New Fic Alert!
The New Guy and the New Girl
Jimmy Keene x (adult) Reader
No real warnings apply. It’s just some cute fluff. Bit of romance, no sex
Summary: Y/N just started working at the prison as a dentist. You never would’ve thought you’d end up here, but here you are. You’re a bit nervous about this new job, but then you meet someone who seems to make it all better.
**
You didn’t ask for this job. You didn’t ask for metal detectors, or the occasional drug test, or all the badges, or the constant surveillance.
But you did ask for something, and you asked the wrong person.
You left dental college about six months ago with one, simply request: to get a job as a dentist as quickly as possible. As your mother reminds you, again, and again, you’re not getting any younger. “Yes, mom”, you’d say in your head after each undesired reminder, “I went to school a little late.” Four years to be exact, but only because you got a little sidetracked by a guy and Europe and Italian cheeses. But after the divorce papers were signed, you found your way back to reality.
And once you finally reached the end of school, you could finally scoop up a bit of that American Dream your grandma always talked about. So you applied for jobs. You thought it’d be easy to get a job as a dentist. You don’t know where that notion came from, but it came and stuck with you, until it was forced after you after the eighteenth rejection email.
But finally, after a couple of months of searching, you got an interview. The brief convo with the hiring manager was, as you expected, pleasant. In the pre-interview, you were, as you’d always intended to be, confident, cool, unwavered. The interviewer was impressed by this ‘unwavering’ quality, as they noted. This also didn’t surprise you. What did surprise you was the location of the interview: The Outer Depths Prison, about 28 miles south of Chicago.
Somehow, you never saw yourself ending up in a prison, and yet, you found yourself interviewing at one. You went through the usual checks, background checks, fingerprinting, all pretty routine, but they also had to strip search you–that was quite unusual. Though, the CO was quite cute, so you didn’t mind as much.
The interview, despite being a little shaken up by the strip search, went well. Once again, the interviewer admired your confidence and unshakability. A week later, you showed up for your first day.
Your first patient was a fairly young guy, about your age. He had dark hair, brushed back, though not totally tamable. For some reason, he always had a few pieces that stuck up or fell in his eyes. As a result, he was always playing with it. He could never quite leave it alone.
As soon as you saw him, you asked yourself how he got in here. He wasn’t like the other inmates–not that you would know. You’d never met them. But you’d seen prisoners on TV, so you knew the type. This patient was the type. Sure, he had the right build for it. His shoulders were broad, his arms were like two thick tree branches. You had never seen his chest, but you imagine he had abs to match those shoulders. Despite the football player build, there was a certain softness there too. You sensed it before he even spoke. His hazel eyes were the dead giveaway. They weren’t hardened, like the COs you’d met, or the couple of prisoners you’d seen in the distance upon arrival. Not him. There was something vulnerable right behind his eyes.
You knew he wasn’t like the others the first time he spoke.
“Hello,” he had said in a gentle voice, “I’m Jimmy.”
“Dr. Y/N, at your service.”
“The guard said to take it easy on you. He said you were new.” Something shifted then, in his voice and in his eyes. There was a certain confidence there. Was it cockiness, or was it charm? You couldn’t tell, but you wanted to keep listening to find out.
“I am new, but I have worked on patients before, just in a different setting,” You replied. You didn’t tell him that you’d only worked in dental school and not in the real world.
“S’alright,” he continued, smirking, “I’m new too.” There was something in the way he looked at you. He was still that confident jock that he had eased into, but that softness in his eyes was creeping back in. the two sides of him, soft, gentle soul and cocky jock were sort of melting together. And you wanted to keep listening.
“When did you arrive?” You asked him. You weren’t sure if you were supposed to ask that. In fact, you didn’t know what was taboo and what was fair game.
“Last week,” he answered. The confidence melted away, and you could see the weight that was bearing on him. You briefly wondered what he left behind, a home, maybe a job, possibly a family. “It’s only been about eight days, and with about 700 more to go, it feels like time has totally stopped. I’d like it to move quicker.”
“It will,” you told him. “I went into dental school late, like really late. So when I saw that it’d take four years, I just felt this dread pass over me. I was really going to have to spend another four years in school, another four years not working, living with my parents, and not really moving forward. Okay, bad example, dental school is nothing like prison.”
“You were in purgatory,” he noted, in a surprisingly non-judgemental way, “I can see what you meant.”
“Well, in that case, I can assure that your sentence will eventually end. The 700 days will come to an end, and you’ll move forward.”
“Like you’re doing,” he noted.
“Like I’m doing,” you echoed.
There was a slight pause, as you both seemed to forget why you were here. And then you remembered: dentistry!
“Sorry, sir, you had a toothache.”
“Uh, yeah, it’s over here…”
It turned out, his tooth was perfectly healthy. He just had some untreated gingivitis, and the inflammation was causing him some pain. He had remained somewhat calm and collected while you checked him over, but in the moments before you announced his diagnosis, you could see how tense he got. So, you happily announced that there was basically nothing wrong, and he’d just need a regular cleaning to sort him out.
During his cleaning, the two of you continued to chat. You quickly learned that Jimmy was a big baseball fan, but he wasn’t a Cubs fan. Perhaps revealing a bit too much (which you could tell by the way he blushed) he admitted he didn’t like the Cubs out of slight rebellion. His father was a die-hard Cubs fan, so he grew to love the Red Sox, even though he’s only been to Boston once. You told him that you used to be a Cubs fan, but decided to back the Yankees since you wanted to support a winning team.
After swapping some baseball stats, and fighting over a recent game, your conversation eased into one about TV. Jimmy revealed that he missed TV.
“Don’t you guys have a TV room,” you’d remarked.
“Yes, but I’ve never gotten control of the remote. I always end up watching the news, Letterman, or TV Land, and that doesn’t interest me much.”
You ask him about his favorite shows, and he tells you all about his favorite cop shows, like Miami Vice and Hawaii Five O. the irony doesn’t pass him by.
After pulling away to let him speak, he said. “Not sure if I can watch those shows anymore, now that I know what it’s like to be in the back of a police car.”
