Ask game!
15. bonus option for hobbies
I have a small TUI application i have written for managing some info for me when GM'ing. Right now it's just for D&D but plan on expanding it once i get to DM some other system where i require a convenience tool. I would also like to look into software to manage my math books and articles.
17. email
Currently i use my browser, but it is another one of those things i want to change at some point. I have previously experiment with getting my uni mail into thunderbird but did not succeed.
23. any miscellaneous tool you can't live without
Hmmm, i guess the best thing fitting this description is a small bash script i have for auto-compiling latex files on changes and another for managing, opening and creating latex projects for me. It's a very simple setup but i makes my workflow so much better.
24. unrelated to the other questions what's the name of the plushie that's nearest to you rn Hmmm, that is hard to gauge. I have two plushies in my bed at approximately the same distance from me. The first being my polar bear Ice. Back when i got it 6 year old me had to ask my parents what the english word for "is"(danish word for ice) was. The other is of course my blåhaj Clyde. So the name: Blåhaj -> Haj -> Hej -> Bonjour -> Bonnie -> Clyde. Haj is the danish word for shark and sounds the same as "hej" which means hello. Bonjour is hello in french and Bonnie is a nickname that evolved from bonjour.
Thank you so much for the ask Anon <3
(And love to @debian-official for making this delightful ask game)

1. base distro
my main desktop is artix linux; my laptop is void linux; my server is alpine linux (plus some VMs i use for development)
i am not actually the biggest systemd hater i just happen to not use it lol. i actually tried to use debian on my server at first but i couldn't get it to work with my hosting service's network for some reason, but with alpine if i did manual network setup during install it would Just Work. perhaps i can blame systemd for this
3. listening to music
i run a local mpd server and use ncmpcpp as a client, with my music library synced with syncthing. however i'm thinking i should move my music library to my server and stream from there bc my music library is taking up a shit ton of space on my phone and laptop both of which have limited storage (laptop storage is soldered on i think, and i don't think my phone storage is upgradeable either, but tbf i should double check those—in any case even if it were upgradeable that would cost Money and i shrimply don't think a massive music library synced between 3 devices is the wisest use of limited storage). so i may need to look into self-hosted music streaming solutions. although it is nice to be able to listen to music without using mobile data when i'm out and about.
19. file sync/sharing
a bit all over the place. as i said above i use syncthing for a few things but i'm increasingly moving away from that towards my nextcloud just bc if i'm syncing eg a 10GB file, there's no need for it to take up 30GB between 3 devices when i can just have it take up 10GB once on a remote server that i can access from any device only when it's needed. i am still sticking with syncthing for some things that are more sensitive so i want to reduce the number of devices it goes through: ie my keepass db, and some luks headers i have stored. also currently using a bit of a mess between syncthing and git hosting for my dotfiles but i'm trying to migrate to one chezmoi git repo since that can handle differences between devices and is much more elegant than my current glued-together scripts and git repos lol
for file sharing it's a bit all over the place. onionshare or bittorrent for some things, my own nextcloud for personal file sharing with people who can't wrap their heads around onionshare or bittorrent and just want a web browser link. i also use disroot's nextcloud instance for when i need to do the latter but not have it tied to me in any way. also sometimes i just send attachments in whatever platform we're using to communicate like just a signal attachment or something.

hi I have a question thats kind of general in terms of gaming. Mastering mechanics or maxing some if not all aspects of certain games is pretty enjoyable to me and obviously I appreciate that about some of the stuff you do, my question is on whether you think mastery most readily comes from actually using guides and online references or people who just do and explore every crevice of everything themselves. I had like a two hour convo with a friend but she couldnt really figure out an answer!
aw i appreciate it lol
tbh i don’t think i can say either way though because… i think both are required, usually? it does also depend on the game some i think, but like, for example i literally only play pokemon pretty much, and it would be ludicrous to re-document everything about pokemon myself, figure out everything about pokemon myself. sites like bulbapedia exist for a reason. that would essentially require the ability to read assembly and do software decomp to be considered a “master” of the game or a mechanic in it, which i just don’t think is reasonable! and knowing how to efficiently find & understand information about niche mechanics online is part of the skill, i think
that being said, reading guides online cannot replace hands-on experience and self-research. obviously if you want to master something you have to actually do it and that’s no different with video games. i think generally if you are really experienced with a game and playing it enough to be considered in some way a “master” of it you will naturally learn more about it or discover new things about it by playing it, including stuff which may not even be easily reference-able online
this ask makes me think of speedrunning and how popular speedgames have community resources and guides, but then when someone gets really acquainted with a speedrun, they may discover new routes or glitches on their own. this is basically how i feel about the topic in general including outside of speedrunning lol

40 for the ask game
40. what’s the most interesting item you own?
hmmmmmmmm……
Ooh! Not sure if this is a good answer, but in college when I bought the cheapest used copy of the famous Go4 Design Patterns textbook I could find, I was surprised to find that it had been signed by 3 of the 4 authors!
Tumblr media
just needs Erich Gamma to complete the set!

