A Night In Venice
(a short story I wrote)
In Italy, a certain time ago (though it still stands today, I'm sure) there was a city called Venice. It was beautiful, and lively, with its old buildings and old statues and canals and gondolas. It was old, yes, but also full of life.
And in that city, there lived a girl.
Her name was Eleanor, but she preferred to be called Lea. She was looking for the mayor, who was her brother. But she couldn't find him, so she wandered the streets of Venice in search of him.
This was a little difficult for her, as the streets of the town were quite busy that night. You see, that night there was a carnival, a procession of dancers and singers in masks and costumes parading down the streets. It was always some carnival or another in Venice... Venetians loved their carnivals.
(Do they still today? I haven't been there is so long.)
-
Lea walked, and walked, through the masquerade and the costumed dancers and the merchants by the street-side and the gondolas in the canal, and she met some people.
-
On her way, she met a baker, her apron covered in flour and sugar in her sandy-blonde hair. Her eyes were warm and cheerful.
"Hello," said the baker. "Would you care for a pastry?"
"No thank you," said Lea, looking at the display in the bakery's window. "But they look delicious."
In the window, she saw cakes of every height imaginable; icing of every colour, with sugar-spun flowers gently resting atop little cupcakes and jam tarts and chocolate croissants, nut pies and berry pies and fruit pies and cream pies, large loaves of bread and twisted pretzels, bumpy buns and round flatbreads and long baguettes, sugar-dusted doughnuts with colourful sprinkles and cookies with nuts and raisins and chocolate and dry, crispy biscuits ready to be dipped in hot tea or warm chocolate.
"Have you seen the mayor?" Lea asked once she turned away from the window. "I'm looking for him."
"Oh, yes! I did," the baker smiled. "He went over there, I believe."
She pointed down the street.
"And here," the baker added, "for you. Good luck finding him!"
She gave Lea a little sweet, wrapped in white-and-gold paper.
"Oh," said Lea, "thank you!"
She ate the sweet, which tasted like honey and meted on her tongue, and she walked on.
-
"Come, come join us," cried a dancer who was wearing a bird's mask, feathered in brown and grey and white. His arms were hidden under feathers so thick they could have been wings, and he had a grey feathery tail. "Dance with us!"
"I'd love to," said Lea, "but I have to find the mayor. Have you seen him?"
But the dancer had already twirled away, flapping his arms like wings.
So she walked on.
-
She walked on, and she met an old woman.
The old woman had long, straight grey hair that hung heavy on her shoulders and she was sitting on a small bench, holding a bag of breadcrumbs and feeding the pigeons that fluttered at her feet.
"Hello," said Lea.
"Hello," said the old woman. She turned to Lea and gave her a small, wrinkled smile. Her eyes were a startling, bright blue.
"Do you know if the mayor came this way?" Lea asked. "I'm looking for him."
A pigeon flew up onto the bench beside the old woman as she thought.
The old woman nodded. "He stopped to feed the pigeons a moment, and then I believe he left to go that way." She pointed down the street, towards a bookshop. "Would you like to feed the pigeons?"
"Alright," said Lea, "but not for long."
She took a handful of breadcrumbs from the old woman's bag and scattered them on the ground. The pigeons flapped towards the bread and cooed.
One pigeon landed on her shoulder. Lea laughed, and it flapped back down in alarm.
"I should go," Lea said. "Thank you."
The old woman hummed. "Thank you as well."
So she walked on.
-
"Come," said a dancer, dressed all in yellow with a sun-shaped mask and ribbons hanging from their arms like streamers that flapped when they moved. "Dance with us!"
"No, thank you," said Lea. "I have somewhere to be."
The sun dancer shrugged and moved away.
So she walked on.
-
On her way, she met the bookseller, standing outside his shop.
"Hello," said the bookseller with a friendly smile and a wave. "It's a nice night, isn't it?"
"It is." Lea returned his smile.
"Would you care to come in my shop and see my books?" He asked. "I'm sure I have something you might like."
Lea looked at the shop, and she saw warm light coming from inside. There were a few people there, browsing the shelves and taking out books and placing them back.
"I have books that could make you sail the seas," the bookseller said. "I have books that could help you leave everything behind, and live between their pages instead. You could touch the sky and taste the clouds. You could fight beasts of old and fall in love in a hundred different ways. You could shiver with fear or you could laugh with joy. You could live the legends of eons past or see the future through another's mind. Won't you come sample my books?"
"That sounds lovely," Lea said with a small smile. It did. "But I have somewhere I must be. Please, tell me; have you seen the mayor?"
"Why, I have," nodded the bookseller. "He passed by not so long ago. He went in that direction."
The bookseller pointed down the street.
"Thank you!" Lea said brightly. "Enjoy the evening."
So she walked on.
-
"Oh, won't you dance with us?" Asked a dancer, face hidden behind a flat, square mask, painted half pale purple and half grey, with clothes similarly split between the two colours. The mask's eye-holes were so thin Lea couldn't see the eyes behind, and a large white hat hid their hair. "Come, join the celebration!"
"I'd love to," said Lea, "but I have somewhere to be. Do you know where the mayor is? I'm looking for him..."
But the dancer had already turned away, arm in arm with another masked stranger.
So she walked on.
-
She walked on, and she met a painter, standing on the side of the street and painting something on an easel with various paintings leaning on the wall behind her.
The finished paintings on the wall were lovely to look at; Lea saw a sunset, so low that the sun was a red sliver on the horizon and the sky had faded to a quiet purple and black. Little sprays of white paint were splattered on the sky like stars, and the top half of the painting was mirrored in a rippling reflection on the lake below the sun.
Another painting on the wall was of people at the carnival; they had colourful masks of all shapes (long and thin and round and square) and equally colourful clothes of all patterns (diamonds and spots and checkers and stripes). The people in the painting were all dancing; the moon bright and full above the canal behind them as they twisted and turned like wisps of smoke, captured in the painting like a moment snatched from time.
A third painting was of the canal during the day; but there were no people in it. There were gondolas floating in the water, unmoored and empty, and the water looked flat and calm. The whole painting was in shades of blue and grey, the brightest blue being the sky overhead and the dullest grey being the empty gondolas.
Another painting was of a woman in a dark blue dress. Her back was turned and so was her head, her arms outstretched up, up, so that her fingertips just brushed the top of the canvas. Her hair was painted the palest yellow, almost white, and it flew loose and untied around the woman's shoulders. Her dress was flying in an unknown wind, too, and the canvas behind her was simply painted in a few different shades of green. The shapes in the distance might have been hills, or mountains, or perhaps a forest.
The last painting was still on the easel, unfinished, and the painter was peering at it.
The painter had light brown hair, pulled up in a black cap, and sky-blue eyes. No... sea-blue eyes. Grey, green, blue, always shifting. She had a scattering of little paint droplets on her face that looked a little like freckles. There was paint on her clothes and hands as well.
"Oh, hello," she said once she noticed Lea.
Lea waved. "Your paintings are lovely," she said.
"Thank you," said the painter. "Tell me, what do you think of this one?" She pointed, with her paintbrush, to the easel in front of her and went back to mixing paint on her palette.
The painting was of a woman, from the waist up. She was wearing a brown vest over an olive-green shirt and was holding up a white feathery quill. Her skin was painted the richest brown and her hair was charcoal black, curling to her shoulders. Her eyes were grey, dark, and mysterious. She seemed to be staring into the distance, lost in thought. The paint on the eyes and hair was still wet.
"Beautiful," Lea said, amazed. "Who is she?"
"I love her," said the painter with a sigh. She added another shade of black over the hair on the painting. "But I cannot seem to get her hair right. Her hair is raven's wing black; this is charcoal black. It doesn't softly reflect the light of the moon as she does. I can't seem to finish the painting, just as I can't confess my love."
"Maybe you should talk to her," Lea suggested. "Show her the painting. I'm sure she'll love it."
"Ah," said the painter, "but I couldn't. It's unfinished, you see. The hair isn't quite perfect and I can't seem to catch that sparkle in her eye as she concentrates."
"Oh," said Lea.
"Her words are beautiful, and perfect, as she is." The painter lowered the brush and inspected the result. "I would need for this painting to be just as beautiful and perfect for me to believe it worthy of her."
"I see. Well, good luck," Lea said. "Have you seen the mayor? I'm looking for him."
"I think he want that way," the painter said, pointing down the street, to a shop with flowers around its entrance.
"Thank you!" Said Lea. "I hope you can finish your painting."
"Thank you," said the painter, swirling purple and black and blue and grey together into the colour of a raven's wing, "and I hope you find the mayor."
So she walked on.
-
"Join the dance!" Called a dancer, her long red-and-white striped dress swirling around her ankles. She wore a white half-mask, covering one eye and cheek. Her hair was dark brown and tied into a loose braid. She extended a red gloved hand to Lea.
"I'm sorry," said Lea. "I can't. But I'm looking for the mayor. Do you know where he is?"
But the dancer shook her head and shrugged. "No. But forget about him— just dance!"
"No thank you," said Laura. "Enjoy your evening!"
The dancer twirled away, skirts swishing.
So she walked on.
-
She walked on, and she met a florist, selling his flowers in front of his shop.
"Hello," said the florist. "Might I interest you in some flowers?"
"Hello," said Lea. "No thank you. I'm just looking for the mayor. Have you seen him?"
"Hmm. Let me think." The florist scratched his red-brown beard, considering.
While he thought, Lea looked at his flowers.
They were beautiful, and looked as if they had been freshly picked; there were the reddest roses and the most vibrantly orange carnations and the yellowest tulips and the greenest stems and the bluest cornflowers and the brightest purple violets and the whitest lilies. They all smelled like the richest of perfumes.
"Your flowers are lovely," Lea said with a smile.
"Thank you," proudly replied the florist. "And I do recall seeing the mayor; he went that way."
The florist pointed down the street, towards a small café with tables overlooking the canal.
So she walked on.
-
"Dance with us!" Said a dancer who stopped in front of her for a moment, a young man with black-and-purple patterned clothes and a long black cape, with dark skin and eyes and hair and a round, swirling purple mask that covered his eyes and forehead. "Come on!"
"I'd love to, really," Lea said with a smile. "But I'm looking for the mayor. I have to find him."
The dancer tilted his head at her, but then pointed down the street, pointing to the same café the florist had pointed at.
"Thank you," Lea said, and the young man bowed and turned, cape swishing, to re-join the other dancers.
So she walked on.
-
She walked on, and she met a poet, sitting at a small table in the café that had a nice view of the canal.
On the table in front of the poet, there were many papers strewn about, most covered in writing and splashes of ink. The poet had skin of the richest brown, and raven's wing black hair that caught the moonlight when she shook her head. There were ink stains on her fingers.
"Hello," said Lea, walking up to the table.
"Hello," said the poet, looking up. She handed Lea a paper. "Does this seem right to you?"
Lea read the paper. It said;
Your hands have the skill of a creator You shape with those hands, worlds Worlds of beauty, of life Of sadness, of strife I see in your eyes inspiration, vision And I think, my love, Would you let me hold those hands Those hands that shape my life?
"Oh," said Lea, handing the paper back. "It's lovely."
"But is it perfect?" The poet sighed, placing the paper back down and picking up another. She crossed out a few words on that one and started writing again. "I can never quite find the right words. They slip through my fingers like the wind slips through the tall grass; teasing, just barely there, and it just doesn't sound like I'd want it to."
"I think it's rather beautiful, still," Lea says. "But I'm not a poet. I suppose you'd know best."
"I love her," sighs the poet. "But I cannot seem to find the words to tell her. I write her poem after poem, word after word, but I never have a poem perfect enough to give to her. She paints, she creates art, she puts beauty into the world; I want the words I write for her to be as breathtaking and perfect as she is."
"I see," Lea said. "Well, good luck. I'm looking for the mayor; have you seen him?"
"Oh, I think I did," the poet said. "I believe he went that way."
She pointed to the left side of the street, to a little shop with someone sitting outside it.
"Thank you," Lea said. "I hope you can find the right words."
"Thank you," said the poet, and she turned back to her paper, writing, I would climb to the heavens and pick all the stars for you if you needed them to mix into your paint. Then she placed the paper aside and picked up a new one.
So she walked on.
-
"Join the dance!" Offered a dancer in a forest-green dress, long-sleeved and high-collared, with frills from the waist down. They smiled from beneath their green-gray mask that was shaped a little like an upside-down triangle, with leaves and small vines tangled in their waist-length red hair.
"No, thank you," Lea said. "I can't right now. I'm looking for..."
But the dancer had already glided away to twirl around someone else.
So she walked on.
-
She walked on, and she met a clock-maker. He was an old, wizened man with a long beard and small glasses, sitting on a chair outside his shop and tinkering with a watch as he watched the people dancing.
"Hello," he said when she walked up to him. "How are you?"
"I'm well," she said. "Thank you. And you?"
The old man chuckled, fishing a little gear out of the watch with a small pair of tweezers. "I'm all right, I suppose." He hummed. "Time flies, doesn't it?"
"It does," Lea agreed.
"You still have so much time left," he said, peering at her over his small glasses. Then he looked down again and twisted something in the watch. "Best not to let it fly away too soon, eh? Though it doesn't very much like being kept in a cage. In my experience, I've found that it's best to simply make friends with time, and it'll fly by your side at an easy pace."
"I'll be sure to remember that," Lea said. "Have you seen the mayor? I've been looking for him."
"Yes, he was headed that way," the clock-maker said with a smile, pointing down the street.
"Thank you!" Said Lea, and she continued on her way while the clockmaker wondered why it was that on carnival nights, time that flew and rushed seemed to stop, and let the night dragged on, as if it, too, wanted to wait as dance a while with the music and life of the carnival.
So she walked on.
-
"Hey!" Called a fiddler, who was playing a catchy and upbeat tune for the dancers to spin to. "Come join the dance, won't you?"
He was wearing blue clothes, lined in silver, and a silver mask that was lined in blue; the mask covered his forehead, his right eye, and his right cheek. He was wearing a large blue cap that flopped to the side, and his golden hair was tied back in a short ponytail at the base of his neck.
At his side, there was a flute player, who nodded at her in acknowledgement but didn't stop playing. He was wearing red clothes, lined in gold, and a gold mask, lined in red. His mask was the opposite of the fiddler's, and hair was brown and short.
"Oh, I can't," Lea said. "I'm looking for the mayor. But your music is lovely."
The fiddler laughed, and played even faster, and the dancers around them spun faster and exchanged partners again and again.
"I don't know where he is," the fiddler said, "but he probably went to the inn— it's that way."
He gestured with his chin to the inn at the end of the street.
"Thank you!" Lea said, and she went in that direction.
So she walked on.
-
She went to the inn; she didn't need to enter, however, since she saw her brother, the mayor, coming out and laughing about something.
"Oh!" He said when he noticed her coming her way. "Lea! Hello. What are you doing here?"
She rushed to embrace him. "Nothing really. I just wanted to see you."
He laughed again and embraced her back. "All right," he said with a smile. "And now you've seen me. What now?"
"Let's dance!" She said, taking his hand and pulling him towards the celebrations.
So they danced.
(And time danced alongside them, enjoying itself so much that the night stretched on, and on, and on.)