You had so many questions for him. You wanted to know what he was in for. It’s minimum security prison (or minimum for short, you learned), so nothing too terrible. Just something illegal and bad enough to get him two years. You also wanted to know why he did whatever it is he did, and what kind of life he led before prison. But you were just his dentist, not his psychologist or his girlfriend, so you didn’t ask.
You just asked him something you’d always wanted to know. “I now know what it’s like to be inside a prison, but I don’t know what it’s like inside a police car.”
“Shitty,” he answered, as he tried to stew together something more eloquent. Swallowing hard, he continued, “I had to just stew in the knowledge that I had ruined my own life.” he laid back down and opened his mouth. “Sorry, you were in the middle of something, and I’ve been babbling on.”
“No, it’s okay,” I answered. “A little insight into what it’s like in here wouldn’t hurt.”
“I can tell you what it’s like. Hell. just hell. Like, when I say that, I don’t mean in the colloquial sense, just like, hey it’s hell in there. I mean it as a pretty apt metaphor here. It is hell; we’re trapped here, like demons in hell. We’re given shitty food, which I imagine is the case in hell. It’s hot as hell because the air condition has been broken all summer. And you have to constantly worry about pissing off the wrong person, or else your ass is getting beat.”
He then looked up at me with those vulnerable eyes of his. Once again, he seemed to think he’d said too much.
“You asked,” he added cheekily.
“I’m glad I did,” you answered, swallowing hard. “I think I need to know how people in here think; otherwise, I won’t be able to talk to them, to reach them. I’ll just be an outsider to them.”
“You are an outsider,” he remarked, “But in a good way. You don’t want to fit in here. Trust me.”
“I don’t think you do, either.” You surprised yourself with that comment. “I don’t think you’re one of them.”
“I am one of them,” he insists.
“Okay, fine,” you relent, because you weren’t about to argue with a stranger about things you didn’t fully understand yet. “We aren’t that alike. But we are alike in one way: we’re both trying to get our footing here.”
He nodded then. “I think we’ll find it. I’ve certainly gotten more used to this place. Perhaps you can as well.”
“Perhaps I can.”
“Now,” he continues abruptly, “Shouldn’t you finish cleaning my teeth?”
“Right!”
Eventually, the appointment comes to end once you finish cleaning his teeth. He gives you a smile, a much brighter one, and tells you, “You’re doing awesome. So don’t let this place intimidate you, alright? You’ve got this.”
“So do you.”
None of your other patients could really measure up to Jimmy. Some were nice, some were mean, some were shockingly cowardly (going as far as to cower in the corner), and some were tough enough to withstand the worst novocain shots. But none of them were like Jimmy. Very few were as open to chatting with you as he did. Most of them had real dental problems, so you couldn’t waste time chatting away while you had to drill and fill and extract. And when they did talk, it was always light fodder. Small talk. You’d discuss the lunch menu, the status of the air conditioning, the itchiness of the sheets, and how people were spending their commissary money. But nothing thought-provoking or particularly memorable. These were conversations you’d forget about in a week. But it’d been weeks and you hadn’t forgotten your conversation with Jimmy.
Then, without much of a warning, Jimmy returned. He just appeared in your office doorway one day.
“Do you mind having a look at something?” He asked you. You nodded and invited him inside.
“How have you been?” You asked him. “Have you adjusted okay?” He rocked his head back and forth, and you knew what that meant; he hadn’t adjusted, at least not much.
“I can’t really sleep,” he noted, scratching the back of his neck. “And I think I’ve been grinding my teeth, which sucks because I’ve really looked after my teeth. Two months in here, and I’m fucking them up.”
“Okay, let me have a look.”
He nodded, taking a seat in the chair. You took a seat at his side. He was laying down, and you were hovering over him. Your eyes met his, and you thought, for a second, you might melt. He then popped open his mouth, and you remembered that you had to do your job.
After poking around his mouth for a bit, he asked you, his voice muffled, “How have you been? I meant to ask earlier, but we jumped into this a little fast.” You pulled the tools out so you could have your convo. You couldn’t help but get butterflies as you geared up to talk to him.
“Alright,” you answered, “I’ve finally gotten my own apartment. It’s in the eastern part of Chicago.”
“Nice, I used to live in the Northeast…”
You begin swapping stories about the city, exchanging your favorite pizza joints and Greek restaurants. You quickly discover that he's Italian and a bit of a connoisseur of the local Italian restaurant scene. You tell him about the handful of good Iranian food spots in the area.
“I have to admit,” he replied sheepishly, “I haven’t had it.”
“Most people haven’t,” you replied flatly. “But I can make some recommendations–for when you get out.”
“In one year and ten months,” he noted.
“One year and ten months,” you affirmed, “See, that’s already much shorter than when we met. And does that feel like it was so long ago?”
He raised one apprehensive eyebrow. “Kinda, yeah,” he replied. “Does it feel that way too?”
“I’m not counting the days,” you answered.
“Really?” He sounded surprised, which puzzled you. “You’re not counting the days until you can get a different job, maybe one without a barbed wire fence.”
“I’ve thought about it, but I don’t know if and when that’ll happen. I’ve spent years of my life reaching towards some far off goal. It’d be nice if I could just stand still, for a bit, you know, just enjoy what I have now.”
“Yeah, but I don’t think this is the place to do it.”
“It isn’t so bad on my end. Once I’m in here, and the doors are shot, and the CO goes outside the door, I feel like I’m in a regular dentistry. And once the patients come, and I start working, it all just feels like dentistry to me. Really, you don’t have to worry about me.”
He looked at you, really looked at you. You had to know what he was thinking. What did he want to know about you?
“I’ll try not to worry about you,” he sighed.
“You worry about me?”
“Course,” he answered with a coy smile. “The loonies that walk through that door. I think about you all the time, asking myself how you’re managing in this place.” “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking the same thing.”
He gazes at you. You recognized that gaze. Men have looked at you before. In particular, a man you divorced.
“So,” you start searching around for your tools, your eyes darting all around your tray. At last, you pick one up. “You wanted to know if you were grinding your teeth.”
“Oh, that,” he said flatly. You catch something in his voice, something off.
“Yeah, you said you were grinding your teeth. Right?”
“Can I be honest with you?” He said in a soft voice.
“Of course,” you answered, dropping your gaze. “What do you need?”
“I’m not grinding my teeth. At least, I don’t think I am. I only said that because,” he paused and sighed. “Oh god this sounds so middle school.”
