Editing Diary - Day 2

Coursework Development/ Production 2

Our editor fixed any sound problems from the first day on the second day, and we started looking for background music for each scene as he worked on the sound alongside.

We started looking for upbeat songs because the opening scene was so lighthearted, and all we could think of was "Matargashti" from "Tamasha". We chose the song's instrumental rendition since it brightens your mood.

We then began looking for tense music that would unnerve the audience. Following the discovery of these sounds, our editor cut and imported the sounds into the movie to match them to what we had in mind.

Then, while we dubbed our dialogues into English to create the subtitles, our editor got to work on the titling. Hindi, an Indian language, was used throughout the entire film. We have translated the dialogue so that everyone is able to understand what the characters are saying.

i got you!! i'm gonna copy/paste what i said last time but add or subtract things, also i'm gonna link the trailers with subtitles so you can easily figure out if you want to watch it. 

my favorite movie of all time is a bollywood film named veer-zaara but i don’t recommend it as a first hindi film. it’s very, very desi and i think if you haven’t seen a bollywood film before, it can be a little odd. so come back to that one lmao

stree- it’s a bollywood horror-comedy. it’s wonderful. genuinely sooo good.

kapoor & sons- i love this movie so so so much. genuinely so well acted and written

dear zindagi- this movie helped a lot of desis begin to discuss the importance of mental health. obv not enough, but it helped

queen- I FUCKIN LOV THIS MOVIE, it’s a movie about a girl going on her honeymoon alone after her fiance leaves her. it’s sooo good.

tamasha- super good, very underrated. the acting is amazing, the writing is amazing, the music is amazing. so good.

piku- it’s a very dialogue-heavy movie but it’s incredibly good

aashiqui 2- this is the bollywood version of a star is born and i'm recommending it because the music is amazing and i would die for the lead actor. those are literally the only reasons why i'm recommending it fjghdfkg and i couldn’t find a trailer with english subs! :( but i know the movie is on prime video and has subtitles

Movies continue to surprise us even during the pandemic. To quite an extent, it is the movies that kept us away from boredom during the pandemic. We cannot thank enough for the amazing movies we have seen, enjoyed and even cried over. Some stories stay with us for days and leave a lasting impression. These stories can be watched over a million times and still evoke the same emotions. Here is the list of movies from the last decade that filled our hearts with happiness and joy and will be cherished forever.

 1. Udaan

Udaan is one of the finest coming of age Bollywood movies. It is relatable and emotional and we can't get enough of the actor’s cuteness and brilliant acting. Starring Rajat Barmecha and Ronit Roy, Udaan is a movie that touched our hearts.

 2. Gangs of wasseypur 1&2

This movie is a classic and no doubt every youth loves it. It is not just the comical abusive dialogues but the story and acting of each cast member in this movie that makes it awesome. Also being a big break for Nawazuddin Siddiqui Gangs of Wasseypur is a favourite of many in our country.

 3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is about friendship, finding love and overcoming one’s fear. It is a great movie shot in beautiful Spain starring Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar and Suhel Seth. This movie is a rollercoaster ride of fun, emotions and happiness.

 4. English Medium

Remembering the Late Irfan Khan and his amazing acting as always along with co-star Saba Qamar, English Medium is an eye-opening movie for the education system in India. With the right comic timing by Deepak Dobriyal, English Medium is a must-watch movie.

 5. English Vinglish

This is another heartwarming movie starring late. Sridevi. This movie is about a lady who is misunderstood by her husband and daughter and decides to learn English and make new friends from across the world. This movie will leave you teary-eyed by the end.

 6. Tamasha

Tamasha is a slow movie starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone and it is worth it! About a child who is so much into fulfilling the parent’s expectations that he loses his real self. It is a really good movie to watch.

 7. Masaan

The film takes on Indian Parochial society and a debut for both the director and actor, Masaan is an emotional movie. It tells you so much about society and dealing with heartbreak.

 8. Andhadhun

One of the best of its year, Andhadhun is a thriller drama movie starring Ayushman Khurana, Radhika Apte and Tabu. This movie gives you the best suspense and thrill. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should!

 9. The lunchbox

Another heartwarming movie, Lunchbox is about a married woman and widower who exchange letters that starts from a mistaken lunchbox. It is a cute, beautiful and quirky friendship between two strangers.

