Never gon’ get ma-a-a-rried

First aftg dump of 2021: the ✨ kevaaron wedding ✨

It’s never going to happen.

Oh, I ship them to death. I love them. They love each other. And they very much want to be husband & husband.

Buuuuuuuuuuut but but but. Hear me out. If they want to get married, they’d have to go through the ✨proposal ✨ phase. And that is not happening.

Because.

Height difference.

Kevin’s 6′2-6′3 ass + Aaron’s 5′ flat booty = somebody’s getting unalived.

Outcome #1

Kevin proposes. A year after signing his 1st pro contract, 9 months of pining and 2 years of dating. He’s laid down the bases of his proposal months earlier, with his press attache and Wymack. He’s got a heartfelt letter ready to be posted on every social media he owns. He is in the right place to take the final step towards accepting and loving himself, and Aaron. He got Neil to sneak him one of Andrew’s old rings for measurements. The ring he picked out is beautiful. It’s a simple gold braided band with five microscopic diamonds incrusted into one delicate strand, because #5 Minyard.

So there’s only his question and Aaron’s answer left to be unfolded.

They go to their favorite abandoned skate park near their loft, where Aaron picked up skateboarding again and where he tried to teach Kevin how to do a kick-flip (to this day still, one of Kevin’s greatest failures and one of his absolute best memory).

And as they walk the grass towards the park, Kevin lets go of Aaron’s hand and gets ready to kneel down. The sudden lack of Kevin at his side makes Aaron turn around and-

Kevin is down on one knee.

Except. He’s- They��re- It’s-

Height difference.

Aaron and Kevin are STILL at eye-level. Yeah, Aaron’s got one or two inches on Kevin this way, but they can look directly in each other’s eyes, which- romantic, innit?

Nope. Absolutely not. Remember “How NOT to Talk to Short People” ? This is “How NOT to Propose to Short People”. Because they look like this:

In summary: Aaron baseball-hits the ring with his skateboard, Kevin shrieks like Moaning Myrtle, gets no sex for a week and ends up being kidnapped by Aaron to go to the courthouse.

Outcome #2

Aaron proposes. He does not think it through at all. He buys a fucking orange ring pop at the dollar store one night after his hospital shift because he has witnessed sooooo many proposals in his career so far (and he’s only 25) and he is just- so done with not being taken seriously by his coworkers when he says small things like “date night with Kevin fucking Day” or “moving in with Kevin fucking Day” or “getting a dog with Kevin fucking Day” or “getting another dog with Kevin fucking Day”.

// for purely selfish purposes on my part, the 1st is a fucking Pomeranian (female, orange) that Kevin gifts Aaron, somehow, for Christmas (might write on that later...) and he calls her Madam Patella Tibia Fibula Chicken, Bone-Bone or Chicken for short (Neil, and Neil only, calls her Foxy) + the 2nd dog, Kevin brings it home from an away game in like, Texas or something, and it’s a fucking French bulldog (male, brindle) that he initially names Striker (ugh) but just ends up calling him Mr. Poe?? //

So Aaron’s done. On a free weekend they both have, he goes to *drum rolls* the same abandoned skatepark where he “taught” Kevin how to do a kickflip, etc. They brought Chicken and Poe and a frisbee (either for Poe or *ahem* Kevin himself). Aaron gets Poe to bring back the packaged ring pop in his mouth where he and Kevin stand and-

Aaron gets down on one knee. Both dogs are jumping at Kevin’s legs. And then Aaron realizes at which level his eyes are. Take away one or 2 feet of a 5′0 gremlin standing in front of a fucking Eiffel Tower and you get... Shlong-level:

Aaron throws away the ring pop and leaves without a word while the dogs go wild chasing after the candy. The rest is the same: Aaron ignores Kevin for a week until he gets fed up and drives them to the court house. Kevin still keeps the mangled plastic ring with teeth marks and hangs it on his car mirror.

So I guess they could get married, but they could never have a cute proposal story to share. Never.

Andreil and marriage

Okay so before I get to the fanfic … I know that in actuality a marriage proposal between Neil and Andrew (don’t tell me Nora says it wouldn’t happen, I don’t even care, she said Aaron’s her favourite Minyard, I’m overruling her) would go something like this:

Andrew is threatening to stab the nurses next time Neil lands himself in the hospital and Andrew isn’t allowed in because he’s not “family” in the legal sense of the word.

And Neil’s like “well, we could just get married.”

And Andrew just kind of looks at him for a while. And then he’s like “yes or no?”

And Neil says yes.

And Andrew raises his percentage.

And they make out.

Whatever.

But I just had to indulge myself in thinking that perhaps there would be a universe where Neil and Andrew would acknowledge that they want to marry for FEELINGS rather than convenience.

So. Here goes (hope the read more works this time or this is gonna be a sucky cliffhanger).

Neil’s been going out of his way to do things for Andrew all day.

