I was wondering what you would consider the best place to write is when you're drafting games? I've been using Scrivener myself to keep it all in one place but I'm not sure if that's the optimal way of working especially when there's multiple branches becoming involved. This will be my first cyoa game after primarily writing novels for years. Is there any advice you can give?
I recommend at minimum using a text-editing program that labels line numbers and makes it clear what your tabs are doing. It's extra helpful to use ones with ChoiceScript highlighters. A couple of examples are:
Notepad++ with ChoiceScript highlighters
Sublime Text with ChoiceScript highlighters
I used to use Sublime Text, but I now use Visual Studio Code with Stephen Granade's ChoiceScript plugin. This acts as a highlighter but can also highlight coding errors as well as automatically test the game within the VS Code window. The coding-error highlights have saved me SO much time:
VS Code ChoiceScript extension
You can also use CSIDE which is a very popular tool that can be used in your browser if you have DropBox, or downloaded and used on your machine. It isn't fully up-to-date with the ChoiceScript code currently, but a ton of people use it and find it useful.
Thank you for the ask! There are lots of people on the Choice of Games forum who can help out with any issues you have so do jump in, enjoy your writing, and good luck!

The thing about “I missed you” sex is that the sex isn’t the best part. Like yeah you’re fucking like crazy on the next available flat surface when you finally have time but the hazy window of uncertainty before that moment is sublime. A month of constant overtime from Zayne and weeklong work trips from you culminates with a friend’s dinner party. You’re keeping distance just because you’re running different conversations with different people, tethered to everyone around you but yourselves. And later your phone buzzes with a text that just says:
After your shower tonight, don’t put anything on.
You look at Zayne across the room, who’s nodding along to someone else’s story. Your chest hurts. You need to go.

⌁ Stung by Jealousy ⌁
(Miguel O’Hara x reader)
🕸️ Entangled series 🕸️ ch. 6 (flashback) prev part
Summary: You and Miguel hang out at the mall, where you both get flirted with. These encounters evoke jealousy, and challenge your feelings for each other as well as both of your patience.
⋆。‧₊°༺𓆩❦︎𓆪༻༉‧₊˚.
“You gotta pick: ‘Pretzel Palace’ or ‘Cookie Crumbs,’” he asked, pointing at both neon signs in front of us. Miguel had called me to hang out today last minute after ditching yesterday’s study session for a “family emergency.” I knew he felt guilty, so I agreed, but deep down I was still butthurt and suspicious of where he really was or who he was seeing.
* * * *
“Do you go to NYU?” the cashier asked, handing me my cookie.
“Nueva York, yeah. How’d you know?” I asked, slowly grabbing the cookie from his lingering hand.
“You look like it… Smart,” he said, smiling at me.
My cheeks flushed.
“I also go to Nueva York. Thanks for asking. And I’m guessing you… don’t,” Miguel cut in, shrugging, crossing his arms.
“Miguel,” I muttered, elbowing him. He ignored me; his solid stance didn’t budge.
“Y/N and I have physics together,” he added, leaning into me, blocking the cashier’s gaze.
His jaw clenched; I looked down at his hand pointing at the glass window. His other hand was in a tight fist resting beside his hips, his knuckles white.
The glass between them should’ve burst from the tension by now.
“And I’ll have two M&Ms—” he looked down at his badge, “Joseph,” he sarcastically smiled.
Joseph turned back to me, handing Miguel his cookies without making eye contact, keeping his gaze on me. My cheeks were uncontrollably pink and burning. He was cute, but not Miguel.
“So you’re just study buddies. Cool.”
Shit. He’s bold. I would be hiding behind that counter, shitting bricks if Miguel looked at me that way.
Miguel tilted his head at the cashier then turned to me. He was astounded, somehow more astounded than I was.
He looked down at me, waiting for a response from me, some sarcastic comeback, some rejection, but I was too embarrassingly flustered to talk.
“Yeah, so can we pay now? I didn’t know Cookie Craps was encouraging their staff to practice their social skills with their guests now! It’s much needed! Good for you!” Miguel exclaimed, sarcastically, pulling out his wallet. I turned sharply up at him, scolding him with my eyes, which he ignored.
