"I'm no lady, I'm a Duck!" - Female Representation in 'The Mighty Ducks' Franchise
The Mighty Ducks trilogy may not be the first movies that spring to mind when considering female representation. After all, it is a trilogy in which there are only ever two girls at a time on each line-up of the Ducks team. However, these three girls, in their equally shared screentime with the rest of the cast, come across as considered, well-established characters with a diverse range of talents and personalities, who, depite their gender, cannot be considered as simply the girls on the team, but as players on the team. In D1 they were Connie Moreau and Tammy Duncan; in D2 Connie stayed and was joined by Julie 'The Cat' Gaffney, who both survived to D3. Each of these girls brought something special not only to the Mighty Ducks team but to The Mighty Ducks movies, and each is memorable for their own individual reasons and moments.
Tumblr media
"Let's show these Hawks something really different." Movies like The Mighty Ducks are usually aimed at boys, and as such, the odd time a girl appears, they are the annoying older or younger sister, the bratty, sneering, cajoling, motherly, concerned, unattainable love interest girl character. Always on the margins, to be ridiculed, pined after or fought with briefly then forgotten about while the rest of the story happens. Depending on the role, they'll appear again at the end of the movie, achievement unlocked. While none of the girls in The Mighty Ducks are like this, Tammy Duncan, who could so easily have been the annoying older sister or the pretty love interest, is not portrayed in this way. Tammy is a figure-skater, recruited by Bombay, along with her younger brother Tommy, after he sees Tammy's figure-skating skills before a practice session. Bombay sees Tammy and imagines applying her skills to the hockey rink. "What do I know about hockey?" she demands angrily of her brother, after Bombay convinces her to give it a try. "More than you think," says Tommy, as he lays sprawled out on the ice after being knocked down by his sister in her anger. In the pivotal final game against the Hawks, Tammy and Tommy perform a goal-scoring trick using one of Tammy's figure-skating techniques. Tammy scores the goal. Tammy is an older sister. She is a girly-coded figure skater, compared to the traditionally boyish hockey players. She is scouted by Bombay for her talent and her potential to bring something alternative to the team. She joins in on the classroom fight, ending up in detention with everyone else. She insists that Bombay refer to them as "people" not "guys" and he complies (because she's there, too and she's proven willing to stand up for herself). Tammy is not annoying, or spoiled, or motherly, or a love interest for any of the boys. She is a part of the team and brings something unique to it. She's talented and tough, and, like Connie and Julie, her femininity is neither lost to her nor emphasised. She's a Duck.
Tumblr media
"I wanna play. When am I gonna get my chance?" Julie 'The Cat' Gaffney is introduced to us in D2 as having "won the state championship for Maine, three years in a row" - single-handedly, I would assume, because it only takes her one hand to save the deciding goal against Gunnar Stahl and win Team USA the final game against Iceland. Nicknamed 'The Cat' or 'Cat Lady', for her quick reflexes in the goal, Julie is side-lined in D2 for almost the entire movie in favour of Goldberg. While it can be frustrating to watch this faster and (let's say it) superior player sit on the bench in favour of Goldberg, something important happens in the middle of the movie that brings depth to Julie's character - an admirable thing to do for a newbie in a sequel, let alone a female character. Julie goes to Bombay's office and demands to know when he's going to let her play. "I left my team in Maine to show the world what I can do," she says earnestly and justifiably, in an effort to convince Bombay to give her a shot. In this scene, Julie fights for her rights as a player on Team USA. She was scouted by Hendrix as being one of the best players in the country in their age bracket. It's only in anger about Goldberg's poor performance against Iceland that Bombay first lets her on to the ice - an opportunity she ruins by taking a dig at two of the opposing players before the game starts again. She could have easily stayed quiet, she was a new face in the Ducks-heavy team, but the writers gave Julie a chance to speak up for herself. As the second goalie, she is in a different position to all of the other new players - Kenny, Dwayne, Portman and Luis can all hop off and on the ice throughout a single game and get a chance to play, Julie has to wait for Goldberg to be out of the action. She knows she's talented, she's ambitious and she's frustrated that she isn't getting the opportunity to show that talent off. It's only by the end of the final game, in the shoot-out with Gunnar Stahl, that she finally gets to do that. It's only one goal, but it's one goal that wins Team USA the game. Is it frustrating that Julie is on the bench for most of the movie? Yes. Is it justified by her winning save at the end of the movie? Somewhat. I would argue, however, that it isn't the save that fortifies Julie's role in the movie as more than a "girl character", but her certainty of her own skills and her willingness to fight for her corner.