"Tamasha" this movie has been very close to my heart always. The characters are so relatable. How beautifully Ved and Tara created a story just to take little break from the realities.

We are all living in a story of our own kind and every story is beautiful in its own way. I have read somewhere "life is handful of short stories pretending to be a novel" which is so true. We all have stories and kinda love living in that. I have always been a "movie kinda person". Movies inspire me, no matter what situation i am into. The dialogues, characters..i easily connect with them. But sometime it was difficult to be into the zone because not everyone around you is same as your own understanding. So yes..mostly people think that i am dramatic and crazy.

The twist comes in my life when i met someone like minded and we are both crazy together. I was more than happy that i can relate with him and sometimes i dont even say and he understood. But every story has to finish at some point. It can't go forever. He truly upholded the promise of keeping up the beautiful lie just like Tara and Ved promised each other not to tell the truth. It was really hard to come out of that beautiful story which i never wanted to get over but i was pretending as strong as "Tara" and "Heer to badi sad hai" phase was running in my mind.

Unfortunately "Don" did not came back. That day i got to know the difference of believing in stories and living in stories. We aren't really ready to accept different stories apart from our own. We do know that the other story might be good or we never know even better than ours but still we give hard fight to fit those characters into our story with our own script play. Thats where we make the mistake. I know its hard but not impossible. Playing a different character in some different story is also good at times. It helps you understand yourself better. The best part is i still believe in movies and the strories but i have grown wiser now choosing the scripts. Some of you might think that..oh this is so simple and we know about it. But dear, sometimes we take more time to understand the the simple things in life.

We all have a story to tell whether we scream or yell! Take out your time and make a beautiful story of your beautiful so that when you are in some 60s and looking back at your life, there should be a bright smile on your face.

Kalank- there are no heroes in this story

Date and Year of Release: April 17, 2019. Cast: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Kunal Khemu, Kiara Advani. Director: Abhishek Verman. Running Time: 166 minutes. When it comes to films, Bollywood or otherwise, reviews matter less. The method to my madness is more intuitive when it comes to knowing/choosing which films to watch. Cases in point- Saawariya and Guzaarish by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Tamasha by Imtiaz Ali and Bombay Velvet by Anurag Kashyap. These were panned by audiences and critics alike. The reasons why i loved these films- the themes they attempted to explore and the impact they left on me even after considerable amount of time has passed since their release. Kalank joins this list. But before i begin my review, let me remind you of spoilers. They are inevitable. But will try to avoid them as best i can. So here goes... There are no heroes in this film in the conventional sense, only flawed characters caught in a web of fate. Would i call them antiheroes? I am not sure. The central theme is of course, love. I know what you are thinking. Obvious cliches right? Well, Bollywood is yet to fully throw ‘cliche’ out of the window...i mean, it serves a purpose and i will argue that it drives the story forward at times. Yes, the movie resorts to cliches in parts of the film...ones i hoped that the makers would avoid but it managed to leave an impact so i will willing to excuse that. I am aware that it will take many more years for Bollywood to evolve, and i would add that it is evolving. I add this because it is rare to see mainstream actors try to bring to life, a story that will leave an impression, good as well as bad. Or to put it this way, giving life to a story that has no happy ending in its conventional sense. It was interesting for me to see characters develop in the backdrop of Partition and how it changed the lives of the characters. But i digress... Zafar and Dev, portrayed by Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapoor respectively are shaped by their fate. Both have anger issues with different coping mechanisms. The film is driven by three women, Satya (Sonakshi Sinha), Roop (Alia Bhatt) and Bahar Begum (Madhuri Dixit). The dynamics between them was not one dimensional. Rather, viewers will find compassion, jealousy, love, understanding and even manipulation that seal the fate of all three women towards their individual resolution. There is reality and there is the ideal at the backdrop of the looming Direct Action Day and the subsequent Partition of erstwhile undivided India. The good- Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapoor are excellent. Varun’s kohl lined eyes reveal much of his inner anguish and helplessnes. Aditya’s restrained portrayal of melancholy was beautiful. Both characters so different, yet similar; Alia Bhatt has proven time and again that she is versatile. I judged her harshly for her first film and now she is an absolute delight to watch; Sonakshi reminded me of Lootera, the one film where she acted; Madhuri is graceful. While people rightly praise her dancing skills, they mention nothing of how she manages to up her game even after so many years; The set design is dreamy, lavish and contained and presents us the world of Husnabad; Kunal Khemu who should stop doing mindless films and focus on getting roles like Abdul. I remembered watching him in another gem called Zakhm. He does not speak much but boy do those eyes speak. Who needs dialogue when a look can say much more; The soundtrack which reminded me of some of my favourite Bollywood films. What a surprise that it is Pritam behind the scenes and Amitabh Bhattacharya whose soulful lyrics have given us some of the recent beautiful songs. I cannot stop listening to the songs; The small yet nostalgia tainted scenes between Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit who have given the tinsel town some of its memorable films in the 90’s; The costume department did a commendable job; and finally Varun and Alia together with all its beauty and tragedy. They should date in real life and make us all happy (grins). The bad- The first 15 minutes of the film felt rushed; Introduction of the characters to the audience and in each other’s lives could have been paced better. Rather, it felt too convenient; The lack of silence in the film. Not every scene required background music, particularly the emotional ones. It downplays the intensity of emotions and the scenes concerned, as if they were trivial to begin with; The backdrop of Partition remained as a prop and could have been explored more to add balance and nuance in the overall story; The obvious cliches that serve no purpose; the last 10 minutes where the message was better left unsaid; and Kiara Advani who is reduced to an arm candy. However, with its flaws, Kalank made me smile and cry. And that is saying a lot. It will remain with me. Watch it on the big screen. Rating: 3.5/5 P.S. It has cemented the fandom of Varun Dhawan for me. Maybe i will pay attention to him now. Also, his kohl lined eyes. Men should wear kajal more often and make me sigh. P.P.S: If you decide to watch this film after reading this and still do not like/hate the film, please remember impressions are subjective. What is treasure to me may just be trash for you. So please reconsider killing me for making you spend money to watch Kalank. It’s not my fault you disagree with my views or find the film unbearable. That’s all for now. I hope you enjoy the film when and if you watch it.

