here's how it goes:

everyone spends valentine's day in DEEP denial. tubbo isn't dead, he CAN'T be. when they die they come back, that's how it is, how it's ALWAYS been. the island is hell but at least fatalities don't stick, except in specific cases and all of them in the same white shells. of course philza jokes, he's thinking about tubbo, he can't stop. he's expecting tubbo to jump out at any moment, he's expecting to go to fobo and see tubbo hidden in the basement throwing darts at a picture of fit and pac looking at each other, he's expecting to go back to the dungeon and the body is gone (he hopes). tubbo's not dead. he can't die. none of them can, just the eggs.

(it never takes this long to come back; he knows something is wrong)

here's how it goes:

tubbo tells the kids "i'm on my last life." the eggs have always had lives. i don't think some of them have ever understood that the players have infinite chances, with their insistence on protecting their caretakers from deaths like their caretakers do for them, charging back into the eye worker war, refusing to back out of a dangerous dungeon before their parents do, wanting to protect. i don't know if they understand that to the players, death is like spit in the face: unpleasant, sure, but no big deal.

tubbo tells the kids "i'm on my last life" and of course they believe him. death is their constant companion, no more than two doors down. some eggs are used to it being a breath away.

here's how it goes:

tubbo is dead. the children mourn him. the players are scared. defiant. they always are. who among them has died? dan, missing; spreen, gone; maximus... well there was no body, no announcement, surely-

(how long did it take pierre to accept it? to realize it? to take down the missing person posters? not a day. not a day.)

juanaflippa died and there was a court case to save her. bobby died and the whole server journeyed to save him. when is the last time the players have taken death lying down?

here's how it goes:

tubbo dies, and he dies unloved (fit's arm is stretched out to save him). he dies without purpose (sunny is there, she's waiting, she knows he won't move). he dies and no one cares (chayanne refuses to leave, his godfather, he failed his-)

the valentine's party is so loud but too quiet. there's a name in the air, even when no one is saying it

"wow sure is good tubbo isn't here" phil says (he's said this before, he'll say it again, but isn't it strange how many times? perhaps even he doesn't believe it. perhaps he's trying to convince himself.)

thanks for answering all my questions, I love hearing you elaborate on the details which does bring me to my follow up question, how are the jobs like in Slob City? I imagine that the deadlines are really slack or just don't exist. That and those too lazy to work or just prefer to be NEETs are supported somehow?

I'm going to be honest, I haven't put thought into this solely because I think it would not be possible for the economy of the city to sustain itself if nobody at all is really working and so it just exists in a vague state of 'it works somehow' and I don't question it.

I assume they have really good welfare so people don't necessarily need to work. I feel like the unemployment rate is really high.

A lot of jobs we'd consider essential (e.g. waste management) just aren't performed and others (e.g. electricity production) are done outside of the city. I guess when you think about it, what sort of jobs would need to be done? Other than restaurants, supermarkets, government stuff, real estate/construction and other retail stuff, there probably wouldn't be a whole lot of things. So as long as some people are employed so that the government gets taxes and the retailers get money to buy more stock, people can do whatever job they want, even if it's 'unproductive' by our standards.

But for people who do work, there are literally no expectations or whatever. It's impressive enough that you showed up to work. if anything, people who work hard are looked down on or mocked because they could be spending their time trying to minimise the effort they need to complete the job to a barely acceptable standard. Below standard is already too high. there's no desire to climb the career ladder (except if it leads to a cushier job), so people only want enough money to buy food and stuff. Not having to work is the dream and so people who get to lounge around at home all day are envied.

I don't know, maybe the city is right next to huge oil reserves and just gets money off of that or something, so no one needs to pay taxes. The point is, there's no pressure to work if you don't want to.

I assume there are schools as well and the same sort of principles apply in that like a real world C is the equivalent of their A+.

Hiiiiii! I just want you to know that as a fellow day defender, I totally agree with you about your opinion of night and day’s situation. People keep saying that day is a bad guy since he treated night like that without knowing the reason behind it. I read the novel btw and thought that if I’m in day’s shoes, I’d probably be acting the same way as day. He just needs time to heal and I totally understand that. I hope people can consider day’s feelings too, not just night’s.

first of all, i wanted to thank you for not giving away any spoilers even if you've already read the novel!!!!! i don't take that for granted because not everyone is so considerate, so i really appreciate it!!!!!

about night and day's situation, im so incredibly glad that you agree with my thoughts on it!!!!! maybe it's because i feel very protective of day as a character, but it's been pretty hard to see him bear the brunt of people's criticism, first with the whole mork vs august affair and now with night. i know it's natural to sympathize with night because we don't have an explanation for day's behavior yet, and regardless of what happened it will never be an excuse for lashing out like that, but at the same time it's kinda upsetting to have day's feelings being constantly dismissed. like being in night's presence makes day feel SO BAD that one time he was literally willing to step in the middle of the street without being able to see rather than staying in the same space as night, and another time he was ready to give up attending aon's wedding (which he really cares about) and would have gone back to isolate himself from the world if it wasn't for mork, and i just think this should be taken into account a little bit more

i also think it's not a matter of who's right or who's wrong, because unlike what night said there are actually no villains and no heroes here. the narrative isn't pushing the audience to side with a character or another, on the contrary it's trying to make the viewers understand both points of view: night's attempts to be a good brother and reconnect with day are commendable and it's indeed both very sad and very frustrating to see day constantly reject them so cruelly, but day has only now started to accept his disability after an entire year of isolation where he was made feel like he could no longer take care of himself and live a fulfilling life, and like you said i think he should be allowed the time to heal (and eventually to forgive night, if he is actually involved in the accident that made day lose his sight)

in the end they're both just two boys with a lot of misunderstandings and unspoken feelings between them who are trying to do their best and i think it's unfair to pit them against each other

After a ton of grinding, basically memorizing Shiro's patrol dialogue from endless patrols,and real life getting in the way of me guarding the galaxy...I finally activated all of the Iron Lord artifacts. I am free. Shiro, I love ya buddy, but it's going to be a HOT (flaming axe pun intended) minute before I step into the Plaguelands again...at least to do a patrol. Archon Forge is fun.