Tumblr media
"I'm no lady, I'm a Duck!" Unlike Tammy and Julie, Connie has no unique or specialised skill to bring to the table. She is simply a solid, consistent hockey player, like Averman, Guy or Jesse. A fact which is just as important as Tammy's figure-skating or Julie's goal-keeping abilities. It's just as important to have these filler roles (for lack of a better term) be played by an array of genders, races and sexualities, as it is to have them up front and shining. It normalises the idea of a young woman, a person of colour, or someone from the LGBT+ community being there, being a part of something and not being special. Connie Moreau is a reliable player, who works hard and gets as much ice time as anyone else on the team. After Bombay meets the District 5 team for the first time, Connie is the first person to approach him with any kind of friendliness, she introduces herself with a smile, and proves to the audience that while none of the team shows any promise yet, she knows enough about hockey to talk stats. Connie isn't here to tick a box, she's here because she likes ice hockey. It's important to mention Connie's relationship with fellow player, Guy Germaine, in the context of this topic. A romantic relationship doesn't automatically weaken a female character, it's when the woman is defined by her relationship to a man that a romantic sub-plot becomes an issue. Fortunately, this is not the case with Guy and Connie. The two have a cute but subtle little romance arc throughout the trilogy that never over-shadows either the main plot or either of their own personalities. Like Guy, Connie maintains her autonomy as a person and a character outside of her relationship, and their relationship never gets in the way of their performances as hockey players. The romance could be deemed unnecessary but in this case it is handled so deftly that it only ever acts as a cute background detail to the wider story, it's a positive embellishment that fleshes out the setting and the story, as arcs like that should be. "Oooh, the Connie-meister! The Velvet Hammer!" Throughout the franchise Connie comes across as an open, kind and supportive individual, which is smoothly juxtaposed with her willingness to fight anyone who tries to mess with her team. She proves again and again that she will stand up for herself and her team mates no matter what, against the Hawks, against Iceland and against the Varsity Warriors. It is also worth mentioning, that in the 2021 reboot, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, an adult Connie Moreau (excuse me, Senator Connie Moreau) is shown briefly showing two of the girls on the Don't Bothers team the best way to tackle a player that's bigger than you. Connie represents a wonderfully colourful character. She is caring and supportive (traditionally feminine qualities) and displays her affection for her team mates by standing up to opposing players, off and on the ice. Connie may not have a flashy skill like Julie or Tammy but it is her entirely realistic and relatable personality that makes her stand out.
Tumblr media
It might be difficult to hear this, but The Mighty Ducks movies aren't perfect. While they should be celebrated for their equal treatment of the main cast and the naturally gender-blind writing of all of the kids, there are a few instances that, while they don't diminish the good work done, shouldn't be ignored either. Interestingly, the majority of these shortcomings occur in D3 - notably, the only script in the trilogy not written by Ducks creator, Steve Brill.
D3 is often thought of as the best of the two sequels; D2 pulls a few fast ones on the audience in terms of internal hockey logic, while D3 holds up in that regard. While this can't be argued with I do think it falls short in some areas. D3 pulls back on the hockey content and focuses more on the kids, now teenagers and freshmen in a private school. It gives less time to the Ducks and more time to Charlie (their stand-in main character now that Bombay is out of the picture), and his battle with the new coach, new school and new team image. It's easy for something like female representation to get lost underneath everything else that's going on in the movie, but when you're looking for it there's something to see - and it's not great. Connie and Julie are largely left unscathed by the plot. Julie gets a very light romantic sub-plot with Scooter, the Varsity goalie, but I would argue that so little happens between them that, like the Connie and Guy romance, it doesn't detract from Julie's character but adds a bit of fun to the overall setting. She initially ignores his attempts at conversation after their first game, and when he approaches her at the end of the movie, she looks surprised but pleased and the scene is so brief it doesn't diminish either of their characters or the ending.