Meticulously executed. Some brilliant scenes. But for a film revolving around females, none of these characters worked for me. They were all pitch perfect on paper, actors were splendid...but.. After taste was one of anger. Nothing else. If that was the point of the movie, it certainly hit its target

SO WELL DONE. Splendid and hilarious writing. For such a heavy and almost preachy theme, the movie itself was delightfully handled with the lightest of touches. Vijay Sethupathi and team with their impeccable comic timing were perfectly cast. Rithika Singh was truly the best find of last year. What an amazing actress. And the lip sync. WONDERFUL.

Another feel good movie from the Avasarala camp. Could have done with some crisper editing, but hilarious nevertheless. Loved the use of oka laalanaa. A true bromance indeed. Though the conflict is not really well sketched, the feel good scenes - true to life. Also crush on Naga Shourya stays unchanged.

P.S - Forgot to mention, super chill and completely unapologetic treatment of smoking in the movie.

There are some good movies that were made in the past two decades that have cemented themselves in our hearts.

Each of these movies owe their success to a perfect combination of good direction, good acting, and good cinematography. But the star of the show was always the script. Movies without a good script are like empty vessels that are shiny only on the outside. To prove our point, we bring to you a few dialogues that touched our hearts and gave us major life lessons.

Yes, you should be your own favorite person and definitely love yourself. Geet did right in reminding us something that we all forget often!

If the answer is yes, then you’d connect with this dialogue. Ranbir Kapoor’s acting, in combination with this brilliant script, made this one of the best scenes Bollywood ever had.

5. “Vijay Nahi Toh Kya Vijaylakshmi Toh Hai”- Queen

Rani’s friend Vijaylakshmi reminds her that as long as you have friends, it’s okay to not have your boyfriend. This is one of the most heartwarming scenes of this movie and we love it! Don’t we all want a friend like Vijaylakshmi?

6. “Khuda ki raah mohabbat ki raah hai”- My Name is Khan

Rizwan Khan, in My Name is Khan, says that the path shown by God is that of love and not of hatred and war. This dialogue fits in a scene where he prevents a group of Muslim youth from getting brainwashed by a respectable man (only on the outside) trying to provoke them in the name of religion. This is something that we need to remember — no religion preaches violence. God always wants you to love and be loved.

