🍓Harvest Strawberry DNA w/ Jotaro!🍓

Did you know that you can make your very own DNA extraction kit?

You can use household chemicals to separate DNA from strawberries just like Jotaro by following the steps below!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

1 Resealable Plastic Bag

2 Strawberries (Fresh or Frozen)

2 tsp of Dish Detergent

1 tsp of Salt

1/2 cup of Water

2 Plastic Cups

1 Coffee Filter

1/2 cup COLD Rubbing Alcohol

1 Coffee Stirrer

1 Test Tube (Optional)

PROCEDURE:

Step 1: Remove the green leaves from the strawberries.

Step 2: Place the strawberries into the plastic bag, seal it, and gently smoosh the contents for approximately 2 minutes. Make sure to completely crush the strawberries!

Step 3: In a plastic cup, create your DNA extraction fluid; 2tsp dish detergent + 1tsp salt + 1/2 cup water.

Step 4: Add 2tsp of the DNA extraction liquid to the strawberry goop.

Step 5: Reseal the bag and continue squishing the strawberries for another minute. Be sure to avoid making too many soap bubbles in the process!

Step 6: Place the coffee filter into the unused plastic cup.

Step 7: Open the bag and carefully pour the strawberry goop into the filter. (Tip: Try twisting the filter and gently squeezing the remaining fluid into the cup!)

Step 8: Pour an equal amount of chilled rubbing alcohol as there is strawberry liquid down the side of the cup. Do not mix or stir the solution! You have just isolated the DNA!

Step 9: Watch the strawberry DNA develop in the top layer. This will look like a white, cloudy substance floating just on top of the strawberry liquid.

Step 10: Carefully tilt the cup and pick up the DNA using a coffee stirrer.

Step 11 (Optional): Place the DNA into a test tube for safekeeping!
