Five Fics

@ifishouldvanish tagged me to do some shameless self-promotion for five of my stories! Here goes:

In the darkness on the edge of town - Back to the Future, (young) Biff Tannen x Marty McFly, in progress - I started this to get out of my own perfectionism that stopped me from posting stuff and the response to it has been amazing. It grew from a James Dean film-inspired drabble to 4 chapters to 8 with a possible sequel... and it got me into a wonderful BttF fan community that is so inspiring and making me want to write so much more for these two! I sometimes feel like all I ever do is write angst and pining but the thing is, I'm good at it lol. And writing about time travel throws up such interesting situations and conundrums that I'm quite obsessed with it now!

Fishing in the dark - Miami Vice, Sonny Crockett x Larry Zito, complete - This was one that wouldn't let me go during my Miami Vice Summer last year. It's too bad the Miami Vice fandom isn't very active and that this is such a rare pairing, meaning it doesn't get much traction, but I loved writing this and especially Larry and Sonny's chemistry, which we see so little of on screen. Again, lots of angst and pining.

Green light - The D-Train, Dan x Oliver, complete - this was a strange drabble kind of thing that I wrote after seeing the movie which really captivated me. I was impressed with how this came together and I really like the metaphor of the colour green running through it. It seems only a few people have heard of the film so this is definitely the smallest fandom I've ever written for, but the responses to my fic have been ever so nice!

Stop all the clocks - The Pacific, Eugene Sledge x Sid Philips, complete - Sometimes I reread my own fics and this is one that even years later on I love to return to. The HBO War fandom for a long while was really comforting to me in how it portrayed young people who had been through something traumatic and were struggling to pick up the pieces afterwards. I really enjoyed the narrative device of exploring one scene from different viewpoints and I had so much fun writing Mary essentially as an OC.

The company of wolves- Sicario, Kate Macer x Alejandro Gillick, in progress - This is kind of cheating since it's a series, but part four of this has been in the works for about five years. Since I've been having health and mental health issues it has sadly taken a backseat because it was hard for me to write about something so serious while dealing with my own stuff (hence my pivot to BttF lol) but I'm fully intent on completing it. I still get lovely comments on it every month or so and that makes me so happy! These stories really pushed me as a writer and continue to do so, and I'm just really happy with what I've created.

"ORDER UP!"

The sound of the head cook in the kitchen book you out of your stupor. With quick and precise steps, you grabbed the food and brought it over to the correct table. You gave a smile and a nod before trudging over to stand behind the counter again.

Now, you loved the little diner that you worked at. It was quaint and full of kind people who loved the homestyle cooking it provided. But there was a lot of downtime and your boss was very strict, which meant you had to be ready at a moment's notice to serve. You wished he would lay off for even a day so you could scroll on your phone or joke around with the kitchen staff in the back. It wasn't too much to ask for a little fun, was it?

The front door bell jingled, which alerted you to a new customer. Grabbing a couple menus, you gave a bright smile that only brightened more when you saw who it was. "Hello! Welcome to Sonny's Diner! Usual table, boys?"

Nayuta nodded with a bright smile. "Yes please!"

"Excellent! Right this way!" 

As you led them to their usual table towards the front of the restaurant, you caught Nayuta elbowing his brother in the ribs. "See? I told you they would be working today."

When they sat down, you watched Kanata roll his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, whatever."

You chuckle before saying, "Honestly, when am I not working? But it pays the bills, right, Kanata?"

He nodded and you caught the little blush on his cheeks. "I'm assuming Nayuta still wants the usual?"

His brother nodded. "Yes please!"

You nod and take their menus they didn't open. "Of course. I wouldn't have it any other way."

You write their ticket and give it to the cooks. As they get to work, you make Kanata's coffee just the way he likes it and a milkshake for Nayuta. When you arrive back at your table, you give them their drinks.

"The usual coffee and milkshake."

"Usual?" Nayuta tilts his head to the side. "Are you trying to say we're boring?"

"They're not saying that." Kanata shot back, his hands darting for the coffee mug as soon as you set it down and almost scalding his tongue as he took a sip.

You shake your head. "It's not that at all, I promise! It's just this whole place gets boring after a while. It feels like it's the same thing day in and day out, and I don't know, I just feel like my days, or rather, my life needs some more excitement."

Nayuta frowned at your words as he drank his milkshake. "That's sad to hear. But you still like your job, right?"

"I love my job!" You exclaim. "I just feel like I'm standing still while everyone else is moving, you know? Like I've reached a dead end while everyone is going on to bigger and cooler things than me."

Kanata frowned. "You're not in a dead end."

