Beyond the Box: Exploring the Advantages of Buying Software Online

The days of walking to the local electronics store and sifting through aisles of boxed software are fading. While the ritual of browsing those colorful packages may stir nostalgia, the rise of digital downloads provides software shoppers with convenience and savings that physical products can't match.
As with most transitions, change doesn't come without questions. Is downloading software really better than having a tangible disc? Are there risks to only owning virtual copies? While adapting to new ways can be challenging, examining the benefits of buying software online paints a convincing case for leaving the box behind.
- Freedom from Physical Limits
No need to wait for stores to open or stand in long checkout lines. The internet never closes, and digital shoppers can buy software online anytime. Geographic restrictions disappear in the cloud, freeing customers to access programs restricted to overseas vendors.
And there's no fighting for parking spaces or wrestling with heavy boxes. Online buying allows software shopping from the comfort of pajamas. The old hunt to track down niche titles in cluttered stores is replaced by effortless searches across global marketplaces.
- Discounted Prices
Online stores bypass the overhead costs of retail space and sales staff. Those savings get passed to customers through reduced prices. While physical stores can deeply discount aging inventory, digital sellers regularly offer lower prices on new releases and popular titles.
Subscription plans provide additional savings by bundling programs together. Many options allow access to multiple apps through affordable monthly fees. For impulsive shoppers lured in by bargain bins, online dealers frequently host seasonal sales rivaling the best in-store blowouts.
- Instant Access and Updates
The immediacy of digital distribution sets it apart from physical purchasing. Boxes must be shipped and unpacked before use, while downloads unlock software within minutes. Lengthy installation processes are decreasing, too, as web-based apps remove desktop clutter completely.
The same connectivity enables quick delivery and also keeps programs automatically updated. Developers can instantly push fixes and new features to users. Subscription plans guarantee subscribers will always have access to the latest versions. With physical media, updating requires trips to the store for new discs or serial numbers.
- Environmental Benefits
Opting for digital cuts back on the plastics and paper used to package software. Less fuel is wasted on transportation when boxes don't need to be trucked to stores. Consumers can reduce clutter and waste by accessing programs digitally instead of maintaining shelves of discs and manuals.
While e-waste from discarded devices remains an issue, extending the use of existing hardware through digital programs is generally greener than continually buying new packaged products. And for those who still want a piece of software to hold, many sellers offer add-on merchandise like t-shirts.
- Securing Your Purchase
The idea of buying something that only exists online can certainly feel risky. Software purchases are protected, though, by keeping account details and licenses secure. Digital ownership also avoids concerns like losing physical discs or product keys.
Downloading from legitimate sellers ensures programs are safe and malware-free, too. Reviews help avoid unstable or scam software. For added confidence, many sellers provide a return window for unsatisfactory downloads.

fuck you
FUCK.
YOU.
ok listen Randy, so wat i'm hearing is that the "real fans" should be enough to make a game successful? because no u don't want that
you want as many randos as you can to buy this, you want people who are just bebopping through target, seeing the game and going oh nice and deciding to give it a try
if every. single. major game. that comes out from now on is suddenly 80 smackaroos then its going to get ugly. Game releases are going to be in their own personal retail battle royal danganronpa hell, clawing each other's eyes out and hurling themselves into the road in front of oncoming cars screaming PLEASE TAKE ME PLEASE GOD GET ME OUT OF HERE
the game industry cannot survive off of "real fans" and "real fans" alone, you want the plebs who are all haha guns go brap brap pew pew, you want their fucking money Randy
you want the mentally checked out parents of middle schoolers who go ok sure and whip out their wallet when sweet baby Blessica points at the locked case of games at walmart and goes đ„șI WANT THE SHOOTING MANSđŠ
eighty fucking dollars makes everyone stop and go huh wait and open up ye old reddit/steam and look at reviews, u don't want that Randy, u don't want anything slowing down that momentum between ooo new Borderlands and plugging their debit card number/pin into the thingy
#80 fucking dollars is like almost 10 things now at the fucking grocery store you fuck#even the dirt cheap places are getting bad#randy pitchford#borderlands 4#gearbox software#video game prices#economy#video games#kotaku

Digital artists who only use a few brushes for their fully rendered artwork scare me. Wdym you donât have several gigabytes of brushes that you barely use. What do you mean you use the same five brushes for everything. What do you mean there is such a thing as enough brushes??? Youâre obviously wrong, there is never such thing as enough brushes.
#clip studio paintâs asset store is probably the greatest feature of any art software to ever exist#unless some other softwares have something similar. in which the same thing applies#Iâm pretty sure I have at least 15 gb worth of procreate brushes too#I have no way of counting but i wouldnât be surprised if it was over 1000 brushes#not including those that I installed but never imported#if anyone wants some resources please let me know I donât think iâve found all of them but probably found most of them#my posts#og post#thoughts for the void#procreate#clip studio paint#digital art