“Cookie Crumbs. And yes, good for me,” Joseph responded, matching his sarcasm, smiling at me.
Miguel’s face dropped, his lips pulling down into an irritated frown. He offered his card over the counter.
“Anddd on the house,” the cashier nodded, his hand refusing Miguel’s card. His coworker looked over at him, rolling his eyes.
Miguel scoffed, also rolling his eyes. “No, you’re too generous,”
“You know what? You, however, can pay me with one coffee date?”
He’s fucking relentless. This is painful.
“I— I,” I stuttered, knowing the person who I wanted most in the world was witnessing this disaster. I would be flattered, and even excited, if I didn’t utterly and completely desire the man beside me.
But, this could also prove something to him. Other people want me.
It’s harmless anyways.
Though I hope it stings just a little.
I forced a less anxious smile and nodded agreeably, “Sounds good.”
“Here’s my number,” he said, writing on receipt paper.
He handed it to me.
I grabbed it slowly, looking up at him then at Miguel, then back at the scribbled numbers in my hand.
Miguel stood still, tense, pink in his cheeks, jaw clenched, and a small paper bag strangled by his fist. His eyebrows furrowed, staring daggers at Joseph.
“Thanks, Joseph,” I said, smiling, pushing my hair behind my ear.
I could feel the fire within Miguel burn next to me. It made me warm.
“Coffee it is,” he grinned, “Just shoot me a text, Y/N.”
* * * *
“Well, that was… something,” Miguel said, nudging me as we walked out with our cookies. “I mean, I guess I made a new friend?” I responded quietly, trying to subliminally communicate to Miguel that it meant nothing to me, that I was loyal to him, that I was waiting for him.
I did, however, find some enjoyment in Miguel’s jealousy.
“And you accepted his number? Wow, Y/N, how friendly,”
“What was I supposed to do? Be friendly and give him my fucking email? At least, I didn’t give him my number. Chill out and leave me alone,” I mumbled, rushing to out-walk and dodge his questions, or maybe avoid him seeing my satisfied smirk. This asshole is jealous.
“You fucking idiot. I told you you were oblivious!” he exclaimed, as we strolled.
He picked up his pace to catch up to me, “He was not flirting, he was being… friendly,” I reasoned.
“Do friends want to take you out for coffee, like he was so desperate to do?”
“We go out for coffee,” I argued.
There was a pause. “Yeah… well that’s different,”
“How so?”
“Just is,”
“How?”
“Shut up and eat your cookie,” he demanded, as we entered the bookstore.
Fucking coward.
I walked towards the back of the bookstore, where my favorite genre hid. Miguel followed behind me.
My eyes scanned the aisle, searching, focused on the plethora of small print.
“So… are you going to text him?”
This could be fun.
“Geez Miguel, you’re thinking about this more than I am… but who knows? I don’t,” I shrugged, smugly.
“How do you not know?” he mumbled, following behind me.
“He wasn’t too cute, and I just, I wasn’t too interested,” I muttered, sliding my fingers across the book bindings on the top shelf.
He just wasn’t you.
“Yeah, he was a fucking loser…” he mumbled behind me, “pushy asshole, pinche—”
“They have it!” I screeched, pulling it out and flipping through the pages. Miguel grabbed the huge cookie out of my hand, letting me have my moment.
He stood behind me, towering over me, peeking down at my book.
“I’ll buy it for you,” he said, grabbing it out of my hands. “It’ll be an early birthday present,” he said, flipping through the pages. I turned, grabbing it back from him.
“My birthday is in six months,” I grabbed my cookie back.
“Perfect, it’s your half birthday, even better,” he reasoned.
“I wanna read at least one chapter here. I’ve been looking for this goddamn book for months,” I said, walking to the sitting area.
“Okay, I’m going to go find something to read. Stay here. Don’t move.” he instructed, walking away from me.
* * * *
I sat reading, when I saw Miguel over my book, coming towards me with a huge quantum theory book. Of course.
He held it up proudly, grinning at me. “I’ve read it before, but it’s the only semi recent work they have,” he muttered, looking down and flipping through it.
“Nice,” I muttered, looking down at my book, continuing my chapter.
