Be it a hot-take or not, Demons of the Punjab, belongs in the Top 5 all time best stories in Doctor Who.
Tumblr media
Instead of being about silly sci-fi monsters or the checkered inner-workings of the Doctor (two things I deeply enjoy btw), we spend the length of a very cinematic and beautiful episode witnessing a tragedy on a deeply human scale. Tragedy and hope intertwined; how else could one possibly cope...
Love to all the episodes everyone would likely place into contention to hypothetically keep this story at a lower rank...but I'm going to make space at the table for the spirit of 13's era.
Tumblr media
The monsters of the week being humble servitors of the dead is such a sweet plot twist that deepens the extent of the narrative. The Doctor is powerful but she can't stop this event; or events like this. The tension that comes to a head in this episode represents a struggle far greater than any one battle or war. No sonic warbling can stop the tide of human pride; of our systems built to create 'order' that leave ruin and heartbreak.
Attempting to put it to words, even in summation, highlights the gravity of the subject matter this episode invokes. Instead of navigating those waters by diving in as I am inclined to do, the cast and crew highlight a beautiful and vibrant world for us to see and by story's end we watch that world be torn apart by an ultimatum unseen. A hatred that festers in people's hearts through fear of uncertainty and the corrosion that imperialism left in its wake.
Tumblr media
But we witness love. However fleeting it may have been. We witnessed it and by seeing it, we're given the hope we so desperately need.
Tumblr media
Death comes for us all but before it does we can make that choice to open our hearts to others. They may not be receptive to it...they may even fight us on it.
Even if our circumstances fail to afford us any other opportunity, love will always be a choice.
Tumblr media
Yasmin succeeded at meeting her grandmother when she was young and learned why the story Nani Umbreen refused to tell her was being kept secret all these years. She witnessed the pain of that moment in a way words would never quite illustrate. Even the events Umbreen knew were not the complete story; even that which Yaz was able to see.
The Doctor couldn't stop those events from happening but helped to guide a path forward through the darkness in a way only she could.
Tumblr media
Stories like this remind me of how powerful the medium of Doctor Who is...and how flexible it will always be.
It's not all mops of curly hair, long scarves, and Allons-y! Occasionally it's a clever way of reminding ourselves of the pain we cause, the pain we keep, the love we had, and the love we still have to give.

What's god to a woman's love anyway
Ranjha became deewana (mad) in his love for Heer, even though he could not marry her. Heer was married off to another man, yet Ranjha kept loving, loving her a little more with each passing day. He trusted his love, he trusted her with his love. And what power did Heer's family hold —mere humans as they were— to separate lovers who loved with such sincerity? What's the rules of the world, compared to a woman's love? What's stronger— the hatred spewed by the world or the love of determined lovers? So they were to unite in holy matrimony, until Heer trusted her uncle enough, consuming food that had been poisoned. Upon the incident coming to his knowledge, Ranjha was quick to follow, eating from the same bowl as of Heer, falling dead by her side. So they were united, finally, in spite of the zehr-e-nafrat (poison of hatred) spewed by the jahaan (world).
kyon-kay aakhir aik toh hona hee tha, chahey duniya-jahaan ke iss taraf ho ya uss taraf.
highly inspired by maybecowboycore's original post.

My Phantom OT3 brainrot is not going away, and now, against my will, I’ve come up with something resembling a (very sappy and ridiculous) short story idea. I’m writing it here to vent it:
I have a headcanon that, despite his many other musical talents, Erik is not good at dancing -- he knows it in theory just fine, but actually practicing it requires a partner who’s willing to touch you, and he’s never had that.
So in my vaguely-imagined AU where Christine and Raoul take him with them at the end (and the three of them leave France for a time while they all heal and Figure Things Out), Raoul decides to teach him. The book (which I have read, though my vague AU is kind of a mishmash of that and the musical) describes that Raoul was mostly raised by his older sisters and other female relatives, so I like to imagine that they taught him ballroom dancing when he was a kid, and he just copies their methods exactly when teaching another man to dance:
Raoul: Just put your hand on my waist. Erik: We are not doing this. Raoul: Come on, lead me!

