hi y'all. i know i don't make a lot of original posts here. however, on may 31st, i watched as my friends and peers were brutalized at the hands of cops from departments across california.
edit 6/12/24: students for justice in palestine at uc santa cruz has published a press release. it is easily the best way to understand what happened that night. please take a few minutes to read it.
uc santa cruz police made a statewide call for mutual aid in order to disband the gaza solidarity encampment located at the main entrance of the campus - initially established at the quarry in the center of campus on may 1, it moved to the entrance on may 20 in solidarity with the UAW strike. on tuesday, may 28, protesters barricaded the main entrance, cutting off the primary way of getting on campus; though the western entrance to UCSC was left unblocked (except for a few hours on tuesday), the main entrance remained obstructed until the raid began late on thursday night. this road blockage is what admin cited as the reason for the raid, along with "campus safety" and "academic freedom".
it's important to note that prior to blocking the road, students had been encamped for 28 days, and had been holding peaceful, law-abiding rallies since october. nothing worked. months of following the guidelines that admin had set, and of course student voices were dismissed and ignored by chancellor cynthia larive and cpevc lori kletzer (the latter of whom, by the way, showed up at 6 am "walking her dog" and smiled while watching her students get suffocated and beaten). the escalation would never have happened if student demands had been met at the very beginning.
hundreds of cops in riot gear from as far out as uc davis showed up to abuse students. over 115 arrests were made, including 3 ucsc professors, transported off by buses that were fifteen years past their intended end-of-use date and had also been servicing the campus prior. is this "campus safety"? is this "academic freedom"?
Tumblr media
from just before midnight until approximately 9am on friday, cops kettled, suffocated, shoved, yanked, beat, and bruised students. one got a battery charge for writhing and bumping a cop after another slammed him in the head with a baton. another had a bag placed over their head, leading to suffocation, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. at least two protesters were confirmed to go to the ER that morning; many more have had to seek medical attention for lasting injuries.
arrestees were given a 14-day campus ban, including those who live on-campus (functionally evicting them & preventing access to their belongings), not to mention subjected to horrifyingly inhumane conditions:

you can find more information on various instagram accounts such as ucscsjp, ucscdivest, fjpucsc, ucsc_encampment, & jawsucsc. there's plenty of other organizations and people posting about this, too. please, don't let ucsc brush this under the rug. demand amnesty for the arrestees and protesters. contact any ucsc admin you can find. the uc has been utilizing police brutality to repress student voices across their institution, with ucla and uc irvine also being victims of this violence. do not let them get away with it.

free palestine, from the river to the sea. if seeing this violence sickens you, remember that this is not even a fraction of what the people of palestine have been enduring for decades. we will not let the university silence us, no matter what.

The youth are the future. Why else would the powers that be focus so intently on keeping them small, repressed and controlled? To those of us ushering in new futures, we understand that seeding hope and resilience in new generations is the actual key. Not silencing.

Just Stop Oil protestors vandalise Stonehenge
Two activists from Britain’s Just Stop Oil painted Stonehenge orange on the eve of the solstice on Wednesday to protest against oil, coal and gas extraction.
Police have arrested two people on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument. A video released by environmental group Just Stop Oil shows two protesters running towards two Stonehenge megaliths and splashing paint while another man tries to stop them.
In a statement, Just Stop Oil said stone structures like Stonehenge are on every continent and people who focus on them don’t think enough about climate issues.
Stonehenge is a group of giant stones set in a circle around 2,500 BC on the Salisbury Plain. Its heaviest stones weigh 30-40 tonnes. The true purpose of the complex is still unknown. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. On the days of the winter and summer solstices, as well as the spring and autumn equinoxes, people can visit the complex free of charge, being able to go inside and touch the boulders.
The Just Stop Oil group has become well known in Britain for its disruptive environmental protests: its activists have blocked major roads, disrupted cultural and sporting events and even poured soup on a Van Gogh painting.

"if you want any political change to happen, you need to vote!!!"
i am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, i really truly am, but we are not going to be able to vote our ways out of this one, guys
there comes a time when the only way to solve a problem is for everyone to collectively rise up together, and i see no better time than when almost 80% of american voters dont want either biden or trump in office. we literally do not need to choose one or the other. you can choose to fight in a way that cannot be ignored. or you can go vote for one of two old men who have literally the same essential goals of funding/perpetuating supremacist, separatist, and militaristic nations and policies.

