Stupid Names: Rain Code Edition (Vol. I?)

I gotta say, I do appreciate that the Rain Code characters’ naming keeps the DanRon sensibilities, but formats them in a Western enough way that I can finally point to something to get people to understand the specific kind of stupid that DR names evoke.

Up until now, the closest I could get was the Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney series, but in those games the names are extremely on the nose, where as DanRon is a tiny bit more subtle.

Like all of these characters’ dumb, dumb names sound hit the ear just the same way as most DR characters’ do to someone who knows Japanese. Aside from a few extra tidbits here and there, I’ll mostly let you guys soak in how dumb the names are this time and do quick intros for the characters.

First up, we’ve got our crew of detectives with their special talents. (Why is special backwards? Does that mean something?) They’re all dispatched out to the Kanai Ward, where the game takes place.

Desuhiko Thunderbolt

Special Skill: Disguise

Okay so I have to assume that the “desu” here is evoking “death” and not the meme about the part of speech, but you never know. The “-hiko” ending is, as you may know, a common boys’ name suffix. This is our womanizer character, who also wants to become a famous detective. He’s always carrying his giant backpack full of disguises, like a horny little happy mask salesman.

Also, reading the notes about how he can change not just his face and clothes, but his height, voice, and body type is making me laugh, because they really just made a More OP Sagishi, didn’t they?

Aphex Logan

Special Skill: Detecting Life

A veritable Seer of Life, here. Can sense and pinpoint the location of any living thing within a 50 meter radius. His posture, backstory, and overall vibe say yanki tough guy (after his lawyer parents died, he grew up in the slums), but that hat/mask thing kinda says New Japan Wrestling, so now I’m wondering if his last name is a reference to one half of the internet’s shittiest brothers. It does say he tends to solve things with violence.

Zange Eraser

Special Skill: Thoughtography

I want the last name to be a pun on eraser + razor so bad. I mean, the “zan” in the first name could refer to slicing with a sword, so it’d be so good! Oh well. In Japanese, “erasing” is slang for killing someone, in the same vein as “rubbin’ him out” kind of Looney Toons mobster talk. This older guy has the vibe of a seasoned warrior, and never speaks about his past. However, since he sometimes refers to himself as a “former official”, it’s possible he may be an ex-govt employee. His ability is that he can project his own memories as images onto digital devices, so I’m not sure what the pole is for. Selfie stick?

Zilch Alexander 

Special Skill: Animal Puppetry

Being able to control animals is cool, I guess, but man this is a really good example of DR’s trademark “One Normal Name + One Really Stupid Name” principle in action. 

Anyway, Zilch here loves the harmony between man and nature, and so he specializes in things that blend the two (i.e., animals). He has tendency to overtake conversations in order to make sure things proceed optimally, which gives off the impression to others that he thinks he’s better than everyone else. But hey, nobody’s perfect.

What an amazing character design. Love these animals’ poses and expressions, too. No notes.

Vivia Twilight

Special Skill: Separating Spirit from Body

Despite the name sounding like someone’s MLP OC, this little twink can yeet his soul out of his body to become invisible and not let walls or floors stand in his way. This name is so good, damn. 

Vivia is one of those people with aesthetic, decadent kinda vibes. You know the ones. He’s got a self-indulgent type of personality, and you can often find him sleeping under the agency’s heater or beneath a hotel grand piano or whatever.

This is 100% the fanbait character.

Pucci Lavmin (Pucchi Ravmin)

Special Skill: Super Hearing

She may look like a little kid, but beneath her petite exterior lies machine-like serenity and intellect. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t get to talk to other people much, but she has a habit of unexpected responses or emotional outbursts in conversation. Guess she took the touching grass thing prescriptively?

Her skill seems a bit underwhelming considering we have a guy who can shapeshift and one who can re-enact that Pokemon Tower anime episode at will, but what do I know. I guess there’s lots of good practical applications to this one, which they point out, like listening in on conversations or for footsteps and stuff.

Harara Nightmare (Halala Nightmare)

Special Skill: Past Vision

Oh sure, don’t give me any direction on the romanization for this one, thanks. Also, why are both detectives on this page voiced by someone named Yui, written the same exact way? Weird. Anyway, excellent name, love it. Hindsight is always 20/20, and imagine if you could look back at actual 2020? Nightmare, right?