Views on Moksha through the lens of Vaishnavas
All Vaishnavas in general hold with the concept of VAIKUṆṬHA as the final goal, but there is much debate about what exactly this entails.
N.B. Vai-kuṇṭha literally means the unimpeded or unobstructed state.
There are two views:-
The Personalist View.
Many believe that it is like a “heaven” (svarga) of sorts where liberated devotees will enjoy the blissful company of the Lord Śrīman Nārāyaṇa for all eternity, spending their time in divine service and the chanting of devotional hymns. Details can be found in the Sri Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam allegedly composed by Ramānujācārya although there is some dispute but its authorship as its style is not in keeping with the other works of Rāmānujācārya.
Another description can be found in Bhagavata Purana Sk 2 chap 9 ;9
The Impersonalist View
The liberated one (mukta) merges with the Supreme Being losing all sense of individuality.
I for one, am more inclined towards the Impersonalist view enunciated in the Vishnu Purāna - a state which is transcendent and inconceivable.
viśuddhaṃ bodhanaṃ nityam ajam akṣayam avyayam |
avyaktam avikāraṃ yat tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam ||
na sthūlaṃ na ca sūkṣmam yan-na viśeṣaṇa ‘gocaram |
tat padaṃ paramaṃ viṣṇoḥ praṇamāmaḥ sadāmalam ||
That which is the Supreme State (Paramam Padam – Vaikunṭham) of Vishnu is pure, conscious, eternal, unborn, undecayable, inexhaustible, unmanifest, immutable, It is neither gross nor subtle, nor capable of being defined, to that ever immaculate Supreme State of Vishnu I bow. V.P 1:9:50 – 51
प्रधान-पुरुषाव्यक्त-कालानां परमम् हि यत् । पश्यन्ति सूरयः शुद्धम् तद् विष्णोः परमम् पदम् ॥
pradhāna-puruṣāvyakta-kālānāṃ paramam hi yat | paśyanti sūrayaḥ śuddham tad viṣṇoḥ paramam padam ||
What is beyond matter, spirit, manifestation, and time; that pure [state] which sages behold - that is the supreme state of Vishnu. (Vishnu Purana 1.2.16)

BJP's Solo Run: Lok Sabha Election 2024 Dynamics in Punjab
In a significant development ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced its decision to contest the polls in Punjab without forming an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). This decision marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Punjab, traditionally characterized by the alliance between the BJP and SAD. The announcement came after a meeting between senior BJP leaders and party members in Punjab, where it was decided that the BJP would field its candidates independently in the upcoming elections.
The decision to contest alone in Punjab reflects the BJP's strategic reevaluation of its electoral alliances and priorities in the state. While the BJP has been a long-standing ally of the SAD in Punjab, recent political developments and changing dynamics have prompted the party to reassess its electoral strategy. By opting to contest alone, the BJP aims to assert its independent political identity in the state and strengthen its electoral prospects by directly engaging with voters on its own terms.
The BJP's decision to go solo in Punjab has sparked speculation about the potential implications for the state's political landscape and the broader dynamics of national politics. Punjab has traditionally been a stronghold of regional parties such as the SAD and the Indian National Congress (INC), with the BJP playing a supporting role in alliance politics. However, with the BJP now charting its independent course, the electoral equations in Punjab are likely to witness a significant realignment.
The decision also underscores the BJP's confidence in its organizational strength and electoral appeal in Punjab. By contesting alone, the party aims to capitalize on its grassroots network, organizational structure, and popular support base to maximize its electoral gains in the state. This move reflects the BJP's determination to expand its political footprint beyond traditional strongholds and emerge as a formidable force in Punjab's political landscape.
Meanwhile, the announcement has triggered reactions from various political stakeholders, with the SAD expressing disappointment over the BJP's decision. The SAD, which has been grappling with internal challenges and leadership transitions, had earlier indicated its willingness to continue the alliance with the BJP. However, the BJP's unilateral decision has now thrown the future of the alliance into uncertainty, prompting the SAD to explore alternative electoral strategies.
As the political dynamics continue to evolve in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP's decision to contest alone in Punjab sets the stage for a keenly contested electoral battle in the state. With both regional and national parties vying for supremacy, Punjab is poised to witness a fiercely contested electoral landscape, where every political move will shape the trajectory of the state's politics in the years to come.