D3 does, however, introduce us to Linda, a student at Eden Hall who catches Charlie's attention. And… that's it. I like Linda, but she is the opposite of what Julie, Connie and Tammy represented in the first two movies. Linda is introduced in D3 asking Charlie to sign a petition that will change the name of the school's offensive 'Warriors' moniker. When she realises that Charlie is a jock she turns away, but Charlie doesn't back off. Later on, they interact again and he manages to wear her down; she attends a hockey game and despite Charlie's behaviour during that game, begins to fall for him. After the Varsity game, Linda approaches Charlie and they kiss, after she thanks him for having the "demeaning Warriors name" replaced by a new Eden Hall version of the Ducks logo, which…Charlie had nothing to do with? Linda is a textbook "girl character". She is completely innoffensive, appears initially as a foil to the sports-loving Charlie, but in a single scene is charmed by his wiles(?) and tries better to understand him. She never interacts with another Duck, other than being present at the hearing, then appears again at the end of the movie, completely won over by him, without Charlie having done anything other than talk to her on a bench.
Tumblr media
A similar character appears in D2, Maria, Team Iceland's trainer (the "Iceland is nice" lady). Maria's presence is brief in the movie, much shorter than Linda's, yet she only really appears as a passing love interest for Bombay, but not really for Bombay. His interest and their date seem to happen only so that Gordon can be caught by Portman and Fulton, and to supply another reason for the kids to lose their faith in him. After this, Maria is largely left to stand in the background with the rest of Team Iceland, without anymore play in the story. Compared to the other adult woman in D2, Michelle McKay, Maria's role is clearly there to serve a purpose relating to her gender. I would argue, however, that in this instance Maria is less a victim of the male gaze as she is a victim of narrative convention.
Tumblr media
Outside of the main cast, there are two more women that share significant screentime with the Ducks, and both represent the negative and the positive aspects of the Ducks scripts when it comes to writing women. First there is Casey Conway, Charlie's mother and Bombay's love interest in D1. Casey disappears in D2 with a throwaway line about her marrying some random guy, and so she is no longer Bombay's love interest or present in the movie. As well as that, the kids are away from home at the Goodwill Games and so Charlie doesn't need his mother for now. Casey returns again in D3 to act as the adult influence in Charlie's life while Gordon is absent. Like Linda, there is nothing inherently wrong with Casey, but she is only present for her relationships to the men in her life - Charlie mostly, Gordon briefly. If she was meant to be the grown up voice in Charlie's head during D3, then why have Charlie ignore her advice and admonishments and why bring Bombay back to give him the speech that changes his mind?
Tumblr media
"CHANGE IT UP!" In D2 we have Michelle McKay, who is brought to the Goodwill Games as the team's teacher. She is a foil for Gordon during his Air Bombay phase, but is otherwise her own character. I would argue that she is more defined by her role as a teacher (with no interest in the Goodwill Games) and her relationship with the kids than she is by her interactions with Gordon. Ms. McKay listens to the kids, develops a relationship with them and confronts Gordon when they can't. She is soft-spoken and doesn't seem to be interested in sports, although she does enjoy her brief stint as Coach. She is supportive when Gordon is neglectful. And while she does act as a foil for him for a lot of the movie, once he is back to normal again, she retains her personality. Bombay kisses her on the cheek in thanks for jumping in as coach, but nothing romantic comes of this. Their relationship is entirely platonic and no one will ever convince me otherwise. Like Tammy, Connie and Julie, Michelle retains her femininity (through her traditionally feminine traits as well as her physical appearance, dress and mannerisms) without becoming defined by it. Her personality survives intact to the end of the movie; she is there for the kids and isn't won over by Gordon or the sport.
