The short story begins following the death of the titular Miss Emily Grierson who, born around the time of the Civil War, places the narrative present day around 1930. As mayor of the fictional town of Jefferson, Mississippi, where the narrative is set, Colonel Sartoris is representative of former southern glory. He is the wealthy, powerful, white man; charming and problematic in equal measure. He is racist, and he looks favourably upon Miss Emily as a relic of these same elitist ideals. Miss Emily is a remnant of the past, now dead. Upon crossing the threshold of her private gothic space, the townsfolk’s impression of Miss Emily is shattered. In its place is a haunting reality – an image that grows more horrific the longer you look… I have put together a history of the American Civil War (which I appreciate will be very familiar to some of you, and totally new to others) to provide context for your responses to 'A Rose for Emily'. πŸ”—: link in bio, which includes prompts to get you thinking! So many restaurants so little time
Seems like a million and one restaurants have popped up in Canberra recently that I haven’t even HEARD of let alone get a chance to try it out. Have I been living under a rock? Well there is no time like the present to rectify the situation starting with Soulfood Kitchen tonight in Erindale.

Considered, by many historians, to be the first "true surrealist" photographer in the USA, Clarence John Laughlin (1905 - 1985) is best-known for photographing cemeteries, plantations, & abandoned buildings, primarily of Louisiana, but also of the broader American south. To me, this image entitled 'The Auto-Eroticists' (1941), evokes Flannery O'Connor's 'bird ladies' from the start of 'Wise Blood' (1952). What do you think? πŸ“Έ: 'The Auto-Eroticists', Clarence John Laughlin, 1941, via The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothic #southerngothicnovel #southerngothicliterature #southernamerican #louisiana #southerngothicphotography #blackandwhitephotography #blackandwhite #clarencejohnlaughlin #surrealism #surrealist #flanneryoconnorwiseblood #wiseblood #flanneryoconnor #surrealphotography #photography #photographer #americanphotography #academic #art https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzv44KvgBw9/?igshid=jzemp6isk5rv

Born 1933, Cormac McCarthy is a genre-spanning American author, screenwriter, & playwright. You may recognise his work best in film - 'No Country for Old Men' (The Coen Bros., 2007), 'The Road' (John Hillcock, 2009), & 'Child of God' (James Franco, 2013) are all adaptations of his stories. 'All the Pretty Horses' (1992), also adapted for the big screen (Billy Bob Thornton, 2002), is a bildungsroman set in the late 1940s that follows a 16 year old Texan seeking a fresh start in Mexico. Against the unforgiving backdrop of the mountainous Mexican borderlands, 'All the Pretty Horses' maintains the 'frontier' atmosphere of early American novels and great Westerns. True to the Southern Gothic mode, it is a savage, brutal tale that positions violence, unglamourised, as a simple fact of the south. If that weren't enough, McCarthy adopts a similar stylistically dismissive approach to grammar & syntax as Faulkner; the result is poetic & exceptionally hard to beat. If it wasn't clear, 10/10, would recommend! . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothic #southernamerican #southerngothicnovel #southerngothicliterature #cormacmccarthy #mccarthy #alltheprettyhorses #bloodmeridian #nocountryforoldmen #theroad #childofgod #western #gothicnovel #earlyamerican #frontier #mexico #coenbrothers #jamesfranco #billybobthornton #bookrecommendation #booknerd #bookworm #bookstagram #bookcover #bookreview #books #academic https://www.instagram.com/p/Bztjt2UgrBv/?igshid=1vvjom97gvqsp

During this July-long πŸ₯€Southern SpellπŸ₯€, we are exploring the Southern Gothic here at Generally Gothic. To do so, defining the Southern Gothic is essential. Whilst I will be publishing a blog post with greater detail, for those of you here/who prefer bite-sized chunks of info, I'll also be breaking it down into some key essentials. β€’β€’β€’ The Southern Gothic is referred to as a literary genre in its own right, a subgenre (a sub-categorisation of the wider gothic genre), and a literary mode, which is a classification of identifying qualities shared by literary works that generally fit better within another, established genre. However you choose to classify it, the Southern Gothic is still popular with authors & audiences today. It began in nineteen century America, with author & poet, Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849). Singular in its geographical specificity, the themes of the genre (or subgenre, or mode!) are directly influenced by the tumultuous history of the American south - that is, the southern states of the USA. πŸ—“οΈTo be continued... ❔Any questions so far? Anything particular you'd like covered throughout this month? Let me know! . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothic #southernamerican #american #americansouth #americanliterature #englishliterature #literature #literary #edgarallanpoe #poe #southerngothicliterature #academic #bookworm #booknerd #house #americanarchitecture #calaverasbigtrees #bigtrees #calaveras #california #americanhistory #genrestudies #literarytheory #genre #mode #forest #houseinthewoods https://www.instagram.com/p/BzqiF8kgx0r/?igshid=woejjalstu1q