Harara/Halala always keeps a cool head and is able to make very precise deductions, so they’re a veteran of plenty of tough cases. That said, they trust nothing more than money, and won’t take on any clients that don’t offer sufficient compensation for their skills.

Fubuki Clockford (possibly Crockford, but come on)

Special Skill: Rewinding Time

This one is my favorite name. As you may or may not know, “fubuki” means blizzard but is also a common girl’s name, but that’s not what makes it wonderful. The real star of the show is the meaningful last name that also sounds like a background character in Illbleed.

Good news: this Knight of Time’s powers aren’t busted, because you can only go back once, and after that you can’t use the power again until more time has passed. 

Fubuki herself is an illustrious daughter of the noble Clockford family, and hasn’t had a lot of opportunities to interact with the normal, everyday world. As such, she’s got some unique views on things, and she’s often causing issues for people by marching to the beat of her own drum. She’s also got a bad tendency to drop conversations, which doesn’t help.

Melami Goldmine (Merami Goldmine)

Special Skill: Necromancy

This is another great name, because this one seems to hint at an avaricious nature, rather than being a direct reference to her talent. (Unless of course this is also a Zombieya no Reiko reference in which case, WOW.) She can raise the spirits of the dead for a price, but only if she’s wearing something the deceased wore in life.

Melami likes clothes, and people who'd look good in clothes she likes.

I... Okay, sure.

Yakou Furio

Role: Head of the Yakou (Midnight Service) Detective Agency

Not one of the Super Detectives (or Great Detectives? I haven’t kept up with the direction the loc is going), but still an accomplished sleuth recognized by the International Detectives Organization (World Detectives Organization? This might be a WHO reference). Presumably the founder of the agency, he’s also the only office staff, and everybody’s boss. Despite running the agency, he tries to keep operations on the downlow to avoid dealing with the Amaterasu Co. Security Dept. He’s known for his timid demeanor, but his name belies fiery rage (”yakou” can also mean “let’s burn”).

Yomii Hellsmile

Role: Head of Amaterasu Co.’s Security Dept

This is simultaneously a floor master from Kimi ga Shine (name, personality) and our Junko (personality, presence in a Kodaka game). He’s young but delights in the misfortune of others, crushes people with a serene demeaner, and uses his underlings just to toss them aside after. He rules Kanai Ward, and uses that achievement to broker influence within the Amaterasu Mega Company. (Wasn’t the big evil company in Enen no Shouboutai called Amaterasu too?) 

Also, I revise my earlier statement, this may very well end up being the fanbait character...

Suwaro Electro

Role: Vice Head of Amaterasu Co.’s Security Dept

Meanwhile this character design is one that speaks to my heart. The first name kinda sounds like both the imperative order “sit!” and the English word “swallow”, while the last name just sounds like a C Tier comic book character. This is Yomii’s right hand woman, who is the beneficiary of his sprinklings of trust and love, and she thinks very highly of herself. She normally has zero mercy for those who oppose her but makes an exception to be a loyal lackey for Yomii, making her sorta like this game’s Mukuro. I hope she’s just as fail and tragic as my beloved Corpsey.

Then there’s these weirdos who work in the Amaterasu Co. Security Dept:

This rejected Persona enemy is Spank Cassanero, and he likes money.

I’m guessing at how to transliterate this name, since it could also be Spunk, and the last name could be a little different. Seemed like it was going for Italian to me, I dunno.

Next, the bullybait looking person is Seth Brows(e), the head of the security department’s investigation team. He speaks so softly that he needs a megaphone to help him project. He’s pretty subdued when he speaks, which makes him come across as kind of sickly.

The third-string Vtuber is called Gyoumu Hall, which is a classic stupid Japanese name, where you use the Western surname to just call a character “conference hall”. The leader of the security department’s Anti-Terrorist Unit, she talks fast, is rather animated, and uses the first person pronoun “this” (kore).

