Combing my two biggest interests - The Libertines and perfume, recalling the scents which defined that era for me.
Libertine by Vivienne Westwood - Notes of Pineapple, Lily-of-the-Valley, Oakmoss, Labdanum and Musk. Released in 2000 and sadly discontinued. (A tester strip from this perfume was pasted into one of Peter’s early journals.) There are many perfumes that have had this same name since, but only one that smelled exactly like the year 2000 - mossy, earthy but soapy and clean, playful and lively, wiping off the grass stains of grunge and soaring into a new millennium, determined to cause trouble before it had consequences.
Stella by Stella McCartney - Notes of Rose Oil, Peony, Tangerine and Amber. Released in 2003. The syrupy rose jam scent of nights spent losing your mind - sleepless weekends, the eye of the storm of a cultural shift. Everything is alive, everything is exciting, everything is happening, and you can’t stop pressing your nose to your wrist, or a lover’s neck, to breathe it in, the hint of sour among all the flowers.
Prada Amber by Prada - Notes of Bitter Orange, Patchouli, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Labdanum and Tonka Bean. Released in 2004. A little sexy, a little dirty, things were getting messy. Sold via the cleanest of clean girl advertisements that were a total lie. This is the scent of a skanky cult - filthy and addictive, sweetness left on skin days after a kiss. An almost incoherent blend of vanilla and knees caked in mud - an ad for clean sheets when the bottle contains what went on between them.
Anglomania by Vivienne Westwood - Notes of Cardamom, Rose, Violet and Leather. Released in 2005 and also sadly discontinued. Where Libertine smelled of 2000 this smelled of 2005, the height of indie sleaze - leather jacket rock ‘n’ roll, hats and suits and ties and ironic nationalism, the celebration of all things British, driven at least in part by the explosion (and implosion) of The Libertines in English music and fashion culture. Weaved in with the spice of Brick Lane, the bootleg band shirts of Camden, the incense burning in the corner of your ashtray-scented flat.
Youth Dew Amber Nude by Estée Lauder - Notes of Cinnamon, Ginger, Carnation, Amber and Sandalwood. Released in 2005 and discontinued. The amber era for perfume, and the start of Tom Ford’s reign with ingenious collaborations that took dusty heritage brands into the modern age with their glamour intact in a time where we looked back to look forward. All the trash gathered up and made beautiful, injected with new life and resold at a premium. But didn’t it smell delicious, just like history, just like old money.
Belle d'Opium by Yves Saint Laurent - Notes of Jasmine, Incense, Tobacco, Peach, Rose and Patchouli. Released in 2010 (and yes, also discontinued). Rich and bold and witchy, the end of an era creeping in, all things indie drifting away, diluting but leaving their indelible mark - one last gasp of the rock star girlfriend, clad in her vintage faux furs and laddered tights, the messy glamour, the scent trail of a fearless era falling away, all those heightened, drunken memories of dollar store incense and roll-on oil remade into its final form.

Alex Fierro's Introduction Full Breakdown
Okokok so. This is going to go full English-professor mode, where I'm drawing conclusions that are gonna seem a little far-fetched. That's what's fun about media analysis! I can say something is a symbol, and even if I don't have enough faith in RR's competency to know if he meant for it to be a symbol, it's still true! That being said, a lot of these choices I'm sure are intentional, either at a literal or subliminal level. Page numbers are going to be used not to assert a kind of authority or whatever— this is a Tumblr post, not an essay— but to help readers find the pages I'm referencing in case they'd like to do some digging of their own. Also, this is going to be really long. Really sorry to anyone with ADHD; I might make an audiofile of this so you can get the information without having to read the whole thing. With all that, let's get into it!
To kick off, let's talk about Alex being in the form of a cheetah when she first meets Magnus. Of course, there's the obvious impact of him seeing her but only so breifly, as well as introducing the conflict between her and the rest of Hall 19. But that could have easily been accomplished by almost any animal. The choice of a cheetah being implicated implies two qualities of Alex that will be recurrent throughout the two books she's in: 1. She has a tendency to run away, as we'll later learn when she describes how she became homeless, and 2. To Magnus, she's elusive. She can't be caught or held down. The event that shows this so transparently is how Alex refuses to define their relationship at the end of the series, despite it clearly surpassing the normal bounds of friendship.