Note
In a setting where quirks exist but pro heroes aren’t a thing, what do you imagine the future careers of the 1A students would be?
I mean you wouldn't have to remove heroes just to have the kids pick out different jobs. It's not like they could use their Quirks in their jobs any way. Even if they could, that wouldn’t do much to change my opinon. Regardless, I've covered Izuku and Bakugou before, so they won't be included here.
Tumblr media
Sato/Koda/Ojiro: All these are pretty obvious, as they're all natural extensions of their talents. Sato becomes a baker, Koda becomes a veterinarian, and Ojiro becomes a marital arts teacher.
Sero: As weird as it sounds, I think he could be an interior designer. If his room and costume are anything to go by, he has a real eye for aesthetics and can apply that very well to his environment.
Denki: Maybe something in advertising? It would take advantage of his natural extroversion and make him seem at least aware enough of modern trends to talk about them. Barring that, a streamer.
Mineta: Not much to work with here. I guess a programmer? It would let him apply his intelligence and problem solving skills without having to interact with a lot of people.
Aoyama: I wanted to say model given his tendency to attract attention, but I think fashion designer might fit better. If anything, his bizarre fashion might be considered Avant garde in the right circles.
Shoji: Not quite a hero, but I do think he'd still be some civil servant, like a police officer or fireman. He's naturally self sacrificing and good hearted, but has a knack at keeping himself calm and in control.
Tokoyami: I could see him being some kind of famous personality. I could see him as the kind of guy talking about horror movies or streaming online with an extremely gothic aesthetic.
Hagakure: I could see her as some kind of lifestyle expert, like a life coach or guidance counselor. She just has a naturally peppy and positive attitude that I think could help bring out the best in people.
Jiro: Definitely something related to music. While she obviously has the talent to be a musician, I could see her doing more technical music work like her father did.
Kirishima: Personal trainer, without question. Not only because he's someone who exercises a lot, but because he's good at stirring people into action in a positive way.
Mina: Some kind of high energy entertainer. Dancer, influencer, Internet personality. Something that relies on the user getting and keeping the attention of a lot of people.
Shoto: He's a tricky one. He doesn't exactly have any obvious talents or traits for me to work off of. Maybe a model? He's one of the few guys in the series who's ever been noted to be handsome, so I guess that fits.
Uraraka: I get that she could work for her father's construction company, but I think she might be good in some kind of sales job. Not only because of how bubbly and friendly she can be, but also how competitive and motivated she is in the right situations.
Iida: I could easily see him in any of those prestigious jobs that take a lot of schooling, like being a doctor. Given his disposition towards justice and rules in general, I'm thinking lawyer. Specifically, a defense attorney. A police officer might be on the table as well.
Momo: Given her immense intelligence, I feel like she could really be anything. Out of them all, I think she would be in some form of corporate leadership, like a CEO. That or a college level professor given her ability to tutor even the most inexperienced of students.
Tsuyu: While lifeguard is an obvious pick, I think that daycare worker, elementary school teacher, or maybe some kind of therapist might fit. She's patient, sweet, and empathic to people's problems but knows when to wrangle other people in. Plus she has experience with her own siblings.