Finally, we have this 6′6″ fellow known as Dominic Fulltank. How apt. He sure looks like a Dominic, doesn’t he? He’s the vice head of the Anti-Terorrist Unit. He’s totally loyal to Gyoumu, though sometimes struggles to carry out more complicated orders.

...Some of these characters have unfortunate optics, man.

Games, anime, comics, mangas and shit tons of other things. You name it, they will never shut up. They are nerds and their teammates will look at them with absolute adoration despite being confused af.

And anyone talk shit about those two, count your days and be prepared to have unhinged elite military spec op and naval pilots come after their ass.

Spec Ops: The Line is actually one of the best crafted ludonarrative satires to exist. It uses the medium of a modern military cover based shooter game to criticize imperialist militaries, military propaganda, *the game genre that it's a part of, the players who choose to enjoy that genre and the producers of them*. Narratively it's an adaption of Heart of Darkness, substituting the 19th century colonialism Jozef Konrad was condemning with present-day War on Terror imperialism. It was briefly a critical darling right before Gamergate ruined critical analysis of games for another hundred years, especially in the context of the ever-memed-on Ludonarrative Dissonance discussion. Primarily because it used ludonarrative dissonance as a satirical tool to examine the glorifying milprop aspects of its contemporaries.

So naturally is was a commercial failure and the studio that made it was shuttered.

So it was kind of weird that the military had a quarantine barrier strong enough to contain Program-enhanced Wonder Effects, Guardian Commands, and whatever Wonder Showtime might have been throwing at it before Marggy came into play, right? I mean, usually it's just the villains that have tech on that level.

Well, that's kind of the point. For far too long the universe has had to rely on scrappy heroes, divine intervention, and plain old dumb luck to fend off near-constant end-of-the-world scenarios, both from local troublemakers and from the various Programs, Viruses, and other Code Entities who happen to have beef with this particular server for whatever reason. Well, Emulator got sick of her NPCs being helpless in the face of all this chaos, especially considering the likes of TV Adware and Mr. L are already ahead of the game, so she decided to level the playing field.

For a while now, she and Lag (with support from the rest of the main Admins) have been collaborating with the Mushroom Kingdom military and Haltmann Works Company, as well as a few other tech-savvy groups in the other SMG Universes (or at least the ones where the SMG stuff is public knowledge) to create their own Code-Level defenses. The quarantine shield was one of the first things created from the project, reverse-engineered from One-Shot Wren's anti-admin signal blocker tech, which was initially recovered from the wreckage of his hideout and locked away by the Admins, and then eventually given to the military when the project began.

They're also working on stabilizers like the one Blotch has, as well as weapon, armor and vehicle designs, most notably Code Ships based on the Guardian Pods' ship forms (the ones seen in the Revelations Arc). Currently they're in the prototype stage for the ships, just retrofitting HWC ships to be able to withstand High-Density Internet Travel, but ships specifically designed for that are coming soon if all goes well. Both smaller transport ships, and larger vessels specced for long voyages, exploration, emergency rescue/evacuation, or yes, even combat. They're also working on something no one's figured out before; developing technology that can purify Anti-Meme energy by studying Hex and Vee's purification abilities and the jury-rigged code fixed on their pod that gave them said abilities in the first place. (just because Susie figured out how to fix that shard's garbled broken mess of code doesn't mean she knows exactly what part of that repair job gave her kids OP healing magic)

Actually, part of why Susie was out of town during the Wonder Arc was so she could check on how certain aspects of the project were progressing at her other facilities. For the most part things were running smoothly, but there was a break-in at their Port Aurora branch. Nothing irreplaceable was stolen at least, but the thief managed to decrypt and copy all files related to the HMG project.

You can probably guess who it was.

WIP Tag meme

So, Sam and Kaidan's moonlit walk-and talk where Sam talks about his dad was the first part of Your Mess Is Mine to exist, and it was written eons before the rest of the story. And when I wrote it, I doodled this first kiss AU, because...well, I wanted to, lol, but when the rest of the story got written, I thought Let the Walls Cave In was stronger, so this one got stuck in a drawer.

I liked it enough, though, that I held onto it.

