Hey! You're tutorial on drawing burn scars was really helpful. I've been trying to draw burns for a while and I could just never find a tutorial for drawing them, especially not one that showcased burns on multiple skin colors.

I have a question though, and I'm not entirely sure if you'll be able to answer it or point me at a good resource, but I figured I'd ask anyways.

In the guide you have some different types of burn scars listed (hypertrophic, keloid, and contracture). Do you know what causes each type to scar differently? Is it the severity of the burn? Or something else.

Hi! Fair question!

As for the severity: 1st degree burns very rarely leave anything behind after they heal and if they do it's usually mild skin discoloration. 2nd degree sometimes leaves some scarring but it usually fades away after some time since it's partial thickness, but deeper 2nd degree burns can cause permanent scarring that'll generally be less severe than those caused by higher degrees and mostly be hypertrophic. Third degree basically always leaves scars of all kinds. There might be tissue loss, so parts like ears or nose can be gone. Fourth degree is defined as going all the way to the bone, so the place with the burn will often be amputated because well it's just bone left. In this way it doesn't really leave scars I guess? But the area that's left will usually have severe scarring of basically any type.

For location: Hypertrophic scars happen wherever but are more common in places where skin is tight rather than loose. Pressure garments are used to prevent the hypertrophy so if for example your character wore compression sleeves as prescribed on their arms but nothing on their chest, the scars would probably be much more visible (more thick, discolored, and probably more painful as well) on their chest.

Keloids tend to form on the shoulders, cheeks, chest, and most commonly ears, but there is not much room to get a keloid there when it comes to burns - often if there is enough damage for them to scar, there will be tissue loss first. Keloids also happen more often in people with darker skin because their formation has something to do with melanocytes. Some people are also just more susceptible to getting keloids and if you have one you have a higher chance of getting another. Because of this keloids are rarely removed because they tend to just come back.

Contracture scars tend to happen where regular contractions do - where things move around a lot. So joints, facial and neck muscles, and especially digits. Contractures get less visible with physical therapy, wearing things like splints, or surgeries (like z-plasty or just skin grafts/flaps) that loosen them up and/or allow for more range of movement.

Ofc this is more of a rough guideline than anything else, every scar can potentially form anywhere and from anything (I'm just mentioning what's the Most Typical) and it depends on what resources someone has available to them. I have scars on my torso that according to this theory would have a high chance of being keloids (none of them are) and two on my hand that shouldn't have turned into scars at all (but they did) and they're hypertrophic for some reason. So I'd keep it in mind but don't stress about it 👍

I've been a doodler my whole life. Gained sentience and the first thing I did was draw LOL

Unfortunately I was raised in a typical Strict(Asian) household and mom wasn't very supportive of my silly hobby... so I don't have any childhood art documented 😭

I do remember filling up all my notebooks and textbooks with sketches though!! My family probably thought I ate all the paper as a kid with how much they had to restock my supplies hahaha

Anyways.

Middleschool (2015 - 2016)

My dad bought me an Ipad Mini 2. Life changing. I never looked back.

I still have it with me, though it's probably super dead at this point, but I remember him saying I could try out digital art with it and I almost burst into tears LMAO Soo it's a sentimental item to me. I'll never get rid of it.

I tried all art programs possible back then, Medibang, Procreate, IbisPaint, Autodesk, etc you name it 😼😼

I was also a finger artist for the longest time, that's why I have endless respect for those who still draw with their fingers digitally. You guys have the patience of a god.

Highschool (2016 - 2018)

Still an Ipad artist, and I was confident enough to post my art on social media. Guess which platform it was ...

It was Wattpad 💀💀💀 i nuked the account because of cringe but I remember getting 100K+ reads on 2 of my books and wow did it do wonders to my ego 😭👍

College (2019)

A life-altering event happened around this time. I was so depressed and stressed out and busy I had no motivation to draw. I bought my first pen tablet but I didn't touch it for months, my Ipad was also left to gather dust.

I did do a little bit of traditional art however!! Was super into inking around this time 😌

COVID (2020 - 2021)

Finally picked up my tablet and purchased Clip Studio Paint!! I'd draw everyday!!! That was because... I joined a fandom that was so cursed it revived my passion for art but also made me never want to have an online presence ever again 💀 (mcyttwt)

I also tried out gouache for the first time!! It was so fun xD

Employed (2021 - now)

Inspiration comes and goes. I only really see drawing as a hobby now, sorta like an escape after spending all my time at work.

