how about a pacific spiny lumpsucker :)
Today on CHUNK! FUNK! GUNK! We rate
the PACIFIC SPINY LUMPSUCKER:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5/10 Chunk
10/10 Funk
9/10 Gunk
Once again we come across a creature I had never heard of before today. Apparently they’re very bony, but since they have such a square shape to them I give them a little chunk. They have a very very funky look and a strange gimmick, high funk. These fish are also very slimy (as found in my brief googling of them), high gunk.
Overall: 9/10
Its eyes are so full of hope. Its mouth is always agape in a state of wonder. Its tummy goes suck suck.
It is beautiful.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Often hailed as beautiful and powerful, lumpsucker fish have many talents; one important skill they lack, though, is swimming. Lumpsucker bodies are almost perfectly round, which isn't very hydrodynamic. On top of that, they lack a swim bladder-- an organ that other fish use to control their bouyancy. As a result, lumpsuckers spend most of their lives suctioned onto rocks or coral.

Did you know, that like snakes and lizards, most sharks are ectothermic? This means that, normally, they’re not capable of regulating their own body temperature. However, sharks that live in frigid Arctic waters have adapted an ability called counter-current heat exchange. This method of keeping warm, allows these sharks to survive in even the coldest of the world’s oceans.

Another spiny eel video. I'm fascinated by their noses. I didn't know they could move them independently. Like an elephant or tapir.

One of my yellow-tailed spiny eels, macrognathus pancalus. It’s really interesting how they swim, they really don’t move like eels at all (makes sense, since they’re not closely related to true eels)

is it just me or do dogfish kinda look like an animal crossing character
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
no you're so right. dogfish, especially the spiny dogfish, look like some game/cartoon dev was like "we need a SHARK, pronto!! someone draw us a shark!" and they gave the task to some kawaii chibi artist who only ever draws cutesy things and has no idea how to make something look the least bit sleek or intimidating.

not to project my own human assumptions onto a wild animal but they just have such dog energy in their appearance. they look like they would play fetch, and whine when you have to leave for work, and bark at squirrels/seagulls

Spiny red gurnard! (Chelidonichthys spinosus)
Tumblr media
Despite the name, they're typically shades of brown, only displaying red when feeling stressed! Like other sea robins, they have walking rays which they use to walk on the sea floor, as well as large, colourful pectoral fins.
