Heey, sorry if you already got this question a bunch of times, but which machine would you recommend for people who want to learn metal engraving?
Hey, no worries at all. So, it's a common misconception that hand engraving is done with a rotory machine, like a dremel to take away part of the metal kinda like how a cnc milling machine would.
I use things called gravers (also sometimes called scourpers). They look kinda like wood chisels but real small, and come in a variety of shapes.
When starting I'd recommend googleing a local jewellers suppliers and getting yourself a No. 2 flat graver in steel (youll occasionally see it marked as HSS which stands for High Speed Steel) and a wooden handle like the pictures below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The steel graver bit should cost somewhere between $6-15 and the handle should be somewhere between $3-6. Just need one of each starting off.
DO NOT CHEAP OUT ON THE STEEL BIT OF THE GRAVER!!!
I've seen the cheap ones shatter. And when they do you'll seriously injure your hands. DO. NOT. CHEAP. OUT. ON. THE. STEEL.
You'll also potentially need a hand vice or at least some way to hold what you're working on. A very basic hand engraving vice looks like this:
Tumblr media
They run anywhere from $25-35.
And grab a copy of this book:
Tumblr media
It's from way back in the day so it's out of copyright. Don't pay for it, just get a pdf copy. The writing is kinda old fashioned and hard to follow but the information is still as relevant today as it was back then. Again, great book, don't pay for it. The person who wrote it and their kids are dead and only amazon or whatever will get the money.
With those you can get started. The information you need is in the book. You don't need the fancy ball vice like in the book and you don't need to bend the graver like it says in the book, just put the steel lengthwise in a vice with maybe an inch sticking out, and use a hammer to drive the wooden handle on to it by hitting the wood. Don't leave it sticking miles out cuz it could shatter when you hit the wooden bit with the hammer.
Start with copper or silver, other metals are too hard or expensive. Silver is nicer than copper.
MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY ANYTHING 'GRS' BRANDED.
They sell pneumatically assisted gravers, they're good but astonishingly expensive and the price doesn't match the quality. (if you ever do go work up to pneumatically assisted gravers you should go with Steve Lindsay stuff).
I use pneumatic assisted gravers so I don't destroy my elbow and shoulder by engraving all day, I've tried both GRS and Lindsay gravers and the Lindsay stuff is far better, both are about the same expense. At the professional level your equipment can be up in the $5-15k range cuz you're using microscopes, special vices/work holding, gravers made of special metals etc. However you can get started for about $40

Profiles in Villainy
Blackwolf
In the wake of a world wide nuclear war, the humans who survived the apocalypse had been transformed into mutants who live in the dark lands of Scorch.  Whereas humanity's true ancestors, the fairies, elves and dwarves, have resurfaced and live in the idyllic land of Montagar.
While her people celebrate 3,000 years of peace, Delia, queen of the fairies, fell into a trance and gave birth to twin wizards: the kindhearted Avatar and his evil, mutated brother Blackwolf. After Delia's death years later, Blackwolf attempted to usurp her leadership, but Avatar defeated him in a magical duel. Blackwolf was banished from Montagar, vowing to return and conquer the realm in the name of the mutants.
Three thousand years later, Blackwolf had established himself as the tyrannical leader of  Scortch, where he raised a powerful army of mutants, orcs, goblins and trolls.  He began his campaign to push the borders of Scorch into the lands of  Montagar.  Furthermore, Blackwolf had discovered an ancient projector and reels of nazi propaganda footage from World War II.  He used this with his magic to generate an overwhelming form of psychological warfare, inspiring his own soldiers whilst horrifying enemy troops into submission.
Accompanied by the fairy, Elinore, and an elfin warrior named Weehawk, Avatar set off on a mission to sneak behind enemy lines and destroy Blackwolf’s secret weapon.  It does not go smoothly, but the heroes prevail and Blackwolf was killed.  The propaganda films were destroyed and the villain’s army, now leaderless, dispersed.
Actor Steve Gravers provided the voice for Blackhearts, debuting in director Ralph Bakshi’s 1977 animated film, Wizards.

