Mushy May Day 10: Quiet Nights

A quiet night in the band ghoul den.

Much thanks to @forlorn-crows for putting Mushy May together, and to @ghuleh-recs for the divider.

After dinner leftovers are put away, dishes done and dried and back in their cupboards, Aether pulls his readers out of his breast pocket and heads to the common room. Rain and Cumulus are already there, having helped Mountain cook dinner.

The common room is typically quiet, these nights. Most of the others break off into pairs or just head back to their rooms alone, but the three of them lounge out in the common room for a little while longer. Mountain and Dew slip past Aether as he makes his way, and all three of them pause in the hall.

"I'll join you two in an hour or so. You don't have to wait up for me," Aether hums, pulling Mountain down for a soft kiss, and the earth ghoul goes easily. When they break, he turns to give Dew the same loving treatment.

"We'll keep the nest warm for you, starshine," Dew says, pressing himself against Aether's side for a moment like a particularly affectionate orange cat. Aether smiles and ruffles his hair, much to Dew's faux-chagrin.

"Have fun, nova," Mountain says, patting Aether's shoulder. Aether reaches up and squeezes his hand, and he heads to the common room as his mates head off towards bed.

He finds the common room as it usually is this time of night, ceiling lights turned off, a few lamps casting warm, gold light over the room. Cumulus settles cross-legged in her favorite arm chair, her thick glasses resting on her nose as she squints at a pattern, trying to make sense of the stitch abbreviations. There's a hook tucked behind her ear, a skein of yarn in her lap. Sunny's sprawled out on her stomach on the floor, her well-loved Gameboy in hand, the volume turned down way low.

Rain's on the loveseat, tucked into the corner, a well-worn paperback from the Abbey library open in his hands. Aether takes a seat on the other side of the loveseat, reaching over to the drawer in the side table for his crossword book and a pencil.

As soon as he's settled, Rain shifts until he rests his head on one of Aether's thighs, his knees hooked over the arm of the loveseat. It's a practiced motion, and when Aether feels the weight of him against him, something deep inside of him relaxes. He flips open his crossword book to the first unanswered page, about three quarters of the way through. It will be another week or so before he needs to get a new one.

He puts his readers on, reading over the clues as he starts to work. His other hand goes down, raking blunt claws through Rain's hair. He gets a glance at the spine of his novel, recognizing the cover as something Mountain was reading a few days earlier.

They exist together quietly, the only noises the scratch of pencil on paper, soft video game music playing, Cumulus quietly counting as she keeps track of stitches.

Aeon sticks their head in, noise-canceling headphones covering their ears and a Rubix cube in their hand. "Hey, guys?" All four of the other ghouls turn to look, and Aether glances at them over his readers.

"Yeah, pup?"

"Sorry, could I join you guys?" They scuff their shoe against the floor, trying not to shy away from the unadulterated attention of the others.

"Of course," Cumulus says, waving them over. They take a seat on the floor, back against the front of Cumulus's chair. Aeon leans their head back against Cumulus's shin, playing with the toy, the colors flashing underneath their lithe fingers.

Aether settles back into the couch, working on his crossword, slyly watching Sunny's gameplay. There's no obligation to talk, no masks that need to be held up physical or mental, it's just five ghouls existing together, and it's something that Aether cherishes.

It takes him longer than it normally does to finish his puzzle. That's just because every so often, he tucks his pencil behind his ear, making sure not to catch it on his piercings, and just takes it in. This is what they've worked for. Sure, spreading the word of the Unholy Father is rewarding in its own way, but this is something else, something almost more rewarding than the work, and Aether intends to enjoy every minute of it that he can.

Once he's done, he cards his fingers through Rain's hair one more time before putting his book and pencil away. Rain chirps quietly, shifting reluctantly so Aether can stand. "Good night, angelfish," he whispers, trying not to break the peaceful silence.

Rain squeezes his hand, fighting not to yawn himself as he gets comfortable in the spot Aether's vacated.

He steps, surprisingly quietly for a ghoul of his size, over Sunny, tapping her shoulder with the spade of his tail. She hums in response, focused on her game but still wishing him good night.

Aeon gets their hair ruffled, careful not to dislodge their headphones, and he bends down to press a kiss to Cumulus's forehead. She presses up into it like a cat pleased to receive affection, even though there's no shortage of love in this pack.

Aether spares one last glance back at them before he heads up the hallway to his room, the exhaustion of the end of the day beginning to creep in on him. There's a crack of light underneath his door, and he sighs as he steps into his shared bedroom.

"I told you two you didn't have to-" He starts, cutting himself off as he takes in the sight of his mates in their nest, fast asleep even though the nightstand lamp is on. They're both on their sides, Dew curled around Mountain's back, something that almost looks humorous given their size difference.

Aether smiles, big and warm, and he pulls out his phone, even though he has hundreds of pictures just like this. He knows his mates have pictures of him like this too, and it doesn't stop him from snapping a few before setting his phone and readers down on the nightstand. He changes into a pair of sweats, tossing his day clothes in the hamper before crawling into bed behind Dew.

