TIMELINE
18 November: an MSF volunteer and another staff’s family member killed by the Israeli forces
“On 18 of November, the MSF office in Jerusalem obtained the authorisation for us to evacuate from the Gaza office, clinic and guesthouse to the south of the Gaza Strip. We collected our things and everyone got in the cars, ready to go south along Salah al Din Street.”
“We arrived at the checkpoint of Salah al Din Street. street. I was in the fourth van. There were Israeli troops standing there and they asked us to move back to where we came from, because there was no authorisation.”
On 18 November, an MSF convoy of five cars, all clearly identified by MSF logos, left the MSF premises (guesthouse, office, and outpatient clinic) headed to southern Gaza to reach a safer place. Since 11 November, they had been trapped by ongoing fighting around them and since then, MSF had repeatedly called to safely evacuate them.
Tumblr media
The convoy reached the last checkpoint near Wadi Gaza, which was overcrowded at that time due to extensive screening of Palestinians by Israeli forces. Despite the prior authorisation from the Israeli authorities, the convoy wasn’t allowed to cross the checkpoint and was left waiting for hours. Shots were later heard by our staff, who out of fear decided to head back to the MSF premises, around 7 kilometres north of the checkpoint.
“We stayed there around three hours, it was getting dark. Hundreds of people were waiting and some of them decided to head back north because the checkpoint would not let them through. My colleagues in the cars said: ‘Let’s go back, our only shelter is the MSF Gaza office’.We contacted Paul [an MSF colleague in Jerusalem] to inform him that we would head back because we were not allowed to pass the checkpoint. He said he would ask for the authorisation for us to go back.”
On their way back, between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm local time, the convoy was attacked in Al-Wahida street near the junction of Said Al-A’as Street, near the MSF office. Two of the MSF cars were deliberately hit, killing a nurse who volunteered with MSF teams and injuring the family member of another, who later also died from his wound.
“When we arrived in Al Wahida street, which is close to our office and guesthouse and clinic, I saw tanks and snipers at the top of the buildings. I was terrified when I saw that the snipers and the tanks were pointing their weapons at us, especially at the fourth and the fifth van [in the convoy]. They started opening a fire at us and when a bullet grazed my forehead, I got a superficial injury. The bullet hit my colleague Alaa in the head, he sat next to me. He got a critical head injury and started bleeding massively. His head fell on the steering and I immediately retook control of the steering to move to the right of the street.”
Tumblr media
“We arrived at the clinic and we started to try to give Alaa life support, trying to stop the bleeding from his head. We couldn’t do anything. He died while we were trying to (support him and to) save his life.”
“I stopped at the entrance of the clinic and waited for the last two vans to come; people were saying that one of us had been killed and his name was Alaa al Shawa.”
“We stood up, just shocked by his death and all that had happened to us. I was speechless and just not able to think. My kids were crying and people were discussing how to bury our colleague. And we had another person injured in the abdomen.”
“I decided to take shelter in the guesthouse with about 50 other people as it felt safer than the clinic. [My colleague] Mohammad, his family and other families decided to stay in the clinic. The cars were parked outside the clinic. Most of the people’s belongings stayed in the cars. We managed to stay in touch with the people in the clinic. They told us they had buried Alaa al Shawa.”
20 November: five MSF vehicles destroyed by the Israeli forces
“Two days later, after the convoy attack, a bulldozer clearing the way for Israeli tanks came and damaged our cars and threw them away from the right and the left side of the street. I was witnessing this from the window from upstairs in Gaza Clinic.”
Tumblr media
“Out of the stairs window, we saw an Israeli bulldozer, a tank next to it. And behind it there were 4 or 5 vehicles, tanks and tracked vehicles. They were moving and firing and the shooting was heavy.”
Tumblr media
“We heard a strange sound, like cars being crushed, and gunshots. I looked through the window and I saw. The cars had been pushed to the side and a fire had started. Once the tanks moved a little further away, I started filming, though I was scared. It was a terrible, frightening sight. My colleagues were in the clinic and I was afraid the fire could reach them. The fire crept up along the trees [by the clinic]. The electrical wiring also caught fire, it was a horrible scene.”
Tumblr media
“When [the bulldozer] pushed aside the cars, the western wall of the clinic fell apart. Then the tank came and opened fire towards the MSF cars and vans. The MSF vans caught fire. I was in the clinic, the fire and the smoke came inside. We stood there, thinking about how to stop the fire. So we moved the children and the women through the back doors to the other building, where MSF has the physiotherapy department.”
“We closed the doors, the clinic doors, and got inside. So the tanks were in the street outside the clinic, they kept coming back and forth for four days.”
“The morning of the next day, at around 10 o’clock, we started shouting, to check on [our colleagues], to know if they were alive or dead… I did not know. Thank goodness, someone replied and said they were unhurt, and were also worried about us.”
24 November: more MSF vehicles destroyed
“We used to take power and electricity from the guesthouse generators. But after this fire, the lines were all damaged and we had no power for three days. During these three days and before the truce, we had no electricity, no food and no clean water at all. The first day of the truce at 4.30 am, an Israeli tank destroyed the MSF minibus and cars that had been sent to us [from the south of Gaza] for our evacuation too.”

