines is very hard to make work, even with the grades, experience and connections you may very well have to live out of a tent or off ever mounting loans. So many korean like to buy it from EU and US websites with using shipping agents and use purchasing agent for store and outlet in EU and US. It is very common more than buying reps. Of course custom charged tax, but still very great deal. I played around with skills here and there and this was what I currently landed on. Aether really saved me. I was up against a Veronica, Reinhardt, Ayra, and dancer Micaiah. He stopped talking after a few minutes but his tongue was moving so to me that seemed he was ok. [score hidden] submitted 2 hours agoSugar is actually easier than vanilla for me regarding anxiety about people getting back to me or worrying if I did something wrong. I'm pretty secure about my role in a SDs life. He likes me (or at least parts of me) enough to pay for my company. Solid advice! Especially the bit about complimenting hair style or clothing choices. It's a small thing that's easy to overlook and doesn't often get adequately verbalized, but (very) generally speaking people like being complimented on things they chose deliberately to express themselves rather than things they can't control. Tiny distinction with big implications.. Assuming that you are truly asking in good faith, I am not going to address what may/may not have been her understanding of the situation when she was with her ex and didn openly acknowledge you. But for when she was alone and you ignored her trying to say hello and you say yourself her expression seemed hurt that you didn respond regardless of it it was "right" cause you think she was trying to get with you when she wasn single, that had to have hurt her feelings. If that was her last in person interaction with you, it can have left a positive impression.

StarCraft Fanfiction: “No Omen, No Country’s Cause”
A few months ago, during the StarCraft 20th anniversary celebration, I created a blog for the sole purpose of remedying a great injustice: according to an infographic I saw here on Tumblr, fanfiction involving my favorite character, Vice Adm. Alexei Stukov, comprised only 1% of StarCraft fanfiction (in English, I’m assuming).
And so I embarked on a months-long odyssey, putting together what I thought would be a short story about how Stukov would react to the UED returning to the Koprulu sector. What it turned into is a multi-perspective, most likely novella- length text that I think would work well as a serial.
In “No Omen, No Country’s Cause,” I seek to reconcile discordant parts of Stukov’s personality, give him something to live for, flesh out his backstory, make him to engage in some badassery, and get him back to where he was in SC: Brood War (personality wise). Along the way, expect a lot of battles, new characters, and interactions with other canon characters like Adm. Matt Horner, Valerian Mengsk, Alarak, Zagara, and others.
This teaser is rated T, but expect some chapters to be M for language, violence, sexual content, and zergy squish-squish. I’ll probably post small bits once or twice a week, releasing what I’ve written so far and giving me a chance to write more. I do see myself finishing it (I’ve already written the ending but not the middle) unless there’s just zero interest.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. If you’d like to view this in a different format, it is also available on FanFiction.net, Archive of Our Own, and Wattpad under the same username.
Note: someone pointed out this sounds like it’s going to get political. I promise it is not.
“No Omen, No Country’s Cause”
TARSONIS CITY, TARSONIS: 09:55
"Five minutes to air time, people. Let's get moving!" Kate Lockwell paced behind Adm. Matthew Horner as he stood at his podium. From the side of the makeshift stage, she shouted at a few people in the wings. "Tim! Where's Kallie with the other camera?"
"The replacement lens didn't come in. Wasn't a 'priority' shipment and didn't make it through customs. She knows a guy uptown and she's going to borrow one. She'll be back in fifteen minutes."
"Fifteen?!"
"We'll start without her! It'll be fine. No one will notice we're down a camera."
"They'll notice if we're down two presidential debaters... Where're my challenger candidates?" Kim Lockwell stopped on her heel and put her hand on the shoulder of Horner's blue suit.
"Well, if there's one thing that I can say for you military types, at least you're punctual, Mr. President." She winked at him, and before he could respond, she was gone.
Horner leaned over the podium and looked into the "audience." In the makeshift broadcast room, there were about two-dozen seats, all of which were full of journalists from around the sector-Umoja, Moria, and even some of the outlying colonies. All were there to see the beginning of Tarsonis's new government as it shifted from the Terran Dominion to the Terran Republic. After defeating Amon and negotiating peace with the zerg under Zagara, Valerian Mengsk had begun focusing on rebuilding Tarsonis and Korhal, and that's when the political shitstorm started. The Dominion needed the Umojan Protectorate's help, but they refused to acknowledge a "medieval monarchy spawned by a dictator" as a valid government even though it was constitutional. The Umojans also released more information about Valerian that was potentially damaging-that the labs run by Mobius Corp. had been more closely supervised by him than he had originally said. Skygeirr Station was the most egregious. Horner had asked him, man-to-man, what he actually knew. He had told him that he was only aware they were performing experiments on zerg and xel'naga tissues-he didn't know about the hybrid breeding program. But he did know about what they were doing to UED POW Vice Admiral Alexei Stukov. Valerian said that he willingly turned a blind eye to what they did to him because he thought it vital, at the time, to finding a way to neutralize Sara Kerrigan. Whether it was because he was UED or because he was infested and technically zerg, news reports focused on the hybrids and glossed over the torture of someone he knew to be a decent man. If it bothered Valerian, it was hard to see, which made Horner watchful of him now, waiting for more of his father to emerge. The Umojan Protectorate has a point, Horner thought.