Mountain shifts but doesn't wake when Aether slings a big arm around his and Dew's waist, but Dew huffs a breath, craning his neck to look back at him.

"Hey, starshine," Dew whispers, voice slow and sleepy. Aether leans in and kisses his cheek.

"Hi, baby. Sorry to wake you."

Dew hums and nuzzles back against him, knocking their horns together. "S'all good," he hums. "Glad I get to say good night, though."

"Me too." Aether gives him another kiss on the cheek, reaching over him and Mountain to pull the cord on the lamp. "Good night, love."

Okay so I know we came out as a system like 12 hourss ago, but I am begging any of the mods to please give us some names for Stars and Guide.

Thoughts on Episodes 31-40

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE GOLDEN HEART: This is a really cute Em episode, and seeing Citrine work with the Mysticons was cool.

THE LAST DRAGON: I loved this episode, and seeing how the old man we saw throught the show was more than he let on was fun. I expected him to be more than he let on, but I didn't expect him being a dragon.

GAME OF PHONES: This was kinda interesting, but as we never saw Zarya addicted to video games before, it seemed kinda exaggeerated. Then again, they did justify it by saying it was the new release of a certain game franchaise Zarya got hooked on before when new ones came out.

THE FOZ WHO SAVED LOTUS NIGHT: I never expected a Christmas episode to have zombies, but it worked.

HEART OF STONE: This was a really cute and sweet episode. Plus I like dwarves in Dnd, so it was cool to see more of Rudick's Hollow and the dwarves who live there.

MONSTER HUNT: Piper was kinda immature in this episode. Also, considering this was the last Piper-centric episode, I kinda wanted Piper backstory. Introducing struggles with the mask was cool though.

THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE: This episode was really fun to watch, and had a good message about the importance of communication. I also think sending the Pink Skulls to stop marauders was cool for the group.

ETERNAL STARSHINE OF THE MAGE'S MIND: I liked seeing more of what Proxima went through, and was a good episode for Arkayna and Proxima's relationship as honorary sisters.

FEAR THE SPECTRAL HAND: This was an amazing episode with so many cool scenes. I like Dreadbane turning good and calling himself General Bane, as well as how Proxima apoligized to Nova Terron, and was forgiven.

AGE OF DRAGONS: This was a good finale, though Em and Piper did take a back seat to Arkayna and Zarya, which is kind of dissapointing, as I like all main characters to share the spotlight in the finale (I would discuss how they would fix it, but as this focused soley on each episode seperately, that will have to wait for another post)

Sidney smiled as he glanced over at Evie’s face. The trip to Neuschwanstein Castle had been one of the selling points for their tour through Bavaria and Switzerland. Her eyes widened with wonder as the castle came into view as he drove along the highway. “Beso, it’s the prettiest thing I have ever seen,” she gasped. He reached over and squeezed her hand as she stared in amazement.

After they pulled into the parking lot, Sidney grabbed the backpack out of the car trunk and led Evie by the hand to the waiting horse and carriage. The open air carriage ride was short, but filled with cute selfies and snuggles. “Are you ready Princess?” he joked as he assisted her out of the carriage. “Yes, my Prince Charming,” she said as she snuck a quick kiss before she stepped off the last step and onto the gravel. Together they walked hand in hand for the remaining walk towards the castle. 

Two hours later, they had completed the tour and explored the outside of the castle. In the gift shop, they went a little wild buying souvenirs. Evie purchased a snow globe for her office while Sidney perused the Christmas ornaments. “Evita,” he called to her while holding up a hand painted ornament. She walked over and examined it closely. “Should we get it and put it on our tree in Nova Scotia?” he asked excitedly. 

She smiled and felt a lump form in the throat. Evie was touched that he remembered her desire to decorate the cottage when they traveled back for Christmas. She was also thrilled when he referred to it as “our” tree. Their lives were slowly becoming intertwined together and it made her heart happy. “I love it, Sidney,” she gushed, “It’s beautiful. Should we get another one for the Pittsburgh house? Maybe a different style?” Slowly they searched the ornaments until Evie pulled out an ornament in the shape of the castle. “I like this one,” she suggested. They completed their purchases with a shawl for Sidney’s mother, some posters and two coffee mugs. 

From the gift shop, they explored the exterior area of the castle before they started the hike to the Queen Mary bridge which offered the most breathtaking views of the castle. They held hands during the hike and Evie nudged Sidney with her head. On the bridge, Evie took a ton of photos and Sidney happily obliged her need for ten different selfies. 

