Happy Halloween! For Halloween, I like to review zines with a focus on herbs/plants. This week's #zine #review is of "Dandelion: Migration is Beautiful," written by Celeste Inez Mathilda and published by Liminal Spaces!
I admire how dandelions grow everywhere. I’ve heard of dandelion wine. Behind that, I’ve never really thought about the plant.
This zine examines dandelions from an herbalist perspective. It shares the nutritional benefits of dandelions and how to use each part (flowers, leaves, roots) in different recipes.
I liked how this zine presents dandelions as a symbol of ascended boundaries: weed/medicinal plant, food/medicine, male/female.
After reading this, I wanted a cup of dandelion tea.

So unfortunately during Solarpunk aesthetic week, I'm going to be busy travelling back to India. That, and I have yet another internal assessment deadline in a week. So I'm busy trying to finish my essay.
But! That being said, the other day I learned to make simple zines! Here's one of them:

Honestly I'm so proud of myself for overcoming that mental block of doing something. But it wasn't difficult and I had fun. I'm definitely going to make more of these [when I get time :')].

Those are great topics! Omg!! When you get around to it I super duper wanna read I fucking love zines!!
Here's a few others you could also prob run off with that are solarpunk adjacent:
Dark sky friendly lights
Pricesharing/communal cooking (include a recipe??)
Patch making or other diy guides
Adopt-a-stop program ideas (like renos)
Guerrilla infrastructures (ex. Benches, crosswalks, lights)
Squatting / housing rights / tenant union stuff
Local foraging info
Any one else got ideas feel free to add your own but those are the ones at the top of my head 💕💕

★ foldable joy journal!! ★
Tumblr media
I made this little zine / journal that is printable and foldable easily at home!!
I think there is a lot to be said about being mindful and intentional about seeking the joy already present in our lives, a la Ross Gay's The Book of Delights. The word I chose to guide me in 2023 was "revel" which really encouraged me to take in all the delights in life :-)
This zine was inspired by a format I found in Special Collections of my college, and I made it through a process of lino-cut prints, collaging, and prototyping!
print here!!

see more images of it unfolded below!

The primary reason I made my zine was for poor, working class , and art folks that didn't have a lot of money and just let things wear down because trying to fix something comes at the cost of possibly breaking your only large device for communication, work, and entertainment.
Getting devices that important fixed or even checked costs money that poor folks don't have.
Tech Medic exists for everyone, really. Everyone should know why their computers get worse over time, and how to prolong life , and even upgrade parts when possible.
Writing a zine on techy things filters information to be approachable and centralized in a way that fills in the gaps of people with issues without the wording to know what questions to ask.
Pre-orders are Live!

Some details from the zine I made on my sailing artists’ residency. I’m a poet not a visual artist so please don’t judge the very homemade vibes haha. I really enjoyed the whole experience, and will share some photos soon!

Seeded Ground is a short botanical horror comic about growth. Everyone needs room to spread their leaves! If this growth is impeded, bad things happen. 🌿

This week's #zine #review is of "Sustainable Fashion for the Solar Punk" by @the-bramble--patch! A readable version is available on her tumblr and a printable version is available on her ko-fi!
My favorite pair of mittens is one of those flip-top ones, so you can flip the top off when you need to use your fingertips. These mittens have been wearing down lately. I liked these mittens and didn't want to replace them, so I took some embroidery thread and fixed them! (See second picture)
In this zine, the zinester shares some practical advice for mending clothes. I like how she approaches the subject from a solarpunk perspective. By focusing on sustainability, we not only get to use our clothes longer, we also create new fashions with them.
I'd recommend reading this zine.
This review was written October 6, 2023.

Omggg that be so cool?? Idk how we'd do that as I've never made a zine before but that sounds awesome as an idea anyway!