Of Hiding Spots and Refuges - Ch1
Tumblr media
N/A: It's been a hot minute since I've posted a fanfic on Tumblr, so bear with me please. This is just the first chapter and the second one is almost finished - might go up on AO3 earlier than on here.
Description: Just a platonic and comforting Steve&Robin bonding moment after Steve finds Robin in an unexpected position. (sounds vague but I don't want to spoil it!) Content warnings: maybe bad parenting, but just hinted at. 2nd chapter also has mentions of hom*phobia. Let me know if there's anything else I should flag.
... Chapter 1
There were only a few things Steve despised more than closing shifts. The evening dragged on and he had way too many things to check before making sure that he could in fact close the shop. Robin had left already but and for the life of him, he couldn’t remember saying bye to her. She’s been acting a little weird, actually, weirder than usual Robin.
He tried to think whether she might have mentioned where she went, but he also didn’t really pay that much attention to what was going on. She must have been tired or have other things on her mind. Steve took off some of his uniform and the sailor hat and stuffed them into a locker, putting on his own jacket. Then, he swept the floors and dusted the counters off crumbs with his fingers. The opening shift would probably take care of the rest anyway.
Just when he closed the security grill, he heard a small rattling sound coming from the back of the changing room. He rolled it back up and the sound went quiet immediately. ‘Hello?’ He called out, his brows furrowed. His thoughts immediately went to intruders or pests. His salary was however too low to go in and deal with those. Admittedly though, he was a little too curious and reckless not to go and check. Steve Harrington has not watched many horror films, but even he knew enough to reckon that his erratic behaviour could result in pretty unwarranted results. His idiocy took over and he stepped into the back closet, wielding a wrench they had hidden at the back of the Scoops counter. For emergencies. In case of monsters.

He barged into the supply closet, letting out something between a gasp and a yell. It was Robin. Hiding.
--------
Honestly, how long did Steve even need to close the damn shop? Robin leaned against the cold metal wall and took a couple breaths. Just a few minutes and she’d be alone. What would she even do? She wasn’t sure. That troubleshooting would take place once that issue occurred. Right now, she just hoped to be left alone in the whole of Starcourt, where nobody could find her. Or she hoped so. As far as she was aware, there were no alarms or night security guards.
Once she heard the grill close shut, she wanted to reach over to her pile of clothes to change from the Scoops uniform. In the most inconvenient moment, she lost her balance and accidentally brushed against a box full of screws and it toppled over, rattling across the floor. Robin closed her eyes tightly. She could hear Steve open the store again and crouched further into the supply closet. Robin felt herself trembling and refused to take a single breath. Suddenly, the door swung open. Robin was looking right back at Steve, cowering in the corner.

--------

‘Robin?’ Steve looked both shocked and a little worried. He reached out his hand to help her get up, but she shook her head, now no longer looking up at him, but looking down to her side, her lips pressed together, as if she was angry or even ashamed that he found her. Steve didn’t hesitate and plopped down right next to her. ‘What’s up, did you want to have a nice sleepover at Scoops Ahoy?’ He teased to diffuse the tension, but something was in fact telling him, that the situation was a bit graver than he assumed.
Robin looked back at him, a weak smile dancing briefly across her face. ‘Yeah, childhood dream and all that,’ she replied, her voice hollow. ‘Okay,’ Steve replied, clearly not convinced. His eyes glanced over to the small shelves, seeing that Robin definitely seemed to have some supplies there. A toothbrush, some towels, a change or two of clothes, some medication and a book. Their eyes met again. ‘Hey, Robin, do you wanna tell me something?’ Steve asked gently. Robin was quiet. ‘I’ve been staying here for a bit after work,’ she said quietly. Steve gaped at her for just a second. He was itching to ask why, but he hoped that Robin would tell him.
‘I stayed here last night as well,’ she continued. Steve realised that he was the one leaving early last night since Dustin asked him to come over. He made sure that Robin would be okay closing down, as she has done so multiple times at this point. But now he had to admit that she already acted a bit off yesterday. He might have just been too dense to realise. Or, and maybe that was the more feasible option, she was better at hiding it. He was only just now noticing the dark circles under her eyes. Not surprising since she slept here, among the fluorescent buzzing lights on a cold metal floor, probably only having her clothes or the Scoops uniform to lie on and cover herself with.
‘I’m sure it’s a great camping spot, but… why?’ Steve couldn’t fight his curiosity anymore and just flat out asked.
‘I got kicked out,’ Robin said just as bluntly.
‘Out of home?’ Steve asked again, instinctively moving closer to Robin. Somehow, it hasn’t crossed his mind that Robin would stay here out of necessity. For some reason, he just hoped that it was all a part of some crazy scheme or a lost bet.
Robin just nodded her head.
‘Wanna talk about it?’

Robin shook her head.