OK so this is gonna be kind of a nostalgic... rant? I guess? But it also has mentions of mental illnesses and stuff under the cut, so.. discretion is advised.
okay. so.. we all got people we admire, look up to, who make us happy, who encourage us to grow. People who sometimes don't even know us. Idols, singers, dancers, gamers, designers, developers, streamers, artists, bakers, youtubers, stylists, chefs, everything else. For me, YouTubers have helped me stay grounded, stay hopeful, distracted me from how terrible I've felt in the past. One particular YouTuber I have been watching for a good four or five years is a man by the name of CoryxKenshin.
He's one of the funniest people I've encountered on that platform. He's passionate. He's motivated. He's authentic. Original. Selfless. He loves what he does.
But he's been gone for three months. It's unclear when he'll return. Likely when he hits 10 million subscribers. He's at 9.99 mil currently, so here's hoping he returns soon. There are so many games I'm excited to see his take on, like Resident Evil: Village.
Recently I've been feeling down, so I decided to rewatch some of his old videos, including the last video he's uploaded to YouTube thus far: 9 Million; The Home Stretch. I watched this video the day he posted it, but I'd forgotten how down to Earth he was and how motivating he was. It's only a nine minute video, but even in those short minutes, you get a sense of what he was like.
He edits all his videos on his own because he knows his humor. He knows how to make people laugh. And I think that's part of why I love watching him. Everything he gives to us is authentic, 100% made by Cory. Even if he misses a few days of uploading, the Samurai (his subscribers) are fine with that because he's established that he will never upload a video with fake energy. If he has a bad day, he won't try to make it seem like he's having a good day. And I'm sure you guys know YouTubers who are like this as well. I'm not disputing that Cory is the only YouTuber who does this. But seeing him grow from barely one million to nearly ten million is just... so inspiring.
And I know I'm usually very positive and energetic on this site, but I used to have a lot of problems when I was.... Hell, even two years ago I was still going through some shit. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety maybe... four years ago, two years after my parents divorced. I've been on medication for maybe two of those four years, and have gone to therapy for three years. I've only recently stopped going to therapy. I'm telling you all this because I was in a bad place for a long, LONG time. I had trouble reaching out to people and asking for help. I felt like I was bothering them by admitting I wasn't okay. And.. now I see how toxic of a mindset that is. If I hadn't worked up the courage to tell my mom I didn't feel okay anymore, I would be in a much worse place than I am now.
This is where Cory comes in. I found him by random chance one day after a tiring day at school as I was scrolling through YouTube, trying to find something to lift my spirits. And Cory succeeded. He was interesting, exciting, immersed in the game he was playing. Every upload he did made me smile or laugh or at the very least distract me from the outside world. He helped me through some of the worst times I've ever had to experience. And I guess what I'm trying to say... is thank you. Thank you, Cory, for keeping me going, for encouraging me to follow my dreams. For making me smile when I didn't think I could.
His 9 mil special video is honestly the core of what he's about. I encourage everyone to at least go watch that if you're having a bad day or just need a little encouragement, but there's always his other videos like horror games, Spooky Scary Sunday, and Friday Night Funkin. He's honestly a great guy, and I'm very excited for him to come back to YouTube.
Thanks for listening to my tirade, my fellow Samurai brothers and sisters. Never stop dreaming.
Here's a link to his 9 mil special video, and here's a link to his YouTube.