The Positivity Hormone: Endorphins
Article by UNESCO BMW staff: Nur Wahida Pesol
Endorphins. What are they and how can we produce more?
Endorphins are natural chemicals produced by the body that act as neurotransmitters. They are often referred to as "feel-good" hormones because they can help reduce pain, induce feelings of pleasure, and create a sense of well-being. Endorphins are produced in response to certain stimuli or activities and can have positive effects on both physical and emotional well-being.
The release of endorphins can be considered "good" because they are associated with several benefits, including:
Pain relief: Endorphins can help alleviate pain by blocking pain signals in the nervous system, acting as natural painkillers.
Mood enhancement: They can improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a more positive outlook on life.
Stress reduction: Endorphins can help counteract the effects of stress by promoting relaxation and reducing tension.
Immune system support: Some studies suggest that endorphins may have a positive impact on the immune system, although further research is needed.
You can naturally produce more endorphins through various activities, such as:
Exercise: Physical activity, especially aerobic exercises like running, swimming, or cycling, can trigger the release of endorphins and lead to what is commonly known as the "runner's high."
Eating certain foods: Consuming foods that contain substances like dark chocolate, chili peppers, and certain spices can stimulate endorphin release.
Laughter: Engaging in activities that make you laugh, such as watching a funny movie or spending time with friends, can trigger endorphin release.
Meditation and mindfulness: Practices like meditation and deep breathing can also promote the release of endorphins and reduce stress.
Listening to music: Listening to your favorite music, especially upbeat and enjoyable tunes, can lead to increased endorphin levels.
It's important to note that while endorphins have positive effects, relying solely on their release to address serious health issues or mental health conditions is not sufficient. If you're experiencing chronic pain, stress, or other health concerns, it's essential to seek professional medical advice for appropriate treatment and support

