You can’t just go pop-lock-and-droppin’ it and expect to wake up looking like J-Lo without carefully maintaining CORRECT FORM. (You might end up feeling less like a Kardashian and more like you need a knee replacement…)
This is how to do them the right way 👇
👉 Stand firm with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes pointing a liiittle bit outwards (to keep your knees from going inward)
👉 Put your hands on your hips and keep your shoulders and chest up, gaze in front of you at all times
👉 Start to sit back while keeping the weight evenly distributed in your feet (you should be able to wiggle your toes)
👉 Pull your shoulder blades together and actively push your knees out so they don’t cave in
👉 Once your butt is at least parallel to your knees or closer to the ground, push into your feet and begin to stand up…
🌟 …SQUEEZING that booty on the way up!

I think I need a physiotherapist for my MOBILITY GOALS. Know any? . Swipe to the third (last) video and you will see that I can't squat without falling backwards... unless I have weight in front of me as seen in this first video. If you look closely, all my bodyweight is behind my legs, while someone with flexible ankles has a portion of their weight centered over their legs as they travel downward. . I don't love squatting so I don't care about lifting heavy weight. The problem is that this affects my running. It's something I have to work on if I want to be a 75-year-old granny track star 😀 Apparently if your ankle mobility isn't at least 15 degrees you are at risk of tearing your Achilles. I tore my Soleus. If you run frequently and get burning heels/Achilles you probably need to address your ankles like me (but I'm no expert). . SO.this is the year I actually follow a consistent rehab program so I can sprint safely again and squat without holding any weight, or having elevated heels. . Hey buds I am looking for recommendations of physiotherapists or any professionals (hopefully in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, or Vancouver) who can help me get past this problem. I have been given stretching routines by physio pros before and it helps but I also have scar tissue affecting it. . . On Mondays we squat 💁🏼♀️ Every week I’m working on my barbell squat. I’m determined to hit that 90kg soon, and as soon as that’s accomplished I’m going for 100kg. If you hadn’t noticed I’m planning on making some major leg gains this year 😬 For what it’s worth, I’d say squats and deadlifts are the hardest lifts to master. You have to learn your own body and your own mobility and then work on form before you can really get to work on your strength on them. What works for one person may not work for the next. My best advice is to have patience and stick with it. Only now do I seem to be steadily increasing my weight on squats after several years of not really making much in the way of strength progress with them. Anyone else working on their squats? Lower body stabilization and power exercises!
Lower body exercises are killer! We all know that right? The exhaustion, soreness, and inability to sit in a chair for a few days are just a few of the perks of leg day(I kid I kid) Now I know you are all dying to get an exercise in on this gloomy Monday, so I put together a combination of exercises that focus on lower body stability and power. Perform each exercise for 3 sets of 20 reps. Alternating legs every 10 reps for the exercises that are 1 leg dominant. ps. Don’t hate me after you try it;))
Before you try the exercises featured, I’d like to mention a few pointers about correct form. When performing any of the squat or lunge exercises in this video it is very important to make sure your knees are going straight over your 2nd and 3rd toes as you bend. This keeps they knees from caving in(knee valgus) or falling out. Knee valgus has been associated with increasing the risk of ACL injuries and therefore is very important to avoid. A stance with feet forward, or with a slight degree of external rotation, and approximately hip-shoulder width apart is desired as a wider stance will change the torque about the knee and hips as well as the muscle activity of the lower extremities. Begin to sit back like you are sitting in a chair, all the while keeping knees in line with 2nd and 3rd toes. This alignment is crucial to ensure the use of appropriate prime movers and avoiding injury. I know it is tempting to stand with feet turned out and legs far apart, especially if you have been told this form is correct. This turned out position may feel natural in many because of muscle compensations caused by lack of range of motion in the desired position, causing it to seem easier to squat in this position. However, continuing to squat in this position will not only increase your risk for injury but will not help in correcting compensations and issues that are a result of poor form.

HOW TO:
If your technique is shit, you can bet your ass your body will find ways to compensate/adapt to the dysfunctional movement. To resolve this and squat better, focus on the following tips:
🔹Find your point of true ‘balance’ - shift your body forwards & backwards, sensing how your feet and ankles adapt to the transfer of weight.
🔹After a few repetitions, you will feel your center of gravity set between your forefoot and heel.
🔹As you sit in your deep squat (depth varies between individuals), focus on feeling your glutes, hamstrings and quads turn on to hold you in that static position - Efficient muscle utilization = less shear stress on your joints.
⚠️Ensure you have adequate ankle flexibility/mobility prior to going ‘deep’. _______________________________________________________

‼️FORM IS IMPORTANT‼️ One of my favourite things in this job is helping people correct their form and improving their lifts. When mark started squats he was ass to grass however he was getting knee pains and niggles. Mark is hyper-mobile which means he can get into full depth, except it’s uncontrolled and he’s using that muscle spring back to get from the bottom of the lift. However his ankles aren’t as mobile therefore it was causing his hips to curl under. So by stripping it back, cutting an inch off his depth, sticking some plates under his heels, he is now focusing on his control and contracting the muscles properly. No more knee pain and proper contraction in the leg muscles.
