E17: The Man Who Stole Tomorrow
Okay! We're here! I started this rewatch because I wanted to talk about Kang and Janet Van Dyne a lot before Quantumania. I have seen that by now, and also 17 episodes of this show.
You might not remember that when Captain America was introduced in the mini-episodes, Kang was as well. Kang believes Captain America is the cause of some kind of time anomaly and he comes to EMHU Earth to kill him in this two-part episode.
(It's also implied, later on, that the thing Captain America does that causes a time... problem? Time issue? I don't know the term, happens later on this season. When Captain America touches the Cosmic Cube (aka the Tesseract in MCU speak), it is supposed to grant someone their wished for world. Baron Strucker wants to remake the world so that Hydra won WW2, but Steve gets to it first. But the world doesn't change much when Steve touches it. It just makes it so Bucky survives in the past. And, honestly, Steve should have been more specific with his wish because Bucky simply surviving means he is tortured as the Winter Soldier. I suggest you think a lot harder if you ever get the chance to touch the Cosmic Cube, reader.)
Spoilers for later this season and next! But Kang is trying to stop Steve from destroying the future.
It's interesting because some have argued that, in the MCU, Steve Rogers going back in time to live with Peggy Carter should create a branch timeline but the writers and directors of ENDGAME don't agree as to what happened. With the TVA added to the mix, Steve's happy ending should have just been pruned immediately as soon as he arrived. Yet somehow he seems to have grown old in the past.
I don't understand any of that, and unless Chris Evans agrees to come back, I don't think Steve Rogers will be the cause of the multiversal war that has been predicted for the MCU. But he still could be, I guess.
This Kang is more, well, cartoon-y than MCU Kang. He is voiced by actor Jonathan Adams, who is also a Black man but otherwise not that similar to Jonathan Majors.
This Kang is motivated by love. We know this because he's always staring longingly at a woman in stasis--Ravonna Renslayer (though we are not to that part of the story yet). He also just shows up at the Avengers Mansion and is like, "Hi, I'm Kang. I am here to kill Captain America." There's no elaborate plan or organization, like we see from He Who Remains in Loki.
He brings the Avengers (whole team this time!) into the future to see NYC after the sun has burned up the planet, which is somehow Cap's fault according to Kang. Also, "BTW," Kang says, "I'm going to conqueror your world so you can survive the coming Kree-Skrull war." Because Kang's solution to every problem is him being in charge.
There is a moment where Steve is like "okay maybe I should let Kang take me? Because of the whole Earth burning up thing?" And Tony's like, "nah, this guy is a jerk." (Literally he says Kang might be their "only hope" but "he's being a real jerk about it.")
So the Avengers fight, even though no one has any idea what is going on.
Kang is like, "Gross, I'm just going to leave you here in this destroyed Earth to think about your decision."
Except Ant-Man calls a bunch of ants to cover Kang and knock him out of his time-chair. All of humanity died, but there are still insects on this planet. This scene is fairly similar to the one we saw in Quantumania where Hank arrives with a slew of ants that drag Kang away. Except this time it also involves Hulk smashing as well. (Giant Man smashed in the movie?)
This gives Tony time to "hack" Kang's time chair. (I should mention Black Panther is able to cut Kang's armor with his vibranium knives.) Tony recognizes some Stark Tech in the origins of the chair, and is able to bring them all back to the Mansion.
Kang is very upset that Iron Man is sitting in his chair. (It sounds like he has a pretty personal and intimate relationship with this chair.) Tony zaps him. Then Thor hits him with a lightning bolt and Kang retreats to his big space ship and brings more spaceships from the future to "conquer" the 21st century.
Steve is like, "he'll be back."
And in more ominous news: Hank has a whole bunch of Ultrons in the Negative Zone at a "new" prison. I'm sure that will go super duper for everyone.

I’m bored so I’m gonna list things about Natasha Romanoff (my love 🥰) that the MCU didn’t get right because they were too busy making sure they got good pictures of ScarJo’s ass for promo posters
- 616!Natasha may be scary mysterious supersoldier spy but also she loves pretty things. MCU never gave us Nat fawning over jewelry in a store window or raving about a new dress she just bought. Where is my fashionista Nat 😩
- 616!Natasha is an independent woman. I don’t mean in the romantic sense, I mean in the literal sense. She prefers to fight her battles alone. She takes charge and gets shit done herself. Yet even the Black Widow movie wouldn’t let Nat fight without an ensemble there to help her.