"Thanks. I appreciate it. But I think you might be the only one who thinks that." You give a small sigh and a sad smile. This only makes the brother's frowns deepen.

However, before either of them can say anything, you are called back to the counter as the front door bell rings with more customers. You spend the next half hour doing your job like normal: taking orders, serving food, and bussing tables. Eventually, you have a few minutes to spare to talk to the Yatonokami brothers once more.

"How's everything tasting?" You ask with your usual bright customer service smile.

"Amazing as always!" Nayuta chirps.

"That's good to hear! I'll tell the kitchen to get your dessert order started-"

"When do you clock out?" Kanata asks before you can turn away.

You pause, not sure if you heard him correctly. "Pardon?"

"When do you clock out?"

"Um... not until after the lunch rush, which is in about an hour... why?" You ask, your eyebrows skeptically furrowing.

He glances over at his brother, who is practically bouncing in his seat, most likely from all the sugar he has had. "We're going to take you out to do something fun. We want to prove to you that you're not standing still while everyone's moving ahead."

A light blush decorated your cheeks. "Ah, you guys, you really don't have to-"

"It's not up for debate." Nayuta quips back, his chipper grin and sweet voice still present. "You're going and that's final, understand?"

You nod. "Alright then. Are you guys okay with waiting?"

Kanata held up his mug. "If you keep bringing me coffee, I'll stay as long as I have to."

You chuckle and tell him you'll get a fresh pot brewing just for him. As you leave their table, there's some pep in your step. You can't wait to see what fun things you'll get to do with your favorite customers in about an hour.

Headcanons: Christmas

Christmas, like Thanksgiving, is a big deal in the twins’ family. Though Kimberly would admit that, if not for her loved ones (specifically her sons and aunt), she would in fact skip the holiday as it hasn’t felt the same to her since her mother passed away. But the traditions that she and her brother once followed when their mother was alive have been continued regardless, in part to commemorate Fiona’s memory. 

Christine Hale took over the role of cooking the Christmas Eve family meal, with Kimberly and Kole aiding her as they got older. As Jack and Sonny grew up, Kimberly would have them help in decorating their own house - putting up the Christmas tree is Sonny’s favorite holiday activity, and he’s always been the one to set the star on the tree top. While decorating the Hale household, that role is rotated in turns every year between the twins, their aunt and uncle, and the boys (along with Kimberly’s ex-husband and Kole’s ex-fiancee when they were a part of the family).

Melk's 250 Follower Celebration!

Ah! I’ve hit my first fairly-major follower milestone! As such, I wanted to celebrate with a bingo idea that has been on my mind for ages: What’s Your Fantasy.

I love writing smut and so it only seems appropriate to celebrate with a bingo card full of possibilities. 😈

Each bingo square will be a line from this classic piece of work by the sage poet, Ludacris. If you don’t know the song, go take a listen. For your own education and sheer enjoyment.

I will be accepting requests from today until 1/18 for 250-500 word fills. Feel free to send in a request for Rafael Barba, Nevada Ramirez, Jackson Neill, or Paul Mendelson + a square. Something with Wind and Wild finding out Wild’s actually related to Wind? (It’s a personal hc of mine that they’re related due to vah medoh being named after Medli and the fact that there are rito in the first place + rito’s village theme being a variant of the dragon roost island theme)

“When will we learn to stop trying to figure out the timeline.” Warriors deadpanned to Sky as he watched the others fight.

“Do we ever learn?” Sky replied, laughing at the sight before him. He supposed there were benefits to being the forger of the Master Sword. His place in the timeline was relatively solid.

“No, no, no. We all know there are different timelines, there has to be.” Hyrule waved his hands.

“Yes, and you and Legend are in the same one, we know that at least.” Four nodded.

“Why does it matter?” Wild whispered to Twilight.

“It doesn’t.” Twilight said simply. 

“That’s funny coming from you! Legend pointed. “You have blood relation to prove your place in the timeline!”

“It’s Time’s fault for breaking the timeline in the first place.” Four accused.

“Hey! Blame the sages, not me.” Time spoke up, holding his hands up in defense.

“Do you know where you are in the timeline?” Twilight asked Wild curiously while the others fought around their campfire.

“It’s been 10,000 years since the last hero in my Hyrule.” Wild shrugged. “So, I mean, does it even matter in my timeline?” 

“I’ve never been big on blood meaning everything, the people in Ordon are my family even though I was found in the woods. But if you’re curious, we may be able to figure it out.” Twilight assured. Wild never knew how he and the others somehow always knew what to say to him.

