guys the shard of connection between dazai, atsushi and akutagawa is eating away at me, NEEDS to be examined.

can i just say. his relationship with dazai, where he had idolized him and festered something completely dependant on dazai's response to him.

vs. (or really it never clashes, more like, through his recognition of a world larger than dazai, he loses more and more of his hold on akutagawa)

aku's relationship with atsushi, where he rages at dazai's remarks about him and yet continues to seep in the light he (atsushi) brings IN RESPONSE TO DAZAI

like. akutagawa, who has come to understand strength as something earnt, where strength = purpose. as we are shown with his entire 'mad dog' persona, which, ultimately becomes his way of living. then atsushi comes along, blah blah blah, we've heard this beforee, challenging his position means challenging his purpose, his life. but through a disturbance of the curtains, there is a sliver of light. likeeeeeee. FUCK. my point being, the shell is cracking, and akutagawa's first death (hurry up and go, you fool; like shut up?? /j) is the catalyst where the shell splits open.

yes, now. take this and put it thru half a dozen regenerations which PHYSICALLY (and mentally) shake up his being. he is left with a sponge of a mind which takes in Everything he has known but shunned. yet it's akutagawa so of course the screaming elephant in the back of his mind is the fact that he is no longer looking for dazai in everything he does. and without his other pains, the failure to please dazai... his deteriorating lungs.... his anger as a coping mechanism, through clear eyes (literally) he can see himself in the light (with atsushi). id like to this is literally IS him thinking for himself for once. instead of doing something for the sake of the mafia/dazai or in the process of justifying his worldview.

this, my friends, is MY catalyst and i am abt to go batshit insane because of an anime twink🙏

it is just so interesting to me how bsd makes a trend of another charact acting as a symbol of enlightenment (or general character progression) within the confines of someone's mind (form few recent chapters: the director/dazai for atsushi, atsushi for aku, etc)

Summary:

Buck is forced to go on a temporary medical leave after getting crushed by a flight of stairs. In the meantime, he works at dispatch while he recovers. One evening after work, Buck hooks up with a mysterious, hot, family oriented DILF. The following morning he’s mortified and a little love sick after discovering said hook-up aka Eddie Diaz is the newest (temporary) firefighter liaison--poached from a house in El Paso, Texas. Buck navigates becoming best friends and eventually work partners with his ex-hookup. In the meantime, he desperately tries not to fall in love. He fails.

They felt more like family than his own ever had growing up. In such a short amount of time they’d come to know each other so deeply, they've already been through so much—especially after Chimney had his incident with the wreck and the rebar. He was barely back from his own medical leave before Buck had his own incident.

Although Bobby nagged him for weeks, Buck opted for a tiny graduation celebration. At the time, he hadn’t known how to explain to Bobby that there was no one outside of his tiny circle of friends to invite. Now Athena knows though, and he needs to make a mental note to ask if she could keep their conversation between the two of them. He doesn’t want to change the way his friends see him, and he doesn't want pity. He’s worried this new information might be a little too on the nose.

“What’s new with you, Buckley?” Chimney calls across the room, smiling and waving. “How you healing up?” Buck slides into a seat at the dining table, and Bobby, Chim, and Hen turn their full attention onto him.

“I’m healing alright. They’ve still got me on track for a return after six months. I’ll be able to walk without the crutch before too long, my ribs should be healed in a couple of weeks. Then I’ll just have PT to contend with, because of the leg strain and the fracture, my trainer says it might be tenuous, so I have that to look forward to at least.”

“It’ll be here in no time,” Chimney promised. “You just need to get a hobby. You’re lacking in those. Maybe I could make you a list of movies, you’re tragically behind on pop culture.”

“Actually, I've accepted a temporary position at dispatch,” Buck admits. Bobby beams, and Buck barely restrains a groan.

“Yes, I finally caved.” Buck tells him, although he didn’t ask. “Athena took me to visit today.”