- 616!Natasha is a supersoldier. Yes, like Steve and Bucky. She has enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, etc. But ofc the MCU would never allow her that because then she’d be tOo pOwErFuL.
- 616!Natasha has an actual love life. She doesn’t just tease all male characters and never engage in a relationship. Nat has had a relationship with Clint, Bucky, Matt (although personally I’ve never liked that relationship), Deadpool (that was a dark time…) and more.
- 616!Natasha did not have any “found family” in the Red Room. Alexei? Her perv-y husband, not her dad. Melina? Her jealous nemesis, not her mom. Yelena? Again, jealous nemesis (plus some homoerotic tension), not her sister. The closest thing she had to “found family” was her lover Bucky, but the MCU for some reason never tried to capitalize on that very heterosexual relationship that probably would have helped them curb Stucky shippers.
- 616!Natasha does not answer to anyone. She’ll do what people tell her, but only if she truly agreed with it. She won’t blindly follow Steve Rogers like she does in the MCU. She’s capable of critical thinking.
- 616!Natasha is an anti-hero. Sometimes, she’s treated as the token villain-killer on the Avengers team (which tbh is necessary because how can you not kill a villain then act surprised when they make a comeback).
- 616!Natasha is not the “team mom.” That’s Janet Van Dyne.
- 616!Natasha is not easily beatable by Bucky. In the MCU, he beats her easily (in CATWS and CACV) but in the comics, their skills are pretty evenly matched. He’s beaten her in fights, and she’s beaten him in fights.
- 616!Natasha actually went through mind control and brainwashing by her Red Room masters, just like Bucky. She’s no more guilty than he is for the crimes they’ve commit.
- 616!Natasha has a personality outside of “the hot one on the team who hits on the men.” She has interests, hobbies, etc.
- 616!Natasha is clever as fuck. She doesn’t need anyone on the Avengers team to spell things out for her.
616!Natasha knows her worth and it’s not Jeremy Renner 😭

Lineamientos para que yo recomiende tus fics
¡Hola!

Be Your Own Hero - Steve Rogers x Reader (Part 3)
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Summary: Y/N has lost all her family and most friends in The Decimation (I refuse to call it The Blip). Refusing to believe their deaths are permanent, she dedicate years to find a way to reverse it. When she finally finds something that might help, she searches for the Avengers. It’s Steve Rogers x Reader, but there is also a lot of Badass!Reader. Also, Non-American!Reader. If you are American, think of a country you’d have loved to be born into :D
Warnings: none!
Note: Y/Co = your country. Y/Ci = your city; Y/N/L = your native language.
Previously: The van doors opened and a human being was tossed out. You heard groaning and approached them. The building was still dark, but, thanks to the machine lights, you could see their face clearly. It was Scott Lang. Ant-Man. Back from the dead.
Part Three
“So, you’re telling me it’s been three years since I got stuck”, Scott said after you finished your story. “Even though it felt like three hours for me.”
“To be fair, I had no idea of how much time had passed for you”, you said nonchalantly, as if you talked about these kinds of things everyday. Probably the shock hadn’t worn off. “Honestly, I just wanted to study your machine. Never in a million years I thought you’d still be alive.”
“Well, we have to get to the Avengers”, he said. “Are they still in New York?” You nodded. “Great. Let’s get on the road.”
In the end, they didn’t have to steal the van. You had to hide, of course, but the guard was so surprised to see Lang alive that he let them out without further questioning.
On the 3-day ride to New York City, you two introduced yourselves properly and discussed everything you both knew.
“My original plan was to steal the van, bring to the Avengers, ask them to figure out how to get inside the Quantum Realm and find the Stones in their quantic form”, you explained.
“Sounds extremely difficult, to be honest, Y/L/N”, he replied. “I think there is an easier way to achieve the same goal.”
“And that would be?”
“Like we established in the first couple minutes we met each other, time has passed differently for us. For me, it has only been three hours. Here, three years. If we find a way to enter the Quantum Realm at one point in time and leave it at another point in time...”
“We could travel to the past, get the Stones in their physical forms, come back to the present and make our own wish”, you finished for him.
He frowned. “I was thinking more along the lines of trying to stop Thanos before he makes his wish.”
You shook your head. You remembered reading about time travel when reading about the Time Stone. “That wouldn’t work. When we travel to the past or the future, we create alternate timelines. If we, say, kill Thanos in the past, nothing will change here, but we’ll create a dimension in which the Decimation never happened. Problem is, we have to do something that can change our present, not our clones’.”