But the cheetah isn't the animal Alex is in the form of when Magnus first gets a good look at her; she's a weasel. Weasel's bring up all kinds of connotations: ferocity, slickness, a lack of charm. When we want to describe someone as an untrustworthy person, we call them a weasel. RR had Alex take this form to play up her comrades' feeling of distrust towards her. She could be a double-crosser. But paradoxically, the up-front and vicious mannerisms of a weasel also have a transperency. She does not try appealing to her Hallmate's sense of goodwill because she doesn't have anything to gain from it. So even though there is the implication that she might be an antagonist, there's also evidence from her actions and mannerisms that she isn't. The weasel's long and skinny frame also allow for a smooth transition into Alex's actual body, which is convenient.
As Alex transforms into her usual human form, Magnus describes her as "a regular human teen, long and lanky, with a swirl of dyed green hair, black at the roots, like a plug of weeds pulled out of a lawn" (pg. 50). That simile at the end is of particular interest. Let's compare it to another time Magnus describes Alex's hair, in Ship of the Dead: "Her hair had started to grow out, the black roots making her look even more imposing, like a lion with a healthy mane" (pg. 136). By contrasting these two different examples, we can see the development of Magnus and Alex's relationship. The first time he sees her, he thinks of her hair as something nasty— note the word choice "weeds." Later on, though, he becomes more affectionate towards her, more complentary. The immedient negative reaction is less his actual impression, though, and more the reaction he expected to have based on everyone else's reaction to Alex.
Her clothes are equally as interesting; as Magnus describes it, Alex wears "battered rose high-tops, skinny lime green corduroy pants, a pink-and-green argyle sweater-vest over a white tee, and another pink cashmere sweather wrapped around the waist like a kilt" (pg. 50). Aside from the obvious fact that this outfit is a) bizzare, b) fire, and c) Alex's signature colors, which add a layer of style to what can otherwise be a somewhat boring series fashion-wise (excuse me, Blitz), the outfit reveals a crucial facet of Alex's backstory in a kind of subtle way. These are expensive clothes, like the Stella McCartney dress in Alex's room. Note the mention of fabrics (corduroy, cashmere) and patterns (argyle). These indicate wealth and status. Even the high-tops; shoes like that don't come cheap. But I'd like to return to the very first word of the section: "battered." Alex's wardrobe show-cases a proximity to wealth, but also shows that that proximity has been strained and lengthened, maybe for an extended period of time. Alex dresses like a rich person, but she isn't one. Least, not anymore.
The last word of that outfit-introduction is also of interest: "kilt." At the current moment, Magnus thinks that Alex is male. No one has indicated otherwise to him. Everyone has been referring to Alex with he/him pronouns. Samirah called Alex her "brother" (pg. 29). His first thought in seeing what he at first perceives as a guy with a jacket wrapped around the waist is That looks like a kilt. This thought tells us about Magnus: despite being open and accepting, he still has some lingering notions of gender conformity from his years in wider American society.
Magnus also indicates that the outfit "reminded me of a jester's motley, or the coloration of a venomous animal warning the whole world" (pg. 50). This is rather self-explanatory, but it's still worth noting that Magnus sees the outfit as something bizzare, strange, and even perhaps comical. This places Alex at odds with the other people Magnus has met. It also reveals that Magnus has zero fashion sense. But we already knew that.
After finishing up staring at the ensemble, Magnus finally gets around to actually looking Alex in the face. First Magnus says that he "forgot how to breathe" (pg. 50), which, yeah, relatable. This is justifed by saying that Alex has the same face as Loki, but the very same sentence that asserts that that's the case also suggests an alternative reason: Alex has "the same unearthly beauty" as her father. Here we can see the beginnings of Magnus's attraction to Alex, though at this point, he still has a lot of internalized homophobia. Though there's certainly some truth in that Magnus was unnerved by Alex's resemblance to Loki, the idea that Magnus pointed out that Alex was pretty without elaborating on that thought until about a chapter later— after he was informed that Alex was presently a girl— can tell us a lot about how Magnus perceives sex and beauty.
Of course, Alex's eyes are given special attention. She has cool eyes; what can I say? But I'd like to focus in on how Magnus here depicts Alex's heterochromia as "completely unnerving" (pg. 50). Again, let's contrast this with how he describes them after getting to know Alex a little better in Ship of the Dead. In Chapter 3, Magnus describes "[Alex's] dark brown eye and his amber eye like mismatched moons cresting the horizon" (pg. 25). Once again, this shows the development of their relationship— but this time, it's in a much more personal way. Eyes are the windows to the soul; they are culturally important and biologically important in inter-personal connections. In you look into someone's eyes, you're giving them your full attention, and you're implying a kind of closeness. The way that Magnus describes Alex's eyes in the second passage is downright intimate. At this point, he is in love with Alex, and it is clear when contrasting the two descriptions.