“What?” You said teasingly. Perhaps you were back in middle school.
Smirking, he explained, “I lied about my teeth because I wanted to see you.”
You looked up at him with a wide, doe-eyed expression. You tried to shake it off, but you couldn’t stop staring.
“You wanted to hang out with me?”
He smiled and nodded. “I just wanted to see how you were doing.”
“Well, I’m glad you stopped by because I have been wondering how you were holding up.”
“You know,” he added coyly, “What if I were to need some more dentistry done.”
“Like what? Your teeth are remarkably perfect.”
He shrugged. “It doesn’t matter, because it’s not real. It’s just an appointment slot that you’ll leave open for me.”
“How often?”
“Mmm, I don’t know. Once a week?”
That made you smile a big goofy smile. “Once a week, you and I can just come in, chat for a bit, and I’ll send you on your way.”
He nodded, “Yeah, just some chatting.”
But as soon as he said that, you knew it wasn’t true. You knew what you were slipping into, but you did nothing to get your footing. You just said, “I want to see you again, and again, and again, and again.”
And that cocky confidence punched its way through the softness, “Likewise.”
And you melted right then and there, like puddy in the hot sun.

Dude, duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! Does anyone even remember me? Sorry for the very long hiatus, but I’m dipping my toes back into fanfic writing. Hopefully I’m not too rusty. What better way to come back with trying out an original story, that’s right this bad boy is coming from my head.
You can all thank @justsomerandomfanfic for waking me up. Seriously, thank you so much for liking my writing. It means the world (I thought my writing was pretty bad not gonna lie haha) but I am so glad I can make someone’s day with it! Apologies in advance. Please let me know if I should add any specific warnings! Hearts, reblogs, and comments are lovely!
I am going to try and attempt a GN reader x Eggsy (please let me know if I need to fix anything)
Tumblr media
Eggsy x GN Reader
Word Count: A little over 1k
Warnings: Implied fighting and not so great friends (it’s not too bad tho)
It was supposed to be just a chill night out with some friends at a rather less crowded bar. Yeah it was anything but that. Once the words “Manners, maketh, man.” were thrown into the mix and all bets were off the table. Various objects like tables, chairs, and umbrellas went flying as their eyes scanned to find various things.
1. Find a safe exit (The front doors had been barricaded shut, but there’s got to be an emergency exit somewhere in this dump).
2. Stick with the people you know.
3. Get out.
After a few close attempts the group decided to book it for an exit that was in the back of the little kitchen in the bar. The friends left in a hurry not giving their final remaining friend a clear plan.
“Thanks guys! Thanks for not TELLING ME THE PLAN!” The tone was in the midst of transitioning from rather annoyed to fearing for their life. But rather than hearing screams and carious grunts the room was eerily silent. It’s at this moment that they realized someone just saw their outburst. Turning to face the one man army they noticed the umbrella that had been previously used to take out at least half of the patrons in the bar who are currently laying on the ground. “Put the umbrella down.” The rather well dressed man slowly followed orders as he gently placed his Kingsman umbrella onto the floor. “Now, unlock the doors.” With some loud clicking the entrance was now unlocked. “Ok I’m going to leave.” It was an agonizingly slow exit as they never turned their back on the stranger.
“Sorry I ruined your night out.” Once his accent came out their heart dropped just the tiniest bit, it didn’t help that he sheepishly scratched the back of his neck exposing a rather good physique in the muscles of his arms.
“No, do not try to play the cute guy card with me.” Their hands pressed onto their hips as the shortness of breath from the entire situation finally caught up. A strained sigh came over as the lights reflecting off the rainy pavements were not helping.
“The cute card?” His hands fixed his suit as he finally exited the bar smoothly opening the umbrella right over both of their heads. “I’d rather say I’m just charming in general.” His wink was met with a side eye. “Alright I kind of get the sense that maybe I did something wrong.”
“Hmmmm I’m not sure let me go ask someone in the bar if they know,” It was the fake walk back to the bar that made him chuckle. “Oh yeah that’s right, they’re all passed out!”
“Would it make you feel better if I said I was Batman or something?”
“Batman doesn’t fight crime dressed like Bruce Wayne.”
“Batman isn’t Bruce Wayne.” The seriousness in his voice just made the joke even better. Their eyes rolled with a smile as a well deserved slug was met on his shoulder. “Let’s start over,” He offered his hand for a shake. “Eggsy.”
“Eggsy?” The bridge of their nose scrunched up in thought. “I haven’t been in the UK that long but I will admit that’s the most unique name I’ve come across so far.”
“Well my real name is Gary but I go by Eggsy!” His face was beaming as he explained the story of his nickname. On the other hand the poor bystander was just wanting to go home.
“Yeah that’s really cool and all but I kind of need to get home.” It was their polite yet desperate grimace and the shuffling of feet that made Eggsy connect the dots. Maybe don’t go straight for someone you’re interested in right after making them think they were your next victim. The string of muttered curses that left his lips made it hard to not fall deeper into the surprisingly chill and trendy guy. “Y/N, forgot to tell you. That’s my name.” Finally learning the mystery person’s name gave Eggsy a little faith that he wasn’t a complete failure with charming someone.
“That has to be the weirdest name I’ve ever heard.”
“Oh shut up!” In what would be the weirdest of situations the two found light at the end of the tunnel, a blossoming friendship that Eggsy only dreamed would turn into something else only with time. “No but seriously I have work at 7AM, I need sleep.”
“Do you need a ride?” A part of Eggsy was holding onto hope that the offer would be accepted but he knew the chances were slim.
“As much fun as that sounds, I drove here.” Y/N held up their keys as they pressed the lock button a couple of times causing the car to beep back. “Thanks for the offer.” The night was cold as they rubbed their hands together. “I hope to never see you pissed off at a bar ever again.” A cheesy smile was plastered on their face as Eggsy’s face flushed slightly but due to the cold weather he was able to hide it.
“Yeah hopefully next time we meet, it isn’t like this.” Y/N’s head turned towards him as they laughed a bit.
“What do you want my number or something?” The laugh died fairly quickly as they noticed the look on his face.