Tumblr media
I'm sure that female representation was the least of everyone's concern when The Mighty Ducks reboot, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, was announced, but it's clear that the good work done in the trilogy is being carried on here. While we haven't gotten to know these girls as well as their predecessors, Sofi, Lauren and Maya continue to represent a diverse range of personalities and talent levels, while holding their own narratives on the screen. As well as this, what Game Changers does differently - and which is representative of the eras both products were made in - is show girls playing on the rival teams. While the girls of the trilogy were wonderfully fleshed out characters, they were also the only girls. No other team in the franchise had a girl playing on it - something I've always thought was meant to reaffirm the Ducks as being the good guys and everyone else as the bad guys. In Game Changers, none of these girls ever speak, but neither do the boys - in The Mighty Ducks no one on a rival team ever speaks unless they are on the rival team. Like Connie had to do on her own thirty years ago, the addition of female players, simply in the background, normalises the idea of young women appearing in sports-oriented media (and movies in general), without making a big to-do or having to justify their place in the world.
The Mighty Ducks franchise is not without its problems when it comes to female representation but these movies deserve to be noted for their treatment of their female characters. In the few moments where they are singled out for their gender, those moments, and the characters involved, do not go unpunished. Early in D2 Portman refers to Julie condescendingly as "babe" and is immediately called out by Adam then, most notably, his future Bash Brother Fulton; during the first USA-Iceland game, Gunnar and another skater laugh at USA for sending Julie into the goal, for which she knocks them over and is disqualified for the rest of the game. These scenes are not meant for laughs, each one highlights the perpetrator as being in the wrong. Portman's behaviour causes a fight between the team and the instance during the Iceland game only reaffirms to the audience that these are the bad guys. The Mighty Ducks does not take its female characters for granted, none of them are there to tick the token girl box. The fact that there are only two on the team at a time may even be representative of the interest levels in girls' youth hockey at the time (this I can't say for sure as I wasn't alive when these movies were being released). There's a quick scene in D2, around twenty-nine minutes, that follows Connie as she skates circles around the Trinidad and Tobago players then passes the puck to Kenny, resulting in a score. During those few seconds of Connie handling the puck the camera cuts briefly to a girl in the stand cheering her on. If D1, D2 and D3 are representative of the time they were made in then I hope that Game Changers is also indicitave of the growth and current levels of interest and access for young girls in hockey. I'd also be interested to know how much The Mighty Ducks had an impact on that growth.

Again, loving up some underloved fandoms here on Ciaossu-Imagines, so throwing out some headcanons I have about The Mighty Ducks characters! I hope anyone familiar with these movies will enjoy them!
Starting with Averman, he’s definitely Jewish. I think he and Goldberg are really good friends because both of them are Jewish. They attended Hebrew school together, their parents are good friends, and honestly they really rely on each other around the holiday season. Neither boy is ashamed of being Jewish or anything, but especially around the time period those movies are set, Hannukah was not as popular or as talked about as Christmas was. And when all your friends are talking about Christmas and their plans and the gifts they’ll get and all the celebrations you hear about are Christianity based, it’s hard not to feel a little left out so both boys’ kind of really like having another friend they can talk to about their Hannukah plans who will get it. Bonus headcanon but I think Averman has a bigger love of hockey and was the one to get Goldberg into the sport.
Hot take on Adam – I don’t think he’s this abused kid trying desperately to please Daddy. I think that while his father might have high expectations for Adam, his father isn’t really abusive. I think a lot of the pressure that Adam feels – and boy, does he feel a lot – is pressure that Adam puts on himself. I do see Adam as having some issues with perfectionism, with being way too hard on himself, and he struggles with anxiety and a need to be perfect but it’s because Adam himself knows that he’s got a lot of talent and he doesn’t want to waste that talent.
Charlie’s actually got a few hidden skills but the one that ends up surprising most people is that, at one point in his life, Charlie got really into magic and he’s pretty good with a couple of tricks, mostly sleight of hand stuff.
Tammy did enjoy playing hockey, I won’t pretend that she didn’t. But I think when it came down to it, she enjoyed figure skating a lot more. There was more pageantry in that sport, more creativity and more glamour in her mind and I think she left the Ducks before the second movie because she really did want to focus on figure skating and competing in that area. She did win several medals, but I think she largely left the sport around the time she started college.
