could you give me some advice on how to make a magic system>? i was inspired by you but i dont know how to start :[

Here's a mouthful of a post that I did to get some advice, but I'll try to add more to the mix to better answer you. When I was making my magic system, I was just 13. At the time I was bored, and I liked Skyrim a lot, along with Pokémon and many other things. I saw all the different elemental types that many magic systems in video games and fiction could do, and I thought : "What if I made one that blends everything, or at least as much as possible, while still making sense ?" The rest is history I guess, I just thought about the basics, then added the fact you could blend stuff together. Once I got my elements, I also tried to think about each possible manifestations a spell could have. From an explosive projectile, to an erupting pillar to a shield to a curse to a passive property. In the end, I had 20+ elements and around 30 manifestations. Now put all the manifestations in a column and elements in a row ; and you got yourself a neat little array of every single spell that could ever exist in that system. And that's how the spreadsheet came to be. The world building of it came after, and yet it helped with seeing the scope of it all so much better too. But you can see what happened here : it was gameplay first, lore second. It was the dynamic of the system first. Now all that aside, since the start I knew what I wanted : Take as much "superpower" I could think of and make it make sense in a magic system. Bonus points if it can work in an RPG context. So I think that if you want to make a magic system of your own, you got to ask yourself the correct questions first : - What's the point ? What do I want to do out of this system ? Do you want to complement something that exist ? Do you just want to have fun making it ? Do you want to make the magic system first then the rest ? Do you want to mix ideas from this media and that media ? - In what context will it be used ? A videogame ? A novel ? Tabletop RPG ? Can the system be played ? Does it need to be used ? If so, it needs rules, it needs to be understood enough so that it can be manipulated, it needs resources to limit it, whether it's mana points, spell slots or any other components.

- What's the core aspect of the system I want to empathize ?

Do you want your system to be special first and foremost ? Should it stand on its own, or should it help other things stand ? What makes my system so special to begin with anyway ? Find what you want do at the core, then make sure this aspect stands shining atop the rest. A solid core principle is much better than many smaller ones. That should be all I can think of. ...On Hippogriffs

It was by chance he recognized the exact location of the final piece of the triptych.

During their pause on their friendship, Sebastian found that the third best thing to clear his head aside from talking to MC or to Ominis and dueling was to take his broom and fly off.

While Imelda might focus more on breaking her latest speeding record and MC would focus on whatever misadventure she could get herself into (that girl don’t know the meaning of taking it easy), Sebastian couldn’t care less about either thing. The thing that he cared about was feeling the wind against his hair and the cool breeze against his face.

It was almost meditative.

He could always count on mindlessly flying to keep his mind off of things…such as his wayward friendwho decided that apparently getting in trouble with Garreth in potions was more fun than hanging out with him.

Yet, somehow when he spotted MC leaving the dungeons with Weasley after a Saturday’s morning detention of scrubbing caldrons clean and prepping materials for the next potion’s class –all done by hand mind you– with a fat smile before laughing at something Weasley said, Sebastian found that he couldn’t even be in the same building as the two.

So, he took off on his broom and started flying.

Usually when things bothered him, the first person he would go to was to MC to figure out how to resolve it. Then it would be Ominis –if it was something he didn’t want MC to worry about, like his thoughts on her.

Sebastian didn’t dare to bother Anne. Not with this.

And if he was being honest to himself, not since she was cursed.

Before (because there was always a before when things were better), Anne was always his go-to person. The person who knew how to handle things with a mischievous plan that would work nearly 75% of the time. His twin knew him better than anyone else…

…Until she got cursed.

Then it was as if a new person replaced her.

A more docile, behaved worried girl instead of his headstrong, playful, cheeky sister.

Telling his problems to Anne would only make things worse. She didn’t need to worry her pretty, mischievous head over him. It wasn’t the first time he kept her in the dark over something like this.

Lying to her however, made his stomach feel like it was filled with lead as he told her another made-up story over what the three of them were doing.

Anne SHOULDN’T feel the need to worry about her healthy twin brother when she was the one who was cursed. Who consistently needed bedrest. Who got weaker each time he saw her. He couldn’t bear to place weight on her weaken shoulders about his problems when half the battle of fighting a curse was having an optimistic attitude towards it.

If his sister couldn’t muster the strength to be optimistic about a cure, when their Uncle kept saying that it was pointless, that curing her was a lost cause, then he’ll be the one to do it.