HL definitely keeps me inspired though!!! I've been having so much fun experimenting with all the comics and paintings! I love that there's a story to tell behind every artwork I made xD

Okay about the anatomy, I just rewatched kny again and observed Rengoku’s fight styles in that arc. I held a sketchbook while I sat in front of my television. Same for muichiro. I sit and observe their movements and quickly sketch them out. I don’t really use references unless it‘s for colouring. If I didn’t finish my sketch after that specific scene, I’d use my head to finish it up. Now I can draw whimsical characters any time I want cause I do this a lot.

So here’s the thing, I honestly just draw my sketches on my sketchbook then draw the line-art.

PTSD after 1 year of ibis paint on my old Nokia.

But I really like the feel of sketching my work on paper, it just feels nice. I also use a black pen for all my drawings so no do overs. This exercise helped form my lines and I drew a lot of comics and manga when I was little. I only discovered digital art in 2023, and I drew in a Nokia with my fingers😭. Still can btw.

Then I drew all my poses in my sketchbook cause it was easier. Now that habit still exists till this day. It’s just my style of things.

Ragatha is a people pleaser, which means she will do/say almost anything to please others so that there is a clear reason to like/want her around. Is this manipulative? I mean… I guess???? But also being nice to others is literally the least worst thing you could do to someone else??? “Oh but she doesn’t mean it” UM YEAH WHEN SHE TELLS POMNI “oh it’s ok that you left me for dead, twice🥲👍” she did NOT mean that it was ok. But what else was she gonna do? Say “hey wtf why’d you leave me to die?” Ragatha again RAGATHA, would never even consider that as an option because it would cause FRICTION. This is what Goose meant when she said that “Ragatha lies to others to avoid conflict” not that Ragatha lies to others to bend them to her evil will oooh scary~

And for the “she only ever worries about Pomni!” People, ITS BEEN 3 DAYS, POMNI HAS BEEN IN THIS DIGITAL HELL FOR ONLY 3 DAYS. I’m sure before she got there Ragatha worried over the other characters but after Pomni showed up, Ragatha focused all her attention to her since she FUCKIN NEEDS IT CLEARLY

People that dont like Ragatha (depending on their reasoning of course) says a few things to me about themselves, they either;

- don’t understand the pov or even concept of a chronic people pleaser

- lacking a concerning amount of media literacy

- the worst possibility…. both

I’m not saying you can’t hate Ragatha, you can obviously, but at least have the reasoning make sense. I have never before seen such a well written example of “people pleaser that clearly has self worth issues” in my life in any medium, especially in animation.

To those that ADORE Ragatha… I know why. It’s cause you’re probably a people pleaser, or you used to be. You see her way of thinking and go “oof I know that train of thought and it SUCKS” Maybe that’s me projecting cause I’m a people pleaser. To the point that I’ve put myself in literal life threatening situations merely because I didn’t want to be a bother to others. I wanted to be as likable as possible so ya know what I did? Exactly what we see Ragatha doing. And if you think that Ragatha is this awful person then you understand why I’m writing this.

Ah my favorite, royal princess x common lady... well, at least aesthetically... whether or not you're royalty in the real world is debatable... anyways, that aside, I think this is probably one of my favorite ship dynamics... I love.. similar to pomni she is very bad at hiding her feelings around you. Tends to stare with a blushing face. Loves making you dresses; assuming you can swap out dresses considering the whole "their clothes are attatched to their bodies" thing

While I doubt your clothing can rip or tear thanks to the properties of the digital world, I think if she could, she would patch up any holes

Honestly I think out of this entire post, kinger is the only one who gets a platonic/found family take on this... just an old king and his princess kid. End of October Update

There's got to be a less clunky way for me to title these things but maybe I'll figure it out after a few posts.

Anyway at the top of the order I want to say that uh... the Abacelsus zine is not happening by halloween unforch.. I just started school part-time and it being part-time is still kicking my ass! So tentative release date will be on 11th November unless something else happens....

On the plus side I'm done with the cover so all that's left is the back page and cramming all 24 pages full of drawings 👍

I'm still deciding on whether i want to print it A5 or B5 but I'm leaning towards A5, though for the digital release it doesn't really matter lol

As mentioned, I'm done with the main cover so I just need to fill this entire thing with stuff, I said 24 pages but really the total page count is 30. I'm just not counting the cover and the blurb stuff.