“I mean, I wouldn’t be opposed.” He gently kicked a nearby rock. After a quick number exchange the two finally went their separate ways. Y/N noticed the number scribbled on the back of some business card as they slipped it over for further inspection.
“Kingsman?” Some store they had never heard of as they just got in their car and headed back to their apartment. Opening the door their roommate came barreling through giving them a hug.
“Oh my gosh, I was so worried when we lost you at the bar!” Y/N’s shoulders slumped into the hug.
“Yeah you guys were real worried alright.” The tone and sentiment were definitely called for especially since nobody even reached out to help. Not wanting to give it the light of day Y/N just went to their own little room and locked the door. That whole friends thing was for another day, but not now.
The next morning was uneventful as their shift went by with nothing really special happening. Not a bad day, not a good day, just a day. But hey at least the customer’s weren’t the absolute worst today.
“Can I clock out?” The manager slightly jumped in her seat not noticing their hire, engrossed in their emails.
“Oh yeah, thanks for your help.” And with the okay to leave it was a race to find somewhere to get food. With food on the brain, they almost passed something until a shiny golden logo caught their eye. It was the Kingsman store, Y/N took a peek through the window to see what exactly was being sold there but was met with Eggsy who sat across from another man dressed up just like him.
“No way.”

RHW: Chapter One
Tumblr media
Story Page / Playlist / Wattpad / AO3
Please read!! A/N: I am so excited that we're finally getting into the story properly now. You're really going to meet Taron and get a feel for Liliana, Evelyn and Jacob too which is so fun. This chapter means a lot to me for so many different reasons, but mainly because I have poured quite literally my soul into the flashback part of this. While there are a couple of differences and theatrics, the entire thing is real and still very raw so please be kind and read the trigger warnings. But without further ado, @brayndilyn and I would like to say thank you for the love on the prologue, and we hope you love chapter just as much!
Word Count: 6.4k
Warnings: Alcohol consumption, mentions of adultery, depictions of narcistic behaviour, mental health in children.
November 5th, 2021
Two and a half excruciatingly long years filled with hundreds of emails, a rigorous editing process, and the original publishing date being pushed back due to scheduling conflicts, all led up to this moment. The moment that she stepped foot into the venue and saw everyone there for her.
It was all worth it. She had finally done it. Liliana could proudly say that she was a published author and for the first time since she pitched the book idea to Martin and Evangeline, the stress that she had buried deep inside her began to dissipate.
For a moment, she could breathe again. Maybe it was the p
rosecco that had been thrust into her hand as she walked through the door. It didn’t matter. She was at her book launch and she could breathe. Even if it was just for a little while.
She was finally at her book launch event, something she wasn’t sure would ever actually wind up happening, surrounded by everybody who had helped make the book an actual thing. Martin, Evangeline and Charlotte who stood chatting to one another and laughing about something Martin had said; Jacob who was chatting to book shop owners about book signings up and down the country; book reviewers who had read advanced copies of the book but who wanted quotes for their articles; other authors who worked with Between the Lines; her entire publishing team; and her best friend since university and editor all in one room. For her.
Between the Lines had hired a beautiful room in East London for the event, and had decked it out perfectly. A canopy of fairy lights shone above everyone and small tables had been scattered around the room for people to stand at and chat. There were balloons everywhere and a white carpet that led from the door to the table at the very end of the room.
Liliana’s breath caught in her throat as she saw it. Over a hundred copies of her book sat elegantly, inviting the guests to take a copy of the finished product home with them to read, or to gift. She descended the stairs and only then did she realise just how busy the event was. People stood close together chatting about the industry, their lives, and the book, and Liliana had to squeeze her way past.
She got pulled into a few different conversations as she made her way to the table. Only one thing remained the same with each conversation. Every person she spoke to congratulated her on the book and told her how much they’d enjoyed the story.
It was overwhelming to have so many people tell her how amazing she was and how great the book was. Everything started with a small seed of an idea and it had led to that evening. She couldn’t be any more proud of herself and she loved that everyone seemed to enjoy the book that she had poured blood, sweat and tears into.
So many tears.
When she finally managed to reach the table of books, she tilted the remnants of her first glass of prosecco down her throat in a last ditch attempt to stop herself from crying. Throughout the process of printing the book, she had refrained from looking at the finished product until the launch event. She’d insisted that she wanted to take it all in with everyone around her but in reality it was so that she didn’t pull it out of production.
Even after two years of knowing that the book was happening and that people were going to read her story, the thought of people actually reading it made her insides twist uncomfortably. She had been far more vulnerable than she had set out to be and she worried that people were going to look at her with sympathy rather than anything else. She didn’t want sympathy. All she wanted was to tell children and teenagers that they aren’t alone in whatever they’re going through.
The tips of her fingers ran over the title of the book, the words ‘Still Holding On’, raised off the page and shinier than the background. Her name sat proudly at the bottom.
Liliana Esme.
She snapped a quick photo of the book and smiled to herself. Tears pricked her eyes as she stared at it. She was happy. Happier than she had been in a long time. Everything had started to fall into place and she felt like her life meant something. Like she was doing what she was meant to be doing.
The room was exceptionally crowded when she turned back to look at everyone who had come out to celebrate with her. Martin, Jacob, Evelyn and a few other colleagues were at a table close by and they beckoned over to her. She let them know that she would be there shortly and Evelyn turned to her with a bright smile. Liliana breathed deeply and she mouthed a thank you to her friend who simply winked at her.
The event was a big deal and Liliana had been a bag of anxiety for weeks leading up to it. She had bought multiple dresses before deciding on the sage green one she wore; she had rehearsed the speech she was supposed to make over and over again until it was perfect and she had told herself, and Evelyn, on multiple occasions that she wasn’t going because it was all too much for her and she was overwhelmed.
Yet as she stood watching everybody socialise, she was so glad that she didn’t cancel. That Evelyn had talked her into not cancelling on everybody the night before. Everyone was there for her and nobody had said anything negative to her like her mind had told her that they would.
Martin walked over to where Liliana was and wrapped a gentle arm around her shoulder, hugging her softly as she smiled at him.
‘Our esteemed guests,’ he shouted into the room, tapping a spoon against his glass of prosecco to get everyone’s attention. ‘Can we all give a round of applause for our amazing author, Liliana?’