It was so surprising and disarming that he was shocked into stillness and it gave Houji’s comrades enough time to catch up and defend him. But having Learned Something About Himself, the minute Kousuke was cleared to leave he decided to track down tatara off the clock and just observe him, or talk to him, to figure out why that did it for him because more than he’s concerned with killing ghouls, he’s concerned with his image. Being a somewhat public figure in an old fashioned institution, being gay is bad enough for his reputation, but being into a ghoul is so much worse

He did manage to track Tatara down to an abandoned building, and while armed with his q-bullet pistol, he was clearly not sent ready to take down a kakuja and when Tatara confronted him, he was very weirdly examining him and told him he just wants to talk, obviously having not planned this well. But one thing (tatara pinning him to a wall by his throat) led to another (Houji biting his hand) and the next thing they knew Tatara was rushing out of the building, horribly ashamed that he left Kousuke alive and desperate to not think about what he just did. Houji was alive, a few broken ribs, an open wound on his belly, and blood on his thighs aside, he was alive. Their first time landed him in the hospital, but only after he dragged himself home to clean up the evidence of what really happened so he could claim he was just mugged. But it haunted him. Not because the violent, bloody sex with that creature that wanted him dead hurt him, but because it was good. Because none of the times he’d forced himself to sleep with a woman for his image, not even any of the times he met up with a man somewhere hidden away, compared to how good it was with that monster

Tatara wasn’t doing much better either because he learned that not only would he let his sworn enemy live for no other reason than sexual gratification, but that he was going to do it again. And he did. Next time they fought, he dragged him off, and it seems they both expected this. He told himself that he couldn’t kill him yet because he hasn’t debased him enough, hasn’t ruined him enough, that he’ll do it once he’s fucked him in all the most disgusting ways possible and then he’ll kill him. And that did it for him, he didn’t like other ghouls being close with him, and that made sex difficult when he found himself wanting it, but with something weak enough to never threaten him and hated enough that he can enjoy causing needless harm, he was perfect

It became routine. They’d meet in battle, they’d shoot and stab and bite and slash just like they would when trying to kill one another, sometimes they really were trying to kill one another, but they’d pull that one punch, they’d hesitate on that final blow, and then the winner would drag the loser away to fuck like animals, then Tatara would leave. But it changed. Houji found himself slipping the number of his burner phone to Tatara after one of their hookups, Tatara found himself calling it from a victim’s phone, Houji would tell him a time and place. They’d meet up at a shady motel, but by now, they can’t just fuck. They need to fight first, and spilled a lot of blood on those dirty carpets

Tatara mostly topped at first. It’s not a preference, it’s a power trip. Because Houji was used to topping and Tatara knows humans have ideas about this being a power thing, and he wanted to hurt him. Houji, used to exerting power over human partners this way, allowed it (or rather, he was pinned by tatara very easily). There was a slow shift in how it went. At first he’s be lucky if Tatara bothered to use lube instead of spit or blood, but he started being better about it, he’d never admit it but he was making it more easy for him, and eventually during one of their violent forplay sessions, Tatara clearly let himself be pinned this time. They switch more often now, but only because Tatara feels more comfortable with him, and knows that Houji knows he only bottoms because he allows it

It turns out, once you pass the point of unspeakable violence and sexual depravity, it gets easily for one to indulge fetishes. They don’t exactly ask about it, they just break them out. Houji didn’t ask Tatara if he’s okay with wearing handcuffs, he just brought quinque steel cuffs from work and shackled him when his guard was down. Tatara did ask Houji if he was okay with being choked, he just started choking him. Their boundaries are fucked