Julie reads…for fun. While she loves being active and has various hobbies and interests, she’s been a life-long bookworm. She learned to read early, and gobbles books up. She normally gets through at least a book a week and does read a wide variety of things, though she has guilty pleasure reading that she’d be embarrassed if anyone found out about, such as romance novels and the Hardy Boys books.
Guy hates carrying change around with him. There’s just something about the weight of it and the clinking sound it makes in his pocket as he walks that drives him insane. He prefers to carry bills for cash and usually lets the salespeople keep his change wherever he goes.
Surprising thing about Goldberg…the boy is not only gifted with a green thumb, but he genuinely likes taking care of his plants. He only got them because his parents wouldn’t let him get a pet…they didn’t think he was responsible enough for a pet so they bought him a rather high-maintenance houseplant to take care of first so that he could prove that he could be responsible for another living thing. Turns out that he enjoyed caring for the plant so much, even giving it a name, that he ended up wanting more plants instead of an actual pet.
Jesse has a tendency to argue just for the sake of arguing. He legitimately enjoys arguments and I have this headcanon that he found the debate club during high school and it’s the most at home he’s felt since playing with the Ducks. Like, those are his people, that’s where he belongs. He gets really involved with debate throughout his high school career and I think he wants to go to law school after graduating.
Terry Hall…still hasn’t gotten the grasp of gum honestly. Not saying the kid is stupid, because he certainly isn’t. It’s just that he cannot, for the life of him, remember that gum is for consistent chewing, not eating, especially if the gum in question is a really fruity, sweet flavour.
I really do think that Karp is someone who is really easy to take advantage of. He gets bullied a lot as a kid and he’s someone who just naturally is the kind of person who really wants to make others happy and to have others like him. He’s a very generous friend but the fact that he’s willing to do almost anything to have his ‘friends’ like him means that he gets put into some pretty brutal situations and gets used throughout his childhood and teen years.
I think Peter’s an army brat, or something along those lines. Something tells me that this kid is someone who moves around a lot throughout his life because of his parent’s careers. He’s used to never staying anywhere really long enough to form completely solid relationships. He’s used to always being the new kid and needing to impress and be tough enough to both make friends and avoid bullies. I also think that while he really would like to settle down in one spot long enough to make serious friendships, the idea of doing so kind of scares him.
Luis taught himself how to juggle when he was a kid. He’s also really skilled at hackeysack.
Connie has the habit of pacing around when she’s deep in thought. There’s just something about moving that helps her think better and if she really has something on her mind, she tends to go running or jogging. The tougher the problem is, the faster and further she tends to go as she loses track of where she is or how far she’s gone.
Dean can burp the alphabet. Forwards and backwards. He’s really quite proud of this.
Fulton’s worst habit? He’s really bad at sitting and staying still for long periods of time and he starts fidgeting when he has to do so. He’ll stretch, move around in his seat a bit, crack his knuckles, but the worst is his leg because he’s definitely one of those guys who bounces his leg when he’s bored or restless, almost aggressively so.
Dwayne really likes to sing. He’s not horrible at it by any means, though a little tone-deaf. He’s a huge fan, because of how he was raised, of any older country, with Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Conway Twitty being favourites of his.
Russ has the tendency to get cold really easily. It can come out of nowhere too, with no real reason for him to have a chill or to be cold. He just is. He tends to always carry an extra layer with him as a just in case.
Ken has weird eating habits. He has to eat all of one thing before he can allow himself to eat the next thing on his plate. For example, if he has fries and a burger, he’ll have to eat all the burger before he’ll start eating the fries. He can’t bring himself to mix and match his food and not even he knows why.