The room erupted into applause and Liliana couldn’t contain the smile that played at her lips.
‘I remember Liliana walking into a conference room two years ago with these insanely detailed slides and she handed Evangeline and I both this folder with all of the information we could possibly want. I knew as soon as she handed me that, that one day we would be at her book launch. And here we are. Liliana has worked tirelessly throughout the process of her book. She came into the office daily and got on with regular work. But I would often walk down to the offices and find her writing or talking to Evelyn about the book and I loved it. We are so grateful to have you be part of our team, Liliana. Here’s to you.’
Everyone lifted their glasses in the air and toasted Liliana. Martin moved a few steps to the left and gave Liliana the spotlight. She smiled at everyone and filled her lungs with air before sipping her prosecco lightly.
‘Thank you so much, everyone. I’ve practised this speech hundreds of times already. I practised it in the shower; in my head on the tube on the way to work; in bed before I sleep; when I’m cooking dinner. You get the gist,’ she chuckled. ‘This book means more to me than words will ever describe. I have poured the most vulnerable version of myself onto these pages and I have seriously lost count of how many times I deleted things and then rewrote them. I cried more than I have in years while writing this and I feel like if I had any tears left to cry, I would be a complete mess right now. Thank you so much for coming and joining me while I celebrate this new chapter of my life, pun fully intended.’
Another round of applause echoed throughout the room and people slowly started to go back to their private conversations. Liliana took a minute to really let everything sink in before she walked over to Evelyn and Jacob who were biting at the nail to hug her and let their excitement out. They pulled her into a group hug when she got to them and she chuckled loudly, holding them as tightly as she could.
‘God this is all so overwhelming,’ she whispered as she looked around the room again.
‘I am so proud of you,’ Evelyn said. ‘Like so incredibly proud of you.’
Liliana hugged her again and flagged down a waiter to get another glass of champagne. ‘Thank you.’
‘So,’ Jacob said after grabbing himself another drink, ‘I was talking to James Daunt and he said that he is incredibly interested in getting you on a couple of signings.’
‘James Daunt?’ Liliana asked. Jacob only nodded. There was a certain glint in his eye that she couldn’t work out though. ‘As in…the founder of Daunt Books and current CEO of Waterstones?’
‘See, Evie? She knows more about this stuff than you thought. Yes, that James Daunt. I’m going to meet with him on Monday and see what kind of things we can offer one another. But I have a good feeling about this.’
‘Jacob, I know we said that these things might happen but a book tour already? Surely it’s too early!’
Jacob nodded, and Evelyn motioned for him to say something else. Liliana looked between her two friends with furrowed eyebrows, waiting for one of them to speak up.
‘Martin had a meeting earlier.’
‘Right? He always has meetings. This isn’t new information.’
‘No, it’s not. But the fact that you’re already stupidly close to being a Sunday Times Bestseller is.’
Liliana’s face dropped. ‘A Sunday Times Bestseller? The book doesn’t come out until tomorrow! How is that possible? I don’t. What?’
‘Preorders. It looks like your marketing ideas really paid off. Waterstones have a very limited supply that they can actually put in stores right now because of the number of preorders. Same with WHSmith. The chances of you getting the title is ridiculously high. And the fact that it’s a debut novel with these numbers is unheard of. It’s all Martin can talk about.’
Evelyn squeezed Liliana as she stared at Jacob. She couldn’t do anything but stare at him. Until a few people started to move away from the table closest to them and she saw the one person she hadn’t expected to see. She saw him.
He was standing in the far corner of the room on his own with her book in his hand. She could see from where she was that he was tracing the title with the tips of his fingers in a similar fashion to how she had when she first arrived. Her heart pounded deep within her chest when she saw him.
‘Excuse me, you two. I just need to go and say-’ she paused and looked back to her two friends, ‘-hi to somebody.’
Each step closer to him echoed in her ears. The click of her heels against the wooden floor was the loudest thing she could hear. The closer she got, the more she could see what he was doing. He wasn’t tracing the title as she’d first thought. He was tracing her name and there was the smallest hint of a smile on his face.
He’d changed a lot but that was to be expected when so long had passed. He’d grown a lot too. He was more manly and his shoulders were broader than she’d ever seen them. The sleeves of his navy blue suit jacket were tight against his biceps.
Short stubble grew on the lower half of his face and a pair of gold framed glasses perched against his nose and Liliana broke out in a smile. She’d always told him that he needed them but he’d always brushed her off. He said he wouldn’t look good in glasses. He did.
Even though his looks had changed, he still strongly resembled the boy she’d known all those years before.
‘Taron,’ she whispered. Her voice was barely audible over the noise in the room but he’d heard her.
He looked up from the book and Liliana could visibly see his shoulders relax ever so slightly. ‘Liliana,’ he said, almost as if he wasn’t sure that it was really her there. The same way she had when she’d seen him from the other side of the room. She wanted to reach her hand out and touch him, just to make sure. ‘Congratulations.’
‘I didn’t know if you would come.’ She couldn’t stop staring at him. He couldn’t stop staring at her. ‘I kind of thought you would have forgotten me.
Taron’s face dropped and he shook his head. ‘How could I ever forget you, Lil?’
Lil.
One word and her heart pounded harder than it had been before. She could remember the last time she’d heard the nickname fall from his lips. They were on a train platform making promises that neither of them would keep.
The name only he was allowed to call her. Nobody who knew them both dared. There had been times when people Liliana had met tried to call her Lil but she had asked them politely if they minded not calling her that. And for the most part people just accepted her wishes and continued calling her something else. Those who tried to ask why were met with a ‘because I don’t like it’. She did like it. She loved it. But only when it was Taron calling her it.
‘Can I give you a hug?’ He asked tentatively.
Liliana nodded with a smile and sighed happily when her arms wrapped around his waist and he leaned his chin on her shoulder. He swayed her lightly but never pulled away.
‘I don’t know why this feels so strange,’ he mumbled. ‘It feels so right but so…different? I don’t even think that’s the right word to describe it.’
‘I know,’ she said quietly. His arms tightened around her a little and her eyes fluttered closed. ‘But I guess that’s what fourteen years apart will do to us. It’s almost like we’re strangers again even though we knew one another so well before.’
‘Fourteen years?’ Taron asked as he pulled away, completely bewildered. ‘I’ll be damned.’
