Have you ever seen the Spectacled Eider (Somateria fischeri)? During breeding season, males sport green plumage in a pattern that's reminiscent of glasses. While this doesn't make their vision sharper, it does help males stand out from the crowd. For the rest of the year, they revert to mottled-brown plumage, similar to females, which have more subdued spectacles year-round. This duck is unique in that it lives in the frigid high Arctic. It sustains itself on a diet of mostly mollusks and crustaceans, diving to pluck prey from the ocean floor.

The Spectacled Eider is sexually dimorphic, meaning the males look different from the females. Males are black underneath with white backs and pale green heads. They have large white “spectacles” around their eyes and an orange bill that is partially covered by the feathers on their face. Their North American range is mostly restricted to coastal areas of Alaska, where they can be found during the breeding season.

The Long-tailed Duck is sexually dimorphic, meaning the males look different from the females. The species is named for the incredibly long tail feathers sported by the males. Males are patterned in dark brown and white, but their pattern changes throughout the year, with distinct summer and winter plumages. They are a sea duck and typically spend their winters in saltwater. Notably, quite a few of these birds also overwinter in Toronto, which is the largest urban centre in Canada.

The king eider (pronounced /ˈaɪ.dər/) (Somateria spectabilis) is a large sea duck that breeds along Northern Hemisphere Arctic coasts of northeast Europe, North America and Asia. The birds spend most of the year in coastal marine ecosystems at high latitudes, and migrate to Arctic tundra to breed in June and July. They lay four to seven eggs in a scrape on the ground lined with grass and down.

The Snow Goose is not sexually dimorphic, which means males and females look the same. They have two main colour morphs. White morph geese are white all over with black wing tips, while blue morph geese are dark brown, with white heads and some white on the wings and underside. Snow geese migrate in huge flocks that form V formations as they fly, which allows geese further back in the flock to experience less drag and therefore expend less energy.