Total Drama December
Day 3: Least Favorite characters from each season
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why I don't like them >:( :
Courtney: Bossy, toxic, complaining, whiny, drama queen Beth: All the time with the boyfriend thing, a lot of screen time, the script on her side Sierra: Super stalker
Zoey: All the script on her side and also Mary Sue Duncan: Super mean and annoying with Harold, he didn't have the balls to break up with Courtney but he did have to kiss Gwen, and all the drama of being good at AS Mal: I don't like it very much but it's the mystical type of "bad just because and I have the script on my side"
Sugar: Owen but very bad and worse Amy: Do I have to explain about Samey? Leonard and Tammy: the definition of "pendejo no dura nada"(asshole doesn't last long), they don't contribute and they're annoying
Chase: Selfish, don't apologize to Emma for what happened and the end of their relationship

So, with the fandoms not requested for the AU event, I kind of divided the AU’s and the fandoms as I wanted to. And since I thought it would be kind of fun to kind of sort characters in a different way from a fandom I really love (and have recently rewatched all the movies of), I decided to write a Percy Jackson AU with The Mighty Ducks characters, just sort of figuring out which cabin and which God/dess they’d have as their parent!
Starting off with the obvious place to start, Cabin One. That cabin has only one occupant, the sole child of Zeus at Camp Half-Blood. That child is Charlie Conway because honestly, I do believe that’s the one that best fits Charlie. Children of Zeus are known to be natural leaders with strength and bravery, though they tend to attract a lot of monsters. We see, all throughout the three movies, that Charlie really is not only a natural leader, but a really solid leader that can manage, at the best of times, to truly inspire those around him but even at the worst of times, can still make people pay attention to what he’s saying. He’s also shown bravery several times through the movies, even though he does get targeted for a lot of crap and general growing pains, much like children of Zeus are magnets for trouble (like monsters).
We’ll skip right over Cabin Two, since Hera had no mortal children, and move onto Cabin Three, Poseidon’s cabin. Much like Zeus’s cabin, there’s only one occupant in Poseidon’s cabin, Ken Wu. Ken as a son of Poseidon makes sense to me, with the children of that God really being known for cleverness and battle skills, like Percy in the books or Theseus in the myths. And I feel like there’s quite a few hints throughout the movies that Ken is actually quite good at strategizing, at figuring out plays and moves that will work so translating that over, I feel it fully fits cleverness. While he’s small and was scared at first, Ken also was shown to not only learn how to throw down but to embrace those chances to fight, fulfilling the other big quality for Poseidon’s children.
We’re going to skip Cabin Four, since Demeter doesn’t have a child among this lot, and move right onto Cabin Five, Are’s cabin. There are two sons of Ares in this cabin. First off is the obvious one, Dean Portman. Portman’s shown right from the start in D2 as brash and kind of a goon. He likes fighting, he kind of gets a kick out of people finding him scary. He’s shown to be incredibly brave and protective of those he cares about, but prone to violence and anger. The second son of Ares, despite his small size compared to his other siblings, is Peter Mark. Much like Portman, Peter’s brash, rough and tumble. He’s harsh, with a big attitude and a short fuse. Again, much like Portman, Peter’s not afraid to speak up or to do what needs to be done, showing a sense of bravery characteristic of all of Are’s children, but out of the two of them, Peter is the one who is prouder of his reputation for anger and violence and the one more likely to pick fights just because he can.
Moving right along to Cabin Six, Athena’s cabin. There are two children of Athena in the cabin, both very different people…but both share the characteristic’s of Athena’s children – very intelligent, eager for knowledge, great planners who give solid advice and who aren’t above using tricks to get what they want. The first one is pretty easy to guess. It’s shown in the movies quite clearly that out of all the Ducks, Julie Gaffney is very serious about her studies. She genuinely wants to learn and takes grades and academics seriously. She’s quick-witted and book smart, with a cool head on her shoulders. However, like all other children of Athena, she’s also not afraid to ‘go to battle’ and will fight, physically and mentally, for whatever causes she believes are just. The second child of Athena is one that I don’t think many would assume would be put in this cabin – Russ Tyler. Much like Julie, Russ is an extremely intelligent fellow. He was shown in D2 to have street smarts and a cool head, a quick wit, and an ability to plan for what he wants. In D3, it’s shown that on top of that, Russ actually does care a lot about his academics, that he’s serious about learning and getting every advantage he can get. It’s also shown in that movie that he’s really good at giving solid, dependable advice, as he’s actually really clever and observant and is good at figuring out solutions or advising as to the best course of action.