@the-only-gamer-gost‘s WritingTober Day 5: A Female Streamer It’s Niki centric okay?
--------------------------------------
On the corner between the Sweet Shoppe & Bakery and the market stalls, in view of the docks, is where a particular musician calls home. Well it’s not home. He doesn’t live an the streets. But he’s seemingly always at the corner playing music for passersby, hoping for some coin.
- - -
There is a lovely lady who owns the Shoppe. She always leaves the door open. “To entice costumers.” “To keep the airflow. I like the breeze,” she says. But really it’s so that she can hear the music just outside her door.
She has a daughter that works with her. The girl also happens to be with the dance company in Port.
- - -
He has a guitar, which he plays in time to his voice.
He writes his own songs. He sings his own songs. And he’s learning some bigger favourties.
He’s around during the day, while people are milling about. Providing background sound to their days.
The corner always feels empty when he’s got other stuff to do.
- - -
The baker’s daughter. The dancer, would sit outside on the step during down time. She’d watch him play while she did her schoolwork. Occasionally she’d put down her paper and do an improve routine. The two of them in their own little word.
Sometimes he’d have fun with it as well, playing who knows what as he jumps from chord to chord. Singing random strings of words that come to mind.
- - -
She gives him a few coins. She can’t in good conscience take it as free entertainment. She knows that he needs money to live, just as she does.
She even get’s him a couple gigs here and there when the dance company needs a live guitarist.
- - -
Sometimes she sees a pink haired teen leaning against a couple crates. Listening as well.
She’d heard whispers of him. How he goes to the fencing club on weekends. How he’s really good.
She’s never seen him in action. She’s too busy helping her mother close up shop. She’s too busy with schoolwork. She’s too busy trying to get into higher education. She’s too busy practicing choreo.