He sunk into the chair across from me, looking down at his book. His eyes peered over his book, straight at me. I was too scared to look up.
* * * *
“How’s your book?” I asked, avoiding eye contact.
“Same as when I read it last month: groundbreaking.”
I scoffed.
Suddenly, a girl approached us, more so approached him. She stood over him, whispering, inaudible to me.
He smiled, charmingly, looking up at her, then stood up, now obnoxiously towering over the already tall, beautiful girl. He combed his fingers through his hair, fixing himself up.
His charm made me roll my eyes.
Cocky asshole. So sure of himself, so confident and arrogant and annoying; I could keep going.
He nodded, continuing their quiet conversation, then crossed his arms. His forearms could make me fall to my knees. Her eyes looked down at them, violating him. They must make her weak too. It’s not her fault. He has that effect. Asshole.
She laughed, it was a pretty laugh too.
She’s beautiful. Hell, if I weren’t crushing on Miguel right now, I would be asking her for her number.
“Y/N,”
I snapped out of it, bringing my gaze back to him.
“Yes?”
“Can I use your phone?”
I tilted my head at him. “Where’s yours?”
“Left it in the car,” he said, shrugging.
I handed him my phone, which he handed to her.
She smiled, typing into my phone. She handed it back to me, keeping her gaze on Miguel, smirking back at him, like they had some inside joke, some fucking history I didn’t know about.
My cheeks burned as I watched from the outside; stung by jealousy’s merciless venom.
She started to whisper, seemingly her farewell. He leaned down, letting her whisper directly into his ear. My blood boiled, but I don’t blame either of them. They’re both young, attractive… fucking cunts.
They smiled at each other then she went on her way.
I watched her walk away, as Miguel immediately sunk back into his chair, looking back at his book, returning to his studies casually, as if some girl wasn’t all over him.
Smug son of a bitch.
I cleared my throat, signaling him to look up from his book.
“So what… was that?”
He took a bite of his cookie, “She asked for my number; thought I was cute,”
I rolled my eyes. “Cute,” I muttered, looking back at my book. “And I’m guessing you gave it to her?” I asked, refusing to look up at him and reveal my jealous weakness.
“Nope. I just had her put her number into your phone. I wasn’t too interested,” he muttered, looking at me.
“‘Too,’ hmph, and why don’t you have your phone?”
“Because I’m here with you. You drain enough of my energy and enough of my time,”
“But, you’re single, go give her your number, you fucking wimp,”
“‘Wimp’? I couldn’t— you’re fucking annoying,” he shook his head and looked back down at his book.
“You didn’t take it because I’m fucking annoying?”
“No. I— I mean, why are you so persistent that I give her my number? Do you want me to give her your number? Want me to go give it to her for you?… What’s it to you anyways?” he closed his book shut and placed it on his lap.
Oh. He’s mad. I pushed his buttons. Good.
“What’s it to me? I just don’t want to watch you waste away a loner. I care about you,” I responded, sarcastically.
“Oh you care about me, yeah? How sweet! Didn’t seem like you cared about me a whole bunch back there accepting fucking cookie man’s number, flirting in front of me,”
“And why would that bother you, O’Hara? Hm? You’re not my boyfriend, Miguel,” I asserted confidently, though it still stung to say because I wanted him to be, and I wanted him to want to be mine.
I hope it stung.
His eyebrows flinched, then softened. He saw right through me.
“Bothered me? It was fucking painful for me. I mean I felt bad for you. Don’t worry though. Someday, things will make sense. You’ll find the one… probably when you’re like 63 and less stubborn and fucking irritating, but nonetheless, you’ll find the one,” he reassured me, so kindly.
“Fuck. You,” I said, kicking his foot, hard.
He kept his foot planted, solid on the ground, scowling up at me.
“You. Wish.”

They didn’t speak much.
Not at first.
Words felt too clumsy in the hush of that grey morning, when everything was steeped in the echo of last night’s storm—touches still clinging to skin like the ghost of rain, and the air in her house holding its breath, as if even the walls knew what had shifted.
Thomas moved around her kitchen like he belonged, barefoot on the old wooden floors, his sleeves rolled, black shirt creased. He handed her tea like it was a peace offering, or a vow. And Evelyn, ever composed, didn’t look away as she took it. Their fingers brushed—purposefully, not by accident.