7. “Kyu sach ka sabak sikhaye, jab sach sunn bhi na paye. Sach koi bole toh tu niyam kanoon bataye.”- Rockstar

This is a line from sadda haq aithe rakh, one of the most popular songs in this movie. We’ve always been taught to learn, believe, and do right things. But when we grow up, we learn that it was mere preaching and all the society actually knows is faking words and making boundaries.

8. “Rona, gussa, nafrat, kuch bhi khulke express karne nahi diya. Ab pyaar kaise express karein?”- Dear Zindagi

Dear Zindagi is a story of a troubled girl who finds her way to self-love. Kaira, the character played by Alia Bhatt, asks if nobody let you express your negative feelings since childhood, how would you ever know how to express love? Our life is a mixture of both negative and positive feelings, and we should learn to accept them as they are instead of living in denial.

9. “Ajeeb baat hai. Kidnap ho gayi, par wahan azaad thi”- Highway

This Imtiaz Ali movie teaches us the value of true freedom. Veera never felt safe in her own house where everyone was bothered only about their reputation, even when she was raped as a child. She goes on to discover real freedom and moves towards a meaningful life after she gets kidnapped by Mahabir.

10. “Barfi adhoora tha, par uska pyar poora tha”- Barfi!

Shruti’s mother talks her out of marrying Barfi, who was hearing- and speech- impaired. Later, she marries a wealthy man, only to regret leaving Barfi, who knew how to love unconditionally, unlike her husband.

We always run towards the things that we want to achieve, often forgetting what we have in our hands already and how precious they are. And by the time you realize their value, you would have run out of time, just like the character Amol, played by Dharmendra in this beautiful movie.

JAB HARRY MET SEJAL MOVIE REVIEW: AN EUROPE TRIP SPRINKLED WITH IDIOCY

Review:

Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Imtiaz Ali seemed like a perfect money minting trio but the much-revered chemistry has fallen well short of expectations. There is a scene in the film where Sejal (Anushka Sharma) says to Harry ( SRK) ‘ Dhoodne se toh bhagwaan bhi mil jaate hain’  but the irony is that the director of such high stature, Imtiaz Ali couldn’t find a meaningful script for this film. The script revolving around the hunt for the missing engagement ring has highly disappointed the fans.

Harry Met Sejal is a story of a Punjabi guy Harry who is a tourist guide in Europe. While seeing off a Gujju family after a successful Europe tour he is acquainted with the fact that Sejal has lost her engagement ring. This embarks the start of a bland journey which encompasses much of the first half of the film. The ring hunt tours them through Amsterdam, Budapest and finally reaches Lisbon. The story progresses through a very predictable storyline where Sejal starts falling for Harry. This mismatching story sees a new chapter when Anushka Sharma finally reaches India after discovering her ring and Harry starts missing her too. Guess what happens next ? I guess we shouldn’t tell you that. Grab a ticket and find out.

It’s hard to digest the fact that Imtiaz Ali who has given us films like Rockstar, Jab We Met and Tamasha, delivers such a blunder with Harry Met Sejal. The fact that Sejal promptly decides to set on a ring hunt leaving her family at the airport and the manner of the discovery of the ring all seem pointless. Imtiaz Ali tries to incorporate some funny elements into the film but the weak script fails them majorly. The story does pace up in the second half but a flat climax again proves to be a dent.

Shah Rukh Khan who plays an upbeat Punjabi guy in the movie does deliver some funny moments in the film through his crazy dialogues in the typical Punjabi accent. He even shares a lip-lock scene with Anushka Sharma but its the whole script in general which fails to bank on the talent of such fine actors.

Anushka Sharma who plays a typical Gujju girl in the movie does have her moments but having set the bar high for herself with movies like PK and Ae Dil hai Mushkil falls well short of those high-quality performances. The music score given by Pritam is average though songs like ‘Radha’ and ‘Phurr’ do provide fancy beats to the audience. Although the movie might disappoint majority of the fans, the saving grace of the movie is the cinematography which vividly captures scenic locations of Europe. The mastery of K.U. Mohanan with camera movements literally takes you on a vibrant Europe tour while being seated in the theatre. Such is the brilliance.

Summing up Jab Harry Met Sejal is basically a Europe tour which is failed by its doltish script which eclipses the talent of its revered cast.