As my last point, I'd like to discuss Alex's first words on page: "'Point that rifle somewhere else, or I will wrap it around your neck like a bow tie'" (pg. 51). First of all, Alex saying this with a "perfect white smile" (pg. 51) on his face implies that she is used to being threatened. She is not afraid of being shot; she counters the promise of an attack with a promise of her own. This pleads the question: why is Alex accustomed to violence? What events of her past or qualities of her life have brought her to this point? The threat itself reveals Alex's trauma from being genderfluid in a society with rigid gender norms, as well as her antagonistic relationship with her father. Magnus makes a comment that Alex "might actually know how to tie a bow tie, which was kind scary arcane knowledge" (pg. 51). Like Alex's wardrobe, the idea that she may have experience in high-class fashion also implies her former status as a rich kid.
I could go on. I could break apart Alex saying "'Pleased to meet you all, I guess'" (pg. 51). There is a wealth of information in this short page span that tells us things about Alex Fierro in the present moment, quietly demonstrates things about her past, and characterizes the narrator Magnus Chase. This passage is also effective in hindsight in marking the progress of Magnus and Alex's relationship.
But I'd like to take a step back and look at not the pieces, but the whole picture. Alex Fierro gets a full page of pure description— her outfit, her face— and about a chapter of introduction. This comes after several chapters of build-up. Alex Fierro is an important character you need to keep your eyes on. Alex Fierro is emotionally significant to the main character, Magnus Chase. Alex Fierro is one of the most developed and well-rounded characters that Rick Riordan has ever written— heck, she's one of the best characters in middle-grade books period. The extended emphasis on her and her alone tells us exactly what role she's going to play in this story: she's the star.

From Luxury Fashion to Perfumes: The Chloé Pedigree
Chloe by Lagerfeld (1975)
Chloé is a French fashion house founded in 1952; the name belongs to a mythological goddess Chloé.
Chloé, best known for its iconic perfumes, is more than just a perfume company. Gaby Aghion and her partner Jacques Lenoir co-founded the brand in 1952 to rebel against haute couture clothing (which was seen as pretentious). They coined the term "ready-to-wear" so they wouldn't be associated with this kind of high-end fashion business model that dominated at the time.
The debut Chloe perfumes
In 1956, Chloe presented its first collection at Paris' famous Café de Flore. This café was frequented by Pablo Picasso and Albert Camus, who were joined later by Jean-Paul Sartre. Just like now, the signature of Chloé has been effortless attire paired with bohemian style.
When it came to a new signature scent for a generation, the era of ‘power’ fragrances had long gone. Chloé wanted something fresh and confident with a feminine appeal that embodied this age group.
Amandine Marie and Michel Almairac drew inspiration from Chloé's free-spirited, beguiling mood to create a perfume that captured the floral notes of magnolia swirling with peony, rose, lily-of-the-valley, and freesia in addition to warm amber cedarwood.
The bottle took inspiration for the beautifully ‘pleated’ glass from an intricate detail of the sleeve of a Chloé blouse. It is graced with a prettily knotted petal-colored ribbon that is a nod to the ‘Carré’ style of Chloé dresses.
Without any doubt, this classic brand keeps evolving with every decade that passes by…, and we can't wait for their next chapter!
Perfume from the past
Karl Lagerfeld joined Chloe in 1966.
Chloe by Lagerfeld, a beautiful fragrance that is a chypre as well, Chloe has notes of bergamot, green notes, and fruit at its opening. It then transitions to a gorgeous jasmine-tuberose heart and finishes with mossy woods musk on the dry down.
The beauty of these florals changes between an opening burst into lovely blossoms while maintaining balance throughout.
Top notes: Green notes, coconut, bergamot, aldehydes, peach
Heart notes: Tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, hyacinth, orris
Base notes: Musk, sandalwood, moss, amber, cedar, benzoin
" a woman does not put on my fragrance. she enters it" Karl
The creators of Chloé
With such attendance of designers who’ve since made their mark at Chloé, it is seriously impressive. Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo (the former Creative Director), Michel Almairac, and Mylène Alran as well as Hannah MacGibbon have all worked with the brand in recent years.
Chloé today
Chloé's headquarters are located at Avenue Percier, 8th arrondissement of Paris.
The head designer is currently, Clare Waight Keller.
In keeping with its high-fashion glamorous image, Chloé has been worn by many celebrities including Marion Cotillard, Sienna Miller, Madonna, January Jones, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone, Clémence Poésie, and Katie Holmes.