Valerian was forced to step down, and his cabinet named Horner as his interim successor until the Terran Republic could build its infrastructure enough to hold an election. The Umojan Protectorate began helping Tarsonis pick up the pieces of the coup against Arcturus Mengsk and the invasion by the Queen of Blades. It had been five years, and Horner was just now thinking that he had the hang of governing-and now he would have to publicly debate other candidates and run for the position to keep it for another five years. Even so, Horner had doubts about his leadership capabilities. Raynor should be up here-not me, he thought. But he knew that would never have worked. Jim Raynor had not wanted to lead even when he was with the Raiders. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them, he thought, Valerian was the first, Raynor the second... But Valerian was disgraced and Raynor had vanished. Hopefully I'm the third... After Valerian stepped down and the smoke cleared, there weren't many other options.
Horner took a deep breath and thumbed again through his notes on the datapad in front of him. His main talking points were those of national security. They had been burned before by outside threats. Other than a few outlying factions, the protoss were their allies, but on the other hand, the zerg, even with Zagara leading them, could be fractured by a new leader-just as Abathur almost had done. Worse, if Horner had learned anything, it was the threat that could not be predicted that always ...bites you in the ass. Restructuring was also critical. The military needed its academies back online, and the education system-especially on Tarsonis-needed new buildings, updated materials, and staff that were not praising the "glory of the Dominion." Trade deals with the Kel-Morians and the Umojan Protectorate to bring food and other resources to people who needed it were his other sticking points. Things we can all agree on, not too detailed, and enough to talk about but not enough to make me look like a boring, stuffed uniform-I hope.
Finally, one of the other candidates entered the studio. The journalists all stood at once, their cameras flashing as she strode in. He recognized her; It was Dr. Joan Slavens, a philosophy professor at Tarsonis City Colonial University, the largest and most prestigious public universities on Tarsonis-before it was shut down by the Dominion. She had settled into being a nuisance via private broadcasts during the war. Horner had watched a few of them. Dr. Slavens was a good speaker, and she had the air of a rumpled intellectual with her barely-tamed blonde curls and wrinkled tweed jacket. She waved warmly to the journalists. This made him even more nervous. Dr. Slavens was a well-known personality and respected. She already had a following, and it would be easy for her to build a bloc of voters. He, on the other hand, had name recognition, and was known as a war hero on one hand but a compatriot of the now-controversial Valerian Mengsk on the other-his alliances could make someone's decision either way.
Dr. Slavens took her place at the podium next to his and adjusted her microphone, tapping on it to test it. She put her hand over it and turned to Horner, giving him a rueful smile.
"Of course, Mr. Marinakis isn't here yet. I hope his freighters are timelier than he is."
"You have some experience with Marcos Marinakis?"
"Unfortunately, yes. He told me he would let me interview him for my vids a half a dozen times... He was a no-show on half of them and more than an hour late on the rest. We could be here a while. I mean, this only a presidential debate, after all. I'm sure his business brunch was much more pressing."
"Well, if he's much later, we'll have to start without him."
Marcos Marinakis was a shipping magnate-one of the few that wasn't Kel-Morian. He had a reputation of being loud, obnoxious, but shrewd in business. Some people would believe that would make him good at guiding the Republic, but Horner didn't really see him as a threat. Because of his manner and what inevitably comes out about anyone who runs a large company, he was by far a long shot.
Horner's thoughts were interrupted by a low rumble far in the distance. It shook the building, and a little bit of plaster rained from the ceiling.
"What the hell was that?" Lockwell said. Horner's security detail, two marines in street combat gear, came in from outside the room.
"Mr. President, we have reports of an attack on the outskirts of town heading inward to our position. We need to get you all to a secure location."
"Where?" Horner said quickly.
"The basement of this building is a nuclear bunker. We should be able to hide out there."
Horner sprung into action.
"All right everyone, listen," Horner said into the microphone. "We're all going to do this quietly and without panicking. Please follow these gentlemen downstairs. Keep aware of your surroundings..."
There was another rumble and the power went out. Horner shouted over the din of fighting and the journalists talking nervously among themselves.
"And don't panic."
The journalists filed out of the room with Horner taking up the rear. He paused to look out the window. Republic troops had began flooding into the streets, and before them, a nydus canal had opened. The infested crawled from its maw, waves of them flooding over abandoned hovercars and the makeshift barriers troops had constructed along the way. In the distance, a siege tank and a platoon of Terran Republic troops began firing at them, but were overwhelmed by the sea of flesh and claws almost instantly. With dread, Horner realized there could be only one person responsible: Stukov.
And there's the threat we didn't anticipate.