It took a while, but he eventually nodded. “I’ll trust you. You're the one who came to me with an informal PhD on Infinity Stones and magical things, so.”
“I also rescued you”, you added with a grin. He smiled back and thanked you once again. “And we’ll bring Hope back. We’ll bring everyone back. We’re closer than anyone has ever been so far.”
“Yeah. God, I hope you’re right.”
So did you.
Three days later
Finding the Avengers headquarters was easy with Scott driving. You had switched seats every four hours during the trip, but you asked him to drive all the way when they reached NYC, since he had been there before and knew the his way around much better than you, who had never even been the country before.
Hopefully one day you’d come back with your family. The city looked so beautiful, even if somewhat empty.
“You should wait in the car first”, he said when he stopped in front of the building. “They don’t know you, but if I manage to get in, I’ll bring you along.”
You nodded and waited. His greeting was awkward, like he didn’t really know what he was doing, but it wasn’t like you’d have done better. Eventually he was allowed to get his van inside, and you along.
At the room, there were two people waiting: Natasha Romanov, the Black Widow, and Steve Rogers, Captain America.
Suddenly it was hard to breathe. Scott introduced you while you took deep breaths to compose yourself. This was important. Extremely important. You couldn’t afford to ruin everything by fangirling.
“Y/N?”, Scott called. “I think it’s better if you begin to tell your tale. I kind of showed up only at the end, so.”
Right. Your story. You took another deep breath.
“Would you like to sit down?”, Steve Rogers offered. You nodded, and he guided you and Scott to a couch.
“Okay”, you began as you sat down, followed by the other three. “I began searching for the Infinity Stones as soon as I heard of them for the first time.” Rogers blinked at this, but didn’t say anything. You continued, “I desperately wanted to believe the Decimation wasn’t permanent, that we could bring its victims back, so I started working on finding out who Thanos was, what the Infinity Stones were, and how they were all connected. Long story short, because you probably know most of my initial discoveries anyway, I ended up in a Sanctum of the Mystic Arts.”
“They had dozens of books about the Stones, book and manuscripts. The temple Master had foreseen my arrival and had faith that I’d succeed. It was wonderful to hear that, of course, but I asked her how she knew that. She said that all sorcerers draw their powers from the Time Stone, even if they never came in contact with it.
“I spent a year inside the temple, studying the texts 24/7. I found a lot of things, but the one that gave me the most hope was when I discovered that, if one gather all Stones and conceal their power, they can make any wish.”
At that, Rogers interrupted you. “It sounds great, Y/L/N, but I’m afraid we can’t gather the Stones back.”
Romanov nodded. “Thanos destroyed the Stones in 2018, shortly after the Decimation. We managed to track him down and kill him, but it was too late.”
Thanos was dead already? Great. You didn’t have to fear that he’d try to reverse your wish if you succeeded. Instead of letting her face drop, like the two expected, you grinned.
“Oh, but remember what I said. The Master I met said she had foreseen my arrival thanks to powers granted to her by the Time Stone. If the Stone no longer exists, how could she have done that?” At Rogers and Romanov’s stunned expressions, you kept going. “She had sensed an attempt at destroying the Time Stone, yes, and we both guessed the other Stones received the same treatment. However, there is one thing about the them you probably don’t know: they exist both in physical and quantum forms. If Thanos destroyed the physical forms, they still exist in the Quantum Realm. Proof of that is that the universe is still standing. No Stones, no universe.
“I remembered reading on Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man, on the internet. Many people wondered on his disappearance, since there is footage of his workmates turning to dust, but he is nowhere to be found, despite having been with them. Everyone knew Ant-Man’s abilities came from Quantum technology, so I assumed that, if I found the van he was last seen in, I could find a way to get inside the Quantum Realm.” You glanced at Scott. It was his turn.
He nodded. “Right. So, back in 2018, we - and by ‘we’, I mean Hank Pym, Janet Van Dyne, Hope Van Dyne and myself - we found a way to safely get inside the Quantum Realm, something that hasn’t been done before, like ever. Hope, she... she was supposed to pull me back, but she got dusted seconds before she could do it. It was Y/N who accidentally pulled me out, three days ago.”
“I’m sorry”, Romanov said. “Those must have been three long years.”
Scott shook his head. “That’s the thing. In the Quantum Realm, time goes differently. I didn’t get stuck there for three years, but for three hours.”
“We had a lot of time to discuss while driving here”, you continued, letting an yawn escape. “My original plan is not great, and impractical. I only kept going because it was my only hope. But I believe Scott’s idea is better.”