genuinely if you fell off at some point early in Moffat or Chibnall's run and don't want to slog through a bunch of stuff you don't think you'll enjoy here are some recommendations:
Tumblr media
if you dropped off during the Matt Smith years then I'd recommend giving Peter Capaldi a shot. The writing is not always 100% but Capaldi is outstanding in the role. A couple of standalone ep highlights are Flatline, Listen & Mummy on the Orient Express. Heaven Sent is also excellent but a bit more arc heavy.
Tumblr media
If you've seen some Capaldi before but didn't finish, I'd recommend picking up again with season 10. Moffat's final season, Twelfth Doctor + Bill Potts + Michelle Gomez as the Master. It's a run of very solid standalone eps w minimal story arc. Also Bill is a lesbian and she's great. Some good standalone eps are Smile, Thin Ice and Oxygen.
Tumblr media
If you never watched any Chibnall who, you can jump straight in with Jodie Whittaker's first episode. completely new TARDIS team and very different vibes from Moffat who. A couple of highlights would be Rose, Demons of the Punjab, The Witchfinders, & Fugitive of the Judoon.
Tumblr media
if you found Chibnall's early seasons boring, you might find Flux a lot more vibrant & dynamic. it's a six-part story arc featuring Yasmin Khan and new companion Dan Lewis. it's got sontarans, weeping angels, a whole species of furry dog people, AND bunch of really neat new supporting characters.
Tumblr media
& also if you liked Flux I'd also warmly recommend the Near Year's special that came immediately after it, Eve of the Daleks, which is a GENUINE blast.
hope this is of use to someone!! it's like 10 years of TV to slog through at this point and some of it is uhhh u know but there's a lot of really good stuff in there that's worth checking out.

i've been looking for older travelogues that are not the very common 'man goes to colony' type story. Found an interesting one! exactly the opposite!
"Atiya's Journeys: A Muslim Woman from Colonial Bombay to Edwardian Britain
More than a century ago, Atiya Fyzee, a Muslim woman of the renowned Tyabji clan, set out from colonial Bombay to study in Edwardian London. As she rode the steamboat, she began writing her daily experiences in a diary that would later appear as serialized entries in an Urdu women’s magazine published from the Punjab. Despite the magazine’s small circulation at the time, Atiya’s travelogue drew enough attention and gave the fledgling author her first taste of fame. In the years to come, she also became well known for her friendship with Maulana Shibli Numani and Muhammad Iqbal, two of South Asia’s most prominent Muslim intellectuals. Atiya and her husband Samuel Rahamin gained popularity worldwide in the early twentieth century in the fields of music, dance, theatre, the visual arts, and literature. Atiya Fyzee became a key figure in the cultural and intellectual history of South Asia. Atiya’s legend, sometimes contradictory and often exoticized, was formed in the last years of her life when she lived in Karachi after the Partition. This is a fascinating account of a Muslim women’s experience of ‘everyday’ in Edwardian Britain."