The smell of Chloe perfume
Chloe is a refreshing scent of flowers and fruits, a combination of the sweet smell, rosewater, water hyacinth, and apple blossom alongside signature jasmine.
Some of the frequently used fragrance notes are bergamot, Damascena rose essence magnolia, white musk, and amber. Read more about Chloe.

[ad_1] It’s certainly no secret that the fashion and beauty industries can be wasteful and unethical. Clothing manufacturers get (rightly) dragged for subpar factory conditions. Not to mention high carbon emissions. Beauty companies for their use of environmentally unfriendly ingredients along with packaging and penchant for animal testing. Ick. Which is why we’re searching for eco-friendly fashion and beauty buys. With Earth Day just around the corner, what better time to green-ify our shopping habits? It can be hard to find green items that excite us as much as, say, a pair of Nikes or a tube of Chanel’s latest lip shade. But they’re absolutely out there. We swear. Now more than ever, sustainable fashion and natural beauty industries are closing in on the mainstream. (In a world where the East Coast sees snow in April, who wants to contribute to global warming?) Brands new and old — Reformation, Stella McCartney, RMS Beauty, Burt’s Bees, etc. — have clearly made sustainability the standard without compromising on design or product payoff.Ready to start replacing your chemical-laced empties and fast-fashion gear? I was REALLY excited when Scentbird reached out to me and asked if we wanted to review their box on the blog not only because I’ve always had my eye on Scentbird, but I’ve also been considering getting a subscription for Matt, who has increasingly been enjoying fancy cologne. (I think it’s a direct correlation to how long he’s been with me. I tend to influence people into liking fancy, expensive things. 🙂 )
Scentbird
Price: $14.95/month ($11.21/first month!)
Box Type: Perfume (and other scented products with upgrades)
Why you’ll love it: You get to choose from over 500 authentic designer scents to try out each month! Choose your new fragrance before the 5th of each month to lock in your scent, and then it’s delivered straight to your door with a specially designed case to protect it and spritz!
How to Subscribe: Click here!
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The subscription comes with a little card that explains how Scentbird works. First it explains how the case works, which is super easy. It also lets you know how you can rate scents on the Scentbird site for more perfume recommendations, and that you must choose your new fragrance by the 5th of the month in order to lock in your scent. Scentbird also has a referral program where you can earn free products by referring friends. And finally, you can upgrade your monthly shipment with additional fragrances or even some makeup and bath and body products!
Since I received this package in PR, I got four scents, which is really awesome. They were delivered safely in a black padded envelope and each fragrance was in a little velvet bag.
The Scentbird site says that if you have a women’s subscription, you will receive the white case first, and if you have a men’s subscription, you’ll receive a black case. Every 7th shipment, you’ll receive a new case in a variety of colors. I actually happen to love the white case the most, but honestly, it’s hard to pick a favorite!
Side note: My mom got me this gold bird awhile back and how perfect is it for this blog post? Thanks, mom! I love it!
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Opening the case is really easy – you simply twist up. Then you can spritz yourself to your heart’s content! If you wanted to change out scents, you just pull the vial straight up, and conversely, you can just drop the vial in and twist down to close. Easy peasy. I also really like this container because it will make it great to put in my gym bag without me having to worry about breaking glass.
When you pull out the vials from the container, they look like this. Each fragrance is 100% authentic from the designers, which is good to know. No knock-offs here! Only the real deal. I’ll describe each of the scents I chose below.
Commodity Velvet ($105): I recently received Commodity Velvet as a sample in a Sephora order and almost immediately put the travel-size in my Sephora cart because I loved it so much. I even posted about how much I loved it via Insta Stories and the brand responded their thanks and also sent this video over, which was so nice. I don’t really receive a lot of engagement from brands so it was nice that they took the time to not only respond to my story but send me something new.
The travel-size of Commodity Velvet is $26, and the full-size is obviously over $100, so if I was subscribed to Scentbird, I’d be very pleased to have about a month’s worth of perfume for $15. The travel version of Velvet is a glass bottle and it makes me a bit nervous that it might break in my makeup bag when I’m hauling it back and forth to the gym. The Scentbird case would keep it very safe, which is nice!
https://vimeo.com/254511855
If you don’t want to watch the video, here’s how Sephora describes the scent. I think Velvet is such a beautiful scent for Fall/Winter.
Commodity Velvet is mysterious and elegant. This fragrance evokes the pure indulgence of a soft texture meeting bare skin. Its woody oriental blend is infused with roasted almond, rose petals, and black amber.
