New Jarch celebration ask! If you were to write a modern (<-optional) AU inspired by your own life/hobby/passion/whatever activity you practice yourself, what would it be like? (This is meant to be Jean centered, but information about other characters are more than welcome too!)

KoF newsroom au okay hear me out

jean is the managing editor of a failing newsroom. public trust in journalism is down. half her staff has left for more stable jobs in PR and marketing. her editor-in-chief is off on a sabbatical to barbatos-knows-where and keeps posting gorgeous beach pictures on his instagram story

she looks at the accounts and comes to the realization that they’re bleeding money. they’re running on a skeleton crew with no room for layoffs and she’s already slashed her print issues from 6/year to 4/year. if they don’t get subscriptions up by the end of the year they’re going to have to shutter operations

to save the newsroom she loves, jean and her motley crew of reporters are going to have to put on the biggest talent show break the biggest story this town has ever seen

meet the cast:

jean, the managing editor, is a rising star in the journalism world. she honed her reporting and investigative skills at international gigs in liyue and sumeru before returning home to pick up an editor position at the mondstadt times. she isn’t technically supposed to be in charge of the finances… or of the editorial direction… but with her editor-in-chief on sabbatical and her director of operations off to greener pastures, she kind of just does everything that needs doing. you can often find her and her red pen at the newsroom long after everyone else has gone home

amber is the newspaper’s one and only reporter on the breaking news beat. the times moved away from breaking news a few years ago to focus on more longform stories but amber has stubbornly stuck around. this beat is particularly gruelling because of how quickly news moves - you have to be on your toes all the time, filing sometimes 3-4 stories a day - but amber works tirelessly and with so much enthusiasm that jean sometimes wonders if she’s found something stronger than coffee to get her through the day

lisa is technically the features editor, but since they’re so shorthanded, she’s taken up the responsibility of working with the freelance fact-checkers as well, which jean is desperately grateful for. she doesn’t pull the long hours that jean and amber do, but she gets an incredible amount of work done in her 7-hour workdays. noelle is one of their longtime fact-checkers who’s incredibly meticulous and good at her job - she’s been gunning for a full-time position forever but jean just doesn’t have space in the budget to bring her on

albedo, the lightly mysterious science-prodigy-turned-reporter, heads up the investigative journalists. journos in general tend to be driven by curiosity (read: they love drama) but this bunch in particular loves to stick their noses in things. half their sources only offer information “not for attribution” (their quotes must remain anonymous) or “on background” (they cannot be quoted directly at all). sucrose is a relatively new addition to the team who’s been killing it (somewhat to jean’s surprise) because her inoffensive demeanour makes nervous sources more likely to want to speak with her

eula works the politics beat, which was itself a big headline when she joined the times. no one trusted a lawrence, scion of one of mondstadt’s oldest and most corrupt political dynasties, to report accurately on national politics. but eula has proved herself an invaluable addition to the newsroom - she’s earned a reputation for tough questions and hard-nosed reporting, and has gotten herself thrown out of city hall more than once for refusing to back down from a line of questioning. mika is a younger reporter on the international news beat - he doesn’t have eula’s doggedness, but his head for geopolitics is unparalleled

kaeya is in charge of the lifestyle section - he writes (or assigns) all the fun fluff pieces on celebrities, culture, fashion, food and wine, etc. despite leading the lowest-stakes section, he’s been known to bring jean massive political stories before eula or albedo even catch wind of them. jean suspects he maintains contacts from his time on the crime beat - but when she asks he always just blinks innocently at her and doesn’t respond. he’s also unofficially in charge of babysitting klee, who at the tender age of 8 is the times’s only unpaid intern (mostly because, when alice dropped her into jean’s care, it was easier to give her a title and let her hang around the newsroom than find an after-school program capable of keeping her from causing chaos)

The Hanged Man - Alexander Rossi

Upright, the Hanged Man can represent sacrifice, uncertainty, surrender, and new perspectives. Reversed, it can mean stalling, indecision, discontentment, and stagnation.

I went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to make Rossi this card. Eventually, I gave in. Him getting dropped by McLaren and his subsequent unemployment era was too much for me to ignore.

This is the card that won the poll! The other two options were tied, but I think the next card will be the Emperor.