He watched her then, leaned against the counter, mug in hand, eyes tracing the slope of her shoulder beneath the robe, the way her hair fell like ink across her collarbone. She said nothing at first, only sipped her tea, gaze distant. But it wasn’t avoidance.
It was calculation.
Evelyn Cardwell was not a woman undone by one night, even one as ruinous and sublime as that. She was considering, cataloguing. Feeling every breath of it like the ink of a poem she hadn’t finished writing.
At last, she said, quietly, “So now what, Thomas?”
He looked at her. No smirk now. No mask.
“Now I stay,” he said.
“Until?”
His eyes flicked to hers. “Until you ask me to leave.”
She tilted her head, something dangerous glittering in her gaze. “And if I never do?”
He stepped forward, slow and deliberate, his hand coming to rest on the back of her chair. Leaning down until his lips were just behind her ear, his voice a velvet rasp:
“Then I suppose I’ll be yours. Completely. And I’ll make it your undoing.”
She didn’t flinch.
Instead, she let her hand slide over his, her fingers curling around his wrist with a quiet claim. “I already am,” she murmured. “And you already are.”
They didn’t need more than that.
Not yet.
They spent the day within that house like a pair of ghosts haunting one another, brushing hands in corridors, pausing in doorways to share glances that lingered too long. He read from her favourite volume of Shelley while she curled beside him in the window alcove. At some point, Oliver texted to ask if she was alive. She ignored it.
At twilight, she watched him from across the room, her green eyes narrowed, her finger idly tracing the rim of her wine glass.
“Careful, Strange,” she said. “You’re beginning to feel like poetry.”
His smile was soft, almost sorrowful. “And you’ve always been the ink.”

I know it's a lot of questions. You don't have to answer all of them of course I won't be mad. You don't have to answer any of them, but if you want:

75. Generally, I do not get annoyed easily.
80. Relationship. I don't really do one night stands because I need a connection with the person before we get to fooling around.
81. Red or Brown. I don't remember which one I wore last 😅

The smell of sulfur. A scent that always made their noses sting.
From the heat emanating from the room, they guessed that they were in the Hell. When the orange and reddish particles disappeared, their eyes could contemplate the boudoir of the House of Hope. It wasn't the first time they set foot here. During their adventure with Tav, they had already penetrated to the lair of the demon and its incubus. “Aaah… My little mouse’s cheese, here you are finally.” When they heard the voice, they took a deep breath. Raphael basked in his healing spring, a chalice in his hand. He dipped his lips in this red beverage, which must surely be wine. He examined them from top to bottom, like this, he judged their potential. They were as expressionless as ever, waiting to see what the cambion wanted. “Still as silent as I see.” Noticing that he wasn't going to be able to get a single word out of their mouth, he placed his cup on the edge of his bath, before standing up. “I’ve been watching you for a while now, little cheese.” Carrying his steps out of the source, it was with a snap of his fingers that his wet and naked figure became dry and clothed. Perhaps it was one of the few things they envied about this demon. Even if for many, Raphael had a perfect body, a face that highlighted the self-esteem he had in him. For their part, it was his Ascendant form that they loved. This sublime being, which reflected the power of hell. If they had had the opportunity to touch even a little of its crests with their fragile hands, they would have been won over. However, they shook their faces to stop thinking about it.
“I have something to offer you.” Without even looking at them, Raphael motioned to follow him. Their walks took them to the Archives. Without waiting, he summoned a scroll. At this sudden appearance, they wrinkled their noses. What did this demon want to do again? They never thought they'd see that piece of paper a second time, considering what Tav had done. Raphael couldn't help but laugh mockingly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Well ! That's a perfect reaction! Small, but it means everything.” They retorted ; “What do you want, demon?!” His smile was much more diabolical. “Just a contract. Your soul is nothing for me, but I told myself that... You were surely tired of being my little mouse's cheese, weren't you? And, of all the children of Lord Astarion.” They gulped down their saliva. They ran their thin fingers over the bite scars. A way out? This is what Raphael offered them. They pursed their lips, while deep in thought. Considering the pros and cons.