Stella McCartney Stella ($97): Stella is one of my all-time favorite scents. I have purchased several bottles of this in my life, but I’m still not ready to settle down and commit to ONE scent – especially when Commodity Velvet has taken the lead. However, I’m glad this little bottle will give me a chance to re-fall in love with Stella again! I think this is such a great scent for Fall. (And isn’t that purple case so cute? I made sure my Stella went with the purple one, because I only associate Stella with a purple bottle!)
The first scent from Stella McCartney, STELLA, is a homage to the English rose, and an effortless expression of femininity. The refined floral evokes a rose in full bloom in a traditional English garden with a sultry amber contrast. Beautiful and unapologetically feminine, STELLA’s scent composition is approachable and enduring.
Soft rosy floral top notes drive the fragrance, subtly balanced with sharp, fresh mandarin essence and light peony flower. Intensifying and elongating the opening notes, the heart is pure rose, to represent absolute femininity. Stella’s base notes give a strong, sensual finish. Resonating up through the rose accord, the masculinity of the amber contrasts the floral side, making it bold with a sensual finish.
Pinrose Wild Child ($65): This is the only scent out of the four that I had never smelled before. I have been hearing a lot about the Pinrose brand recently, so I was curious. They recently collaborated with Sephora on these beautiful holographic brushes, in addition to a set of duochrome-y lip glosses and a beautifully-packaged highlighter. I had never heard of the brand prior to the collaboration, so I was interested in to learn more. Their branding is very millennial-friendly as are their descriptions, like this one.
Unleash your inner troublemaker with flirty white flowers [Gardenia, Jasmine]. Best worn with a twinkle in your eye.
I’m glad that Scentbird carries Pinrose because I’m definitely interested in trying a few more scents from them. This one is nice, but it’s very Spring to me, and that’s not really my vibe right now, ya know? But I do love gardenias and this is a lovely scent.
Burberry My Burberry Blush ($70-$124): In the past, I bought Burberry’s My Burberry and I really enjoyed it. I’ve received a few samples of My Burberry Blush and I really enjoyed it. It has some of the same notes as My Burberry, but it definitely feels a bit more floral. This feels like a nice Spring or even just a great daytime scent. It smells very classic – like, I sort of imagine a woman executive wearing this.
My Burberry Blush steps back into a London garden as it awakens in the first light of day. Capturing the senses, blossoming flowers open with a burst of energy, while dapples of glowing light weave, twist, and turn through the flora. Created by perfumers Francis Kurkdjian and Christopher Bailey, the fragrance opens with sharp pomegranate fused with vibrant lemon. Delicate rose petal notes are lifted with crisp apple, while a base of jasmine and wisteria round off the scent for an intensely feminine touch.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I wanted to show the Scentbird bottle side-by-side with a regular perfume sample so you can see the difference. Obviously with Scentbird, you are getting much more than a regular sample – you are getting almost as much as a rollerball, which is more expensive, and more annoying. I much prefer spraying perfume on rather than rolling it on.
[line]
Final Grade: A
While I received this Scentbird package in exchange for a review, I just fell in love with the whole concept. I’m pretty sure I am going to get a subscription for my husband because I think he would love it a lot. After I work my way a few of these perfumes, I may get my own subscription as well. I love how much product you get per vial, and I think they will each last me longer than a month. I also love the variety of brands you can choose from  – I think it’s awesome that they carry indie brands like Commodity and Glossier in addition to the big designer names. I also love the little case – It’s great that it’s an actual spray instead of a rollerball, and I love how compact and sturdy it is.
I’m definitely a big fan so far. Are you interested in subscribing to Scentbird for yourself? Definitely click here to learn more! You can always cancel at any time, which is awesome!

Blake Lively makes dramatic outfit change for Met Gala after parties — and she's not the only one
On Monday night, the fashion didn’t stop when the Met Gala came to a close. Following the reception, celebrities partied the night away. But their dramatic looks — many featuring massive trains, large headpieces, and tight corsets — weren’t necessarily fit for dancing with Rihanna at a night club. So many made outfit changes — but no one sacrificed fashion for comfort. From Blake Lively’s tartan ensemble to Kim Kardashian‘s LBD, here are the best ensembles that didn’t make the red carpet cut.
Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for nonstop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day.

She continued her fashion reign as one of the night’s best dressed as she changed out of her stunning Versace gown into a tartan ensemble with a mini skirt, matching knee high boots, and a blue jacket draped over her shoulders.