The truth was, Wild wasn’t sure that he wanted to know the answer. The group had helped him understand that the events of 100 years ago was out of his control, even if he had a hard time believing it sometimes. But he wasn’t stupid, he saw the forlorn gazes the others cast towards the ruins of his Hyrule. Castletown was a ghost of itself, even if Zelda had plans to begin rebuilding, it wouldn’t be the bustling city the other Links knew for a long time, perhaps with the small population of his Hyrule it never would be.

But he loved his Hyrule. He knew every inch of the land yet it still managed to surprise him. The land nurtured him, and he nurtured the land. He ensured monsters didn’t destroy nature, and nature forgave him for letting wildfires. He killed animals for food and ensured he used every part. The others could make fun of him all they wanted, but it was a mutual bond he longed for when he was far from it. To see the others look at it with such sad gazes after a long journey… he understood, but it hurt.

“Meh.” Wild answered. “If we happen to figure it out, then we figure it out.” Wild ignored the suspicious look Twi sent him. Wolf boy was too perceptive for his own good.

“Well Wild and I are obviously in similar timelines!” Wind, with ever impeccable timing, proclaimed.

“Don’t sound so sure.” Warriors challenged. “Don’t forget that almost your entire world is water.” Warriors said, as if Wind could forget that. As if Wind could forget that his entire kingdom of Hyrule flooded, the kingdom Time worked so hard to protect.

“Yeah, no shit!” Wind cursed to let out some steam. “But water dries, I’ve seen entire places in other Hyrules that used to be covered in water.”

“Those are lakes and rivers, not entire oceans.” Legend spoke up.

“Yeah but Wild has said before that the last hero came 10,000 years before him! Who knows what has happened since my time! And before the hero who knows how long it’s been since I was there!” Wind puffed out his chest.

“What makes you so sure it’s you anyway?” Hyrule asked.

“Easy! Our Koroks are practically identical! I mean evolution takes time right?” Wind asked with arms wide. “And Vah Medoh, that divine beast Wild told us about, sounds like Medli from the Rito in my world. And you guys don’t even have Rito! Maybe they originated in my Hyrule and continued on in Wild’s Hyrule! The music they play and their instruments are really similar!” As Wind kept listing off points, Wild didn’t know what to think. Wind? His predecessor? Perhaps even his blood? How was he supposed to react?

“And what does Wild think of this theory?” Sky raised an eyebrow. Despite his teasing tone, Wild knew Sky was making sure he wasn’t left out of this conversation, and it wasn't for the first time Wild was extremely grateful for Sky. 

“Yeah Wild! What do you think?” Wind was practically vibrating with excitement and nerves. What did Wild think? He didn’t have any better theories, and besides, Wind made a lot of valid points. Wild bit his lip.

“W-well.” Shit, Wild could feel the words bubbling in his throat again. It’s been so long though! “I mean, I- well.” Wild tried to repeat what he had been thinking about, how Wind made great points and how the boy had obviously thought long and hard about this. Instead, with a frustrated huff, he raised his hands to sign, as usual he appreciated that no one interrupted him. ‘Sounds good to me.’ Wild signed simply, hoping his message came across well enough.

“Yes! I’m a grandfather!” Wind cried cheerfully, much to the shock of the other Links.

“We never agreed you were blood related-” Four tried to argue, only to be shushed by Wind.

“Shut it, sonny!” Wind pointed with a glare he most likely thought was threatening.

“You have to at least put a thousand ‘greats’ in front of that grandfather title.” Warriors lectured with an amused smirk.

“No one has time for that! I’m near the end of my life and you want me to waste time on that?” Wind shot back, as if they were the ones being ludicrous.

“Wind, you’re 14-”

“I’m old!” Wind cried out. “I’m decrepit! My joints ache! My knees pop every time I bend down!” Wind rambled.

“Looks like you’re being replaced.” Legend whispered to Time, who simply glared back. He did not sound like that!

Hyrule glanced towards Wild, slightly afraid this conversation would make him upset. Finding out where you were in the timeline was… odd. It was nice to know where you stood but the answer wasn’t always happy, or it wasn’t always what you wanted. Hyrule relaxed upon seeing Wild smiling and laughing at Wind’s antics with the rest of them, only getting louder as Wind continued on. Wait, didn’t this mean Wild was a part of Time’s line? And so Twilight’s as well? Oh well, better not go there tonight.

“Hey Wind?” Wild questioned turning in his bed roll to face the younger boy. The others had mostly turned in, and Wind had settled next to Wild’s bed roll, causing Wild’s chest to light up with an odd warmth.

“Yeah Wild?” Wind ceased his joking tone at Wild’s serious one.

“Are you… upset? That it's me who's your potential predecessor?” Wild asked hesitantly.