‘Okay, um…’ Steve said, slapping his knees to help himself think. ‘Well you know, you’re welcome at my house, if you need somewhere to crash.’ He said, getting up again. Robin seemed stumped for a second, then laughed a little bit, but her eyes were filled with tears for a brief second.
‘No, no, I’ll be fine,’ she shook her head decisively.
‘Bullshit, come on,’ Steve said, his tone mildly scolding. ‘You don’t have to crouch in a supply closet. You can take my bed, I’ll sleep on the couch or whatever. We can have warm dinner. You like pizza too, right? And then we can go to work together. Or I can cover for you,’ he seemed to ramble on. ‘Really?’ Robin seemed to consider it for a second, but she also seemed to have a bit of a fight going on inside her head. ‘Wouldn’t offer it if I didn’t mean it. No Robin, I’m serious,’ Steve confirmed. ‘And what about your parents?’ ‘Nah, don’t worry about that,’ Steve said.
Part of him wanted to tell Robin that he often had someone over and that even though his dad was an asshole and he wasn’t much closer to his mother, and that was precisely the reason his parents didn’t care if he had someone over. He wasn’t sure if this was good or not. Or wether Robin would find a parenting figure comforting or upsetting at the moment.
‘Okay,’ Robin said in the quietest voice, interrupting his thoughts, and got up as well. ...
Notes: So while I'm not new when it comes to fanfic, I'm definitely new to ST fanfic. Still working on exploring the characters and stuff. Buuut I'd be happy to know what you think :) Like I said, chapter 2 is almost done (it's even slightly longer than this one) and it should be up quite soon.

lilo misfits au!?! that sounds amazing! 👀
yeah, it follows the basic premise of the Misfits series, the boys from 1D get community service, the storm happens, they get powers. Louis is the guy in the hoodie from the future and tries to save Liam, they fall in love. I wrote about 8-9K words until I lost momentum and it's been unfinished ever since :/
But here, have a snippet while we're at it:
Liam throws his bag aside when he enters the lair and throws Louis a pouty look. "Today you told me I was a knob."
"I know." Louis, who was just making tea, smiles at him and pushes a warm cup into his hands. "I used to say that to everyone."
Liam smiles back, pretending not to notice the past tense. Used to. Why not anymore?
"I remember today," Louis goes on, chuckling a little. "I kept trying to pinch your nipples. I was a right twat to you, but what can I say? I do like to make you blush."
Just that comment alone makes Liam's cheeks go pink. It's weird hearing Louis talk about it like this - like it was a long time in the past, when for Liam it was merely an hour ago. It's also weird to be looked at like this, fondly, almost intimately, like Louis knows something Liam doesn't (which of course he does).
Were they …? Will they …? He doesn't dare asking the question that is on the tip of his tounge. Someone like Louis would never notice someone like him, right? The thought alone is ridiculous, so he clears his throat, trying to change the topic.
"I saw that woman lurking near the community centre," he says, tapping at one of the photographs on Louis' ominous wall of time and space. "The dead probation worker's girlfriend, I think."
Louis cocks his head at that, making a non-commital sound. Liam knows better than to pry. Instead he goes on: "Must be hard, losing someone like that. I mean, she doesn't even know what happened to him. She must think he's dead or something. I can't imagine how sad she must feel."
He still feels guilty about what happened during the night of the storm, still wakes up some nights with a start. Sometimes he wonders, though: where the body disappeared to. If Steve is still out there somewhere, alive. If they could have helped him in any way. He looks up to find Louis watching him intently.
"Grief like that has got nothing to do with sadness, Li. It's like keeping a monster at bay that lurks just in the corner of your eye. It's okay if you don't allow yourself to look too closely, but fuck if you do. Then it's like - you realise that the monster? It wasn't just a bad dream. It's real and it's coming for you. And it will stay right there, in the corner of your eye, for the rest of your life." Louis shrugs. "It's horror. Sadness doesn't even come close to it."
"Who did you lose?"
The question is out before Liam can stop himself. He swallows hard. There's a pause as Louis stares at him and Liam stares right back, not quite believing his own directness. At last, Louis gives in: "My mum."
Liam doesn't think he is lying - the pain in Louis' eyes looks real enough and despite all the secrecy, he has so far been as truthful with Liam as he could without endangering the timeline. Still, it feels like there is more to it than Louis wants to admit.
"I'm sorry. He- you never told me."
Louis smiles again, a small curve of his lips that's graver but also oddly beautiful, and he cups Liam's cheek with one hand. So, so very gentle.
"I just have. I will again."
What happened to you? he wants to ask. What took away your Cheshire Cat smile? He's too afraid, though, and he's not sure he would get an answer.