We’ll skip Cabin Seven and Eight, as there are no children of Apollo among this group and Artemis is an eternal maiden. So, the next cabin we focus on is Cabin Nine, Hephaestus’ Cabin. Children of Hephaestus are great craftsmen, strong individuals who can be a little gruff and intimidating, but are strong, well liked and respectable. There are two children of Hephaestus in this cabin. I’m starting off with the slightly unexpected. I firmly do believe that Connie is a daughter of Hephaestus. I have it pretty firmly in my head that Connie is someone who loves hands-on work. She wants to get dirty; she wants to work with her hands and build and create. She loves crafting, yeah, but she’s also someone who would totally be up for helping with renovations on a house, for example. She’s shown throughout the movies to actually be really strong, to the point where Averman calls her the Velvet Hammer. However, she’s also very friendly and charming, and seems to be well-liked by almost everyone who meets her. The other camper is Fulton Reed. Big, solid, and strong, Fulton embodies everything that a son of Hephaestus should be. I also have always headcanoned him as being really good with his hands. Book learning has never really been up his alley, but he’s surprisingly creative and a quick learner when it comes to working with his hands and various tools. The weapons he makes are highly sought after in the camp and he’s notorious for being unbeatable in Capture the Flag if he’s wielding one of his own weapons. But on top of just that strength and creativity, Fulton’s been shown to be a really generous, respectable guy, right from the very first movie. While he might resort to violence a little too easily, he’s always the first to stick up for the little guy, to put his neck on the line for them. Protective and genuinely good-hearted, I think that, like Julie, Fulton’s kind of someone that other people just like and look up to a little.
We’re onto Cabin Ten, Aphrodite’s cabin. Surprisingly, it’s not that full, with only two campers. Tammy Duncan is, to me, most definitely a daughter of Aphrodite. She’s a huge girly girl, someone who loves make-up, skincare, beauty routines, all things feminine and cutesy. She lives for silly gossip and drama, as well as talk about romance and who likes who. However, while her pretty face and love for all those things would lead most to just dismiss her as a shallow, vapid girl, Tammy’s a lot more than just a pretty face. She’s not afraid to break a nail punching someone who angers her; she’s also got surprisingly hidden depths as the Camp’s best chariot racer. The other camper, Luis Mendoza, is a son of Aphrodite with all that that brings. People who meet Luis find it hard not to comment on what a good-looking boy he is, but he’s a good-looking boy who comes across a little bit…vapid. Like there’s not a lot going on up there. Don’t be fooled though – while he’s charming and more than a little bit of a Casanova (what can he say…he’s truly in love with love itself, as befitting his parentage), Luis has a lot more going on in that head than he lets on. An extremely observant person, he’s quick to learn other people, to figure out what makes them tick, what makes them happy, what buttons to push to get them to give him his way. However, he doesn’t often use that talent of his for anything negative, honestly. While he can be a little manipulative, there’s really not a bad or mean-hearted bone in this boy’s body.
Cabin Eleven is, as always, the fullest. The cabin is always busy, and its residents normally are too, being adventurous, clever, fun-loving, just a little hectic, and delighting in pranks and general merriment. Lester Averman is definitely the most well-known of Hermes children and he’s the Counselor of the cabin. While Averman might not be the most handsome, the strongest, the bravest, or the most talented, he is extremely clever. Quick-witted and very sociable, Averman is oddly charming and impossible to dislike. His mischievous nature and wise-cracking mouth can get him into some trouble at times, but he can almost always talk himself out of it, getting the other guy laughing along with him instead of beating him up. I also see Tommy Duncan as one of those rare cases where siblings don’t necessarily share the same godly parent, as I would put Tommy, whose main priority is having fun and keeping people happy, as a child of Hermes. Lastly, there’s Dwayne Robertson. Quirky and charming, with a ready smile and laugh, Dwayne can charm the pants off of you. And he’s got quick, agile hands…hands that are normally full of stuff that he really shouldn’t have been able to get ahold of. His natural ability as a thief is rarely ever put to serious use though as, while a little bit of a showboat and a little gregarious, Dwayne actually has a strong moral compass and very defined ideas of right and wrong.