Suddenly Sidney pulled out his phone and started playing their song, “At Last”. Then he pulled her into his body and began dancing. Evie grinned as he danced and twirled her around. They had garnered the attention of the international crowd of tourists who were smiling sweetly at the two love birds. Sidney kissed Evie as they moved before he started to sing the song in her ear. They finished their dance with a dramatic flair to the claps and cheers of the crowd. Evie grinned from ear to ear and turned to face the castle again. She felt Sidney kneel down behind her and froze in place. Her mind raced with thoughts. “Oh my god, is he going to propose here? Oh my god, is he?,” she thought to herself. 

Obviously the subject of marriage had been discussed numerous times. Evie couldn’t think of a more apropos location for her prince charming to propose other than the actual castle. She debated on what to do next. Should  she wait for him to say something? Turn around? What was the protocol? Finally, she turned around with a flourish and saw him on bended knee. “Beso!” she exclaimed and he looked up at her in utter confusion. His hands were tying his shoes and it took a moment for her to realize what was happening. “Oh,” she thought to herself before looking around to see if anyone had noticed her reaction, “He is not proposing.” 

She was stunned by her reaction. It wasn’t like she was expecting a proposal. If you had asked her this morning, if a proposal was happening soon, she would have laughed. However in the moment, while caught up in the beauty and romance of the atmosphere, her mind did race to the possibility. The disappointment was palpable and made it difficult to breathe. 

“Evie?” he questioned. Something had obviously happened to upset her. He remained in his position when it hit him. He was on one knee, in an incredibly beautiful place after an incredibly romantic moment. She thought he was proposing. He asked, “Did you think I was proposing?” A nervous laughter followed the question. Evie shrunk back against the bridge railing. She had interpreted the laughter as mocking. He stood up and took a step toward her. She looked from side to side as if trying to determine the best escape route from the situation. A wave of insecurity and doubt washed over her. “Evie,” he said as sweetly as possible, “Please talk to me. Did you think I was proposing?” She nodded her head yes slowly. 

“I am so embarrassed,” she said softly, “How humiliating. I just got caught in the moment.” Her voice broke slightly. He pulled her to him and squeezed her tight. “I am so embarrassed, Beso.” She pushed him away slightly so they were a few feet apart. 

“Evie, didn’t you notice that there wasn’t a ring? I didn’t say anything?” he laughed nervously, “Don’t you think I would have a speech prepared, Princess?”

“Quit laughing at me, Beso!” she cried, “Quit making fun of my silly reaction. Quit making fun of my hope.” Her words cut like a knife to his heart. “I can’t tell if you are teasing me by calling me Princess. Are you thinking about “playing” or are you being romantic?” she asked. Evie continued, “I know now that it was stupid to think that you were proposing when you don’t have a ring or didn’t do a speech.  I have been a bit of gooey goofball about the castle. It was silly to be this excited but it really seemed like something out of a fairytale. I didn’t realize how excited I would be at the thought of a real proposal. Now it seems like you are making fun of me,” she rambled.  She stared at him briefly and then looked down. Tears flowed from her eyes and he kicked himself mentally.  “I am sorry,” she said, “I am being overly sensitive today for some reason.” 

He pulled close into his body, wrapped his arms around her, and squeezed her tight. “I swear to you that was not my intention. I would never mock you about this” he said softly. Evie sighed and clung to Sidney for a moment before looking up into his eyes. “You were not being silly at all. It would be a perfect spot to propose to you. In fact, I am kicking myself for not doing it here. Damn, you are right. Right here in this spot would have been the absolute perfect spot to ask my princess to be my wife. You ARE my princess, Evie. Please don’t feel embarrassed.” 

He bent down and pressed his forehead to hers, “Please don’t be embarrassed Mon Etoile. I loved your reaction. I loved how excited you seemed to be and I hope that you are that excited when I do propose.” Sidney kissed her softly, “I AM going to propose, Evie. Don’t doubt that. I have a plan in place. It IS going to happen.” 

Evie grinned slowly, “You promise?”

He nodded, “Yes, I promise. Although now I feel pressure to make it better than here. I will though. I will make it the perfect proposal for you. A proposal with the best, most sparkly ring I can find- a big, big diamond for my princess.” 

Evie bit her lip, “Speaking of rings, can I tell you something?”

His eyes widened slightly, “Tell me.”

Evie paused, “I know that you said a big diamond, but can I get another kind of engagement ring?” His head tilted to the left in confusion. “I don’t like the idea of a diamond solitaire ring and then a separate wedding band. I would rather have a one piece wedding band with diamonds and an engagement ring to move to my right hand.” 

“Whatever you want, Princess,” he smiled. 

“And I won’t even argue with you about the cost,” she grinned back, “Although, you could give me a cubic zirconia ring and I will be just as happy.” 

“Evie…..” he chided. 

“What?” she asked. 

“Do you really think I can walk into a jewelry store in Pittsburgh and purchase a fake diamond ring? Me? Buy a fake diamond ring?” he said incredulously. 

“Okay, fine- buy me the big, expensive diamond ring if you insist,” she teased. 

“Only the best for my princess,” he smiled as he kissed her, “only the best for my princess.”