‘I try not to think about it,’ Liliana chuckled sadly. ‘It means we’re getting old.’
She tipped the remainder of her prosecco down her throat with an amused smile. The last time they’d seen one another, they couldn’t drink legally. Not that it ever stopped them. They’d moved on from alcopops at house parties in Aberystwyth to prosecco at major events in London. Taron joined her in finishing his glass, grabbing two more from the waiter who was walking past at just the right time.
‘You’re younger than me, Lil.’
‘By three weeks. That’s barely any difference! We’re both almost thirty-two. That’s just too crazy for me to even begin to think about.’ They both laughed, tapping their glasses together in a show of agreement. ‘Thank you, for coming tonight. It means a lot that you came.’
Taron nodded, holding a hand to her shoulder in comfort. ‘I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I can’t lie to you, I did think that maybe you had forgotten about me. It’s been so long, Lil. Too long.’
His voice was full of hurt and she tried her hardest to not cry in front of him. ‘How could I ever have forgotten you, T?’ He shrugged. ‘I’ve kept up with your life a little bit, big shot movie star. I saw the poster for Rocketman a couple of years ago on the way home from work. It was actually the day that I pitched the book. There was a queue outside the cinema and then I saw the poster. I was so proud of you. I am so insanely proud of you.’
‘I’m so proud of you, big shot author.’ He picked up the book that he’d placed on the table next to him and waved it in the air, earning a chuckle from his former best friend. ‘I’d say I can’t believe you finally did it but I can believe it. You were so set on being an author and now look at you.’
‘Did you read the acknowledgements?’ Liliana asked, motioning to the book with a tip of her head. ‘I think you’d like them.’
‘I read the dedication. It was really lovely. But who’s Matilda?’
‘My little sister.’ Taron’s eyes widened slightly and his head tilted to the right. He took a deep breath as though processing the news that she was a sister. ‘She’s ten now, and the reason that the book even exists.’
‘Is she here?’
Liliana blinked back tears and shook her head, pulling her top lip between her teeth as she twisted the stem of her glass between her fingers to distract herself from the fact that the only other person she would have wanted to be there couldn’t be there.
‘I’m sorry,’ Taron said, holding his hand out. ‘I shouldn’t have asked.’
‘You weren’t to know,’ Liliana smiled, sniffling. ‘I’d have loved for her to be here but it didn’t work out. I really do think that you’ll like the acknowledgements, by the way.’
Taron flicked through the pages of the book until he saw the acknowledgments, opening it wider so that he could read them. He pushed his glasses up his nose properly so that he could see before he started to read.
This book has been two decades in the making. I first thought of the idea when I was twelve, riding my bike on the streets of Aberystwyth with my best friend, singing at the top of my lungs. I let myself believe that I was going to lift off the ground and fly far away. And I did. To some degree.
But I never forgot my best friend.
Taron, I want to thank you. Thank you for being there for me through the darkest days and always believing in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself. And thank you for never, ever giving up on me. I miss you so much and I hope that one day you’ll read this book and realise just how big of an impact you had on my life all those years ago.
And to Tina. My second mum who loved me like her own daughter and showed me what it was to become a strong, independent woman. Without you, I wouldn’t know how to survive. Not only did you teach me what it means to be a great person, you also taught me how to love with my whole heart. If it weren’t for your love and your pride in me, this book would not exist. Thank you.
‘You know she’s going to sob when she sees this, right?’ Taron chuckled through a sniffle, wiping his cheeks to remove the tears that had started to fall. ‘Thank you. So much. I missed you too.’
He grabbed her and pulled her into another tight hug, lifting her onto her tiptoes and burying his face in her neck.
‘Don’t crease the dress,’ she giggled, wrapping her arms around him just as tightly. She felt secure in his arms and she smiled into him, letting herself feel like a child again, just for a short moment. ‘I meant it all. Thank you for never giving up on me. Your mum and you were family to me and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank you both enough.’
‘I didn’t do any of it for a thank you,’ he whispered into the shell of her ear, goosebumps rising on her arms and legs. ‘But you’re welcome nonetheless. And mum really is going to sob.’
‘I’m trying my hardest not to right now, I can’t lie.’
They pulled apart and looked at each other for a little moment. Taron wiped a single tear that had started to fall down her cheek with his thumb and smiled at her before they both turned to face the room. Liliana was still so overwhelmed by everything that had happened that evening but with Taron by her side, nothing felt as scary anymore.
‘If only eleven-year-old me could see me now.’
November 3rd, 2000
‘And this,’ the guest speaker said as he changed the slide on the overhead projector, ‘is only a minor injury that I’ve seen thanks to the unsafe use of fireworks.’
The entire hall of year seven students groaned, and Liliana closed her eyes tightly trying her best to not vomit on the person in front of her. She hated fireworks at the best of times but when she saw the damage that they could do to people, she swore to never touch one, no matter how old she got.
Taron turned towards her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his side unnoticeably, not prepared to get told off by one of the teachers in the hall, nevermind getting asked multiple times by the other students if they were boyfriend and girlfriend. ‘You know that only happens when idiots get a hold of them, right?’
‘We’re eleven!’ She whisper-yelled. ‘They don’t need to show us this stuff. It’s not like we’re going to be stupid enough to actually use fireworks.’
‘I can give you the names of two people in our year group who would make you think differently,’ he whispered, motioning to the front of the hall.
Liliana peered to the front left of the navy bleachers where the two ‘bad boys’ of the year group sat, accompanied by a teaching assistant who had, on numerous occasions already in the fifteen minute assembly, told them to stop talking and pay attention.
‘But it’s not like I’m going to be setting any off tonight. Or ever, for that matter. My mum says we’re going to Aunty Rachel’s for a bonfire and I will be in pyjamas, playing on my Gameboy in the living room and eating my weight in bonfire toffee. I don’t want any part of bonfire night. I hate it.’
Taron chuckled but quietened quickly when Mr Charles looked up at the two of them. He turned his attention back to the front of the hall and Liliana followed his lead. Though she greatly regretted it when yet another disturbing image of an injury was shown on the large screen. Her stomach twisted into tight knots at the sight. She really hated bonfire night.