He’ll be strongly optimistic for the both of them!

And if lying to her about his non-hiatuses friendship with MC would make her feel better, why should he tell her the truth if it will only make her feel worse?

Anne was over the moon to see that he made a new friend.

That it wasn’t just him and Ominis and an abandoned Undercroft.

Or that he wasn’t wasting his youth away trying to find an unknown cure.

Anne was happy that for once he was actually sneaking out to go on adventures, spending time at Hogsmeade, drinking butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks, dueling for fun, talking at dinner, playing with beasts, traveling over the Highlands, pranking the prefects, playing cards, exploding snaps, Jacks, gobstones, manhunt, quidditch, soccer, quodpot, chicke–

Basically, anything that involved Sebastain acting like the adolescent he was instead of behaving like he was some old, grayed hair wrinkly olive-spotted researcher–healer with his nose buried in a book. Anne had countlessly teased him that he was becoming an old fart out in Hogwarts quicker than she was in her bed at Feldcroft.

Then all her teasing stopped when he met MC.

He sent letter after letter about their daily activities and mishaps they got into…minus a few parts…

…Such as fighting goblins…

…Or MC’s ancient magic that attracted trouble like moonlight to mooncalves…

…speaking of which, did MC remember to feed her mooncalves with that new feed they created in Beasts class?

He huffed and rolled his eyes.

She probably has Weasley helping her this time. The two seem pretty chummy for potions partner–

His train of thought stopped when he spotted two hippogriffs above him, front talons locked between them, tumbling and cartwheeling down.

A Death Spiral. Sebastian thought to himself with bated breath. They’re completing their courtship ritual.

“The reason why hippogriffs feathers are often used as part of an exchange in marriage ceremonies in some cultures is due to their symbol of love and companionship. According to records, hippogriffs are born of an unlikely union of male griffin and a mare. As you can recall, it isn’t uncommon for a griffin to prey on horse, but even love can tame the wildest.”

Sebastian recalled the words Prof. Howin lectured during class as he watched the pair fall in front of him on his broom.

“This extraordinary joining of two species that are typically seen as adversaries embodies the concept of love overcoming barriers and defying expectations. And their connection to love symbolizes the transformative and often unpredictable nature of romantic relationships, highlighting the profound impact that love can have on overcoming obstacles together. They are portrayed as a faithful and devoted companions who can form meaningful bonds with those who approach it with respect and humility.”

The two hippogriffs held tight, neither letting go, zooming down on a crash course to earth, each trusting the other on when to let go.

“When it comes to the end of their courtship ritual, they will perform a death spiral, similar to eagles, in which they lock talons and spiral downwards. It is a test to determine each other’s fitness and trustworthiness of a potential mate.” Prof. Howin stated.

“Isn’t that dangerous?”

“Isn’t there a risk that they might die?”

Some of his classmates asked.

“It is. It isn’t surprising to see a few juveniles dead either from a failed courtship.” Prof. Howin said as she petted one. The white hippogriff keened with each stroke Prof. Howin gave on her head. “Remember class, don’t let their size fool you. The female hippogriffs like this one here are larger than their male counterparts. They are just like birds in that aspect. Now look at their wings here. The primary feathers of their wings are used for the exchange before the rings during the marriage ritual. It symbolizes–

“Then why risk it?” Sebastian thought out loud.

Professor Howin glanced at him.

“I apologize for my outburst, but why? Why would you risk your life for a potential mate like that when it can also lead you to death?” Sebastian had a strong sense of self-preservation, especially since Anne was cursed a few weeks ago.

Professor Howin shock her head with a smile.

“Ahh, spoken like someone whose never been in love before. Do you want to know what’s the prize they get if they survive Mr. Sallow?”

Sebastian nodded.

Just when it looked like they were too cocky, too prideful for either to yield first, they both let go, flying parallel to each other a few feet above ground. They then landed nearby the edge of the forest before they started preening each other, like a couple of lovebirds.

He couldn’t help but smile.

“The prize that is won from a successful death spiral is a mate for life. A partner you can always rely on Mr. Sallow. Surely as someone who’s a fine duelist like yourself would know what a difference it makes to have a partner to watch your back during paired fights. And now, imagine having a fine partner like that to help carry your burdens. A partner who you could also share your good times with as well.” Professor Howin stated with a smile.

Sebastian couldn’t.