I keep asking blogs I love what do you think ot23’s jobs/careers would be if they weren’t idols (like not what they said they wanted to become, I mean what job you think would suit each of them. Ex: to me Doyoung gives off surgeon/lawyer vibes & Johnny vet vibes)
Hello, hello!
So I’ve been thinking about this ask a lot ever since you sent it.
This is my only opinion, and it should not be taken seriously, really.
As you can see, I am really bad at imagining what career would suits people.
Taeil: Piano teacher.
Johnny: Photographer, yes, I know, but he is really good at it.
Taeyong: Baker or cook.
Yuta: Florist, and not only because he said he worked as a florist once, but because I can actually see him do that.
Kun: Kindergarten teacher.
Doyoung: I could see him as a lawyer too.
Ten: Choreographer, of course.
Jaehyun: I’m sorry but I see him as a teacher too.
Sicheng: Actor, bring it in Sicheng.
Jungwoo: Nurse, I don’t know why, I feel like his smile, laugh and happiness could work, especially in the pediatric.
Lucas: Model.
Mark: Musician, basic, I know, but it is what it is.
Xiaojun: Give me cute librarian Dejun with his glasses.
Hendery: Game streamer or some shit.
Renjun: Art teacher.
Jeno: Owner of a cat café.
Haechan: Makeup artist, have you seen how good his makeup looks when he is the one doing it.
Jaemin: Travel or wedding photographer.
Yangyang: I see him as a youtuber, flexing with his shoes.
Shotaro: Dancer.
Sungchan: I- I don’t know him enough to have an idea.
Chenle: Maybe some sort of engineer?
Jisung: Give me sweet, shy and a little bit awkward barista.