When Houji found out what ghoul heats are, he would not stop pestering Tatara about it. The idea of him weak and helpless and horny is hot, but the knowledge that he is deeply opposed to being seen that way is hotter. It was only after a couple years of their weird hook ups that Tatara allowed it. His heats are bad. Between being a subspecies with weird temperature regulation and a kakuja, his heats are agonizing and he is truly helpless, and to be honest, caving and letting Houji fuck him through it was a low point of desperation. Kousuke had planned to be awful as always, to kick him while he was down and hurt him while he can’t fight back, but when he arrived he found Tatara truly terrified. He’s seen him angry, and he’s seen him regretful, but he hasn’t seen him afraid. But Tatara was weak, he knew he was vulnerable, and he was too overwhelmed to mask that he was afraid of what Kousuke would do to him like this. And just that once, Houji cracked, and was careful with him. He was not nice, that’s different, he was just careful, making sure not to dig his fingers too deep in his kakuhou and not hitting him like he usually would, and that was the first time they didn’t immediately part ways once they were done with each other. Houji stayed with him for the few days he was going through it, he even brought him water and got him into bath and barely mocked him for accepting the help. They didn’t talk about that again, but Tatara started calling him for his heats and the CCG had no reason to be suspicious that Houji called off every six months

They didn’t exactly see each other as people. To tatara, Kousuke is a cog in a machine that must be destroyed. To Kousuke, Tatara is an animal in human skin. It made it easy to hurt each other, or do things in bed with each other, that they wouldn’t want a person to know about. The Moral Implications of having sex with something that isn’t a person aside (something Houji was a little worried about but refused to think about), it made it easier. It’s one thing to admit a horrible dark thing to a person, it’s another to admit a horrible dark thing to an animal that’s going to die soon. So Houji let Tatara know that he enjoyed violent sex to the point of broken bones and internal bleeding and got off on being degraded for his preferences and body, things that he would rather die then let anyone know he was ashamed of. And Tatara let Houji know that he enjoyed fingers in his kakuhou and eye contact during sex, something that to a ghoul as powerful and dangerous as him, is an extremely debasing and vulnerable thing. By now, seeing each other as people is horrifying. Because that means another person knows these things about them, so the obvious solution is to never stop dehumanizing each other

Future Mephisto fanfics:

Working on a fanfic that I consider the ultimate betrayal because Amiya and Mephisto aren’t completely awful to each other in it. If you don’t know, I derive great amusement from their dynamic as enemies. Normal people AU but I can’t ever stop myself from writing Mephisto as annoying and mean because he is too emotionally immature and lacking in morals to just play nice. At this point every character I write acting rude and self centered to each other just happens on its own.

As for fanfics where they are just awful to each other, I feel kinda bad for abandoning my long fic and I will come back to it after finishing the above one. It was made when I was starting to write fanfics and I didn’t know how to tell the story I envisioned. So it became impossible to continue as it was. I have most of a new chapter hidden away, but I honestly want to restructure the whole thing and tell a tighter story.

Cassmire: The Loyal Sword

This Manhwa is one of my personal favorites, with a story about Cassmire, the lead, risking her life becoming a mercenary to get the medicine her younger sister, Aria, needs to live. Through an accident where she hit her head Cassmire she regains memories of her past life and a story where her sister is the lead character. Though she used to be the villainess in the og story she sticks with her sister and will do anything to help her. Past this point I will be talking about spoilers and specifics of the story so you are warned.

From here I will be breaking down the story in 3 main categorizes and just talking about things I really want to touch on overall.

Firstly the art: 10/10: I dont care that some of the costume choices are interesting, I've heard a lot of people complain about BDSM wear but it honestly isnt that bad. No, the reason this gets a 10/10 is Cassmires design, like she has muscles are scars and looks hot as fuck like look at her.

I am gay and love muscle women and it is very lacking in this genre so it is really good to see. And she is also very cute on top of it. But overall the art is good to look at and has amazing character design for all of the cast as well.

Story 8/10: This one is hard to quantify as we still haven't really gotten into the meat of the story. There some talk about things that happen later in the story like how in the og story Aria saves the world we haven't gotten into anything that bad yet. Though that might make it seem slow it really isn't, the story has more been focused on character moments and while things go off the rails it doesn't seem to be world ending yet. I have quite enjoyed the most recent aspects of the story, it is good to see both the main characters flaws and her strength all in the couple chapters.