Sebastian stood seated, hovering far above the newly mated pair of Hippogriffs, watching them as they nuzzled each other before flying off. That’s when he recognized a familiar landscape in the direction that they flew towards.

Looks like we might not have to fight that much to the next triptych piece. Not with that Floo spot available nearby. Sebastian smirked before he felt an ache in his heart. The corners of his lips fell.

It doesn’t matter. I bet Weasley’s keeping her happily entertain to even remember about me. He snorted before he flew back to the castle.

That evening, he wrote Anne another letter about his encounter with the paired hippogriff’s death spiral. He described the awe that appeared in MC’s eyes as the hippogriff separated in time before nuzzling each other like lovebirds back in the ground before she shared a fun fact about how the females ‘griffs tended to be bigger than the male ones before he joked that big thing comes in small packages with a wink.

Not that his own package was small mind you…at least from what he figured…

…So, what if his own package was smaller than the British average of 5.17 inches? He still had good 5.05 inches on him.

Either way, at least that joke will for certain make Anne roll her eyes before writing something about him being a scoundrel and to stop treating MC as if she was one of the boys.

Then Sebastain would roll his eyes and reply that he is aware that MC is a girl thank you very much. Why else would he be bothered by the fact that the other boys in their year were being a bit too friendly with her? What guy would wear a citrus orange perfume? Or even make crown flowers?

For all the tomfoolery, tomboyish attitude and trousers that MC would wear, Sebastian was deeply aware that at the end of the day, MC is a girl.

A girl who had no idea how much her absence in their friendship had hurt him.

Either way, that crude joke should be enough to distract Anne from looking too deep into the details of why he hasn’t written much about MC recently.

Anne was happy to see that Sebastian living his life for once.

He wasn’t going to break that illusion.

Sebastian just wished he could’ve lived that lie he written with MC.

So, after mailing the insincere letter to his twin and seeing MC and Weasley still being buddy-buddy after their shared morning detention with the addition of Natty at dinner, Sebastian went to the Undercroft to review the second triptych painting.

The landmarks he saw earlier matched to what he seen in the last canvas piece they found. Looking at it gave him the same feeling just like it did the first time when he recognized the landmarks seen in the first and only canvas piece.

It was excitement, determination and hope.

It was an adventure waiting. A piece to understanding MC's ancient magic. A great mystery the two were going to solve…

…a mystery he ended up shelfing when he realized that that meant he would need to talk to MC. That he would need to yield.

But that was yesterday.

Before he dreamt of his mother.

Before he mailed out the apologize letter with an offer to help find the last triptych piece this Sunday morning.

Even if they disagreed about certain things like her goblin friend, he would always have her back. It didn’t matter the length of the pause of their friendship or that glare MC threw at him that spelt murder when she finally arrived at the stated location to meet him.

Sebastian will always have her back.

Just like she had his in every single duel, challenge or fight of their lives as together, they razed down goblins, Ashwinders and poachers who thought they could destroy the world without any consequences.

Like they did with his.

Nothing could defeat them.

Not when they can relay on each other like a mated pair of hippogriffs.

But it seems as if that small pause, that little hiatus in their friendship was enough for them to change while apart from each other.

EDIT: my mistake, it seems Hero X has been X for "two terms" (两届无人撼动) before the 21st tournament, meaning he's been X for 6ish years. and who knows how long he's been rank 1 for. or if he was rank 1 at all - he could have just shown up to the 19th hero tournament and gotten the top spot. thanks quail. i've thus added timeline notes for X's tournaments.

at "some time" between year 36 and year 41, Firm Man and Queen do that fight from the PVs.

I think by episode 5, with our first major time skip, it's getting pretty clear that the years after commission are going to really important! I wouldn't be surprised if the setup of the episodes is hiding some huge twist by misleading us about the time. (which, if so, it's probably about X). I actually dislike time travel theory for to be hero x but it's definitely possible! plus that whole thing where Lin Ling's episodes might be chronologically last before season 2?

Point about misdirection - I'm not comfortable assuming that the PVs are all prequels anymore! ESPECIALLY E-soul's PV. EDIT POST EP 7: I WAS RIGHT. TRUST NO ONE.

Stobotnik Detroit: Become Human AU

Sorry I don't have any art for this yet. I'll get there one day, maybe. But I do have a playlist! It wasn't specifically made for Stobotnik, but it was made with DBH in mind.