There, in Lord Astarion's palace, they had food, shelter and clean clothes. But they weren't free. No, far from it. They were like a bird in a cage. The only view they had was through their window. Miserable as they were, their only purpose was to feed the vampires.
Their brown irises crossed those of Raphael. "All right." It was so simple and quick that Raphael raised an eyebrow. He wouldn't have thought they would have the courage to accept the contract. With a movement of his hand, he moved the parchment and the quill that came with it. “You know how to do it, right?” He couldn't wait to see how it played out. Illiterate, they couldn't read the conditions, but it didn't matter, they signed anyway. It’s in a childish and trembling way, as if it was their first time writing.
The contract was concluded. “Your soul is mine now. Astarion is no longer your master.” They felt something disappear inside them. They felt cold, before everything returned to the way it was before.
“Before you leave.” Raphael gave them a tarot card and a simple dagger. “Let’s say it’s a gift from me and one from Loviatar. With this dagger, you could then make blood sacrifices. She will offer you her blessing. A good thing when you have to bleed yourself, no? Still with his big smile, he continued; “And this card, well, you’re going to have to figure out how to use it.”
Then, without warning, with a snap of their fingers, they found themselves in that cold room that they knew so well. They didn't feel any change in them. Anxious and lost, before one of the bloodsuckers arrived, they hid the tarot card and the dagger under their mattresses. Should they wait? But wait, what? What if Astarion found out?
So many questions without answers.

Spider-Man Read-Through 058: Somebody is Killing Them All! (SSM 44-45, SSM Ann 2)
MASTERPOST
Tumblr media
With a cover like that, you can only do one thing: keep reading.
(Plus, there's gorgeous art in there!)
And here's our awesome first page as well:
Tumblr media
Wow. Just... wow. The lighting, the shading, the view... Incredible. Maybe needs more cars but come on, that's a detail. *reads the text* Oh...
The pages are very dense. Basically, the mob has had... issues recently (I wonder if Silvermane's part of it, like last time) and a guy wants his men to find some items for his uncle.
It's the New Year for Chinatown! One of the men, Dolenz, tries to steal the jade there, but he gets gunned down.
MEANWHILE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm pregnant! But also, great colors in the second panel. And the third one. And I'm pregnant!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at his cute little outfit!!!!!!!! I love that red sweater, holy fuck!
Tumblr media
Holy fuck. The food is good. The food is delicious.
So one of Peter's pictures features the aforementioned murder. Time to investigate!
Tumblr media
It's Alfred's turn to die mysteriously. Not yet though, Spidey's still investigating!
Tumblr media
First off, that joke is funny. Secondly, that cake in the last panel???!?! Yes but?!?! Maybe a bit too much hahaha.
Turns out Alfred doesn't die, on the contrary, his attackers die! What a chad.
The art is all over the place in this issue, but the line art is so good I don't even mind. Love how it all looks. And I feel like there's a lot of ambition too!
Tumblr media
See what I mean?
Anyway, Spidey finds out that Malachai Toomes owns the building he was led to... Toomes, as in, the Vulture. He's a relative, nice!
Tumblr media
What the fuck did the artists smoke for this issue, because they made excellent art, I love this!
Spidey fights goons, finds Toomes, who informs him that Alfred is the culprit, then tries to kill him with deadly gas coming out of his carnation. It's not the green, but it's still very gay.
Spidey wakes up chained in a coffin on a conveyor belt. And next to him...
Tumblr media
Fucking hell, how the fuck is this issue so gorgeous like that?! Bravo to the whole team because goddamnit.
On *that* website, the commenters really don't like the art, but it's a scan and not digital, which I think does sublimate how it looked. Damn, I loved it.
Tumblr media
What the fuuuuuck.
So Malachai is the Vulture's nephew, nice.
Everyone thinks Spidey's dead, so they have a celebration. Good for them!
The Vulture isn't fooled by Alfred's plans though. It was actually his intention all along to let Alfred get rid of his rivals to weed out the weak. Smart!
The furnace explodes or whatever, and Spidey gets everyone out of the burning mansion (but not before showcasing his perfect butt).
Elsewhere...