In Afghanistan, the war does not spare newborn babies inside maternity wards

In Afghanistan, the war does not spare newborn babies inside maternity wards
Afghan Security Forces stand guard on the site of the attack on newborn babies and new mothers in Kabul, Afghanistan on May 12. Photo by Ezzatullah Mehrdad, used with permission.
When Afghans woke up on the morning of May 12, and found out about two new terrorist attacks, they were reminded that the ongoing war had reached new levels of brutality: this time, not even newborn babies and their mothers were spared.
Kabul maternity under attack
That day, three militants stormed a maternity ward run by the Doctors without Borders NGO in Kabul's western neighborhood of Barchi. Global Voices was able to speak to several witnesses of the events, including the family of Soraya Ibrahimi, a 31-year-old pregnant woman, who had been taken to the clinic on May 11 at 11 PM. Soraya gave birth to a baby at 1 AM, and as her family was waiting for her return, a neighbor informed them the clinic was under attack. The family rushed to the clinic where the militants had entered the premise and started killing babies, some who had not even seen their mother. Soraya was killed, but her baby survived. “The guards of the clinic were unarmed and the militants entered without trouble,” Habibullah Amiry, an eyewitness, told Global Voices. “It took 30 minutes before the police arrived at the scene. They went on killing for 30 minutes without resistance.” As many of the doctors and nurses knew about safe rooms in the clinic, they were able to escape, but newborn babies, pregnant women, and other female patients could not hide from the bullets. Three women and one kid were shot in the hallway; seven women were killed in their beds; two women were fallen on the floor of surgery room; one woman who had her baby in her arm was fallen and a nurse was burned, according to journalist Anisa Shaheed. She is a journalist who visited the site of the attack. Her name  “Why we could not take all those mothers to safe rooms,” Wahida Mukhtar, a staff of the clinic, wrote in her Facebook post, “This sorrow will kill me.” One woman who was brought to a safe room gave birth inside the safe room while militants were killing people outside. The militants exchanged fire with the Afghan security forces for four hours, leaving hundreds of people outside of the clinic worrying about the fate of their loved once trapped inside. The Afghan Health Ministry reported 24 women and newborns were killed in the assault.
Even the dead are under attack in this escalation of violence
Elsewhere in the eastern Nangarhar province of the country, a suicide bomber walked among 500 people who attended the funeral of a local police commander, Sheikh Akram. The imam had asked people to line up and just announced the beginning of the prayer when the blast tore apart the crowds, killing nearly 30 and wounded 70 others. “The body of Sheikh Akram was close to the explosion,” Naeem Jan Naeem, an eyewitness, told The New York Times. “His body was wounded after he had died.”
U.S.-Taliban deal under fire
The attacks have taken place in the context of a fragile peace process involving the Taliban and the United States who signed a deal on February 29, with the hope of bringing the war closer to an end. The deal was expected to reduce violence in the country and promote talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Yet the deal faced a major deadlock over the issue of release from prison of 5,000 Taliban prisoners. The Afghan government refused to release such a large number, eventually, only a small number was released. Despite international calls for a humanitarian ceasefire, the Taliban have continued to wage a war in rural areas. The Afghan government has blamed the Taliban for attacks on the hospital in Kabul and the suicide bombing in Nangarhar. President Ashraf Ghani has now ordered Afghan forces to leave their previous “active defense” and go on the offensive against the Taliban. In response, the Talibans said in a statement that the government was derailing the peace talks and blamed the government for the attacks on the hospital. The Taliban said that they were ready for a war against the government.
Repeated attacks on Hazara Shiites
As Deborah Lyons, head of the U.N. mission in Afghanistan wonders:
Who attacks newborn babies and new mothers? Who does this? The most innocent of innocents, a baby! Why? Cruelty has no followers from the humanity. https://t.co/ebsGl4bY5p
— Deborah Lyons (@DeborahLyonsUN) May 12, 2020
The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in Nangarhar, but no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting of mothers and newborn babies in Kabul's Barchi neighborhood, an area predominantly inhabited by the Hazara- Shiite community that has been a target of high profile attacks against civilians since 2015, when it had claimed responsibility. Previous attacks against the community included suicide bombs inside a mosque, educational center, sports venue, and wedding hall. The suicide bombing killed each score of civilians that gathered to celebrate, mourn, and learn. “The incident is beyond painful; it is a catastrophe,” local resident Amiry told Global Voices. “Our teenagers are massacred in the education center; we are killed in the wedding hall, no mosque is left safe and this time a hospital. We are the most helpless people. Our hands are cut from the sky and our legs are cut from the ground.”

A suicide bombing claimed by the Taliban killed three Czech soldiers on patrol in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, the deadliest assault on Nato troops for many months. "Three Resolute Support service members were killed by a suicide bomber during a combined, dismounted patrol with Afghan forces in eastern Afghanistan," Nato's Resolute Support mission said in a statement. In Prague, the military said the dead soldiers were Czech. A US member of the patrol and two Afghan soldiers were wounded, Nato added. The attack by a lone bomber on foot happened at 6am in the city of Charikar in Parwan province 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Kabul, said provincial governor's spokesman Wahida Shahkar. In pictures, Looking back at British troops in Sangin, Afghanistan The Taliban in a statement claimed responsibility, saying they killed or wounded eight American soldiers in a "tactical explosion". The Czech army said in a statement that three of its soldiers - a staff sergeant and two corporals - were killed in the explosion. "The tragic death of our three soldiers has struck me deeply, and I wish to express my deepest condolences to their families," said Defence Minister Lubomir Metnar. The Nato force largely ended its combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014 and pulled out the bulk of its troops. A 16,000-strong residual force remains for training and counter-terrorism operations. Last month a US soldier was killed and two others wounded in an "apparent insider attack" in southern Afghanistan. Casualties among the Nato force have fallen dramatically since most were withdrawn from combat. But the Taliban and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) have recently stepped up their attacks against government and civilian targets. On Friday two suicide bombers dressed as women struck a Shiite mosque in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, while it was crowded with worshippers for weekly prayers. Thirty-five were killed and more than 90 wounded. The burqa-clad attackers shot at the mosque's security guards before opening fire on worshippers and then detonating their explosives.