Characters 8/10: This was the hardest one for me to choose a rating for as I love Cassmire she is one of my favorite protags, she has so many good moments and has and sticks to her morals to help people. My only issue is how they weaken her by making her overly reliant on her aura but even that makes sense. And her relationship with her family is just so good to see. I love how ruthless her sister is in defending her and how her brother cares about her and how they fight like real siblings. And how her dad cares about all his kids in his own way and just wants to support and help her and it just so sweet and they all care about each other so much and that's the shit I love to see I love a good family dynamic. The reason this is an 8/10 and not a 10/10 is because of all the ml's. They are all kinda mid it is just the same troupe over and over again and I get it shes kind she saves people but 4 dudes and they are all the ml's from the og story. And I dislike all the hair color changes it doesn't make sense also they are boring. Also none of the leads have good chemistry with Cassmire, they are all cowards who won't talk to her about what they are feeling. I hate them all have open secrets and not talk with each other, but this is a me thing I know I have seen people like these ml she doesn't really seem to have chemistry with any of them. This story would get a 10/10 if she ends up with no one and just lives happily with her family but it probably just me who thanks this.

With all these combined this overall story is a 9/10, a beautiful story with an amazing main character and her family but the weak ml's stop this story from being a true 10/10. Thank you for reading my unedited review have a great day.

This isn’t gonna be cohesive cuz my brain doesn’t work like that anymore and also it’s 1am and I’m typing this on a shitty ipad so. Literally don’t expect anything from me.

In regards to TBOSAS: it is disappointing to see so many people seemingly missing the point or, worse, outright ignoring it to babygirl-ify Snow. I know this is the villain / morally gray / monstrosity appreciation website and I’ll partake of that myself every so often. I also think the movie dulled down some of his actions and made it murkier/harder to tell just how manipulative/conniving/self-serving he was being the entire time. But this is a character who knowingly makes choices that, over time, lead to the deaths of nearly 1500 children + the people in the Districts who suffer and die under his oppression. We all know this going into it.

The story is not meant to be a redemption for Snow, nor is it blaming Lucy Gray for how he turns out. The book at least is very explicit that every choice he made was made willingly in a pursuit of power. It is his own warped view of the world and his inability to trust that turns to paranoia and then turns him against Lucy Gray. It is that pursuit of power that leads to him betraying Sejanus, and it can be argued that his inability to trust ALSO plays a part in that.

The romanticizing of his behaviors regarding Lucy Gray are also kinda sickening. He’s not sexy for saying it’d be best for Lucy Gray to be held in a cage in the Capitol so he can keep an eye on her. That wasn’t meant to be romantic. Him constantly referring to her as “My [Lucy]/Mine” is not romantic. Him lying awake at night thinking about her is, again, not romantic. Collins is demonstrating his obsessive tendencies that she outright tells you about in the first goddamn chapter of the book. They’re not #goals, he tries (and perhaps succeeds, depending on your interpretation of it, although if you think they’re #goals, I don’t trust your interpretation of anything) to kill her. Again, I realize this is the toxic relationship website. But I just really don’t think you can respect Lucy Gray’s character OR the story that is being told if all you can take away from it is “Young Snow Hot 🥵”

There’s so much more I could say about the ignoring Sejanus’ entire character arc to make jokes abt Snow being soooo gay for him (during a scene in which he has ALREADY sealed Sejanus’ fate, willingly and knowingly), amongst other things, but I’m tired and I’ve already written more than I intended to. It’s just exhausting to see a story with such potential for discussion and character examination be boiled down to “white boy hot, Lucy Gray is just my vehicle for romantic and sexual fantasy with hot white boy, Sejanus is also that but for gay boy instead. What do you mean there are other characters in this story.” Ohhhh it makes me sick. Whatever tho.