Tumblr media
Damn, I liked that creepy little bald guy, I'll miss him.
The Vulture gets angry and starts pummeling Alfred, but then Spidey arrives, they fight, the Vulture flees, Alfred asks the cops to take him in to get protected from the Vulture.
Spidey and Vulture crash in Grand Central Station, it makes for a nice environment! Loving this. Eventually, the Vulture crashes in a glass window.
Peter... doesn't feel so good.
Tumblr media
What a great set of issues. What a solid ending. Loved the art.
And now it's time for the King-Size Annual! I'm hoping for more of Peter's life, but somehow, I doubt it.
Tumblr media
Sure!
Our story starts as Spidey and Rapier fight together against some low-level goons, before Rapier takes off. Alright, I'm up for a... team up.
Tumblr media
They're staying mostly consistent with his apartment, that's nice! And while I appreciate our pretty hero, these pajamas look a bit weird. Also, it feels weird to see May!
The next day, Peter and Ned go to the docks to do some investigating.
Tumblr media
Oh Ned, that outfit... *sigh*
The goons steal Peter's press card, and our heroes leave the area. However, when Peter goes to the Bugle (I have no idea why he would go to the Bugle but not matter) and is about to become gay for pay.
Tumblr media
Oh, his "bulge ain't a billfold?" Huh-huh.
Just as I predicted previously, Silvermane's back, right in Jonah's office! He's unhappy about Jonah's inquiries about the mob, and the same goes for Peter's photographies. Silvermane himself gives the card back to Peter, nicely threatening him and taking his camera. Peter quickly gets an advance from Jonah though.
Tumblr media
Hahaha.
They have a fight, and Spidey tells off Silvermane.
Tumblr media
Silvermane's not amused.
We get a scene at the Rapier's home, where he says he must kill Silvermane and his girlfriend pleads for him to stop his vigilante activites. Standard stuff.
More importantly, Peter Parker is a slut (good for him).
Tumblr media
So Jonah's idea is to make people so angry they rile up and the authorities are forced to act. Alright, not bad!
Glory informs Peter that Jonah's behavior is due to Robbie being recently attacked and sent to the hospital. Makes sense.
At a church turned into a museum or something, Silvermane has an appointment with Rapier. This is a great excuse to show great art.
Tumblr media
Oh they're sooooo exes. They fucked, they absolutely fucked!
I'm afraid, because now that we got this character's backstory (they were partners, Silvermane left him for dead, Rapier's future girlfriend saved him, there you go) and now he can very well die. Silvermane is going to be alright, he's a villain, they always come back, but Rapier is (kind of) a nice guy now, and that's why I'm scared for him.
Spider-Man arrives right on time to stop Rapier from killing Silvermane, and Rapier's so angry he challenges Spidey to a sword fight. Hell yeah!
Tumblr media
TOO MUCH TEXT CALM DOWN STAN LEE
Spider-Man gets rid of Rapier's sword, but then--Clarissa, Rapier's girlfriend, throws it at Spidey to make him confused! Nononono she's gonna die is she? Oh, I know she's gonna die. Come oooooooon.
Rapier feels betrayed by Clarissa's intervention, and decides to start ALL OF THIS ALL OVER AGAAAAAIN because he has PRINCIPLES. JESUS. OKAY.
So what must happen... happens.
Tumblr media
Ugh. Alright, that's not a bad ending.
Except he's not dead! He flees the scene. Hm.
Tumblr media
Ok, not sure I'm a fan of this Rapier guy. Feels too much like Punisher, but a bit more quirky. Maybe if he gets some development... Who knows!
Tumblr media
We'll have to talk about this one commenter at some point because they have... opinions. They are very opiniated. And we're reading issues almost synchronized? This is funny. Dramaaaaaa. Lengthy comments every issue! Fascinating.
Next time: A lot of ASM! Like, a lot! We'll see how that goes.

Notetaking
If you had told me years ago that I would now enjoy taking notes, I would have told you to get the hell out of my face with that mess.
I've always recognized the value of taking notes, and while I would take notes at times, I can't say I much enjoyed taking notes, knew how to best take notes, or how to get the most value out of my notes.
