Introduction to dinosaurs and bones!

Vocabulary:

Paleontology: the study of all prehistoric life.

Fossil: any preserved evidence left behind by a prehistoric organism.

Adaptations: traits that have been evolved because they serve specific purposes.

Content:

Dinosaurs came in all sorts of shapes and sizes! They weren’t all huge, some of them were probably less than a meter long when fully grown (like the Microraptor, or the Fruitadens)!! And, contrary to popular media (The Jurassic Park series), the Velociraptor was actually about the size of a dog, or a turkey; give or take.

A good example of an adaptation would be bones! Bones help all animals survive by serving four major functions:

They passively resist the force of gravity and maintain an animal's form!

Bones provide a rigid framework for muscle attachment!

As much as they provide protection internally, they could easily be fantastic weapons (think horns, and other things like that).

They act as HUGE mineral reserves!

The Skulls and Jaws!

Vocabulary:

Vertebrates: animals with two kinds of special skeletal adaptations: the skull and vertebrae.

Vertebrae: structures primarily made out of bone and/or cartilage that surround a portion of the spinal nerve cord.

Vertebral column: a series of interlocking vertebrae.

Brain case: a hollow chamber formed by multiple skull bones that houses the brain!

Fenestrae: Latin for “windows.”

Content:

Skulls are not singular bones! The skull is made up of many bones that are tightly locked together. The skull itself can give greater insights about a dinosaur's life than really any other bone(s)!

The upper and lower jaws may contain teeth and/or include a beak, and these things are critical for paleontologists to be able to interpret what the mighty beast(s) were adapted to eat!

The rear portion of the skull includes the brain case. There are many small openings in the brain case that allow nerves to connect to the brain. Which is very important, and is still a present adaptation today. The size and shape of the brain case can indicate the size and/or shape of the brain it housed, and, therefore, provides us with clues to the dinosaur's mental capabilities!

Dinosaur skulls also have multiple pairs of large openings! These included the:

Nares: the openings for the nostrils.

Orbits: the openings for the eyes.

In some modern animals, like turtles, there are no other skull openings. This is another example of animals evolving and adapting to their environments! Dinosaurs had a few more openings in their skulls, which were called:

Fenestrae!

Behind each orbit there were two fenestrae:

On the lateral sides of the skull, there were the two laterotemporal fenestrae.

On the top of the skull, there were the two supratemporal fenestrae.

Both pairs were present in the skull to make room for large jaw muscles!

Between each orbit and naris, dinosaurs also had a third pair of fenestrae! These were called the antorbital fenestrae. Though, the exact function of this is unclear; I like to think that in some dinosaurs it helped warm the air that they breathed, and in others it simply made the skull a little bit lighter.

A strange mountainous creature. Though he seeks the thrill of the hunt, he does not close in for the kill. Us mere bugs seem to be easy prey. To be truly hunted by a creature so vast is a bewitching thought.

Hi! I’m Alex!

And I love dinosaurs! I’ve always loved dinosaurs, though I never really got the chance to talk about them because I always got way too excited and info-dumped on the other person… but!! Now I have a tumblr; and I’ll be posting my notes and things to this little void!

Also! Here are some fun facts about my page:

I am 20 years old! Though, I will not be posting any NSFW content, I do want the younger users to know that I’m a little bit old!

@muffinlance I see your Zuko gets adopted by old sweepy and propose to you Zuko gets adopted by a random scholar at the Ba Sing Se University.

Look in Yuka's defense she has a lot of siblings, and Zuko at a quick glance could pass as her youngest brother. Yes, he should be at home still nowhere near Ba Sing Se, but her siblings end up in the strangest of places so she wouldn't put it past him to show up randomly. Doesn't help she already wears thick lens glasses, and her eyesight is just getting worse from all the reading in the dark she does. Also, she was deep in her research for the paper, and the kid she mistook as her brother was really useful at finding her just what she needed for her paper. He was also apparently an expert on Avatar research, able to spout off all kinds of facts and quotes where he got that research from. By the time she realizes this kid isn't her little brother, she's decided to adopt him anyway, and she will absolutely fight the Di Lee for him. He is her new research partner, and she'll list him as one of her sources if she has to. Then they can't take him as he is an integral part of the development of the culture of Ba Sing Se. Besides, the kid sucks at hiding the fact that he is a fire bender and needs someone to take him under their wing. Half her family are firebenders anyway. She may be small and mousy, but she can be mighty when it comes to her research. She is totally willing to throw hands with the Di Lee if it comes down to it.

Zuko isn't sure what to make of the small mousy scholar he accidentally stumbled upon while trying to find more research on the Avatar. Nor is he sure how he became her research assistant. All he knows is she started calling him Koji and talking to him like she knew him or rather knew this Koji and handing him scrolls to put away and requesting more works on the Avatar some he hadn't read before as Ba Sing Se was the one place he hadn't been able to break into until now. Then he starts spouting off his Avatar knowledge between what he knows of the current Avatar and what he read in old books and scrolls she just jots down what he said without ever once looking up at him. By the time she realizes he isn't this Koji person, she has apparently decided she is keeping him. She escorts him home or to the tea shop when she is done picking his brain for the day or treats him to good food and makes sure he gets enough to not only fill his belly but also to bring home to Uncle. When he gets fired from the tea shop for fighting Jet, she hires him permanently. She even argues that Jet is clearly delusional and needs help not to be carted off by the Culural Police. He is clearly scared so badly he can't see he is safe and that there is no war in Ba Sing Se. So Jet gets an involuntary stay in one of Ba Sing Se's finest mental hospitals with his own personal Joo Dee to look after him. It's around this time that Uncle realizes he may have to fight this young lady for custody of his nephew. At least he is staying out of trouble and expanding his intellectual knowledge.

Another year has passed, and with it the opportunity to reflect back on all that has happened. While my growth was not as dramatic as last year, I can still see lots of positive change.

I'll never have enough ways to say thank you for all the love and support you have given me this year. On to 2025!

random thoughts about how toya’s excitement feels so lively and pure. i love how much i can feel his happiness from just the way he talks and his facial expressions

let’s take his new year’s side story as a little example, where he successfully did a kendama trick for the first time

i love how my first thought was “HE'S SO HAPPY” when i read this story. the subtle excited tremors in his voice and throat with each syllable... the rising pitch when he finally acknowledges it... the emotions portrayed of that first time disbelief when he said でき��… (no exclaimation) all the way to when he really saw that he did it with his own eyes できたぞ！the addition of ぞ adds weight into his excitement.

anyways i don't know if you can hear it but the excited tremors in his voice... (that usually only happens when we are EXTREMELY excited and full of adrenaline) it adds so much realism... its not something that can be done on command easily... it breathes so much life into toya's purehearted innocence at even the smallest things.

a good way to describe it: sort of like in english, when we get really excited and go "oh↓ my→ god↑↑", the subtle vocal tremors in the vowel sounds as your pitch rises, the emphasis on the ending consonant sounds. it is exactly that but in japanese. for toya its especially obvious in the "te ga furuteiru" line. you can really hear the vocal tremors and a bit of slurring for the both hard and soft syllables.