I'm half taking a break with this at the risk of burning myself out and half paralysed with starting it. Plus I've kind of been more into Axl & I-no hilariously but I'll always love A.B.A. I think the lack of any real info really lends her well to interpretation which is always fun.

I've never really been one to engage in fandom so I'm probably going to be doing my own thing. That being said if anyone has any suggestions feel free to drop them in my strawpage or ask box :)

Sigh, like I mentioned earlier I'm doing school again! At my big age, but I'm having fun so far! It's part-time but it's still kicking my fucking ass! It's the main reason why I'm a little disoriented this month honestly.

Do you like it? I spent an entire Sunday making my class miro board look niceys and then proceeded to get nauseous from cybersickness afterwards LOL

I'm doing a UI/UX course and I have to say the funnest part about it is making personas, it's like making OCs. Don't particularly like writing though.. but also that's a lie considering the numerous amount of paragraphs in this blog post alone haha

I've also gotten confirmation that I'll be boothing again next year in Febuary! So I gotta start locking into making more stickers and general merch. I say this a lot but I do need to look into opening an online store because I just have tonnes of stickers and stuff lying around waiting till the next time I do a convention which is kind of a shame.

➰Closing Thoughts

All in all, been kind of busy this month with school and various loose threads from September but overall I think I'm doing better! I've also been cooking lately and truthfully that's my biggest achievement this month haha, been also getting really into canned fish. Yummy!

Oh and a last thing is that I've been itching to animate again so I'll end this post with a WIP of a gif I did last night/morning. I almost always never finish my animations but here's hoping this one actually makes it to the colouring stage haha

There's this comic I remember seeing wayyy back in the day (2010-2016ish??) on DeviantArt that I sort of vaguely remember and hope to find again. Granted, I also know a lot of old DA stuff is gone now and it may not be there to find anymore.

So it was a few comics revolving around a human woman who was lost or exploring a rainforest? And there were three or four giant naga men characters that would eat her, the relationships started out antagonistic then became friendship? And the various giant naga guys didn't get along? The art was amateurish and digital, and I'm fairly sure it was all nonsexual soft v0re stuff. That's about all I remember.

Did anyone else see that? Know who the artist was? If they're still around or their stuff is?

He has arrived! The cool vitiligo has also returned! I'm using that for most fusion designs, just so you know. I kind of had trouble figuring out how to combine the clothes. I was a little unsure if the leg warmers would look good with the pants and boots, but everyone I asked said I did a good job and it looks fine, so I trust them all and love how it turned out! As you can see here, I gave him long hair in a ponytail, and drew the back incase you needed to see it better. The hands I might have had trouble, as many artists do, hang in there friends, but I don't think it was too bad, this was a good art day for me. The pose is just- I love it! He's in the middle of flying during a battle! I tried to make the poses for Chaos Steve and Ultra Steve look like they were in the same scene. Now if this was digital I'd add their powers in action too but these are just introductions of what everyone looks like. You'll see all the cool art in the future comic. I apologize in advance, as this will be taking a long time. Once again, be extremely patient please, and thank you for even checking out my designs in the first place! I enjoy doing this! I think my favorite part about this drawing is the cowlicks. That's the pieces of hair that stick out at the top. I gave both Light's and Rainbow's together. I love this because it's cute and adore these two! The brotherly dynamic was sweet and I wish we could've seen more in the OG, lucky for all of us, I HAVE THE POWER! 🪄

Ultra still has that soft gentleness about him but now an added determination and confidence. As far as I've observed from the OG series, Ultra Steve is pretty much what Light Steve would be if he was more sure of himself and used to his capabilities. He drank the first half of the potion so he is Light Steve with Rainbow Steve's powers and the only one in control, since it's just the powers fused. Unlike Dark Steve, Light Steve was not overwhelmed with the urge to destroy everything because of the new strength in these powers, but had a clearer conscience and control. Eventually it did slightly get to him, just not in the same way as Dark, you can find out in the comic or go watch the OG series. Infact, for those of you who did not watch it but found yourself here and interested, if you don't want to wait what will probably be a year or more (😭👍) for the rewrite, you can watch the original Steve Saga while you wait! And then when I'm ready to post the comic, you can see the differences along the way! It is also fine if you don't want spoilers and want to wait for me. I'm having fun designing the characters and rewriting the story, so thank you for your patience and see you in the next post tomorrow!