In fact, I would argue I'm still mediocre at taking notes, but thanks to some technology and a few habits I've developed, I've gotten better at it, enjoy it more, and get more value out of it than I did for years.
The first rule of notetaking is: Assume you will forget everything. Write your notes accordingly.
The second rule of notetaking is: Don't write everything down. Write the most salient points down so you can connect the dots and make the necessary connections when re-reading your notes later.
The third rule of notetaking is: Assume you are writing your notes for a complete stranger. Make your notes clear enough that anyone can re-read them and understand them clearly. This is because when you will re-read your notes much later, you might as well be a complete stranger to who you were when you originally took the notes.
I find notetaking especially valuable to me when I'm learning something new. Notes are a way of making sure the time and effort I spend learning isn't wasted or lost because of my poor memory. More than a tool: They're a friend. They're there to help. They're you helping yourself later.
I love technology, so I'm always trying to find ways for tech. to help me with things. Hand-written notes have their value and I won't debate their merits, but I'm more efficient with a keyboard than I am with pen and paper. Plus, with notes taken electronically, you can search for a specific word or phrase through all of them, which has come in handy several times.
For every job or task, you need the right tool for the job. In the case of notetaking software, you need two kinds of notetaking tools:
A tool for quick notes: We all have notes that we need to quickly take but don't necessarily need to keep in the long term. This is what this tool is for. Formatting and presentation are not the priority here: Speed is. Good software for this are Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft Sticky Notes, Microsoft Visual Studio (VS) Code, Sublime, Atom, Notepad++, Apple Notes, and any other lightweight text editor that isn't necessarily pretty but that you can start writing in within seconds. Despite not necessarily needing the notes to be kept, I still like something with a cloud backend that synchronizes notes. Just in case. I also like being able to access my notes from the various operating systems I use. For these reasons, I prefer Microsoft Sticky Notes on Windows and Apple Notes on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS.
A tool for persistent notes: This is the main event. This is what we usually think of when we think of notetaking software. This lets you add various forms of media such as diagrams, pictures, video, audio, or even hand-written portions. The need here is to be able to make complex, pretty notes that will be accessible for years to come. This necessarily means the tool has to have a cloud backend to make sure your notes are always saved online so they are never lost and are accessible from everywhere. The major contenders here are Microsoft OneNote and Evernote, among others. I personally prefer OneNote.
The thing I noticed after making my notetaking software choices was that once I had picked them, I ended up using them more. A tool you use more because you want to, is a good tool. As a result, this has helped me keep more things for posterity (Hello, my name is Chris, and I am a digital hoarder.) The benefit is that I take and keep more notes now than I ever did before, which means I retain more knowledge, thoughts, ideas, and information than I did before and that's a net positive.
Notetaking isn't just about the software you use, though.
There needs to be a methodology to make sure you get the most out of your notes. Follow these steps:
Write your notes as you're learning the thing. They don't need to be pretty; but they do need to be minimally understandable. This step can be done in a quick notetaking application with a cloud backend.
Within 24 hours, go over your notes and rewrite them so they are structured and pretty (Heading 1, Heading 2, bulleted lists, identify action items, etc.) This is the most important and valuable step that I didn't do for years. This step helps you make sense of your notes, but more importantly: Of what you learned. Most of the value of your notes are yielded in this step. In this step, you might even come up with questions you hadn't thought of when you first took your notes. Questions whose answers will likely yield further insight and understanding into the new thing you're learning. This step needs to be done in a persistent notetaking application.
Within 7 days, review your notes. This helps you make sure your notes make sense, but also helps you recall what you learned. Feel free to edit, update, or tweak your notes to make them even more easy to understand
Refer to your notes whenever you need to in the future. You will likely have a better understanding of your notes because you now master the subject better, but your notes are also much clearer than they were in the first step
To be clear, I am not some notetaking guru or expert. This is just what has worked well for me over the years.

Thinking thoughts about Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1817), by Caspar David Friedrich, and remembering of this text:
Friedrich painted not in front of nature, but in the studio, with his “bodily eye” closed and his “spiritual eye” open, transforming the experience of nature into a personal exploration. He combined landscape and interior by painting rooms with open windows looking beyond to wider spaces, often with human figures involved in the act of observation. The viewer is invited to identify with the artist’s inner world, but at the same time is made aware of the boundary between the private sensibility and the world at large.