#too bad [Sparrow]'s an Ancient. means nobody wants to have anything to do with her. rip." For what it's worth, I don't know anything about her (didn't read the AU yet lol) but I'm already hooked. It's not often you see (positive) focus on the Benefactors/Ancients/those masked weirdos

I'm not sure if there's anything to really Read in the sense that the AU is more like compilation of my personal worldbuilding ideas, philosophical/psychological ponderings and believes for RW than an outright story structure. Quite a bit of stuff has also been either changed, is Going to be changed or I never got around to showing it because I never got around to drawing it.

But yes, haha. This is I think a fourth time(?) someone said their interest had been piqued because Philosophy Sessions looks into the Ancients (called Anemons within the world) in a positive/realistic/human light and not just the ,,Ancients bad because they made te Iterators and then doomed them >:(" way. And everytime it beams smth like this into my brain for some reason.

But TLDR for Three Sparrows on a Wire. She started as a one dimensional character meant to be only a backstory love interest mention to Caper of Euros, but I felt bad for her & dissatisfied with that so I went to deepen her and as a result the entirety of the Anemon species gained giant depth and Also focus in the AU.

She's supposed to be a bit unhinged but caring low caste born religious failure that got into a high caste position by more or less luck, where a god calculator fell in love with her that she hadn't anticipated and didn't take seriously at first until she fell for the guy too.

Outside the world, as a character with a purpose, she's meant to serve as a window for those people that bash the Ancients and the religion.

She's meant to be appealing for that kinda person through the fact she doesn't do jackshite for herself from the spiritual lens even though religion for Anemons is more like a science- a fact of life- than something that's existence can be doubted. It's also a good exposition tool, since she has yet to learn about the spirituality herself, therefore letting the audience figure it out along with her (if I got off my ass and managed to plan out Some kinda plotline. at least episodic plotlines if not overarching..).

And then there's the fact that she's kinda a failgirl even though accidentally successful. I have some more Ancient ocs (less shown though, yeah) that didn't ever seem to really catch attention as much as her. I guess her being a caring mess makes her feel approachable. Even though she's a bruise-colored horror sachet with a mean looking beak.

If there's something that attracts a modern audience, it's a character that can't seem to just like itself for one damn second and tries to play it off.

im so sorry if this is an annoying question but are you still working on the jesskas reunion animatic 😯

you're good dw! and about the animatic, it's both a yes and no?

to explain, and to give an update on on the au in general: CJAU has 3 main arcs, the second being the biggest (and has a secondary arc within). i already have an idea of what the end points of all those arcs would be like, and the reunion animatic marks the end of the first.

at the time i talked about the reunion (which i think was like. a year ago? around the time of the compliance comic? oh mygod) there was supposed to be two more comics before i wrapped it up, one of them being LWOAL. and since i work on multiple parts at the same time, the reunion already had a script going and i started thumbnailing right after Compliance was out. i even got halfway through the whole thing!

...but after some revisits to the storyline i just thought it wasn't good enough. i wanted the second arc to have a solid enough foundation for me to work with and what i had before wasn't cutting it, and as much as i wanted to get to it i don't want to rush things. so in between rethinking the plot, working on LWOAL and it getting like 3-4 redos, and the weird mcsm-specific burnout that happened mid oct-dec, the animatic was put on hold.

however! i've figured out many things since then and at this point in time there should be ~2-3 more comics before the reunion! and i want to actually pace myself this time before i start work on the animatic again. so while i'm not working on it atm, i still really, really want (and plan) to get it out someday :)

CJAU is kinda like an experiment for me to play around with making comics/storytelling since i've never tackled something this big before, so heads up things are always subject to change haha. i do think about it a lot and want to make it the best it can be- i like what i have going too, but ig sometimes it leads to a lot of unneeded pressure on myself,, it brings out the perfectionist in me idk why hfjkgd. im gonna try to chill out on that front tho, and in the meantime thanks for everyone's patience with me i know i take a while with this au 🥹

Ray's After Ending is so funny because for a good chunk of it, most of the RFA members are knocked out by V's sleeping gas (Saeran is immune, Saeyoung isn't present bc he was kidnapped by his agency under his father's orders and MC wakes up in like an hour) but the game has a call feature where you can call the characters and it would be a waste if you couldn't use it bc the characters were unavailable so instead they have other people pick up the call (Jumin's driver picks up Jumin's phone, Jumin's father picks up Zen's phone, Yoosung's friends and mom pick up Yoosung's phone and Jaehee's coworkers pick up Jaehee's phone) and we do get to learn about the characters from outsider's point of view but it's so funny to me that these people are visiting their loved ones and suddenly the phone rings and they decide to just. answer it. and start talking to this stranger they've never met
