Hello everyone! And by that I mean those who've followed me over from Twitter and those who bought something from me at a convention or my Etsy.

I changed my URL here! After about 10 years of going by barriersurge everywhere, I felt it was time for a change for many reasons. I made a more in-depth post over on my blog, which I've linked below. I will still continue to hoard this URL/Username for as long as I can, considering how long I've used it, and am in the process of changing usernames on other social media websites and making things redirect accordingly.

"Unsanctioned" background introductions

As I get closer to finishing the editing of the three backgrounds available for the MC, I've finally managed to put together a short summary of each one. Alternative, shorter versions of these summaries will be included the game for the player to read over before committing to a background.

These include light spoilers, so I'll post them under the cut in case you'd rather skip it!

The Aristocrat

As devout and loyal servants to the city of Dust and Gold, the Belnac name has remained untainted and unsoiled in the eyes of the public and would remain so still if not for the calamity that happened a century ago.

Among the elite, the sins of your family are nothing more than a shared, painful memory.  A sin many of the aristocracy bear, but no one bears to speak out loud.

But the past is the past, and the future of your house is looking bright. With your older brother Cassius already a Spellweaver, hopes for the youngest Belnac to follow in his footsteps are high.

On the eve of your ninth birthday, seated among the most distinguished subjects of the Crown, your parents announce their plans to send you to the Institute of Arcane Arts, mapping out your future with one ceremonious toast.

How you feel about the matter is a secondary concern when faced with tradition and expectation, but you have witnessed what the favourable gaze of the One can do to a person, and it has left you wondering about, perhaps even fearing, the unspoken horrors of that gaze.

The Scavenger

You’ve worked as a treasure hunter – a glorified scavenger – for near three years, serving a vital role in the group of misfits known in Talzaric’s less prosperous areas as the “Finders”.

With your unreliable line of work and general circumstances, you had never expected a mysterious, wealthy client to contact your group for a very special job: locating the Remnant of a sorcerer long since dead.

In over your heads but beckoned by the promise of riches, you set out on one last journey together and make your way to the treacherous Grimhills to locate the relic and bring it back to the capital. But the promise of gold births greed, and when ensnared in a web of scheming witches, so too does fear risk breaking the bonds of once sworn friends.

The Nomad

okay, so basically, what happened is I was looking back through the Scarlet Witch tag on @why-i-love-comics and I saw this panel:

and I was INSPIRED. the expression was just sooooo tasty that I had to try it out with my own Wanda :D

I also decided to use this piece as an opportunity to imitate the work of @romyjones, specifically her rendering style. she's a big art inspiration for me, and definitely one of my favorite artists in general!! I looove the way she mixes hard and soft edges (it's a thing I'm trying to improve on in my own work), and there's this thing she does with shading where she kinda changes the hue to blue-green in the very darkest areas that I wanted to try out for myself, haha. I am also in LOVE with the way she draws and renders hair—it looks so soft and sooooo good—so I decided to take cues from her work there as well. seriously, go follow her, her work is lovely!! 10/10 would recommend :)

I spent a lot of time working on a Dragon Age Origins romance fic for Teagan and my Surana, Ysmeria, from 2021 through 2022. Since there are a lot of posts containing art, fic and headcanons, I've decided to compile them all here so they're easier to find and read in order. Ultimate goal is to eventually post the fic with images to ao3. This post will remain a WIP and I'll continue to update as I post new art and fic. I'M GONNA BE REAL I DIDN'T THINK THIS AT ALL LMAO. I got SOMETHING down now, but like. in my mind despite the plan being for the Winx graduating at the end of AUS8 I completely forgot that they WOULD have some sort of the degree. So. I thought of some!

Alfea offers 8 main careers in its curriculum - Herbalist, Oracle, Artificer, Combatant, High Healer, Diplomatic Magic, Magic Crafting and Spellweaver. Herbalist covers anything related to magical flora and its properties. Oracle is divided in 3 branches (Earth Oracle, divination using objects; Sky Oracle, divination using the elements as they exist in nature as well as the sky itself; Horizon Oracle, a mix of both). Artificer is the engineering branch more or less. Combatant is for the fairies that didn't feel like enrolling in RF but DID want to learn to use swords and guns. High Healer is the medicine branch essentially, but also covers veterinary (for Magic Animals). Diplomatic Magic is more or less forced on nobility since it relates to politics and stuff. Magic Crafting is the arts department. Spellweaver is the literature department, designed to preserve and document spells and the like.