It’s not unusual for him to do things like make coffee just the way Andrew likes it or keep the cats entertained when Andrew doesn’t feel like being touched (Andrew suspects that’s more to prevent the furballs from being thrown violently across the room), but he’s been making extra effort today. It shows on his face. Andrew can’t help but wonder why; he doesn’t feel like he’s having a bad day and he hasn’t been any more outwardly irritable than usual. Andrew knows that these things are Neil’s way of showing that he cares - that he loves Andrew - and Andrew shows him through his actions in the same way; the words mean nothing to either of them when spoken out loud. They never have and Andrew doesn’t think they ever will. But why Neil would think Andrew would need to be shown this in such abundance today is a mystery.

At least until Neil pulls out the ring.

Andrew has just settled onto the balcony with a cigarette when Neil joins him with a mug of hot chocolate, piled high with whipped cream, which he holds out to Andrew.

Andrew stares at it for a moment. “What’s this about, Neil?”

Neil tilts his head slightly. “What do you mean?”

“I mean this.” Andrew gestures to the mug. “You’ve been acting weird all day.”

Neil sighs, withdrawing the mug and setting it down. “Andrew, I like to do things for you. To care for you. To show you how I -” Neil breaks off, swallows, and produces a small black box from his pocket. Andrew stares. “Andrew, I want to do those things for you for the rest of my life.”

Andrew stands up abruptly, dropping his cigarette from suddenly-shaking fingers. “No, you’re not doing this.”

Neil stares. His cheeks are as red as the sunset painting the sky. He’s clutching the box with contrastingly white knuckles. “What?”

Andrew’s heart is pounding. He’s sure Neil can see it through his T-shirt. “This isn’t - I wanted -”

Neil misunderstands, obviously. Or mishears. It’s unheard of for Andrew to be unable to form a coherent sentence. “This isn’t what you - oh.”

His face is blank - Neil would never make Andrew feel bad for saying no - but Andrew can see the tension in his posture; the slight downturn of his lips and tight shoulders give him away.

Andrew wants to reach out, but he’s overwhelmed, which is in itself still an alien feeling for him. Instead, he turns and walks silently into their bedroom. He goes to the nightstand and fishes out the box he’s been fretting over these past few weeks. For someone who made a point, for so many years, to not feel anything, it’s still maddening for Andrew to have emotions drawn out of himself by Neil. To worry and second-guess and care. To want something. To want Neil. The runaway who Andrew had been convinced would up and leave him at any moment. Until now. Until he pulled out that box.

When Neil finally enters the room, he finds Andrew turning a gold band over in his fingers. Andrew sees him pause, still clutching the box from the balcony.

“Andrew, what -?”

“I wanted to be the one to -” Andrew stops again, standing up and pacing. It’s uncharacteristic for him to feel this on-edge, and it’s precisely the reason he’s been avoiding this.

“I thought -”

“I know what you thought,” replies Andrew, cutting him off. “You’re wrong.”

“Okay.”

Andrew lets his pacing draw him towards Neil. “I want to do those things too, Neil. For the rest of my life.” He takes Neil’s hand and presses the ring into it. “For the rest of our lives. Together.”

Neil’s eyes widen and he smiles, wider even than when they won Olympic gold, when he’d run to Andrew to clasp him in a grip so tight it had knocked the breath out of both of them. Andrew feels his heart warm slightly at the sight; for once, he doesn’t quite hate the feeling.

“Yes,” says Neil, opening the box he’s been holding and pulling out a gold band of his own. “Together.”

Andrew takes the ring, noticing something engraved on the inside. Just one word. Silently, he turns the ring he gave Neil until his chosen engraving is visible. Both rings are engraved with one word each. Andrew’s choice? Yes. Neil’s? Always.

Neil’s smile - if it’s even possible - grows wider. Andrew can’t help but smile back, just for a second. It’s becoming more frequent for Neil to startle smiles out of Andrew when they’re alone.

“Andrew,” says Neil quietly, pulling his gaze from the rings and up to Andrew’s face. “Will you marry me?”

Andrew’s eyes narrow.

Neil shrugs. “I wanted to say the words.”

With a sigh, Andrew pulls him in for a kiss so that Neil’s eyes will be closed when Andrew mumbles, “Yes, Neil. You know it’s yes.” Neil smiles against his mouth, and Andrew tightens his hand around Neil’s hip. “Stay,” he murmurs, pressing the ring tighter into Neil’s palm.

“Always,” replies Neil, smiling again, and for once, Andrew doesn’t correct him.

it’s neil I think?? they’re both stubborn as fuck but I think neil gets so harsh that he scares himself, and he also knows how terrified kevin can be when he’s threatened so like. he’ll feel real bad real quick. In canon he was so pissed at kevin for being a coward, but the longer they’re together the more he realizes that kevin’s just surviving like neil has been his whole life, it just looks different. (after that he starts apologizing by climbing into kevin’s bed or sliding him a shot of vodka or grabbing his gear and kevin’s hand and going to the court)
