True Detectiveย is an HBO anthology series made up, currently, of 3 seasons. The initial eight-part mini-series (now known as season 1), which aired in 2014, is set in Louisiana, USA. Season 1 follows a pair of homicide detectives, Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), as they investigate a case which begins with the discovery of a murdered prostitute. The Gothic aspects of the series are presented as eternal, universal, and contextually realistic, resulting in an affective and lasting portrayal of what the Gothic may mean in a contemporary, Southern setting. Today on Generally Gothic, this is what we will begin to explore through a close textual analysis ofย True Detective, Season 1. A fair few of you expressed interest in reading it for yourselves so no spoilers, but... wow! This has bagged a spot in my fave reads of the year so far and, yep, probably ever. Did I mention "... wow!"? ๐Ÿฆž As I've seamlessly slipped under a ๐Ÿฅ€Southern Spell๐Ÿฅ€ - which would have been my July theme were I organised - today I'm sharing a backdated review of a book that fits the theme. I read Delia Owens 'Where the Crawdads Sing' (2018) in February, during lockdown number ?'. I, therefore, did not know that this book was on every display stand, in every not-very-literary bookselling space. Good job, because I'm a recovering book snob - trying to avoid avoiding bestsellers and newcomers, whilst still supporting independent sellers and buying secondhand โœŒ๐ŸŒ. Reading habits are political, don't ya know? Anyway... ๐Ÿฆž Set in the marshlands of North Carolina, 'Crawdads' is an ode to oddity, to nature, to growing up and figuring yourself out. The wilds of the damp, deep south are an alluring and unfamiliar setting; Owens immerses you, enabling utter, bone-warming escapism. To our young protagonist, Kya, the marsh is the only home she has ever known; it is a part of her very being. Known, unkindly, as the 'Marsh Girl' about town, Kya's is a tale of isolation and liberation, with murder and romance at its core. ๐Ÿฆž Navigating familiar Southern Gothic themes such as poverty, racial injustice, and loneliness, Owens lacks the gravity of McCullers or O'Connor. I would term 'Crawdads' "soft Southern Gothic" - a poor white girl fairytale that just might fall apart if you pick too closely... Nonetheless, it is an altogether engrossing tale and I thoroughly enjoyed a little marshland adventure. Have you read this one? ๐Ÿฆž ๐Ÿ”—in bio to McCullers audio-review! . #wherethecrawdadssing #deliaowens #bookstagram #bookreview #southerngothic #southernlit #americanliterature #generallygothic #gothic #booknerd #spookynerd #southernspell #northcarolina #flanneryoconnor #carsonmccullers https://www.instagram.com/p/CR5_b76LkS3/?utm_medium=tumblr

So far, I have only shared literature from my [forever ongoing because I heart it very much] exploration of the Southern Gothic, which means that without existing knowledge or ability to visualise an author's descriptions with complete precision, the types of buildings I'm discussing may be unfamiliar to you. The range of architecture within the Southern Gothic is grand and imposing, humble, rickety, and/or decaying... I may gather a portfolio of dream houses and nightmarish history to share on the blog with a more in-depth look at the architecture of the American south one day, but for now, here's a quick glimpse through the iconic photography of Dorothea Lange (1895 - 1965). Pictured is an antebellum plantation house built before the Civil War. Photographed in 1937, it is a shadow of its proud former self. Swipe for a glimpse at the faded interior, and the woman who, along with her partner, made home of it then. The short story begins following the death of the titular Miss Emily Grierson who, born around the time of the Civil War, places the narrative present day around 1930. As mayor of the fictional town of Jefferson, Mississippi, where the narrative is set, Colonel Sartoris is representative of former southern glory. He is the wealthy, powerful, white man; charming and problematic in equal measure. He is racist, and he looks favourably upon Miss Emily as a relic of these same elitist ideals. Miss Emily is a remnant of the past, now dead. Upon crossing the threshold of her private gothic space, the townsfolkโ€™s impression of Miss Emily is shattered. In its place is a haunting reality โ€“ an image that grows more horrific the longer you lookโ€ฆ I have put together a history of the American Civil War (which I appreciate will be very familiar to some of you, and totally new to others) to provide context for your responses to 'A Rose for Emily'. ๐Ÿ”—: link in bio, which includes prompts to get you thinking! It passed the paperback test (if I connect with a book on Kindle, I will always switch