In the extended gameplay footage, players were treated to a first look at two of the four new Vault Hunters that will be featured in Borderlands 4. Vex the Siren is a powerful Siren who can empower herself or manifest deadly shades to fight alongside her, while Rafa the Exo-Soldier shines as a former Tediore trooper who wears an experimental exo-suit capable of digistructing an arsenal of weapons. Each Vault Hunter offers a unique playstyle, further augmented through the most advanced skill tree system in a Borderlands game to-date.
Across the vast and seamlessly connected planet of Kairos, players will face the oppressive Timekeeper. For thousands of years, he kept the planet hidden, controlling its inhabitants with cybernetic implants called Bolts and an army of synthetic soldiers known as The Order. Players will travel across the planet where theyâll encounter new and returning characters, creatures and inhabitants to battle, and unique factions spread across four distinct regions that seek freedom from the tyranny of the Timekeeper. The friends discovered along the way will be recruited by players to their cause while enemies will experience first-hand the arsenal of weapons and abilities wielded by the Vault Hunters.
As seen in the explosive footage shared during PlayStationâs State of Play, Vex and Rafa tear a path through a secret blacksite in Terminus Range, a frigid, mountainous region. This extended gameplay segment showcases the destructive power of the updated gear system in Borderlands 4, fueling the wildest loot chase ever, including:
Deadly weapons from across eight new and returning manufacturers, each boasting their own devastating strengths.
Licensed Parts system that combines the behaviors and abilities from multiple manufacturers into a single weapon.
Enhancements gear slot to augment weapons based on their manufacturer, rewarding extra firepower with an optimized gear loadout.
Ordnance, a shared slot for Grenades and Heavy Weapons like rocket launchers, recharges on a cooldown to keep you locked and loaded during especially tough encounters.
Rep Kit gear adds utility by letting players heal themselves or activate temporary buffs to help turn the tide of an intense battle.
Borderlands 4Â makes it easier than ever for friends to jump into cooperative multiplayer with a new system for players to form parties online and stay together when switching game modes. The game is designed for cooperative from the ground up, with instanced loot for each player, dynamic level scaling, and individual difficulty to keep the party together and having fun through the whole campaign.

PartitionMagic was a product created by PowerQuest in 1998, later obtained by Symantec, that could manipulate your hard drive's partitions just by booting off a 5.25" floppy, perfect for creating that D: drive or making space for Linux partitions.
Ths box came from CompUSA (flourished 1984-2008).

okay one thing that's fucked up with the 80-90 dollar switch 2 games is that. because there are no physical carts and they're just codes to verify a purchase online that means that come 10 years (the average lifespan of a nintendo system's online support) there's a pretty good chance that anyone getting a switch 2 for the first time just. won't be able to play anything on it unless they get one with an account already (if accounts even still work). because the servers will be down so they can't verify the codes they spent money on. and this will become less and less of a rare situation as time passes as this is, from what can be told now, the system that will slowly brick itself on purpose over a span of 10 years and demands 20-30 extra dollars compared to its competitors to do so
(i don't have an xbox or a ps5 to confirm if this will also be a problem for them but considering the massive fucking sizes of games these days it probably will be the case for that as well and i hate modern gaming a lot good god)
#text#switch 2#like the ds online support has been dead since 2014#but i can still play those two layton games i found at a retro games store a few years ago#official game carts as well as good as the day those games came out i just got them a lot later#because the whole ass games are on the carts it doesn't need a download or verification or anything#its just. heres the hardware that can run a ds game. theres the software for it on a neat little cart. stick it in. go#thats the POINT of a physical game is that you can be sure you can still play the thing if the system is discontinued#as well as be able to resell it to get your money back if you don't like it#that's another egregious point towards that high price tag. you can't even resell it#sure your n64 turok game that costed 80 dollars in 1999 was also egregious but you at least had the physical ass cartridge#and you can still resell it to get that money back nowadays#you won't be able to resell a digital game best you can do it try to get a refund but i doubt nintendo is half as good as steam is abt that#so just. fucked all around

finally captured some recordings i'm happy with <3 rest of tonight is gonna be for decorating + scanning in the zine and linking downloads for the audio files
#btw transferring songs to computer is sooooo easy w this keyboard. my old casio would store songs in this weird proprietary audio format#that NOTHING could read. so you were just stuck. i had to find some reddit person who made software allowing you to convert the casio files#to midi#but w this current keyboard it saves shit as .wav and all you gotta do is hit 'copy' and it saves it to the flash drive in like 5 seconds#and i was able to play that shit on my computer immediately. so now all i gotta do is convert the wav to mp3

if i hear another person talk about a retro game, system, or computer having a specific "soundfont" i think i'm gonna lose all will to live and spontaneously drop dead in front of them
#juney.txt#not how it works besties#older 8 bit machines generally had bespoke synthesizer chips that could output some square waves and some noise.#maybe some sine and saw waves if you were lucky#the megadrive had a yamaha chip in it but sega the bastards never gave devs proper instructions on how to use it#so a lotttt of devs just used the inbuilt settings on the development software they had#so a lot of megadrive games sound similar even though the system was technically capable of a lot more </3#the snes was allllll samples all day#any sounds you wanted you had to hand to the chip in advance#no inbuilt synths for you#anyway in all of these cases music data was just stored as raw computer instructions.#literally just code telling the audio hardware what to do each frame#no midis involved and simply slapping a soundfont someone made on a midi file someone else made does not constitute an ''8-bit'' cover