Died this day, 1962, firm Generally Gothic favourite & Southern Gothic great: William Faulkner. Born 1897, Faulkner authored poems, short stories, and a number of novels specifically set in the same fictional county of Yoknapatawpha, which was based upon his home county in Oxford, Mississippi. Of the Nobel Prize winning author's creative, modernist literary style, Southern Gothic contemporary Flannery O'Connor (see yesterday's post for more on her) competitively stated the following: "the presence alone of Faulkner in our midst makes a great difference in what the writer can and cannot permit himself to do. Nobody wants his mule and wagon stalled on the same track the Dixie Limited is roaring down." It is, then, fair to say that the influence of Faulkner spread through his work to the Southern Gothic genre, and beyond to inspire his contemporaries, such as O'Connor, to be better writers. . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothic #southerngothicliterature #gothicliterature #southernamerican #southernstates #williamfaulkner #faulkner #flanneryoconnor #americanliterature #literature #modernist #modernistliterature #quote #author #mississippi #yoknapatawpha #oxfordmississippi #literary #books #annotatedbooks #bookcover #bookworm #bookstagram #asilaydying #academic #sanctuary #thesoundandthefury https://www.instagram.com/p/BzmQbR4gm96/?igshid=b2jsdnqotjva

"Offering itself as the most grotesque work in all of Southern fiction, Flannery O'Connor's 'Wise Blood' is a novel only in the widest possible sense of the word. It is a prose fiction of considerable length, but beyond that requirement none of the standard elements of the novel is to be found. The development of character, the exploration of character interaction, and the development of plot are unimportant. Such action as occurs is often without motivation, leads nowhere, and is almost always absurd. Any resemblance to the world of objective reality is certainly incidental. Yet, when these things are said, the book still remains one of the most impressive creations of the School of the Grotesque, or School of Southern Gothic. That the book is rewarding despite its unconventionality can be attributed to the author's singular vision and style. Miss O'Connor several times commented upon her vocation: her mission, as she saw it, was to depict the reality of Christianity to an audience for whom nothing transempirical is real." - Lewis A. Lawson, 'Flannery O'Connor and The Grotesque: Wise Blood' in 'Renascence, Vol 17, Issue 3: Essays on Values in Literature' (1965). πŸ“Έ: Via Pinterest - unknown artist. . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothic #southerngothicliterature #gothicliterature #gothicfiction #southernamerican #theamericansouth #flanneryoconnor #gothicauthor #femalegothic #femaleauthor #wiseblood #flanneryoconnorwiseblood #religion #christianity #thegrotesque #grotesque #lewisalawson #literarycriticism #literarytheory #literature #literarycritic #pinterest #journal #literaryjournal #renascence #puppet #southernfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzjzpq6AqJt/?igshid=8y0vkawmuh78

Photographer Dorothea Lange (1895 - 1965) is best-known for her documentation of the human side of the Great Depression in the American South. Whilst the Great Depression had an effect on the global economy, it began in the United States in 1929 and continued into the 1930s. Based in San Francisco, Lange began her career with studio-based portrait photography. The Great Depression brought a new source of inspiration; with a gaze that has been compared to John Steinbeck's (1902 - 1968) 1939 novel 'The Grapes of Wrath' [Frederick Isaac, 1989], Lange turned to photojournalism. Focussing on the poverty inflicted upon Californians in rural, farming regions, her work brought government attention, and in turn aid, to the suffering. πŸ“Έ: 'White Angel Breadline', Dorothea Lange, 1933. . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothic #southernamerican #dorothealange #greatdepression #americandepression #americansouth #california #farming #poverty #americanhistory #photography #photojournalism #whiteangelbreadline #johnsteinbeck #thegrapesofwrath #sanfransisco #economy #economicdepression #depression #blackandwhitephotography #1930s #1920s #portraiture #portrait https://www.instagram.com/p/BzelkCZAZXh/?igshid=q1qrq8t8888h