Begin Again (Mortician!Steve and Baker!Bucky Modern “Moving On” AU)
Thirty-Two:
"You're right on time!" A black woman with fascinating tattoos on her bald head approached them. Easily accepting the boxes of cupcakes that Bucky handed her and led the way into the banquet hall. Glancing over her shoulder to the men, she admitted, "When I got your message this morning, I was afraid that you'd have to cancel."
"Oh, I'd never do that," Bucky assured, making his way around to the concession table.
Bringing up the rear, Steve was more cautious with his boxes. It had taken all day to make these, and he wasn't about to do something stupid like get distracted and drop them. So, he was slower than the other two. Not that they seemed to mind.
However, the set up caught Steve's eye. The rainbow colored streamers and multicolored balloon arches caused his lips to tug upwards. What brought the full force of his smile though was the couples already dancing to the live band. An upbeat jazzy tune had them all moving as though they were no older than teens, even if their gray hair and wrinkles said otherwise.
"When you said prom, I didn't think you meant an actual prom," Steve quietly confessed to Bucky as he started following Bucky's lead by opening the boxes of cupcakes.
"A lot of these people never got to go to their high school proms with the people they really wanted to," the woman informed. She shrugged a shoulder, "So, it's nice to give them this."
"Better late than never," Steve agreed, glancing over the prom goers. His smile growing as he watched two older man holding themselves close as they swayed out of tempo with the music. Wistfully, Steve longed for a love like that.
Redirecting his attention to the concession table, Steve let Bucky arrange the cupcakes on the five-tier round stand. More than happy to hand the reigns over to the brunet since he was the professional. Might've helped that Bucky was damn attractive when he was focused, too.
Eventually, Steve forced himself to look elsewhere so he wouldn't seem creepy. Choosing to watch the older couples act young for at least one night. Enjoying the way that they seemed happy, and hoping that some of their glee would rub off on himself.
"I don't know about you, but this is way more fun than my senior prom," Bucky whispered, playfully nudging Steve's shoulder with his own.
Steve glanced over at Bucky before bashfully dropping his gaze to his feet while he confessed, "Yeah, I definitely wouldn't choose to go back if given the chance."
"I would," Bucky dramatically sighed, then he admitted, "There are some things I'd do differently, if given the chance."
"Yeah?" Steve nodded. Even though the pair had grown closer and gotten to know each other better as adults, and Steve was fairly certain that he knew the real Bucky, he still couldn't help but internally scoff, of course, Jimmy Barnes would want to relive high school.
"Yes," Bucky confirmed, then admitted, "For one, I wouldn't have stayed in the closet for so long."
Surprised, Steve mutely arched a brow at the brunet, but didn't vocally question it. Instead, he let Bucky talk. If he wanted to, that was. However, Bucky, instead, extended his hand to Steve and suggested, "C'mon. Let's dance."
"Seriously?" Steve nervously chuckled while his cheeks heated. Bucky nodded and Steve gestured towards the concession table where the woman was still setting up, "We should get back to work."
"Nonsense," she encouraged, "Go, have fun."
"Thank you, Okoye," Bucky sing-songed, deciding to take Steve's hand since he wasn't moving, and nearly dragged Steve onto the dance floor.
It didn't take long for Bucky to tug Steve around like a rag doll. Bumping hips and shimmying shoulders in time with the upbeat song. Even wiggling his eyebrows to get a laugh out of Steve. For a moment, Steve even forgot about how awful of a dancer he was, and just let Bucky control his movements.
Then, on a mid-twirl, the song changed. Trumpets playing a familiar tune. Something that brought a certain nostalgia to Steve, even though he couldn't quite place it yet.
Before he could think about it too long, Bucky pulled him back into himself. Stumbling over his feet, Steve crashed into Bucky when he turned to face him. Knocking a huff of air out of Bucky in the process, and causing a deep blush to cover Steve's cheeks. Especially once Bucky placed Steve's left hand on his shoulder and placed his own hand on Steve's waist. With their hands, Bucky gave Steve a comforting squeeze before leading.
As Bucky led, he teased, "Ever thought you'd dance with the prom king?"
"No," Steve laughed at the situation. Turning it on Bucky, he questioned, "What about you, Mr. Popular? 'D ever think you'd be dancing with Steve the Peeved?"
"Peeved Steve," Bucky solemnly corrected. He shook his head, and surprised Steve as he said, "I'm really sorry about what happened back then. It wasn't right. And I'm sorry that I didn't do more."
"It's okay," Steve brushed off. Sure, that was everything high school Steve would've loved to hear. But now, as an adult, he didn't know what to do with such an apology.
"It's not," Bucky argued. Briefly biting his lip, as though debating himself, Bucky continued, "Ya know, I tried to jump in one time. Junior year. There were five guys ganging up on ya, and it wasn't right… I think I got three punches in before the principal got me. And since I was a, 'good kid with a bright future,' I was given a warning.
"When you got back from suspension, I tried to talk to you. See if you were okay. But chickened out when my friends caught up to me in the hallway. And I think that's one of the things I regret most. Letting that fear of what others might think, affect me so much," Bucky finally brought his gaze back to Steve's. As if he could get anymore genuine than he already had been, Bucky apologized again, "I'm sorry, Steve. Truly."
"I forgive you," Steve sincerely accepted.
A soft smile tugged at Bucky's lips again as he pulled Steve just a little closer. On stage, the singer crooned, "Never thought that you would be, standing here so close to me."
But Steve was more focused on the way Bucky sang off-key, "There's so much I feel that I should say, but words can wait until some other day."
Taking a huge leap in faith and a stumble into bittersweet, Steve brought himself closer to Bucky. When Bucky didn't pull back, and instead, wrapped his arm more securely around Steve's waist, Steve rested his head on Bucky's broad shoulder. Intimately swaying slowly to the music, Steve could almost pretend that this was his forever.
You'll never know how many dreams I've dreamed about you Or just how empty they all seemed without you

FALLS FESTIVAL FREMANTLE DAY ONE @ Fremantle Oval 4/1/2020
Falls Festival has wrapped for another season, with the final leg of the tour taking place at Fremantle Oval over the weekend.
Huge international acts such as Halsey, Disclosure and Vampire Weekend joined an array of Australian artists over two days in what has become one of the most popular annual music festivals in Western Australia. From power pop to psychedelic rock, Sampa The Great to John Farnham, Falls Festival Fremantle brings something to the table for everybody to enjoy.
Clear skies and a cool ocean breeze make Day 1 the perfect Saturday for a festival. Glitter and sparkles speckle the crowd like confetti, with high fashion in full swing for today’s mixed bag of performances. Bubbles float across the gathering crowd around Stage 1 and 2 and the air is thick with the aroma of market food and cigarette smoke. Early punters are able to catch Triple J’s Unearthed competition winners Death by Denim and ex-Unearthed artist Sly Withers, but it’s not until Adelaide rockers Bad//Dreems take the stage when things really start to heat up. A small circle pit breaks out during popular single “Dumb Ideas”, proving that Aussie fans aren’t really phased about breaking a sweat at the hottest time of day if you’re willing to play some good ole fashioned pub rock and roll.

Shortly after comes Young Australian of the Year Danzal Baker and his troupe of dancers and percussionist for Baker Boy. Full of smiles and gratitude, Baker’s set is high energy and well-choreographed, with loud whistles and cheering every time somebody drops to break-dance on stage. Tracks such as “Cool As Hell”, “Cloud 9” and “Marryuna” (a Yolŋu Matha word meaning to dance for fun) have heads bopping left right and centre. Following Baker Boy, Vera Blue takes the stage, her long ginger hair flowing in the wind as she sweeps backwards and forwards in a gorgeous orange mesh two piece. Her angelic voice ripples across Fremantle Oval, overpowering any other noise around her. She pauses during “All the Pretty Girls”, allowing the audience to echo the chorus back to her clear as day, and again during “Lady Powers”, which she dedicates to all the women in attendance today.

