I’m embarrassed to ask but so many fav’s are going there so how do you use ao3?

hello hello!

do not be embarrassed at all! and hopefully, i can try and help.

now, i wish to preface this by saying there's likely guides already on tumblr and i don't mean to be rehashings what they might already say/have shared, but I'm going to try and give a run down of things that might help. now, I've done this as if you're a reader, but if you're a writer and want help, pop back in!

I asked my good friend @toomanytookas for help with this one so I knew we was covering off a lot and she lovingly helped me with finding some additional resources to support my bits!

searching for your people

there are a few different search options available on AO3 to find the things you want. if you know the name of the user, you can use the search bar (as seen below).

or if you're after a certain pairing, you can use the search option.

you can then search from: works, bookmarks, tags or people.

i tend to use "works" but, others may have their own preferences. but i find this is the easiest way for me to find the things i'm after.

i don't tend to fill in every bit of info, but the ones i do are in 'work tags':

fandoms

relationships

additional tags

i might check 'single chapter' (in work info) if i just want to read a one shot, but most of the time i just see what spits up. for me, additional tags is what makes navigating AO3 so much easier because I can filter by a trope (friends to lovers, colleagues, second chances) or i can filter by a "mood" (smut, fluff etc.). when you've filled in your desired bits you can click search and then your results will show.

ANOTHER great way to search is if you already know the pairing you're after. so say you're reading a Francisco morales x reader and you want MORE of that, click that tag on a piece of work and a new search will show up of all the works with that pairing.

you then have a new filter choice on the right where you can 'exclude' tags or characters too.

2. supporting your people

so, you've found yourself a writer you adore, and you've read a piece of their work. if this is a one shot, you can:

drop a kudos (like a like, but you can only ever give it once)

leave a comment (even writing "love it" or an emoji makes a day)

bookmark (this is more for you if you loved it, you can bookmark things and they save to YOUR bookmarks and you can read again without searching for it - like a lil library)

now, say that piece is a multi-chap/collection, and you want to subscribe and be notified, you can 'subscribe' at the top of the fic

bookmarks do not notify you of a new chapter, but a subscribe will.

if you love the writer and want to know as soon as they drop anything, you can click their name, go to their profile and click 'subscribe' just under their name in the top right.

3. going back in time... the AO3 way

okay, we've all been there when you're engrossed in something and then life happens and you close a tab or your phone crashes (tumblr app, grr) and then the work is lost. on AO3, if you're logged in, you have a thing called 'my history' and in this is every work you've clicked on. wahay! this has saved me so often because i flick between phone and laptop a lot.

4. a final thing to be aware of...

warnings - a writer can choose to give a warning to the piece. many will use 'creator chose not to use archive warnings' or 'no archive warnings apply', but there are a few to keep an eye out for, such as:

graphics depiction of violence

major character death

rape/non-con

underage

'choose not to use warnings' is a read at your own risk, and i always recommend checking out the additional tags for the piece just so you know if there's any trigger warnings.

this is just a top level thought process of what i thought might help, but if there's any specific questions i will deffo try to help. this resource has a ton of helpful things too. there's also AO3 FAQs which might be able to help if i didn't actually help. and this absolutely brilliant guide created too!

For the prose thing ... Hunters getting devoured by Talas during a storm?

Like... They see the purple light under the waves... Just how big that leviathan is... And then he emerges. Also! I suppose since Talas is a hunter himself, he'd be quite smart about fighting them. Would maybe also terrify these guys. I wonder if they'd figure out in their last moments that this infamous leviathan is also a person.

And storm for cool setting. And you like storms, so yay, storms!(?)

A story for my current header sounds GREAT, actually :] I may have gone a bit too overboard (heh) just bc it was a fun prompt and I am not immune to ocean violence. Whole thing is under the readmore. Hope you enjoy?? 😳😳😳

Something was tugging at the lines. Hard. 

It caught the crew by surprise, as their prey had been long weakened, and the hooks in it had simply been set to reel in the body for transport. The vessel had been made to fight gigantic creatures, leviathans. It had been fit to reel in the massive creatures, once dead or dying, and tug them to shore. But this? This was too much. The strain on the cables was immense, the gears on the mechanisms screeching from the pressure. 

“Shit. SHIT- We’re capsizing!” The bosun’s scream tore through the storm wind, panicking as they realized what was happening. “We have to loose the cables or we’re going under!” 

And yet, before anyone could react, the sudden resounding twang of one of the lines snapping made everyone pause in shock. Their galleon grade steel cables had snapped. And then another. And another. The pressure was violently lifted off of the boat, it’s straining engines suddenly jolting the boat in the opposite direction, the crewmembers thrown off of their feet and slammed onto the deck, just in time to see the culprit show itself. 