A lot of the comics I read are less self-indulgent/wish-fulfillment/slice of life/romance and more "make me ponder about the thing I am reading on an obsessive level" and "I want this story to rewrite my life and make me question everything". However if I'm needing a mental break I will enjoy a good comfort comic!

WARNING BEFOREHAND: Some of the listed comics may include themes like slight body horror, suicide/self-harm, abuse, depression, etc. There are pre-existing warnings on most of these comics but like all media please proceed with caution and take care of yourselves!

On WEBTOON:

Space Boy by Stephen McCranie (currently on hiatus)

Do you love space? Do you enjoy colorful comics with intriguing casts of characters with a dash of existentialism and the complexities of life and what it means to be human? Then you'll definitely want to read this one. Also, it baffles me that Stephen has essentially improvised the majority of this story--it's incredibly cohesive and very well-written.

Nevermore by Kate Flynn and Kit Trace (updates regularly on Fridays)

This is the definition of disaster lesbians--toxic yuri, even, but that's why I love it! Very fun concept of limbo as a gothic academic setting where everyone is out to get everyone for a second chance at life. The main love interests have a recently-divorced vibe that is so messy and I eat it up every time they interact with each other. The supporting cast is also very fleshed-out and dynamic and play very well off of each other to make for interesting scenarios.

Suitor Armor by Purpah (updates on Fridays)

A comic that questions what it means to be human/have a soul and the complexities of life and the moral ambiguity! I feel like there's a pattern here... anyway, I really enjoy the world-building in this one and while I'm not usually a fan of plot-twists for shock value, Purpah does them VERY WELL and I was indeed very shocked and surprised several times.

Castle Swimmer by Wendy Lian Martin (currently on hiatus)

I do love my gay fish boys. Castle Swimmer is one of those comics I could picture as an animated series and if that happens I want to be on that animation team so bad (Wendy I'm on my hands and knees). The world building is immaculate and feels so vast that every time a new setting is discovered it feels like the world map is being filled out as you go. Main characters defy predestined-fates after falling in love with each other and I'm a sucker for that trope. Gender-fuckery and many representations of sexuality is also a normal occurrence so that's very refreshing. AND Wendy incorporates a lot of facts/biology/conservation awareness for marine life into the story and after episodes and I love that very much.

On Hiveworks:

Novae by KaiJu (Jen and Kate) (updates on Mondays and Thursdays)

Historical fiction with romance, more gender-fuckery, magic systems and astronomy (more space!! I love space!!). I eat up all the cultural references and have learned more from this comic than most of my history classes. Beautiful, beautiful art style and overall very well-written. Cant' wait to get my heart broken over the next few chapters (something just happened but you'll have to read it for yourself).

Tiger, Tiger by Petra Norlund (currently on hiatus)

My friend recommended this to me with the general pitch of "noblewoman cross-dresses as her twin brother to escape the responsibilities of high society and study sea sponges aboard the stolen ship of said-brother" and let me tell you I wish I read it sooner. I need to re-read it at some point but from what I can recall there's also a lot of queer pining and will-they-won't-they but also we can't worry about that right now because world-ending things are happening and one of the world-ending things is very hot and cool.

Barbarous by Ananth Hirsh and Yuko Ota (currently on hiatus)

I recently discovered this comic but I devoured it within hours; not only is the magic portrayed in such an interesting way (literally weaving magic/needing physical conduits to cast spells) despite being in a modern setting. Percy/Chiaki hits home being down on her luck and how her desperation to be perfect and powerful has made her do questionable things and I love that for her. All the characters are messy in their own way and it really breathes life into what could be considered a slice-of-life.

Namesake by Megan Lavey-Heaton and Isabelle Melançon (I'm actually unsure if there's a consistent update schedule?)

Man how do I even begin to explain Namesake?? I can't, that's why you should read it for yourself. Get ready to take notes because it is so dense with magical systems, character and setting history that I felt like I was studying but it's fun studying. This is also one I've followed for yeeearrrs and it's just gotten better with time.