Shepard taps the branch with his fingers. “He wanted to take me to Earth. Show me where humanity came from. I wasn’t interested. Couldn’t understand why he wanted to look back when everything was out there.” He gestures up at the sky. “So we never went. There was so much he wanted to teach me, and I blew him off because he worked a desk job while my mom flew a starship, and what could I possibly learn from him?”

The bitterness in his voice cuts like a knife. He scrubs the back of his hand across the corner of his eye.

“I always saw him as an anchor. I wanted to be like my mother, not like him. My mother was the hero, the person everyone looked up to and respected. Including me. Took me too long to realize that respect and love were two very different things.”

“She’s your mother. It’s not something you should have had to learn from her.”

He shakes his head. “She’s not my mother. She’s a superior officer. Always has been, and nothing I do will ever change it. It took losing my father to figure that out. I was so stupid.”

“No, you weren’t,” Kaidan insists. “You were a kid.”

Shepard huffs. “I thought so much of her, and so little of him. Until Anderson gave me a copy of his service record after he disappeared. I’d never even thought to look at it before. Do you know what I found?”

Kaidan shakes his head, heart aching.

“He was N1. He and Anderson did ICT together. His proficiency scores were better than Anderson’s. He had an invitation to go back to the Villa for N2.”

“Why didn’t he take it?”

“Because of me,” Shepard says, voice breaking. “He gave up spec ops and requested a posting on Arcturus to raise me. I took that from him.”

“Doesn’t sound to me like you took anything. He chose you.”

And your mother didn’t.

“And look how I repaid him.”

Kaidan takes a step closer. Their biotic fields mingle with a hum. “I’m willing to bet he didn’t see it as a debt.”

“I guess I’ll never know, will I?”

And you’ve spent over ten years trying to repay it anyway, haven’t you? To Shepard, everything comes down to what pieces of himself he can carve off for others. How, why, can’t he see himself as anything other than a transaction?

Shepard turns away to head back towards the path, but Kaidan reaches out and grabs for his hand. Later, he’ll think about how seamlessly their fingers lace, like they’ve done it their whole lives instead of for the first time. But now, there’s no time to think. He pulls Shepard to him, hooks his other hand around Shepard’s neck and kisses him.

It’s easy. Effortless. Just like breathing. Not something he has to think about, control, figure out. His lips on Shepard’s just is, soft and warm and full of hope, like some crucial missing part of him has just snapped into place.

When they part, Shepard blinks, an almost curious look in his eyes. Curious, but not surprised, not dismayed, even though Kaidan’s heart is beating so loud Shepard has to hear it. Kaidan doesn’t let go of his hand and still cups the back of his neck, and Shepard doesn’t pull away.

“I wish you could see yourself the way I see you,” Kaidan murmurs.

Shepard searches his face some more, like he’s looking at Kaidan for the first time, before reaching up with the hand not clasped in Kaidan’s to stroke his cheek, curiosity melting into wonder.

“What do you see?” he asks, voice soft.

The answer falls out of his mouth before his brain has time to think about it. “Infinity.”

Shepard’s thumb strokes his jaw, and then nothing else matters because Shepard kisses him back.

Last First Monday of the Week Year 2023-01-02

it's that time again

Listening: Bought an Apple USB-C DAC so relistening to songs I know well for reference. One being Bad Religion's Let Them Eat War.

Bad Religion's bit gets me every time. Yeah he's. A PhD evolutionary biologist who does the militant atheist meme irl. Perfect band no notes.

Reading: In search of an entirety different blog post I did not find, The Alexandrian's GM Don't List. It's a good list, not really groundbreaking advice but good things to rein in some bad habits you may have developed at other people's tables and sensible reasons why you should avoid them.

A lot of these are just urgings to be consistent and predictable but that's so important at a table, nothing is worse for players than having a plan go awry even though the rules say it should work.

Watching: Knives Out: Glass Onion, which was great. It's really cool that it is actually basically the same overall setup in the abstract as Knives Out: Donut Hole but still a totally novel and interesting story.

Playing: Started and finished the Titanfall 2 Campaign over the new year. I like first person shooters in theory but many, many of them do not do it for me, I still haven't finished Spec Ops: The Line. Titanfall is fast paced and has the right level of "You're in a bad situation, what do you do, now quickly think!" that I like from first person shooters in particular and more generally from video games.