to paperback around the middle, if the option is available to me), though the ending, or lack thereof, was a shock... entirely due to my ignorance! Angelou's words had already taken hold of me on some elemental level when I first experienced her poetry years ago. I regret keeping this text on my tbr so long, but have been interested by the Southern Gothic traits in a work of literary non-fiction. This, really, emphasises the influence of history upon the subgenre. It is the problematic role of the divided south[ern American states] that feeds horror into reality. Angelou's own experiences are traumatic and grotesque; her strength, poise, and determination are undeniably inspirational... but, mostly, all I want for little Angelou is a stable home. And so we return to the Southern Gothic representation of 'house'. It is, avoiding direct spoilers & trigger warnings, under her estranged mother's roof that a young Angelou is irrevocably scarred. If safety cannot be found in the home, and if the home itself cannot be found, how is anything but a Gothic existence possible? ๐Ÿค”: What do you think: Can we apply literary genres to works of autobiography? It provides the language and landscape of the literature. Out of a house the first gothic story erupted in 1764... which in turn had a house (albeit an immodest one, i.e. a castle) directly at its centre. Though Faulkner is commonly thought of as the progenitor of the Southern Gothic, as I suggested on Friday, the subgenre arguably began nearly a hundred years earlier with Poe's 'The Fall of the House of Usher', which also has a pivotally placed house. Alongside the architecture, duality and division are key elements of the specifically Southern Gothic. Devoid of grand or dilapidated (under the weight of heavy history) architecture of the American south in my current location, I came across this waterside structure the other day, which brought Cormac McCarthy's semi-autobiographical novel 'Suttree' (1979, set in 1950s Tennessee) to mind. According to Willard P. Greenwood, author of 'Reading Cormac McCarthy', the titular Cornelius Suttree "inhabits a simultaneous gothic and comic atmosphere. The poverty, drinking, and homelessness provide the gothic sensibility..." I find it interesting that a subgenre which begins with the literal fall of a family home, and all that that symbolises, is exploring homelessness by the middle of the next century. The varied experiences of homelessness are explored in Suttree, Harrogate, and Michael "the Indian". The role of the house remains pivotal; its absence in McCarthy transcends the gothic beyond loss of wealth and family to the tumultuous lack of basic security. Greenwood is right; 'Suttree' is many things. It is deep, poetic, utterly depressing, infurtiating, continually comical, and, as a result, undeniably gothic. . #suttree #cormacmccarthy #southerngothic #southernspell #bookstagram #bookworm #bookreview #bookish #americangothic #southern #gothicnovel #americanfiction #spookynerd #academic #englishliterature #americanloliterature #gothicgenre #poe #edgarallanpoe https://www.instagram.com/p/CCjmabFAj1F/?igshid=h0wlqrexqphu

We know it is gothic because it is Poe's, but he gives us clues nonetheless. "Peculiar sounds," "horror," "terror," "fear," & "unnatural sensations" are all apparent in a single glance. At its centre is a "mansion of gloom" with a "Gothic archway" &"a family evil" - familiar tropes of the gothic mode, made so, in part, by his very hand. Leaving them there, this is where we fall under the ๐Ÿฅ€Southern Spell๐Ÿฅ€. There is an argument the Southern Gothic as setting alone. ๐Ÿค” Do you agree? There is another stronger argument, I believe, for the presence of particular aspects, related undeniably to place, yet more than simply 'setting'; uniquely southern themes. Decline is a major theme in 'The Fall...'; the house exposes "a wild inconsistency between its still perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the individual stones." These "crumbling individual stones" are: mental well-being | the individual the Usher bloodline | the familial the South | the collective. Nothing ever is in the [capitalised or not?] gothic [genre... or mode?]