Countdown to Countdown by Velinxi/Xiao Tong Kong (updates on Wednesdays)

This is actually a re-release of Xiao's previous comic by the same name; it had a similar format to Ava's Demon with painterly single panels (you can still read the original here), and now it's a paginated-format with a very fleshed-out story and world (and the art style slightly simplified but still gorgeous). I love the changes Xiao was able to make because it really helps the story and characters shine compared to the earlier version. I'm pretty sure that she had likened it to Tangled such as: generational trauma, escaping a tower, MC discovering the world while love interest grows to love their passion and joy despite struggling in said-world and they are both boys and they are kissing (I added that last bit it has been the slowest slow burn of my life).

Daughter of the Lilies by Meg Syv (currently on hiatus)

High fantasy/Dungeons and Dragons setting with incomprehensible beings and a girl without a face that just wants to be accepted by the family she has found within her adventuring party. I adore the character interactions and I don't want to say too much about the world because of very cool spoilers, but I really love this one.

STANDALONE COMICS:

Ava's Demon by Michelle Fus (updates fairly regularly now? but can have some hiatuses)

One of those OG webcomics I've been read since forever ago, but I still love it and am excited to see where the story goes. Sci-fi fantasy setting where most of the inhabited planets have been overruled by this one asshole who might be a god? Either way it follows Ava and a rag-tag group of friends/enemies/frenemies as they try to battle Titan's rule with demon pacts and untapped, unknown powers. I haven't re-read it in a very long time but I do remember enjoying the story and characters and the art style is absolutely gorgeous.

Lackadaisy by Tracy J. Butler

Oh my god please read this comic if you haven't already (or watch some of it as it's now an animated pilot on YouTube and has been recently funded for a full season!) I'm a complete sucker for 1920s/1930s prohibition stories and the underground businesses of rumrunners, not to mention the added bonus that they're all cats! The art style is gorgeous both in the earlier chapters and the later chapters, and the writing is so incredibly well-constructed and intricate that my baby brain could hardly keep up when I first started readying back in uhhhh 2010/2012?). It has a wackiness and charisma that Tracy has only honed since first starting and I can't recommend it enough.

The Meek and Mare Internum by Der-shing Helmer (The Meek is on indefinite hiatus, and Mare Internum is completed)

I honestly don't know if The Meek will ever be finished? Which is a bummer because I was hooked from the start. Granted I haven't revisited it in a long time so I can't recall a lot of details, but I remember it being wonderfully rich in world building and all of the characters were complex and shared interesting dynamics with each other. Fantasy setting with dangerous god-like beings playing sandbox with the politics and fates of the human world. There is also most definitely a green-haired girl in the story and she's really cool. Again, my memory is a tad fuzzy on this one so current opinion could be different from previous opinion.

Mare Internum is fully completed and is a sci-fi story that explored the dangers of an alien-inhabited Mars with a reluctant main lead. Proceed with caution as the very first page depicts an attempted hanging by the main character (there are warnings but it is the first page so it can take you a bit off-guard). I actually just realized as I was writing this that I never finished the story and that's very silly and goofy of me, but that just means we can experience it together haha.

Off-White by Jessi Derenthal, Anna Podedworna and Katarzyna Redesiuk (unfortunately discontinued, but who know what will happen in the future?)

I have to recommend the comic that indulged my wolf-girl era, it's only fair. But it's also because it's a beautifully painted comic and the team is so talented. I haven't caught up with them recently but I hope they're all doing well wherever they are. The setting is heavily inspired by Norse mythos, and the main characters flip between humans and wolves struggling to survive the spiritual collapse of the world as humans wipe out each respective spirit for total power. I remember being absolutely entranced by this comic and would get so excited every time it updated so my friend and I could read it. It's currently available on the Internet Archives and Wayback Machine, as the site was too expensive for the creators to sustain.