Frantic snap decisions are usually a terrible idea in real life but they're a lot of fun, and you feel good when they work out. Ping-ponging off walls and firing shots off only to land in the middle of a cluster of enemies, dropping a grenade and activating your invisibility power to escape is great. Movement is super good, albeit a little unpredictable as to when you're going to stick to a wall rather than swing past it to your death.

Making: I have done nothing but sew quilt patches for three days. Cut what will hopefully be the last batch of patches from the roll, it looks like I'm probably going to contribute about ⅓ of this quilt with my mother making up the other ⅔.

Tools and Equipment: The templates for cutting and marking seams on the quilt patches were originally printed, and they're worn down to the point of uselessness. Rather than running around to a printshop, I made the new ones by just drawing it by hand, so here's to a robust set of geometric tools. With a couple set squares, a protractor, a compass, and a good ruler you can do an awful lot of constructions very accurately. In particular constructing parallel lines with two set squares came in handy here for drawing the rhombuses.

RP PET PEEVE : I have a few different ones but my main 2 are probably having your entire character revolve around shipping and also having a stupidly powerful character and then just. Not elaborating at all. I've been in groups where the entire theme is MURDER and HORROR and yet they spend the whole time making out and ignoring any plot hooks. I've also seen characters who can apparently take on gods or have ridiculous powers but that whole backstory is ignored, never used or has no depth to it. Like if they're an all powerful god, what does their role involve? What are their worshippers like? What's their influence in the world? There's no point having an OP character if all you use them for is to flirt around or just have an excuse to counter everything against them so they never show weakness.

PLOTS OR MEMES : I Memes are easier for me to answer quickly, but I'm a huge sucker for plots. Even if we never get around to writing them properly, I love throwing around ideas or blabbing on about stupid scenarios or AUs or relationships AAA. Sometimes I'll spend more time talking about a reply than I will actually replying BYE

LONG OR SHORT REPLIES : Long replies! Short are fine for memes but I feel like they can go nowhere at times. I like adding detail since it's more fun for me and I feel like it just makes things flow on a lot nicer.

ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSES : Oh To a small extent. I have a few similair interests to Specs and Jack, but personality wise they're different. Especially Specs. Extroverts lowkey scare me so the only time I come off that fucking crazy is online OIUHEUH. Hee's someone I'd like to be friends with though. Opposites attract kind of situation.

For the most part, a lot of my ocs kind of spring from personal experiences though. Jack was a way to kind of process my own situation. At times Specs is a bit of a vent character, but also just kind of a comfort character to help me through it. Alistair is a stand in for people I despise and sort of acts like a punching bag (though I haven't written him in ages for personal reasons lol) and characters like Lust, Dorian and William are kind of based around me as a person. All in all, I love most of my muses and oc (through they are on thin ice lol). If they were real I'd like to get to meet some of them one day.

-the two of them would be joined by Silverclaw on their next mission, where they would be teaming up with Jazz’s crew

-immediately, Jazz and his crew knew something wasn’t right, but they didn’t have time to act on their suspicions

-on the mission, the CO ended up causing noise, breaking their cover

-as the Decepticons fired upon them, Silverclaw grabbed Flutter, who was closest, and used her as a shield

-she died immediately, and Breach, who witnessed what just happened, lost it

-they let their SpecOps coding take control, and killed every ‘con in the room before putting Silverclaw in a chokehold

*in my headcanon, inspired from fics, SpecOps mechs sometimes have to adapt, download, play, and fake different mindsets and other stuff in order to complete a job; when on a job, SpecOps are trained to focus on the job only, nothing else (essentially, they are guided by high stake survival instincts; this makes them very dangerous after missions, and are required to be subdued and taken care of as they come back to a clearer state of mind)*

-Breach, running on these instincts coupled with the loyalty to Flutter and hatred for their CO, tries to kill him

-Jazz quickly intervenes, forcing Breach into a shutdown, while Bumblebee and Mirage arrest Silverclaw

-ever since, Jazz and his team work with Breach, who eventually relearns to trust authority

-the team grows a strong bond, becoming one big family

-Breach is still sad about Flutter