Would it be problematic for me to have a black girl convert to sikhi over the course of the story with the assistance of her Sikh friend & the friend’s family and then get married to said friend in the future? I don’t want it to seem like she did it simply to be with her friend so I thought that maybe if I showed how she enjoys hearing things about the religion (for example how sikhi emphasizes treating everyone equally and also the protection of those facing injustice) from her friend that it could seem more natural but could that be seen as fetishizing? The black girl has been friends with the family for 10+ years (aka since she was 8) and also wasn’t raised following any religion (but not as an atheist either) so I feel the conversion would be somewhat easy for her but if any of what I’ve wrote is problematic I’ll change it! I’m still doing research so if I messed anything up I’m extremely sorry. Thank you in advance!
Black woman converts to become Sikh - Is this problematic?
If SK thinks these circumstances are okay from the Sikhism standpoint, then absolutely it is fine. Black people are all individual and different people throughout the diaspora. We are not some collective monolith with a build-in set of interests, beliefs and rules on what we can and cannot do! The real question to me is if someone can convert to Sikhism and if so, how being Black factors into the lifestyle.
On that note, I will hand the mic to SK and also welcome Black Sikh followers to chime in.
-Colette
Sikhi accept converts
Short answer: No, it is not problematic. Sikhi accepts converts. There’s nothing wrong with being drawn to a faith because of certain aspects and then looking deeper and choosing to convert.
Longer answer: Conversion into a completely new faith is rarely easy. I would say Sikhi is a harder faith to convert to because there are few resources in other languages and many Sikhs are unaccustomed to converts. As in most, if not all, religions, there is a gap between what is said and how it’s practiced.
Despite the messages about fighting injustice and treating others equally, many Sikh converts, especially Black Sikhs, deal with prejudice. This is not even unique to converts - Afghan & Kashmiri Sikhs have also faced ignorant comments from Punjabi Sikhs who aren’t aware of Sikh communities outside Punjab. The 1980’s-1990’s Sikh genocide disconnected many Sikhs in Punjab from the revolutionary messages of justice and equality laid out in Sikh holy texts.
A challenge unique to Black Sikhs is that the way kesdhari Sikhs take care of their hair and tie it in turbans can be a challenge for someone with Black hair. I would recommend Gurpreet Kaur’s writing.

Arshi FF : Pandora’s Box
Author : Munchy
Status : Completed and available on Munchy’s blog
Genre : Romance, Angst, Tragedy
“Keep reading” for my two cents on the story. Minor spoilers ahead. Warnings at the end of the review.
My first serious caution for this story, this isn’t for the faint of heart. If you like your Arnav and Khushi wrapped up in the comfort and warmth of love, away from any and all kinds of hurt and especially morally grey situations, you should probably skip this one. But if you’re a fan of ethereal writing, imperfect characters and a tear jerking angst fest with a side of passionate Arshi, dive right in.
The story’s tagline is ‘That life is a circle is a myth. It spirals’. And that’s exactly one feels reading the story.
Munchy’s story begins in the 1940s, with British ruled India at the brink of partition. While ASR here is Arnav Singh Raizada, KKG is Khushi Kauser Ghilani, two neighbors about to be swept in a whirlwind. The author paints a stunning visual of Punjab and you will find yourself literally back in time with her words. Arnav is back to his ancestral home after his upbringing in English schools and high society of delhi, while Khushi Ghilani had enjoyed a free reign over all the love Arnav’s family could bestow on their lovely neighbor in their small part of the town.
An unfortunate first meet in a Mango Orchard turns our protagonists sour (of course Arnav and Khushi will fight. Duh uh), but they soon find themselves in the web of undeniable attraction towards each other. And right when they’re dealing with minor issues like the first wave of teenage love and heartbreak, the country goes through one of its darkest periods and their lives are turned upside down overnight.
Pointed out to me once in a discussion and I wholeheartedly agree, one of the things that caught me off guard about this fanfic was the portrayal of impact of partition on day to day life of children. You see the worsening environment from their eyes, when suddenly the families and friends they grew up with are now considered enemies. When they can’t be as carefree as they would have loved with their doting neighbours; because now their different faith comes first. Those chapters had me in a chokehold and I’ve read through them with eyes full of tears. The whole story feels like a ticking time bomb when it begins, and it blows up right in your face. Social practices prevalent at that time will also make you want to puke your insides out.
And over the base of all this anguish and tragedy, Arnav and Khushi are looking to build a life together. It hurts every step of the way, so when the small moments of happiness come along you will soak it all up as a reader.
But fair warning, this is Munchy writing angst. And it will make itself known! Every story that I’ve read from her leaves my heart longing for something more, anger at having fate play a cruel role, and almost clawing my brain out, wishing I can get into those pages and fix the whole world for my beloved pair. But as always, life and Munchy’s stories aren’t fair. They’re however emotional, beautiful and extraordinary!
Warnings- Cheating, Violence, Underage Sex