“It won’t be easy”, he said. “But it’s possible, at least, something we’re not sure Y/N’s original plan is. Well, our new plan consists in figuring out a way to create... a time heist. We enter the Quantum Realm in a point of time - the present - and get out in another.”
“The past”, you clarified. “I know it sounds crazy, but in theory, it’s possible. There were many studies on time travel when I read about the Time Stone. There have been attempts to do it before, only it was by magic instead of physics. We don’t have the magical item anymore, but we can figure out another way.”
A short silence. “And what would we do then? In the past?”, Rogers asked.
You took a breath. “When you travel back in time, you create... an alternate dimension. Our timeline wouldn’t be affected by changes in the past. Say, we kill Thanos in... 2014 or something. It won’t change a thing for us, but now there will be a timeline in which the Decimation never happened. What we can do is, get the Time Stone from the past, bring them here, make our own wish and bring everyone back. Thanos is not even alive anymore to try to undo our wish.”
Rogers shook his head. “Honestly, ma’am, with all due respect, this is insane. How are we even supposed to trust you? Only Scott knows you and, frankly, he might be biased due to the fact that you rescued him.”
You bit your lip. You had predicted this would happen. “There is a Sanctum here, in New York. The sorcerer there can confirm almost everything, if not everything, I said. I have the address.”
Romanov asked to speak alone with Rogers, and two left the room. Scott looked at you. “They probably think it’s a trap.”
“I’ll bring Wong here if I have to”, you replied instantly. “I spent three years finding a way to bring my family and friends back. I won’t give up now because the Avengers think I’m HYDRA, or whatever.”
There must be have been something in your expression that frightened Scott, because he quickly looked away. “I believe you”, he said in a low voice. “I have to.”
And you understood. You had to believe in yourself, too.

Finally, America’s Ass shows up! Sorry if you were expecting sparks right away, but it didn’t seem plausible. Steve has every reason to doubt the Reader, given he’s never seen her in his life. Don’t worry, soon he’ll be more comfortable around her, and vice-versa!
Next: Y/N, Steve, Natasha and Scott head to Tony Stark’s house to ask him for help. Will they have more luck than in canon? Also, Steve begins to see more of Y/N, and she starts to see who Steve is behind the shield.

Chronology of Tony’s secret identity
One of the things that often comes up in discussions of 616 Tony Stark is his secret identity. Unlike the MCU, where Tony's secret identity lasts only until the end of the first Iron Man movie, or the Ultimate universe, where it's never secret at all, one of the key traits of 616 Tony for a number of years is the fact that he maintained a secret identity: Tony Stark the CEO and Avengers benefactor and his bodyguard the Avenger Iron Man, were presented to the world as two different people.
Now, if you're a fan of Tony in the comics, none of the above is new to you. But what isn't always obvious, especially if your primary point of familiarity with Tony is other universes, is that coming out as a superhero isn't a one-and-done thing. He doesn't start out by making a big public announcement: some people figure it out over the years, some people find out, some people are told. But until he tells the world, it's still a secret. There are Avengers teams even within the past 25 years where some people know who he is and some people don't.
So I thought that it would be useful to compile a list of who learns Tony is Iron Man, and when they learn it. The list isn't complete -- and I certainly welcome additions and corrections -- and is currently limited to Tony's friends, romantic interests, and selected teammates (rather than supervillains). Basically, I just wanted to limit it to characters we might care about for fannish purposes, because I often find myself wondering if Character X knows at Time Y that Tony is Iron Man. A lot of these aren't traditional reveals in the sense you're probably picturing, in which Tony takes off his helmet; several of them are just people saying that they've figured it out. But I think they still count.
This is the raw data, ordered by year of reveal; I will then go through it with explanations as appropriate:
RETCONS:
Joanna Nivena (Iron Man v1 #224 (1989); retconned into origin story)
ORIGINAL CONTINUITY:
1965
Happy Hogan (Tales of Suspense v1 #70)
1973
Thor (Avengers v1 #113) Pepper Potts (Iron Man v1 #65)
1977
Whitney Frost (Iron Man v1 #104)
1980
Bethany Cabe (Iron Man v1 #139)
1982
Steve Rogers (Avengers v1 #216) Tigra (Avengers v1 #216) Silver Surfer (Avengers v1 #216) Janet Van Dyne (Avengers v1 #224)
1983
James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Iron Man v1 #169)
1985
Clint Barton (Iron Man v1 #193) Bobbi Morse (Iron Man v1 #193)
1998
Carol Danvers (Iron Man v3 #7)
1999
Selected friends & Avengers, again (Captain America & Iron Man 1998 Annual)
2002
Rumiko Fujikawa, and also the entire world (Iron Man v3 #55)
2006
The entire world, again (Civil War: Front Line #1)
The first identity reveal by internal chronology is actually from 1989; IM v1 #224 introduces, in flashback, a woman named Joanna Nivena whom Tony was engaged to, and who actually encouraged him to be Iron Man, and then promptly left him when she figured out that was his true calling. She is a retcon, and as far as I know she's a retcon that canon hasn't done much of anything with -- I think this is her only appearance -- but technically she's the first.