@perl-official
spotify and occasionally apple music 😔 I'll move away from streaming eventually, but for right now I'm not paying for it (family plan) and all my playlists are there soooo
uhhh I discovered LSP recently and that NeoVim has builtin support that just needs to be activated in the config and that has saved me SO MUCH TIME as I relearn the bits of Python that I've forgotten
there's not a 27 on the list so I'll answer 7 and 17
GrapheneOS, love it, it had some growing pains in the early days but now it's rock-stable, ridiculously secure, and sandboxed Google Play is literally better than MicroG
Hosting is a mix, I have some institutional accounts that I have to deal with that are MS and Google, I have some Gmail accounts of my own because who can live without a google account these days, but my primary personal emails are all hosted on Zoho. I use Thunderbird for my desktop client and FairEmail on android right now, but I've been meaning to check out the new Android Thunderbird version

Feel like you would really like the game ruiner, it's like a sick twin stick shooter with music, graphics, and a storyline that severely fucks. I think it's less than ten dollars too
Thankyou for the recommendation :)

Hello oni lore fans, I have been fighting for my life to solve a lil mystery and I decided to finally clean up one of the logs I copy and pasted from the code so I can hopefully find someone else who's seen it in game before. It's called "a seed is planted" and I'm pretty sure it was in the research notes section, but in the code it's placed alongside the story trait logs so I'm not 100% confident where it's supposed to be found. I first saw it in a save that I was using sandbox mode to hunt for lore with, and it stuck around for a lil while before disappearing, and then it randomly came back for a lil bit before all my lore logs got wiped with the recent update. I have no idea how I got it in the first place nor what made it disappear and come back, so I'm basically just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with this particular log (or any logs for that matter)
I have copy and pasted the log under the cut, although the formatting might be a bit off as this was cleaned up from a copy paste directly from the code itself
"A Seed is Planted"
[Voice Recognition Initialized]
[Subject Identified: B040]
[LOG BEGINS]
Three days ago, we completed our first non-fatal Duplicant trial of Nikola's comprehensive synapse microanalysis and mirroring process. Five hours from now, Subject #901 will make history as our first human test subject.
Even at the Vertex Institute, which is twice Gravitas's size, I could've spent half my career waiting for approval to advance to human trials for such an invasive process! But Director Stern is too invested in this work to let it stagnate.
My darling Bruce always said that when you're on the right path, the universe conspires to help you. He'd be so proud of the work we do here.
[LOG ENDS]
[LOG BEGINS]
My bio-printed multi-cerebral storage chambers (or "mega minds" as I've been calling them) are working! Just in time to save my job.
The Director's been getting increasingly impatient about our struggle to maintain the integrity of our growing datasets during extraction and processing. The other day, she held my report over a Bunsen burner until the flames reached her fingertips.
I can only imagine how much stress she's under.
The whole world is counting on us.
[LOG ENDS]
[LOG BEGINS]
On a hunch, I added dream content analysis to the data and...wow. Oneirology may be scientifically "fluffy", but integrating subconscious narratives has produced a new type of brainmap - one with more latent potential for complex processing.
If these results are replicable, we might be on the verge of unlocking the secret to creating synthetic life forms with the capacity to evolve beyond blindly following commands.
Nikola says that's irrelevant for our purposes. Surely Director Stern would disagree.
[LOG ENDS]
[LOG BEGINS]
Nikola gave me a dataset to plug into the mega minds. He wouldn't say where it came from, but even if he had...nothing could have prepared me for what it contained.
When he saw my face, he muttered something about how people should call me "Tremors," not "Nails" and sent me on my lunch break.
All I could think about was those poor souls.
Did they have souls?
...do we?
[LOG ENDS]
[LOG BEGINS]
It's done. My adjustments to the memory transfer protocol are hardcoded into the machine.
I finished just as Nikola stormed in.
I may be too much of a coward to stand up for those unfortunate creatures, but with these new parameters in place...someday, they might be able to stand up for themselves.
[LOG ENDS]