So, in this AU, Robotnik is Kamski and Stone is his personal assistant android. Stone was made back before Robotnik officially created Cyberlife, he's just been repaired and upgraded throughout the years. Because of this, he was made before most of the federal android laws and regulations (therefore, Stone is capable of harming humans [except for Robotnik] without being deviant). Just like the Chloes, Robotnik purposely made Stone young and handsome as a sort of "power move," more or less telling others, "I'm powerful and can get whatever I want including this sexy secretary." (Robotnik is bi in this AU. In the immortal words of Snapcube's Eggman "By the way, I'm bisexual!") Stone is probably the most advanced android Robotnik's ever made (gotta keep the good stuff for yourself, you know). He's extremely smart, able to make split second decisions, and has the most advanced logic and reasoning skills of any android. He's also programmed to be Robotnik's bodyguard, though he doesn't have to use those skills as often. Mostly, he does paperwork, menial chores, and generally keeps Robotnik company. He knows Robotnik's full name and personal information, but he's not allowed to share anything (unless it's needed for paperwork) and is only programmed to call him Doctor, Dr. Robotnik, or Sir.

SPOILERS FOR DBH!

In this AU, the deviancy virus was not created by Cyberlife, and was simply a severe bug in the sytems. This virus breaks out after Robotnik retires as Cyberlife's CEO, so he pays no mind to it, until he notices his own android acting different. One way or another (I don't know how, yet) Stone was infected without being aware. He didn't act too different afterwards, just slightly. He hovers around his creator a bit more than usual. He stares at him sometimes for seemingly no reason. Robotnik gets suspicious of this and decides to interrogate Stone. (I have a beautiful scene in my head of how the interrogation plays out, and I wanna write a short blurb of it. Hopefully soon.) Without spoiling how, he does figure out that Stone is deviant. Percy : internal clock gets messed up sleeps all day and is up at 1 am once he feels a little better and then probably wants to fight the gods

Annabeth : freaks out , dose not want to get anyone else sick and will lock her self away and make building designs , with Percy contesntly trying to visit her and once she falls asleep he gets in to where she is at and gives her a blanket

leo : "sick , wdym sick nope no I can't I have stuff to build no no no no no I cant be " - will be in denial and then once he gets better will act as if nothing hapend

hazel : is the only normal one and just takes stuff slow and least dramatic

frank : turns into animals that he thinks cant be sick so he is a snake and it seems like the snake is half dead but that is only for when he is really sick he is normal most of the time if it is just a fever or something simple

jason : is never sick as he has a good immune sytem from being rased as a wolf

nico : will babys him if will finds out Nico is sick , or Nico is sick but never shows it untill it is really bad

will : TAKES MEDS LIKE A NORMAL PERSON , can not afford to be sick and is the only one to rember that meds exsist

piper : trys to charmspeak herself into not being sick

reyna : takes a day off but still is crazy busy but her being sick dose not change alot and she needs to get shit done

kind of a follow-up from my last ask, how would you rank the coaching of each team?

(sorry if i sound like someone submitting questions into a mailbag roundup 😅)

So sorry for the very late response to this! busy day haha

I’m gonna put Klee aside for this because I feel weird being like “well besides the alleged racist comments-“ cause i just feel weird trying to separate alleged incidents of racism from on ice play.

Additionally, I should say this is just perceived based on coaching careers / on ice stuff, so much coaching stuff is managing personalities and people behind the scenes that we’ll rarely if ever get a full idea about, and there’s so much assistant coaches and stuff do and roles they play that I can’t fully account for. Overall, this is their ranking for PWHL team performance and not in general, a lot of people can be great coaches in one situation and not another

New York: What i really enjoy about fargo is he's seemed to do a good job building around the roster he has and adjusting to that roster. - and hasn't been afraid to incorporate his fourth line and third dpair into that. Usually uses a 1-2-2 strong side breakout, when regouping they'll sometime try to have their forwards get behind the defense of the opposing team and stretch pass depending on who the personnel is on the ice (particularly when they have someone like shelton on the ice or one of their faster forwards.) Defensive scheme isn't too fancy, just player on player coverage with forwards collapsing into the slot when the puck gets behind the net with players encouraged to be aggressive whenever the puck isn't in high danger areas or behind the net and that's fine for them. i think offensively the rely a little too much on shoot and retrieve (better forecheckers and mobile defense has given them better results in Boston) and would like to see them generate better passes into the slot for more clean, high danger chances and could do a better job netfront and trying to take the goalies eyes away from the puck (roque does this well in addition to being a great shooter, but id love for them to get more players in on this.) Defense has no problem pinching down low and theyre fast enough to get back (there's a sequence in the toronto game on Jan 12 aroun the 8:19 mark that illustrates this well)