As they were about to be shown the different types of fireworks, and no doubt the dangers that come with each, the door to the hall opened and their head of year Mrs Harris walked in and scanned the bleachers. Her eyes stopped at Liliana and she gave her a sad smile.
Taron looked at Liliana in confusion and she could only shrug.
‘I’m really sorry,’ Mrs Harris said quietly from where she stood, ‘but can I pinch Liliana Thomas please?’
Liliana stood up and started to move towards the steps in the centre of the bleachers to walk to her head of year. ‘Bring your bag with you, sweetheart.’
The room erupted in a group ‘ooooh’ and Liliana’s heart sank to the pit of her stomach. She would be the talk of the year group for the rest of the day and for the following week for sure. Taron passed her bag to her and gave her a smile.
‘I’ll see you on Monday.’
‘See you Monday,’ she whispered.
Mrs Harris ushered Liliana to be as fast as she could, and when she was within reaching distance, she placed her hand on her back and guided her out of the hall. They walked through to the reception area and Liliana’s heart pounded the second she saw her mum waiting for her.
Her mum had tear stained cheeks and held Liliana tightly when she saw her. Liliana was scared and confused all at the same time, the knots in her stomach pulling tighter with each breath she took.
‘Mum, what’s happening?’ She asked quietly.
‘We’re going to your Aunty Rachel’s house now. I’ll explain in the car. Thank you Mrs Harris, for letting me take her home.’
The head of year smiled sweetly. ‘It’s no problem. I’ll see you on Monday, Liliana. Well done in choir this morning, by the way. You sounded lovely.’
‘Thank you. I’ll see you on Monday.’
The walk to the car, despite only taking ten seconds in reality, seemed to take hours. Each step Liliana took got heavier, her feet dragging behind her like lead weights holding her down. Her uncle was in the car waiting for her and her mum with his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were an off white, yellow colour. It was a wonder that he could turn the wheel at all with how tightly he was holding it.
‘Mum, what’s going on? I’m scared.’
Liliana fastened her seatbelt and pulled it tight against her middle, settling herself into the seat and staring at the back of her mum’s head. Eliza turned to face her daughter, only half of her face visible from the passenger seat of the car. The air in the car was thick and Liliana found it difficult to breathe. She opened the window a little and breathed deeply. The cold November air burned her nostrils but it was easier to breathe so she didn’t care.
The car lurched forward but Liliana continued to watch her mum.
‘Your dad cheated on me,’ she confessed, sniffing loudly. ‘It’s why he wanted us to break up a few weeks ago. I had a feeling something was happening so your Uncle Tom took me to find out. I caught him with Carolyn this afternoon. I came straight here to pick you up so that he couldn’t. I don’t want you around her. Or him right now.’
Everything turned to slow motion around them. The fifteen minute drive felt like a fifteen hour drive. There was no music playing in the car as there normally was so Liliana was alone with her thoughts, the faint pounding of her heart in her ears the only sound she could focus on. Time didn’t feel real. One second they were at the school and the next they were on the main road headed towards town. But it felt like they hadn’t started to move.
As she sat in the car with the world passing by around her, things started to make sense. Her dad was doing more plumbing jobs than he had been in a while, and on days when he normally wouldn’t. He would leave before she went to school and come home after she was in bed. He would often tell Liliana and Eliza that he hadn’t realised what time it was, or that his friend had cooked him dinner as a thank you for helping with the plumbing. He would hide the name of the person calling him, picking up his phone and running to another bedroom to talk. He was deleting messages when he sent them and he didn’t seem to pay attention to anybody else in the house.
Everything seemed to slot together and Liliana couldn’t help but cry. It was all too much for her. She thought that her parents were madly in love with one another and that they would be together forever. That she would be one of the lucky ones whose parents didn’t divorce. They had spoken about maybe trying to have another baby, to give Liliana a sibling. But that clearly wasn’t going to happen anymore.
Her dad had cheated and lost the trust of not only his wife but his daughter too. Liliana felt sick knowing what he had done, and the hurt that he had caused.
Only three weeks prior he had told Liliana that he and her mum were splitting up because they didn’t love one another anymore. She had been heartbroken and cried herself to sleep that night, sobbing uncontrollably into her pillow thinking about a life without her parents together. The next day, when Eliza had gone to the house to see Liliana, her dad had a panic attack severe enough that he wound up in the hospital hooked up to machines to check the strength of his heart.
Eliza had gone with him and by the time they got home late that evening, they told Liliana that they were back together and for three weeks, they acted as if breaking up never happened. But nothing had been the same since.
They’d been on spontaneous trips at the weekend, visiting the zoo and a theme park, and travelling further north to see her grandparents whom she hadn’t seen in a while. But no trip could heal the wounds of having her emotions toyed with the way that they had been. She still cried herself to sleep most nights, and she’d woken up on a couple of occasions to an ambulance parked outside and paramedics talking to her dad.
‘I don’t want to talk to him,’ she said as they got nearer her aunt’s house. ‘I don’t want to talk to him if he calls. Not right now at least.’
‘That’s fine,’ Eliza said sadly. ‘You’re old enough now to make your own decisions about that. You don’t have to see him until you’re ready. But even when you are, I’d rather you not be around Carolyn.’
‘I understand.’
Her dad didn’t reach out for a couple of weeks. To reach out would be to reach out to Eliza as Liliana had no way of communication other than through her mum. He didn’t know how Liliana felt about anything, or what she had been told, but clearly it couldn’t have mattered that much to him if he couldn’t be bothered to pick up the phone or visit her.
And then one day he did reach out. He wanted to see Liliana, and Liliana wanted to see him. She hadn’t seen him for two weeks and she needed to see her dad. She cried when she found out that she was going to be seeing him but she didn’t quite know why.
Eliza agreed to him seeing Liliana, but insisted that he come to the house to see her for an hour and that he leave Carolyn at home. He walked into the house with his tail between his legs, not looking at Eliza once. Liliana, who had been excited to see her dad when she knew he was going to be there, didn’t know how to react when he was actually there.
She hugged him quickly before running to sit back on the sofa where she had left her Gameboy playing a game. It was an awkward visit. Neither she nor her dad knew what to say to one another. They didn’t really have anything to say to one another. Liliana wanted to know why her dad had cheated but he didn’t try to say anything so she left it, turning the TV on to watch something.
