'Maybe this time, things'll be better' sings the lady, the man on the radio talking over her about some award that she got ... people talking over other people, is anyone really listening? ... out on the road, sidestepping the mud ridges the tractors created, stepping up onto the verges with the dog as car after car after car heads past, watching with wide eyes as a man in his van hurtles round the bend, swerving to avoid the hedge, his eyes intent on his phone. There used to be interesting things to pick up off the road ... a cyclist's sunglasses, an insulated coffee cup, nuts and bolts and links from vehicles and trailers, a bunch of keys that would unlock a multitude of doors. Such treasures are rare now, people more keen to hang on to their stuff or just a change in habits? Faster cars, faster internet, faster food ... the empty containers line the roadsides ... the world hurrying on without even knowing why ...