AS FOR YOUR ACTUAL QUESTION AND IT'S UNDER A READMORE BECAUSE THIS IS LONG ENOUGH ALREADY:

Bloom - in the first year she's undecided, after S1 she goes for Combatant and Diplomatic Magic (not like she had a choice)

Stella - Horizon Oracle, Magic Crafting (her fashion studies), Diplomatic Magic

Aisha - Artificer (while morphix doesn't exist in the AU she still does something similar with her water powers and DuFour gently nudged her during the first year to pursue it), Diplomatic Magic

Flora - Herbalist (she doesn't really NEED it, but it grants her access to rarer plants), Combatant and High Healer (Potionology is mixing High Healer and Herbalist more or less)

Tecna - Artificer and Magic Crafting

Creature-less Kess Storm (50$ budget)

EDH can be quite expensive so let's go ahead and make a budget deck that can be easily upgraded down the road.

I did cheat a bit on the price and ended up with a deck that's worth 50.56$, so I didn't really hit the 50$ price goal but it was close enough.

The idea is quite simple: storm off using Thousand-Year Storm and use proliferate to kill with Infect.

Proliferate is also used to boost the mana production, so yes, those old janky Storage Land and Depletion Land find a home in this deck.

Kess herself does bring a lot to the table as well; being able to recast things like Mana Geyser, Brass Bounty, or just another tutor helps quite a bit.

In terms of upgrading, it's really simple. Better tutor, better draw, Inexorable Tides (I totally didn't realize that was a 20-dollar card now), better mana base, better mana generation (when did Cabal Ritual jump to 10 dollars?), or planeswalkers to benefit from proliferate.

In terms of blingability (totally not a made-up word), you have quite a lot of options. A lot of those cards have either extended art or an alternate design. So if you want to have a non-budget budget deck, this deck can fill that niche quite easily.

If you can't win via infect due to something preventing the poison counter, you always have the option of winning with their deck (Fevered Suspicion), throwing treasure at their face (Rise and Shine), or making them draw cards (Sign in Blood, Caress of Phyrexia).

I played it for a couple of matches at my LGS, and I was surprised by it. If you manage to untap with Thousand-Year Storm and a couple of draw spells, it's quite impressive how far you can go. A couple of cards can help with the storm counter if Thousand-Year storm is not on the field (Arcane melee, Mindsplice Aparatus, The Mirari Conjecture, and Spellweaver Volute (a pet card of mine)). Funny enough, even with people trying to destroy enchantments, you can go off of with instant speed spell quite well (thank you, Frantic Search, and your untap).

So I hope you liked this small deck, and I will try to post more decks in the future (I have a couple brewing, waiting for cards so that I can sleeve them up and test them at my LGS).

But the tone Heysel uses in her invitation seems so certain, so casual, hardly the sole product of a ploy. And as bizarre as her sense of humor appears to him at times, it doesn’t seem like her to send him on a fight with such steep handicap.

It could be a matter of regional difference. The philosophy and handling of weaponry follows separate principles in the many places of the world, as do the disciplines of witches and spellweavers around the land, inventing vastly different arts from shared sources. The same must surely be true for competitions.

Still Cayin’s look is one of uncertainty, as he gazes down at his wear clutching it tightly. “Is it wise to show our skill to a public like that?” Someone whose profession naturally invites secretism must know what he means. The known attack is more likely to find its counter than the one kept secret.

But that is only half his concern. It is one thing for Heysel to witness up close what is covered under sleeves so long, to know the road he walks and much of what it entails. But to display in a spectacle what he otherwise keeps secret however he can? A means of growth deemed vile by some, and appetizing to others who would surely be gleeful to gain a headstart by carving the strength out of his bare chest with a bloody knife? This ‘warrior’s code’ that maintains the order of this controlled conflict, this peculiar etiquette he doesn’t fully understand in a life that spares no food or time to its savage children, looks to be a fragile thing in his eyes. Too unreliable.

Ahhh, Val! 💕🫂 Thank you so much for this! I tend to be really bad about liking most of my work shortly after it's posted but I do have to admit there are some artworks and writing that I look back on fondly.

You know the current love of my life is Hellendil and I still enjoy creating with him, fic, RP and art. This is still one of my favorite renders of him and it was one I didn't think would turn out at all when I did it!

Golden Hour Hellendil

Why is it all the unplanned experimental ones that I like best? This HP Lovecraft inspired render has gotten no attention at all, but I really love how it turned out. It was just a simple scene I set up to test the rendering capability of my laptop, but It's probably one of my favorite lighting setups that I've ever done. This one needs a full view to really appreciate the fine details.

The Shining Trapezohedron

Probably my favorite writing work I've done to date has been my Dragon Age fic featuring Ysmeria Surana and Bann Teagan. I was writing this fic while my fellow Teagan-mancer, @fantasy-art-room, was writing hers and it was so fun to just feed off each others energy! The first part of the fic is at 27 pages, 14k words and that is not counting the little one shots/prompts/snippets that I haven't merged into the main file.