Discounting the retcons, as you can probably guess, Happy Hogan is the first person to find out that Tony is Iron Man. It happens in a relatively early ToS issue, ToS #70 (1965), in the middle of the Titanium Man fight. And if you're looking for it, it is so completely subtle that you will probably miss it. I missed it twice. Happy thinks to himself, "I'm gettin' a hunch why Stark is never around when Iron Man's on the scene! It's nutty... but it must be the answer!" Seriously, that's as much as it gets spelled out, but Happy knows. Of course, then he gets amnesia for a bit, but the amnesia goes away in ToS #83 (1966) and he remembers again.
At this point you might think to yourself that probably this means Pepper will find out soon. Ha. Ha. No. Pepper does not find out soon. In fact, Thor technically finds out before Pepper does, though it happens in the same year, 1973. There's this whole Happy/Pepper/Tony dynamic where Pepper has a thing for Tony and Tony keeps trying to push Pepper toward Happy because Tony believes in his own imminent death. And to help this along, he behaves coldly to her as Iron Man, meaning that Pepper thinks Iron Man is terrible and Tony is so great. The identity reveal, in IM v1 #65, actually happens when Pepper and Happy are fighting and Pepper says something about how Iron Man is so awful and Happy tells her that Tony and Iron Man are the same person and then shows her the armor in its case.
And then there's Thor! The Thor thing seems like it should be easy, but it isn't. In Avengers v1 #113 (1973), Vision is injured, and they need an engineer (Tony) and a doctor (Don Blake) to help him, and so Tony and Thor kind of mutually tip their hand to each other about their identity; it's a really sweet reveal. It's also completely retconned, in the same year, in the same title, in a story by the exact same writer -- in Avengers #118, the Avengers/Defenders War ends with Doctor Strange explicitly mindwiping Tony and Thor's knowledge of each other's identities out of each others' minds. The really weird thing is that this retcon doesn't seem to have stuck; Tony refers to Thor already knowing his identity in IM #108 (1978), and Thor already knows in the Molecule Man incident. Comics, man, I don't even know.
A bunch of Tony's romantic interests find out in the remainder of the 1970s and early 1980s. I don't have an issue number, but I know Marianne Rodgers figures it out pretty early on in their relationship, on account of being a telepath. Whitney Frost finds out in 1977, Iron Man v1 #104, when she becomes seriously romantically involved with Tony. (They first kissed way back in Iron Man v1 #19 (1969)... but she didn't know he was Iron Man, then.) Bethany Cabe finds out -- or rather, reveals to Whitney Frost that she'd already figured it out -- in 1980, in Iron Man v1 #139. She doesn't tell Tony she knows until Iron Man v1 #152, in 1981 -- they're captured and she urges him to change into Iron Man. (So, yeah, this means that while Demon in a Bottle is happening and Bethany is helping Tony get sober, she most likely doesn't know he's Iron Man.)
And then there's Avengers v1 #216, which I am sure we all already know about. The Molecule Man strips Tony out of his armor, meaning that his identity is revealed to Thor (who already knew), the Silver Surfer (who doesn't really seem to care), Tigra (who is leaving the team, but this will be relevant in a bit anyway)... and of course, Steve Rogers. Hi, Steve.
This is where it becomes important that Tony's secret identity is still a secret. No one he's told tells anyone else. Even now that some of the Avengers know, he doesn't, say, rush out and tell the rest of the Avengers that he's really Iron Man. Instead, in Avengers v1 #224, he starts dating Jan, and he doesn't tell her he's Iron Man. Steve and Thor both encourage him to tell her, and he does, at which point she breaks up with him because she doesn't want to date another teammate so soon after leaving Hank.