The massive head of a leviathan, impossibly huge, erupted from the ocean, the hunters’ quarry hanging limply from its jaws. The bosun raised their head up just long enough to see the tail disappear down the monster’s maw moments before the creature dove beneath the surface again, the omen of its purple glow now visible through the foam of the enraged waters. 

The Worldeater.

This was it then. The crew already knew. No one had encountered this thing and lived to tell the tale, especially if you saw it up close. As if on cue, it reared its head once more on the opposite side, knocking out the radio tower on the main mast, the trajectory of its bite headed directly for the deck. The jaws of the monster closed firmly around the ship, tendrils worming their way out of its throat and into every nook on the vessel to secure its fate further, grabbing any unfortunates on the way and dragging them to their end. Now the hull itself was fighting against the pressure, the groaning of the metal echoing through every hall, the roar of rushing water drowning out the panicked screaming from the crew as the sea poured into the vessel through the bite punctures. 

As the vessel was pulled completely under, the bosun was, somehow, still alive. At the mercy of the waves, surrounded by debris from their vessel. They wondered if they hid among the rubble, eventually the leviathan might leave and they may be able to flag a passing ship for a rescue. That was a good plan, right? Drowning wasn’t an issue after all. 

And yet. 

Through the warped frame of the already sinking wreck, its eye was honed in on them. A piercing glow ripping through the blackness of the storm. 

How could it have known they were there, when they were completely hidden? How could- 

They didn’t have time to finish the thought.

"Enterprise to Captain Grian. Mumbo here. We are in a declining orbit, sir. Not long before we must leave."

"Any options, Mumbo?"

"Not many, sir. Unless we want to exhaust our fuel."

"Give me ten minutes to finish up here. Officer Scar and I should be back soon. Stand by for beam up."

Never really been on the geography side of Tumblr before, but I wanted to share that, as of yesterday I now have three antique globes!

BUCKLE IN BUDDY

Just as a quick aside before I get started: I'm a slut for linen. I've been super into linen clothing for a few years now and I honestly think linen is the best sustainable fabric. THAT BEING SAID. A lot of linen clothing is expensive??? Like stupid expensive. You can find it cheaper on poshmark and other similar sites, but the plus side of ordering through them is that you can customize it (I never have, but the option's there).

Anyway here's the source shops:

The Maybe Collection One of the few linen stores I've found that is manufactured in the states. I recently discovered their stuff and I'm stoked to find a states-side option.

VIKOLINO Another US-made linen company from my home state, Jersayyyy. I love that one of the models is totally their mom. And their kids clothes are cute.

NotPERFECTLINEN For me this brand is the epitome of linen clothing. Gorgeous cuts that manage to skip over frumpy with lots of variety. Lithuanian-made with a focus on sustainability.

Leka Design I unexpectedly discovered this shop while visiting friends in Victoria, BC. Entering their workshop was like being greeted by old friends (insert joke about friendly Canadians) and while not all their clothes are linen, a lot are, and they're beautiful.

Tsiomi Kids Ukranian linen (and cotton) clothes maker that makes really cute kids clothes for your instagram-worthy family photo shoots. Their adult clothing has the same vibes as Sonderflor.

Linen ID Studio Another Lithuanian linen shop with those cottage-core vibes everyone's looking for, but with a more modern flare. I'm lusting after several of their blouses.

FLAX Can't have a linen shop list without FLAX. They're old school, and while I'm not exactly sure if they're considered "slow fashion", they're sustainably sourced and can be a lot more affordable, especially second hand.

yeah!! i tend to mostly hang around tumblr for that; i'm not sure which utena blogs you’ve already found but theatricalnebula and saionjeans both have rlly good analysis tags

idk what topics specifically you’re interested in but here's a grab bag of some tumblr posts i like: sunlit garden, bird symbolism, shadow girls, aesthetics, juri gender, episode 11, kozue (& miki)

for when you inevitably start a rewatch, or if you just wanna read something episode by episode: I enjoyed vraikaiser’s watch-along blog, they do an extensive blog post per episode with sections on e.g. the shadow play of the episode and whatever anthy’s up to with the context of someone who’s already watched the show before. [caveat that with text that long there’s inevitably gonna be a bunch of takes i disagree with lol but it was a fun read]

also the palace perspective is really good, it’s a ~20000 word essay series mostly focused on nanami and all the sibling relationships in the show. heavy content warning for discussions of abuse/incest in that one for obvious reasons (the writer also has a tendency to take the bleakest possible interpretation of things that are ambiguous in the show)

as for videos, i’ve watched a couple but so far i don’t think they really measure up… i'm sure there's good ones out there but i've been burned by bad nanami and anthy takes too often to venture back in just yet.