The dominant figure in the foreground has attained the heights – he has achieved the heightened awareness of the Romantic visionary – and yet there is an unbridgeable gulf between him and the sublime world he observes. This is Romantic irony on a large scale.

Foundation for Other Languages: C serves as a stepping stone to learning other programming languages. Understanding C concepts will make it easier to grasp languages like C++, Java, and C#.
Performance and Efficiency: C is known for its speed and efficiency, making it ideal for system-level programming and applications where performance is critical.
Portability: C programs can be compiled and run on various platforms with minimal changes, making it a versatile choice for developers.
Rich Libraries: C has a vast collection of libraries that provide pre-written code for common tasks, speeding up the development process.
Strong Community Support: With decades of history, C has a large community of developers, providing ample resources, forums, and documentation for learners.
Getting Started with C Programming
1. Setting Up Your Development Environment
To start programming in C, you need to set up a development environment. Here’s how:
Choose a Compiler: Popular C compilers include GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) for Linux and MinGW for Windows. You can also use IDEs like Code::Blocks, Dev-C++, or Visual Studio.
Install the Compiler: Follow the installation instructions for your chosen compiler. Ensure that the compiler is added to your system’s PATH for easy access.
Choose a Text Editor or IDE: You can write C code in any text editor (like Notepad++ or Sublime Text) or use an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for a more user-friendly experience.
2. Writing Your First C Program
Let’s start with a simple "Hello, World!" program to familiarize you with the syntax:#include <stdio.h> int main() { printf("Hello, World!\n"); return 0; }
Explanation:
#include <stdio.h>: This line includes the standard input-output library, allowing you to use functions like printf.
int main(): This is the main function where the program execution begins.
printf("Hello, World!\n");: This line prints "Hello, World!" to the console.
return 0;: This indicates that the program has executed successfully.
3. Understanding C Syntax and Structure
C has a specific syntax that you need to understand:
Variables and Data Types: C supports various data types, including int, float, char, and double. You must declare variables before using them.
int age = 25; float salary = 50000.50; char grade = 'A';
Operators: C provides arithmetic, relational, logical, and bitwise operators for performing operations on variables.
Control Structures: Learn about conditional statements (if, else, switch) and loops (for, while, do-while) to control the flow of your program.
4. Functions in C
Functions are essential for organizing code and promoting reusability. Here’s how to define and call a function:#include <stdio.h> void greet() { printf("Welcome to C Programming!\n"); } int main() { greet(); // Calling the function return 0; }
5. Arrays and Strings
Arrays are used to store multiple values of the same type, while strings are arrays of characters. Here’s an example:#include <stdio.h> int main() { int numbers[5] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}; char name[20] = "John Doe"; printf("First number: %d\n", numbers[0]); printf("Name: %s\n", name); return 0; }
6. Pointers
Pointers are a powerful feature in C that allows you to directly manipulate memory. Understanding pointers is crucial for dynamic memory allocation and data structures.#include <stdio.h> int main() { int num = 10; int *ptr = # // Pointer to num printf("Value of num: %d\n", *ptr); // Dereferencing the pointer return 0; }
7. Structures and Unions
Structures allow you to group different data types under a single name, while unions enable you to store different data types in the same memory location.#include <stdio.h> struct Student { char name[50]; int age; }; int main() { struct Student student1 = {"Alice", 20}; printf("Student Name: %s, Age: %d\n", student1.name, student1.age); return 0; }
Best Practices for C Programming
Comment Your Code: Use comments to explain complex logic and improve code readability.
Use Meaningful Variable Names: Choose descriptive names for variables and functions to make your code self-explanatory.

UV Printing – Cures ink using ultraviolet light, resulting in fast-drying and durable prints.
Dye Sublimation – Best for fabric-based prints, producing rich colors and long-lasting results.
Screen Printing – Ideal for large runs of the same design, commonly used for posters and banners.

Keep Text Legible – Opt for bold, easy-to-read fonts to ensure visibility from a distance.
Consider Viewing Distance – Adjust design elements based on how far the audience will be from the print.