Meanwhile on Stages 3 and 4, Adrian Eagle opens his set with a rendition of Ocean Alley’s “Confidence” that is incredibly, even more relaxing and chill than the original. Jessica Cerro also known as Montaigne follows, a tiny but mighty powerhouse who can easily throw her voice out to the wind. She experiences a bit of audio feedback but doesn’t let it throw her off her game, belting out song after song to a smaller crowd than she deserves. Cerro wraps up her underrated set with a staggering performance of her new single “READY”.
Back to the main stage and John Farnham has drawn the older crowd out to dance. Even before setting a foot on stage, a backdrop of the Whispering Jack cover art already has people buzzing with excitement. Farnham begins with a hype anthem “We Will Rock You” by Queen and ends with AC/DC, appeasing his audience with all the favourites including “That’s Freedom”, “Age of Reason” and “The Voice”, complete with bagpipes and deafening “woah-ohs”. Farnham even indulged a little with a rare rendition of “Sadie the Cleaning Lady”, asking fans to “sing along or I’ll come around to your house.” He has recently received a bit of negative feedback for swearing like a sailor at previous shows, but the crowd seem to lap it up here in Freo, even when he tells everyone they can “piss off, you bastards!”

All the way from Iceland, indie folk band Of Monsters and Men take things down a notch for their sunset time slot. In spite of Nanna Hilmarsdóttir and Raggi Þórhallsson’s perfectly harmonised vocals, much of the crowd seems to make their way to the side stages where rock duo Holy Holy were captivating festival goers. Montaigne joins them for a surprise Like a Version performance of Lorde’s “Green Light” before homegrown Crooked Colours bounce out in matching white jumpsuits, ready to party. A timely set with bright, multicoloured visuals as their backdrop was the perfect burst of energy that was needed just in time for the best performance of the night from brothers Nick and Sam Littlemore of PNAU.
Bursting onto the stage with “Are you ready Perth?” so loud it makes people jump, live performance vocalists Marques Toliver and Kira Divine ooze confidence as they take the main stage by the reins with “Solid Gold”, draped in reflective gold jackets and fluorescent pink tassels. While Toliver and Divine take centre stage, the Littlemores refrain from speaking and hang towards the back, showcasing a unique stage presence that is unlike most artists. Kicking off with the strongest start of all the performances today, the vibe remained consistent throughout the entire set, with punters with tired feet at the back of the venue standing up for hits such as “Go Bang”, “Changa” and “Chameleon”.

A hard act to follow, Peking Duk don’t quite reach the mark in the same way that their predecessors did. Taking to the stage first with “Stranger”, Canberra producers Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles are highly acclaimed with a huge audience and welcomed with open arms. While the excess use of smoke cannons, laser beams and streamers gets the crowd going, a much more grounded performance is happening on the other side of the venue with electropop Aussies based in Europe, Parcels. This gives weary fans the choice to opt out for a groovier, less intense vibe. Closing the side stages for the day to a small but appreciative audience is Sydney trio Wave Racer, bubbling in their own unique style of electro-synth house music.

Vampire Weekend at Falls Festival Fremantle. Photo by Karen Lowe.
Last but not least, New York Indie rockers Vampire Weekend take the main stage and serenade Fremantle with a mix of new and old tracks spanning more than a decade. Opening with “Sympathy” from their 2019 album Father of the Bride, lead vocalist Ezra Koenig, dressed in light blue denim cotton threads and a matching jacket seems cheerful and relaxed despite the mass exodus from the crowd following Peking Duk. Crowd favourites like “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”, “Horchata”, “Diane Young”, “Cousins”, “A-Punk” and “Oxford Comma” have fans clapping and slow dancing on the side lines. An unexpected cover of SBTRKT’s “New Dorp. New York” is a treat for all.
Ultimately the band’s set favours new music over their older, more recognisable hits. Noticeably missing were from 2010’s album Contra is “White Sky”, “Holiday” and “Giving Up the Gun”, however new popular tracks such as “This Life”, “Harmony Hall” and ending the night with a catchy rendition of “Sunflower” feels like the first breath of fresh air since the band’s last visit down under. As a part of the finale, two giant inflatable globes are tossed into the crowd, bouncing across the top of the crowd as Day 1 at Falls Festival Fremantle comes to an end just before midnight. A wonderful day for all, and a huge hype for those returning tomorrow. 5/5 Stars.

TV’s worst moments of the year (there were many)
CLOSE
Tumblr media
These are the worst TV moments and disappointing endings in 2019. USA TODAY
In 2019, there was more TV than ever before, from scripted dramas and reality series to sports, news and sketch comedy. And in that vast crop, there was some really fantastic TV.
But for every superb “Dead to Me” or great Oscar acceptance speech or triumphant underdog team clinching the World Series in Game 7, there were embarrassing new series, excruciatingly dull awards shows and finales practically begging for angry Twitter reactions.
As the year draws to a close, we rounded up the worst offenders on TV this year, in the hope that, as TV becomes even bigger in 2020, it just might get a little better.

The terrible ‘Game of Thrones’ finale
The few months away from Westeros hasn’t lessened the sting of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series finale, “The Iron Throne.” Overall, the final season was a letdown, with a rushed plot and no emotional resonance. The finale itself was poorly directed and dull, even before the controversial decision to have Jon Snow (Kit Harington) kill Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and anoint Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) as king. Over eight seasons there were plenty of fantastic moments, but the writers’ inability to stick the landing tarnished the series’ legacy and made its inevitable Emmy wins seem like a fluke at best and pandering at worse.