Then the second drinking arc happens, which is when we get a couple more identity reveals -- Rhodey and Clint, specifically. Rhodey finds out when Tony has started drinking again. Tony reveals his identity to Rhodey in IM v1 #179 (1983), and then he passes out in the armor and Rhodey puts it on and becomes Iron Man and goes off to fight the villain of the issue. After Tony eventually sobers up, he and Rhodey and the Erwins make their way to the West Coast. When Rhodey joins the brand-new WCA, Tigra is confused because she knew Tony was Iron Man and this guy isn't Tony, but it's all sorted out eventually. (Similarly, some of Tony's villains are confused when they run into Rhodey as Iron Man -- the Mandarin says he'd suspected Iron Man was Tony but now obviously he must have been wrong.) Anyway, Tony outs himself to Clint and Bobbi in Iron Man v1 #193 (1985); he suits up in his old armor to go talk to Clint, and when Clint doesn't trust him, unmasks himself as Tony Stark. And when Tony becomes Iron Man again, he eventually joins the WCA and stays in California.
After this... well, okay, after this is where my reading gets patchy, honestly.  Armor Wars happens, and Tony comes up with a fake identity for Iron Man and then fakes Iron Man's death at the end of it -- I think this was to fool SHIELD, but I know that Steve et al. still know who Tony is. I don't think there are a whole lot of big reveals, but I get the sense that Tony's identity eventually becomes basically an open secret in the superhero community. There's a panel somewhere from the 80s or early 90s where Natasha is thinking that they all know already and Tony should just tell them. Note that the general public still doesn't know; this is only among Tony's fellow heroes.
The latest individual reveal I know of is after volume 3 starts, when Tony reveals his identity to Carol in Iron Man v3 #7 (1998). It's the middle of the Live Kree Or Die arc, in which Carol has been kicked off the Avengers for her drinking problem. Tony shows up at her door as Iron Man and then decides that he can relate to her better in this case as Tony Stark, alcoholic. It's clearly new information to her.
And then there's the Captain America & Iron Man 1998 Annual, which actually came out in 1999, apparently. Tony cybernetically fights a villain named Mentallo. In the course of the fight, Mentallo learns Tony's secret identity, but when Tony wins he gets the chance to erase it from his mind, which he does. He then realizes he can erase it from everyone's minds. He's thinking of all the villains who have found out over the years -- he names Spymaster, The Controller, Molecule Man, and Machinesmith, and even I can add a few more to that list. (There's Kraken, at least, and the Mandarin definitely suspected.) So Tony wipes everyone's minds, including his friends'. But via the magic of Comic Science, if he retells them right away it will be like they never forgot. So he calls a meeting of a bunch of Avengers (Vision, Thor, Jan, Steve, Hank, Wanda, Simon -- and later Happy and Pepper) and tells them his identity again, and everyone takes it really well, except for Steve, who gets mad about having his mind wiped, which is the plot of the book. He says he's going to tell a few more people who "deserve the same courtesy" and mentions wanting to find Clint. I assume he retells most of the superhero community (or at least his friends), but this isn't explicitly stated.
And in 2002, in Iron Man v3 #55, Tony unmasks to save a puppy, and the entire world finds out he's Iron Man. (This includes Rumiko, who he's dating at the time.) He continues to have a public identity for the remainder of v3, but during everything that happens during Disassembled, he manages to successfully hide his identity once again and get the world as a whole believing that Tony and Iron Man are two different people.
Even during Disassembled, it's clear that the superhero community still knows who he is -- in Avengers Finale (2005), he assembles a bunch of familiar Avengers in the ruins of the mansion (he's in armor but unmasked -- which, y'know, that's a dead giveaway there) and tells them, "I was able to put the genie back in the bottle as far as my secret identity is concerned. Most people believe that Tony Stark and Iron Man are now two completely different people. I would never ask any of you to outright lie for me, but if it comes up -- if you could at least not say anything to contradict me. I would appreciate it."
So New Avengers kicks off and the team moves into the tower and so on and so forth and Tony keeps his superhero identity secret from the public until... 2006. Nope, it doesn't take long at all. Civil War kicks off and Tony unmasks at a press conference in Civil War: Front Line #1 so that he can, essentially, show he's not a hypocrite for supporting Registration. He pulls his helmet off and says, "Hello, my name is Tony Stark, and I am an alcoholic. And now it's time to come clean."
And that's the one that stuck. So after 2006, everyone knows Tony Stark is Iron Man. (Fun fact: after the brain deletion, Tony's not going to remember that he did this, so he ought to wake up still thinking he has a secret identity. I don't think canon has ever explored this fact.)
So there you have it: my best attempt at putting together a chronology of Tony's identity issues.