Russell tells protesters to be fair and look at the good F1 is doing on sustainability | 2023 British Grand Prix
George Russell has urged climate activists to take notice of the changes Formula 1 is making to improve its sustainability and not target it with protests. A series of sporting events in Britain have been targeted by members of Just Stop Oil, who are campaigning for an end to the use of fossil fuels. A group from the organisation invaded the track at the start of last year’s British Grand Prix and were subsequently arrested and charged. Similar protests have disrupted the Wimbledon tennis tournament and the Ashes cricket series in recent weeks. Russell said extra precautions have been taken to avoid a repeat during this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. “We put our trust and faith in F1 and Silverstone and the FIA,” said the Mercedes driver, who is also a director of the Grand Prix Drivers Association. “I think there’s 100 extra marshals around this weekend to try and stop anybody running onto the track.” He warned that any protests involving an invasion of the track could put lives at risk. “I feel that we’re all open and free to try to cast our views, but doing it on a live Formula 1 track is pretty irresponsible and extremely dangerous for whoever the protestors are,” he said. “Not only them, for drivers, marshals, who potentially be running after people.” F1 plans to reduce its carbon emissions to net zero by 2030. As part of that it intends to introduce a fully sustainable fuel source in 2026, when it will also increase the proportion of engine power which is generated electrically. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free Russell said those who have targeted sporting events with climate protests recently should make themselves aware of the positive changes F1 is making. “I’d encourage these protesters to look at the good that Formula 1 is doing on a sustainability perspective,” he said. “We’re going to 100% sustainable fuels in the future. “As a sport, as teams, as individuals, we’re doing a huge push on the sustainability front and I think would only be fair for them to have a look, see what we’re doing, even open conversations with us before recklessly running onto a circuit when we’re driving past at 200 mph.” Russell’s team mate Lewis Hamilton said he is “really hoping that we’ve learnt a lot from last year’s experience and that won’t happen this weekend.” He pointed out Mercedes is also working to improve the sustainability of its F1 programme. “From my perspective, and I think my team’s, we are very, very focussed on sustainability,” he said. “We believe in what people are fighting for and we are making those changes as a sport. “But safety is key. We don’t want to be put in harm’s way and we don’t want to put anyone else in harm’s way. So if there was to be one, we hope that it’s not on track.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2023 British Grand Prix Browse all 2023 British Grand Prix articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

Lol  it’s all ‘we should center the voices of the victims of Imperial core’ till people here realize that this has to be a sustained effort that would need the same energy from beginning to end, no matter how many days, months or years go by. Really  crazy that just when so many Gazans are on the site trying to reach out to us, Palestine seems to be falling out of relevance because the coverage of protests in the imperial core has begun to die down

"Just Stop Oil" Activists Target Private Jets and Cultural Heritage Sites in Climate Protests
In a bold move to draw attention to the climate crisis, “Just Stop Oil” activists recently sprayed orange paint over private jets at Stansted Airport, including a plane owned by pop star Taylor Swift. Just Stop Oil sprayed orange paint on private planes at Stansted Airport
Eco-activists have entered the grounds of a London airport and poured orange paint over several private aircraft, AP News reports.
Essex Police said two women have been arrested in a private area of London Stansted Airport on suspicion of criminal damage and interfering with the use or operation of national infrastructure.
Environmental group Just Stop Oil posted a video showing someone breaking through a fence and then a woman using a fire extinguisher to spray orange paint on at least two private aircraft.
An airport spokesman said the incident happened three miles (5 kilometres) from the main terminal and police said there was no threat to the public.
The airfield, 30 miles (50 kilometres) northeast of central London, is the city’s third busiest airport and is frequently used by government officials and world leaders including US President Joe Biden.
Just Stop Oil reported that Taylor Swift’s plane was parked at the airfield, but Essex Police said the pop star’s plane was not at the airport. Swift is performing three concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium from Friday to Sunday.
The arrests come a day after two activists from the band were detained for spray-painting Stonehenge with orange paint.
Through their protests, supporters of Just Stop Oil are demanding that the UK government end the extraction and use of fossil fuels by 2030. To do this, eco-activists block oil terminals and paint over artworks in public galleries.

An open letter to the President
POTUS, thank you for taking action on settler violence in the West Bank!
584 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
I want to thank President Biden for the Executive Order he just issued addressing the situation in the West Bank, including settler violence. The President has determined that this situation “constitute[s] an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” and I agree. If peace is our objective—and it must be—such violent settlers represent an obstacle that must be overcome. As J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami said: “This significant Executive Order provides American officials with powerful tools to deter further violence and extremism, prevent escalation and better ensure the safety of everyone living in both Israel and the West Bank. The Biden Administration is sending a clear message to extremists in the West Bank: There will be consequences. “Just as the United States has rightly doubled down on sanctioning terrorists and terror organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah that have targeted Israelis for decades, so too must it take steps against those who engage in terrorism against Palestinians. The situation on the West Bank cries out for justice and accountability, and this is a major step in the right direction.” I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for taking this step. And thank you for continuing to work towards a ceasefire, more aid for suffering Gazans, an immediate return of the remaining hostages, and an eventual two-state solution. The great majority of us desperately want an end to the carnage. We want peace. We’ve got your back as you work to achieve this.