“Wild we’ve talked about this-”

“No, no, not that.” Wild really did not want to get into his, what Four called, ‘self esteem issues’. “But… I’ve seen the way you all look at my ruins. Aren’t you, you know, sad, that that’s what Hyrule turned into?” There was an awkward silence and Wild as glad Sky was probably far enough away for his watch he couldn’t hear them.

“Do you remember when we first got to my Hyrule, I mean the first time with you there?” Wind asked, and Wild didn’t see how this related but let the boy continue. “And you were stunned by how much water there was. I mean the look on your face.” Wind joked, but it was stiff and dry. “I was self conscious too. Especially with the Hero of Time there, I loved visiting my home but having Time there always made me nervous. I mean I was already suspecting that he was perhaps part of my timeline. What if he found out his Hyrule, the one he worked so hard to save, was flooded during my quest?”

“That wasn’t your fault-”

“I know.” Wind interrupted Wild, with a small smile that this time seemed genuine. “Still at the time, the way you were all were still talking about how much water there was, how irritating it was to go around on boats all the time, how odd it was that there were so few land masses. It scared me, I thought they all hated what their land had become.” Wild’s eyes widened in surprise. He never even knew…

“But Time knew something was wrong, of course he did. I couldn’t tell him yet, I had to be sure. I didn’t want him to know until I knew for sure, as excited as I was to meet the Hero of Time, I was so scared what he would think of me, of my Hyrule.” Wind’s voice trailed off into a whisper, and wrestled his arm out of his bed roll and placed it on Wind’s shoulder. That’s what he was supposed to do, right? He relaxed when Wind smiled and nodded in thanks.

“What he said, it stuck with me. I told him how I felt, how the others seemed to hate my Hyrule. You know what he said?” Wild knew it was a rhetorical question, still he shook his head. “He said ‘It’s not bad, it’s different.’ I know it's simple, but he’s right. We’re just not used to each other’s Hyrules, that includes you Wild. We’re not used to ruins, or Guardians, or insane lightning storms. But the giant mushrooms you have are amazing.” They weren’t really mushrooms, but it still caused Wild to smile. “And those super tall islands you showed us! And your Rito have an amazing village. You know how I see it?” Wind waited for Wild to tilt his head against his bed roll. “I think our Hyrules just prove that no matter what, we’ll endure. There’s been cataclysms, great floods, calamity, but no matter what, Hyrule finds a way. That’s pretty great, don’t you think?” Huh, Wild had never thought about it in that grand of a way. He knew that the people of Hyrule, all of them, Hylian or no, were strong. But Wind put it into perspective. Wild wondered if Wind knew how good he was. Just… good. A good kid, a good hero, a good person, a good brother. Just genuinely good. Wild didn’t know how to say that, especially without sounding patronizing, so he settled for something else.

“You’re right Wind, thank you.” Wind knew the words were simple, but the emotion behind them got Wild’s point across perfectly. Wind smiled brightly.

“That’s Grandpa Wind to you.” Wild had to muffle his laughter in his bed roll.

22. Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?

Some of my older works that are on tumblr I'm fine with. Like I do love this little BirdFlash piece I did for a request, I love the little mini drabble with Steph as the Doctor and Tim as her companion that I always think about expanding on but will likely never do.

Technically "Unwilling Treasure Hunt Participant" is older. I wrote it back in like 2013 and then edited it latter to post it on a whim. I don't have a lot of finished older works, just scraps of ideas or a few broken paragraphs. I just never had the drive to complete anything larger scale.

Older OLDER fics from when I was in high school are atrocious. I had this multichaptered Sonny With A Chance fic I was working on that I had a binder for with a custom cover. I brought that to school, wrote during class, typed it up at home. I had a mini following! I thought it was great! I glanced at it recently...let's just say that it's about as advanced in length and storytelling as My Immortal. It's also unfinished.

There is an older work I'm proud of, though I haven't read it in a long time, but I did a oneshot where I decided to kill off Alex Russo. Don't know what posessed me but I had fun with it.

My first fics are all just very juvenile. I read a lot, I knew how long most chapters in books were, but for some reason I fell prey to the short form no substance chapters as most teens seem to.

Older than that I just used to write little books as a kid. I'd take a bunch of paper, fold it, staple it, and just write/draw whatever was on my mind. My friend did too. I went through a period when I was 8 or 9 where I liked making miniature books. I read "The Doll People" and loved the idea of the tiny diary one of the dolls had, so I would make books super small that only needed one staple, and I'd write/draw as tiny as I could. I used to make tiny horror stories.

I've always loved storytelling, and one day I'll air out my high school fanfics for YouTube because I think it will be fun to cringe at myself.