The reality TV tinge of ‘The Great British Baking Show’
What happened to the sweet, homey show about grandmas who bake simple cakes? The 10th season of the British treasure threw out the most beloved tropes of the series in favor of something flashier, and far worse. Producers chose a young and attractive cast of bakers that was considerably less talented than in previous years; episodes showed more footage of interpersonal drama and tears onscreen; the judges asked contestants to prepare ludicrous dishes and then eliminated contestants almost randomly to drum up drama. These choices made “Baking” (which streams on Netflix in the U.S.) seem more akin to shallow, aggressive American reality TV. We are far more disappointed in what we watched than judge Paul Hollywood could ever be in a bake.

The overly weird ‘Dickinson’ (and the disappointment of Apple TV Plus)
Tech giant Apple jumped into the original programming sphere last month with Apple TV Plus, a streaming service that debuted with just nine original series. One of them was “Dickinson,” a half-hour comedy starring Hailee Steinfeld about Emily Dickinson’s teen years tinged with modern music and slang. The year’s biggest love-it-or-hate-it series, it illustrates the overall disappointment with Apple’s big TV bet, which (so far) has failed to produce any truly great shows, even if “For All Mankind” and “Servant” are halfway decent.

New shows with all the wrong ideas: ‘Dollface’ and ‘Almost Family’
Every year networks and streaming services debut new series, hoping to find the next “This Is Us,” but this year there were some true flops, Hulu’s “Dollface” and Fox’s “Almost Family.” The former turned twenty-something women into a gross stereotype that wasn’t funny (not ideal for a comedy) and the latter tried to turn an egregious crime into a heartwarming family story.

‘Big Little Lies’ wasting a second season (and so many Oscar winners)
If the second, and disappointing, season of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” has any moral, it’s that Hollywood needs to learn to let stories end. When it debuted in 2017, it was intended as a seven-episode series. Creator David E. Kelley and producer/stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon should have stopped there. The decision to bring back the series without a compelling story was a huge mistake, and the wonderful cast (including Meryl Streep) couldn’t save it.

‘Arrested Development’ ends with a whimper
Remember when fans used to clamor for more “Arrested Development”? You won’t see hashtags to save it anytime soon. The so-so final eight episodes of the cult sitcom, which began on Fox in 2003, arrived on Netflix last March with little fanfare and a reminder of the sexual misconduct allegations against star Jeffrey Tambor. It was a sad end to a once-brilliant sitcom that raises the question: should it have been rescued from cancellation at all?

Awards shows without a host
Take note, 2020 awards shows: You need a host. The 2019 Oscars, plagued by pre-show controversy, barely scraped through without a host, but when the Emmys tried the tactic in September, the broadcast was a slog. As, more often than not, ratings fall for these gilded, self-congratulatory Hollywood affairs across the board, taking away a major element designed to entertain the audience at home is a grave error.

Not-so-live musicals
Live musicals are sometimes ratings bonanzas not because of the nostalgia for the title, but rather the live aspect of the event, the sense that anything can (and probably will) go wrong. But the two we got this year were anything but, from Fox’s version of “Rent,” which aired a prerecorded dress rehearsal after a cast member’s injury, and ABC’s “The Little Mermaid,” mostly the 1989 animated movie with live songs sprinkled in.

The mind-boggling ‘Dancing With the Stars’ eliminations
The long-running reality competition series disappointed in its 28th season as a slightly tweaked voting formula led to some of the most emotional eliminations for all the wrong reasons. The judges had to pick who would stay and go among the two couples who received the fewest audience votes, and often they had to choose between two of the best-dancing couples of the night. The judges were irritated, the couples were heartbroken and bad dancers (including former White House press secretary Sean Spicer) stayed in the competition far too long. The problem was summed up, sadly, by James Van Der Beek’s elimination. Despite his solid performance in the Nov. 18 episode, he wound up in the bottom two, and the judges chose to send the former “Dawson’s Creek” star home right after he revealed his wife’s miscarriage and danced while sobbing. The decision seemed so antithetical to everything the usually uplifting series is about. Even his competitor, Ally Brooke, thought it was wrong: She asked if he could take her spot and stay in the competition.

‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’ mishandled racism and sexual harassment
Twice this year, CBS reality show participants stepped over the line: On “Big Brother,” houseguest Jack Matthews was accused of racism by fellow contestant Kemi Fakunle, and on “Survivor,” contestant Dan Spilo touched multiple women against their express wishes. In both cases, the networks prioritized keeping the drama onscreen over punishing bad behavior and protecting victims. Matthews and Spilo should have been sent home, but they were left on their series, risking potential repeats of their offenses (and Spilo did). TV networks and producers need to learn how to promote safe and inclusive environments, or rethink the entire genre.

Netflix’s cancellation spree
Every network and streaming service has to cancel multiple series every year; it’s just a fact of the industry. But in 2019 Netflix wielded its ax at a far higher rate than the streamer had before, canceling such a wide swath of its series that, from an outside view, it seemed to speak more to the company’s overall strategy rather than viewership for any one series, which it (mostly) won’t reveal. As more shows (good and bad) are announced as a “third and final” or “fourth and final” season (including greats like “Dear White People” and “GLOW”), it becomes clear that Netflix isn’t out to get 200 episodes of a sitcom or even 100 episodes of a twisty drama, the outmoded formula for syndication. While certainly not every show needs to last 10 seasons, some have the potential to evolve and grow for years. Especially on a platform that pioneered the idea of binge-watching a series over a week or two, it’s sad that Netflix originals might never keep us occupied for very long. As streaming becomes more dominant in the industry, it’s a safe bet to say we’ll be far less likely get a series that runs as long as “Friends” or “Grey’s Anatomy” again.