I do think that, while the only occupant of Cabin Twelve, there’s no other place for Goldberg. This boy is undeniably a son of Dionysus. Like his father, Goldberg’s actually really good with plants…and even more to the point, I really do feel that no matter his age, with his sociable nature and fun-loving attitude, Goldberg has a tendency to be a bit of a party animal. An extrovert to the extreme, he needs those large gatherings, he needs those get-togethers, he needs the excess and the fun and the high of being the center of attention, of being the ‘good time guy’.
Next up is Nemesis’ cabin, Cabin Sixteen. In a weird twist on how mortals and Gods normally end up dating, Nemesis actually stayed with the mortal long enough to have two of his children, about a year apart. Both Jesse and Terry Hall are children of Nemesis. They both have chips on their shoulders, and are both quick to remember any insults, real or imagined. They have tough attitudes and have no problem getting revenge, but at the same time, they have very strict ideas about right and wrong, and they aren’t actively bad people. They believe in balance and think that it’s not okay for anyone, even themselves, to get a big head. If people do, of course they should bring that person’s ego back down to the correct side. That being said – Terry and Jesse? Excellent guys to have on your side because, while their caustic words may sting sometimes, they are actually really loyal to those they care about and make the best allies.
Moving to another cabin with only one camper in it. Cabin Seventeen, Nike’s cabin, is occupied solely by Adam Banks. Nike is the Goddess of victory and victory is always what Adam is after. Like most of Nike’s children, Adam has a real competitive streak to him. If he’s going to play, he wants to play to win, he wants to give it his all against opponents who are also giving it their all and he wants to come out on top. Losing is not something he handles easily, and he’ll often push himself to rather extreme limits. Adam has the drive, the determination, and is so willing to put in the hard work but sometimes he forgets that it’s okay to relax as well.

What are you thoughts on the girls in the movies? I don't mean just the girl ducks, I mean all the female characters?
All of the female characters ?
This is gonna be interesting 😂
For the girls at Eden Hall I don’t really have much to say. We didn’t see too much of the cheerleaders so I don’t have many thoughts about them other than I think they were just added in for that “popular highschool girls” cliche
and since the one main scene of theirs was being mean to Linda, I’m just gonna assume that’s how most of them are 🤷 entitled rich girls
As for Linda herself, I thought she was an absolute cutie. I actually liked her character a lot. If Charlie had to have any love interest at all, i’m glad it was her. She seemed to be a well grounded and an independent person, as well as able to handle her own. I also think it was sweet that she was at the meeting that decided whether the Ducks lost their scholarships or not. At that point she didn’t even know Charlie or anyone that well, so I think it was really nice of her to be there in support of them. Also, going to the Ducks hockey games i thought was nice of her. Even if she was hesitant at first, can you really blame her? All the jocks at Eden Hall so far had just been entitled, rich bullies 🤷
As for the adults,
I’m kinda iffy abt Ms. Mckay. (Mainly because in the original D2 script she completely crushed Adams dreams unwarranted. I mean srsly?? how do you do that so casually to a 12-13 year old?? 😅) But other than that i don’t have much thoughts abt her. She was there when the Ducks needed her, that’s all I pretty much have to say 🤷
Now, Casey Conway I absolutely adore. It’s so clear she loves Charlie so much and is willing to do a lot for him. I think she’s just such a kind soul and even though she has very little screentime you can clearly see that. She loves her son and is a hardworking, single mother whose kind and loving and comforting. What’s not to love?
Lastly, the girl Ducks.
I love them all so much. I will defend them all till the day I die. Julie, Connie, and Tammy will forever hold such a special place in my heart. I think they’re such good female representation and are such strong characters all while still holding such good femininity that it’s hard not too admire them. All of them were such ahead of their times. I srsly admire them all so much, as cheesy as that may sound. Theyre forever my girls I love them so much 😭
So yea i’m not too sure if i’m missing anybody, but I think that’s it. Hope this answered your question anon 🫶