Do We Need Entertainment at Strong Men's Conferences?
The picture used for this episode's publicity image or cover, depending on where you're seeing it, comes from an attempt to use AI to generate an image for me.
Using a photograph of a matapalo, or strangler fig in English, known for its distinctive characteristic of enveloping and ultimately overpowering its host, as a metaphorical foundation, I asked DALL-E 3 to craft an image with the following prompt:
Create an image of a strangler fig where the main tree is depicted by or symbolic of the church, being constricted by representations of entertainment, stardom, money, and fame chocking it out.
The result is compelling visual metaphor—a tree at once vibrant yet ensnared by the very elements meant to augment its growth. Incidentally, that's also the main theme of today's episode, but let's back up.
Does entertainment even belong in the church?
In this episode of the podcast, I share some of the deep sense of disillusionment that arises when respected spiritual leaders fall from grace, citing examples a couple of high profile example figures who've irreparably ruined their earthly legacies. Listen to find out, who, besides Mark Driscoll, I'm referring to.
Driscoll's recent controversies serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges within the Christian community about leadership, integrity, and accountability as well as… what role, if any does entertainment even have in the church? Does it belong, or is the fact we're even debating this indicate other graver issues?
We also discuss the dangers of distractions and idolatry, and how "killing sticks," can hinder our spiritual growth and relationship with God. I hope to challenge listeners to reflect on any aspects of their lives that may be taking precedence over their faith.
Amid reflections on personal and collective failures, this episode's overarching message remains one of hope, redemption, and the transformative power of returning to the core of our faith in Jesus and an organic approach to Christianity free from the matapalo of the American Gospel Enterprise.

WAPO Polls Whether Trump Should be charged without Polling His Most Serious Suspected Crimes
Tumblr media
Except they polled only one of Trump’s suspected crimes, “encourag[ing] his supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol, where the riot followed.” They don’t even describe that as incitement, which is the only way it’d be a crime.
Tumblr media
But the poll is largely meaningless because they don’t poll the more egregious crimes for which Trump might be charged. Among the things they didn’t poll, all of which are being investigated, is whether Trump should be charged if he:
Raised funds by making claims about election results he knew to be false
Badgered Brad Raffensperger to alter enough votes so he could win Georgia
Had a role in fraudulent electoral certificates from seven swing states, some of which were submitted to the Archives
Entered into an agreement, either directly or through someone like Roger Stone, with the militias that directed the assault at the Capitol
Made a request of Mike Pence he knew to be illegal and, when Pence refused, sicced his mob on Pence, threatening the Vice President’s life
Deliberately limited law enforcement and National Guard response at the Capitol
Dangled pardons (one provided, in Steve Bannon’s case) to get others to help sow the Big Lie
Aided and abetted assaults on cops
It is mildly interesting that WaPo found a majority of the country believes Trump should be prosecuted for something that, as described, is probably not a crime. It would be far more interesting to see polling on whether Trump should be prosecuted for any of the potentially far graver crimes there is evidence he committed.

I'm sure you've answered this before but I couldn't find it when I went looking through your blog. I just wanted to know how you got started with your engraving ? And how do you recommend other people start ?
Your work is so beautiful, even just the "doodles" you do on coins, it's really inspiring!
No worries whatsoever, stuff can get lost on tumblr like no other site I know.
So I've been a goldsmith for over a decade and dabbled with hand-push engraving. Just before lockdown in 2020 I used some windfall money and got an air assisted engraving set up and second hand microscope. All through lockdown I taught myself hand engraving to keep myself sane and then in 2021 I was headhunted from my job as a goldsmith to be the in-house hand engraver for a fancy pants place.
(search 'Steve Lindsay engraving' or 'grs engraving' to see what I mean about air assisted. Note, Steve lindays gravers are best but grs vices are easier to get a hold of and are really good). It's easier than hand-push and won't wreck my shoulder and wrist)
I'd recommend starting with hand push, it's much much cheaper and quicker to get into. Full set up should be under €200-ish. Youll need gravers, magnification, work holding, a solid table, patience and lots of bandaids. You WILL stab yourself and it will hurt like a bitch.
You can do a lot more with air assist and microscope, the learning curve isn't as steap but the cost of entry is really high. Starts at around the €2000 mark and can run into the tens of thousands depending on how kitted out you want to be. And that's 2000 with second hand microscopes and just the basics.
I've reblogged a post I wrote before about getting started with hand push just before I answered this so if you go to this post on my tumblr and scroll down it should be the next one.
Also thank you so much for the compliments. It's funny looking back on my old work, all I can see are the flaws and where I could have done better/different. It's really nice to hear people like em anyway 😊