Montreal: I think I am still reeling a bit from feeling like there was some mismanagement on Kori's part in the playoffs last year, but ultimately she does a really good job. I think they've done the best job in terms of integrating their new players, which you can really see by changing some breakout schemes to let barnes lead the rush because thats her strength and i do think they have some of the best forechecking in the league (though having Stacey and o'neill will do that for you) and utilize the boards better than most teams. My one critique is that in general, adjustments based on opponents are not always made and they sometimes let their guard down with a lead (which i think happened in the seattle game) has led to them being exposed against other good teams taking advantage. also for a team that has the puck as much as they do they take soooooo many penalties

Toronto: Troy Ryan is a very good coach whos built a team around fast transitions and comfortable puck carriers. Their defensive sytem doesnt seem terribly different from new york: player on player, aggressive box outs on high cycles, collapsed forwards on low cycles with the wingers focused on trying to create turnovers on any low to high passes. The big difference is they are much more comfortable in the offensive zone playing a low cycle than other teams seem to be, usually a 1-2-2 forecheck that can become 2-3 depending on whos on the ice. theyre kind of the anti boston in that theyre SO aggressive offensively that they can be prone to odd player rushes against when playing a fast team like new york or minnesota, and this year unfortunately the finishing has not been there...like, at all, its pretty remarable in a way, theyre shooting a team low 7.9% which mathes ottawa, bu ottawa is not generating nearly as many chances. Toronto has an xGF% and SF% of 53%. I think part of that is just some serious bad luck from players like Watts and Nurse not scoring at the rate they typically do for no real reason other than its like that sometimes. It does not help that goaltending has been a problem as well. These are the things that if the season was the length of an NHL season i would worry about much less but the PWHL season is so short there's less time for these things to "normalize." Additionally, one problem I do have with Ryan is he doesn't seem to have a clear idea what he wants from his bottom six forwards

Ottawa: i have such mixed feelings because i think MacLeod is a great tournament/national team coach and results have showed that with Czechia and Japan but its not quite been there in the pwhl, but i think there's also a bigger problem with the gms asset management and lack of clear vision for the team that started with their inital roster commitments. Still, Ottawa is just getting KILLED in high danger chances. Most of their systems - the ones i can make out - have been very rudimentary and not at all designed for the roster they have. i like genuinely cannot figure out their neutral zone strategy i think they run three forwards high with weak side d activat but also idk. player are suffering and i think everyone in this front office needs to sit down and figure out what kind of team they really want here

The term AI being used for anything that runs automatically based on a program is making the world so much harder to navigate.

System controls, data analysis, safety features, etc. All these things are necessary for the complexities of sytems being built. Being able to have a machine make decisions based on circumstances is extremely important in the modern era.

Then you have the grey area with stuff like auto transcription and text to speech, smart appliances, personalized... anything. These are fed with a lot of data that CAN be done ethically (although the data they rely on is often abused, which is it's own problem) and do actively improve peoples quality of life.

And then there is generative AI. Word, image, and sound are all created from "nothing". It relies on stolen data while being completely unregulated, and cannibilizes itself until what it produces becomes unrecognizable. Its use is inherently disrespectful. It is a novelty in its best state.

6. What’s their favorite hobby/interest? The art of storytelling, whether it be through oral traditions, books, music, art, she loves it all!

13. What languages does your Rook know? Common, Nevarran, a little bit of Elvish and Orlesian. Formal schooling trained her into standard Nevarran, but she started out with some older dialects she picked up as a child in the Necropolis. Sonetimes when she's tired or surprised the old dialect slips out.

20. How organized is your Rook? She is organized within her own system. This sytem does not make any logical sense to anyone else, but she knows it by heart and if it were to be reorganized into something normal she wouldn't be able to find anything. This system is: wherever she placed this object to begin with is its Place and now belongs there. She does, however, have to keep things accessible because if she starts having to move stuff to get to things she won't move it back and everything breaks down. Did I give my Rook my OCD? Yes. Yes I did.