! The evolution of the Southern Gothic is something I'll be exploring throughout the month, with the help of texts like these. For now, I will offer the following quote, which begins to identify the significance of place within the Southern Gothic: "The American Gothic is most recognisable as a regional form. Identified with gothic doom and gloom, the American South serves as the nation's 'other', becoming the repository for everything from which the nation wishes to dissociate itself. The benighted South is able to support the irrational impulses of the gothic that the nation as a whole, born of Enlightenment ideals, cannot." - Teresa Goddu ๐Ÿค”: Where do you turn to for genre definitions? Though he lived & wrote in the American south, Edgar Allan Poe can't exactly be referred to as a Southern Gothic author because the subgenre didn't exist until American novelist Ellen Glasgow (1873 - 1945) created the term to critically describe "the inflamed rabble of impulses in the contemporary Southern novelโ€ ('Heroes and Monsters', in 'The Saturday Review', May 4th 1953) in the mid C20th - but he still is. Early signs of the genre appear in Poe's work, such as 'The Fall of the House of Usher' (1839) & 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket' (1838). Perhaps, then, it would be better to refer to him as a precursor and credit his work as an influence upon the later occuring Southern Gothic of the mid-1900s. William Moss suggests that "on the ruins of the house of Usher, Poe lays the foundations of a Southern Gothic" - this, I think, is an accurate assertion. What do you think: is Poe the first author of the Southern Gothic, or a strong influence upon a future genre? ๐Ÿ“Œ: This beautiful pin is from the Gothic Literature Collection by @litemporium. Based on Davis Grubb's 1953 novel* of the same name, 'The Night of the Hunter' (dir. Charles Laughton,1955) is presented as the benchmark against which all others follow in the BFI's '10 Great Southern Gothic Films' list. Article-author Samuel Wigley writes: "Over time, there have been awkward attempts to purloin Charles Laughtonโ€™s singular thriller 'The Night of the Hunter' (1955) for the canon of film noir. But anyone who sees the great actorโ€™s only film as director knows itโ€™s something more than that โ€“ a battle between good and evil (the latter incarnated by Robert Mitchumโ€™s fearsome Harry Powell) writ large across Depression-era West Virginia. A self-styled preacher, with the words โ€˜loveโ€™ and โ€˜hateโ€™ tattooed across his knuckles, Powell is an archetypal figure in southern gothic cinema: a man who has twisted religion to his own perverted ends." ๐Ÿค”: The film has an impressive 99% on Rotten Tomatoes & is a firm Generally Gothic favourite. Have you seen it? Do you agree with this rating? ๐Ÿ“–: *Another one to add to the to-read pile! ๐Ÿ“ธ: 'The Night of the Hunter', Charles Laughton, 1955. . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #thenightofthehunter #davisgrubb #charleslaughton #robertmitchum #rottentomatoes #99percent #toread #toberead #blackandwhite #blackandwhitefilm #southerngothic #southerngothicnovel #southerngothicfilm #bfi #britishfilminstitute #filmtheory #filmcritic #film #thriller #filmnoir #westvirginia #depressionera #depression #thegreatdepression #religion #preacherman #filmadaptation https://www.instagram.com/p/B0gr8fKAj-G/?igshid=1680w2ow8ahcg

In The New York Times Book Review, Richard Bernstein referred to Williams Gay's 2006 novel 'Twilight' (no relation to the sparkly vampires) as: "almost textbook Southern Gothic, with its elements of the grotesque, it's psychological extremes and its fixation on violence and sex." High praise indeed! Not only was this Faber and Faber copy of Gay's posthumously published 'Little Sister Death' (2015) more photogenic than any covers of 'Twilight', it's also been on my 'to-read' list for ages. ๐Ÿค”: So, I turn to you. Have any of you read it? Would you recommend I get it, immediately?! ๐Ÿ‘‰: This post follows on from yesterday's ๐Ÿฅ€Southern Spell๐Ÿฅ€ post, which introduced Southern Gothic author, William Gay. American author, William Elbert Gay, served in the navy during the Vietnam War and spent much of his life working as a tradesman. Despite writing since his teens - and continually submitting his work for publication - he did not truly begin his professional writing career until he was in his 50s. By this point he had returned to Tennessee, where he was born in 1941, would later die in 2012, and his narratives are largely set. In continually returning to the same realistic yet fictional, mid-century southern location, the comparisons to William Faulkner begin. Gay himself also credited Flannery O'Connor and Cormac McCarthy as influences. ๐Ÿ‘‰: Check stories for more on the 3 other referenced authors. ๐Ÿ‘‰: And come back tomorrow for more on Gay himself. . #generallygothic #gothic #southernspell #southerngothicnovel #southerngothic #williamgay #williamelbertgay #williamfaulkner #flanneryoconnor #cormacmccarthy #gothicauthor #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #graveyard #cemetery #tennessee #southernamerica #southernstates #americanauthor #americannovel #americanfiction #books #bookstagram #trees #academic #bookworm #booksbooksbooks #vietnamwar #booklover #literature https://www.instagram.com/p/B0cuKctgujE/?igshid=1ih49yg11xzpk