Security forces gather following a deadly attack including a suspected suicide car bombing and gunbattles, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, July 31, 2018.
 (Associated Press)
Three NATO soldiers were killed early Sunday morning in a suicide attack for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility.
The attack occurred during a routine security patrol on foot outside a large U.S. air base in Afghanistan.
All three fatalities were from the Czech Republic, a member nation of both NATO and the international security force known as Resolute Support, said Lt. Gen. Ales Opata, chief of general staff of the Czech army.
One American service member and two Afghan soldiers were wounded in the blast.
“Their sacrifice will endure in both our hearts and history, and further strengthen our resolve.”
– U.S. Army Gen. John Nicholson, Resolute Support and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan commander
The attack took place in Charikar District, Parwan province, about 40 miles north of Kabul, near Bagram Air Base, said Wahida Shahkar, a spokeswoman for the provincial governor in the Parwan province.
“My thoughts and prayers, along with those of all of the 41-contributing Resolute Support nations, are with the families and friends of our fallen and wounded service members, and our injured Afghan brothers and their families,” said U.S. Army Gen. John Nicholson, Resolute Support and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan commander. “Their sacrifice will endure in both our hearts and history, and further strengthen our resolve.”
The U.S. military said it would not release more details until the families of the fallen service members have been notified.
NATO formally concluded its combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014, but thousands of forces are still providing support and training to Afghan troops, while carrying out counterterrorism missions.
Sunday’s attack was similar to one that occurred near Bagram in December 2015, when six U.S. troops were killed by a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle. Three others were injured in that attack.

Moms Feed Breast Milk To Unknown Babies For Greater Good

Moms Feed Breast Milk To Unknown Babies For Greater Good
Breastmilk makes up for all the nutritional needs of a newborn. However, under certain circumstances, the mother is unable to breastfeed the baby. To cope with such cases, a provision called human milk bank was introduced.

The World Hearth Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a joint statement mentioning that the best food for a baby whose biological mother is not available, is the breastmilk of another healthy mother.
According to UNICEF census 2005-2006, India had the highest number of babies with lower birth weight, which is 7.4 million.. It came to notice that infants who are undernourished are children of undernourished mothers—this was found to be higher in rural areas as compared to urban areas.
Natural Parenting Community, a group of like-minded parents in Chennai, India came with the idea of milk banking—the community coordinates breast milk donation. Previously, only 22 milk banks were available throughout the country. The community is offering to help those preterm babies who are in dire need of nutrition. The breast milk donation is done voluntarily by the community members and volunteers.
One such mother, Sharanya Govindarajalu from Chennai, India contributes 500-750 milliliters of breast milk in a week to feed the preterm babies. The 32-year old mother of a 7-month-old says that while her husband is a blood donor, she is a proud breastmilk donor and is happy to help others. Wahida Satishkumar, another member of the community, is also a regular donor.
Dr. N Kumudha, a neonatologist and an expert advisor for child health with the National Health Mission, TamilNadu, India says that due to the donor milk, the survival rate of preterm babies has gone higher. She mentions that many mothers are apprehensive about it, thinking it may decrease the amount of breastmilk for their own kid. However, she adds that knowing that many preterm babies are actually getting a supply of their much-needed breastmilk will only boost their confidence and stimulate more breastmilk production.
Dr. Kumudha adds that the donor milk is received from new mothers at the same hospital, lactating staff members as well as from the outside volunteers.
The stigma of breastmilk donation has thankfully reduced at both the donor and recipient ends, which is a good news. The team looks forward to the establishment of more such centers across the country for the greater good.