‘Why are you keeping her from me?’ He asked Eliza when she had finished prepping Liliana’s dinner. He stood from the sofa to stand over her.
Liliana cowered into the corner of the sofa, lifting her Gameboy to play as a way of distracting herself from what she knew would be a blowout argument which she didn’t want to hear.
‘I haven’t been keeping her from you,’ Eliza replied firmly. ‘It’s Lili who’s said that she doesn’t want to talk to you right now. And I don’t blame her, either. After what you did to the two of us, I’m surprised she even wanted to see you today.’
‘Oh fuck off, Eliza. You’re always trying to get her to pick sides and you do everything to get her to pick yours. I’m so fucking glad I don’t have to deal with you anymore, you bitch.’
‘I’m the one trying to get her to pick sides? What about when you picked her up from school the day you kicked me out and you told her that we just didn’t love one another anymore? How about that? That wasn’t you trying to seem like the good guy? Get the fuck out of my house.’
‘Your house? That’s rich. It was my parents who picked it for us. MINE. I’m only letting you stay here because of Liliana. If it weren’t for her, you’d be homeless or living with your shitty mum.’
‘Get. The. Fuck. Out. Of. My. House. I’ll call the police if I have to.’ Liliana stayed frozen on the sofa with tears streaming down her face so fast that her eyes had started to sting.
‘Look, you’ve made her cry now. How does that feel? Knowing you’ve made your own daughter cry?’
‘Don’t bring her into this. She’s scared because you started screaming. Now get the fuck out!’
Her dad walked to the front door and swung it open harshly, stepping outside and walking to his car. ‘You’ve not heard the last of me yet,’ he threatened as he unlocked the car and opened the door.
‘I hope you wrap that thing around a tree and die, arsehole!’
Liliana sobbed into the sofa, more scared than she had ever been. It felt like a part of her had died inside. How would she amount to anything? She was destined for the same life her parents had, she could feel it.
November 5th, 2021
The book launch had started to die down and slowly but surely, people were starting to make their way home. It was getting close to ten thirty and Liliana was less than sober. She smiled at everybody she saw and offered them a glass of prosecco. When they turned down her offer she offered a shot instead. Evelyn and Jacob had taken her to a table to keep her from dancing on top of one, but they both loved how carefree she was.
The entire evening had been a success and Liliana was on cloud nine. Jacob had continued to speak to different book stores and had got a list of the best ones he wanted to talk to the following week before he would present his ideas to Liliana. Even if he wanted to talk to her about it that night, there was no way that she would remember it.
Every time a round of prosecco was walked around the room, she’d had one. If she still had some in her glass when another waiter walked by, she downed it and grabbed a fresh one. Evelyn had joined her for a little while but then switched to water so that she could make sure that Liliana got home safely. It was a forty-five minute Uber ride back to Liliana’s flat and at least one of them had to have some wits about them. And it was Liliana’s night so Evelyn forfeited her alcohol consumption, something that Liliana took as a need to drink for the both of them.
‘God I’m so lonely recently,’ Liliana sighed, elbow on the table and cheek smushed into her hand. ‘It’s been like, god I don’t even know how long since I last went on a date or anything. It’s like there’s this fire in me and I don’t know how to put it out.
‘You just need to get yourself out there, babe,’ Jacob laughed as he shimmied in front of her playfully. ‘When was the last time you got laid?’
‘I can’t even remember,’ Liliana groaned, fake crying.
‘Hey, I have to get going,’ Taron whispered in Liliana’s ear, hoping to not interrupt the conversation. ‘I’m sorry to pull you away from your conversation.’
Liliana put her hand on his arm to steady herself. The room had started to spin a few minutes before and she found it difficult to stand up straight. ‘Oh, I’m glad you did,’ she laughed. ‘Jacob was about to suggest something crude and I’d rather not listen to it. I’m so glad that you came. It was really lovely getting to see you again.’
‘I’m so glad that you invited me,’ he replied. ‘Would it be too cheesy to get your number, if it’s changed since we last spoke, so that we could maybe sort out to meet again? I don’t want to go back to being strangers.’
Liliana smiled, letting herself lean against his arm gently. He smelled good. A lot nicer than what he used to smell like as a teen. ‘I’m so glad you don’t wear that Diesel cologne anymore.’
‘The one you bought me as a gift?’
‘Yeah, it smelled so bad.’
Taron laughed. ‘Nice to know you thought I smelled bad.’
‘I meant, you smell better now.’
‘Thanks, I think. Here, let me get my phone.’
He pulled his phone from his pocket and opened his contacts app, scrolling down to L and clicking on Liliana’s name. She noticed and couldn’t help but smiling, scrolling through contacts until she got to ‘T’.
‘I wanted to text you when I saw the Rocketman poster,’ she confessed. ‘Took me a solid fifteen minutes to talk myself out of it.’
‘You talked yourself out of texting me? How come?’
Liliana shrugged gently. ‘I guess I was worried that you didn’t remember me. And then I realised that your phone number would have probably changed and it would have been far too awkward sending a random person a photo of the Rocketman poster telling them how proud I was that they’d made it big.’
‘Okay yeah that’s probably for the best,’ he laughed quietly. ‘Here, put your new number in here and I’ll text you so that you can save mine.’
‘Can you do it for me? I’m seeing double right now.’
Taron nodded, taking Liliana’s phone and sending himself a text. ‘Here you go. I promise I’ll text you soon, okay. Thank you for a great night.’
‘Thank you. I should probably head home soon to be honest.’
‘Make sure to drink some water, okay?’
‘I promise, T.’
‘Goodnight, Lil.’

Taron came home about mid-afternoon, tired out from a long week. He had been working 12 hour days for the last 3 weeks, consistent of filming, wardrobe meetings, and interviews. Thank god he has a break for the next week. He kicks off his shoes and stands still for a moment, embracing the quiet atmosphere. "Richard?" he calls out softly. His boyfriend steps out of the kitchen soon after.
Richard’s face softens seeing his mate, a compassionate smile spread across his lips. "You're still wearing your jacket, bub." he chuckles softly. He walks towards the Welsh, warm and welcoming.
"Don't care. Need you." Taron speaks just barely above a whisper and falls into his arms. He buries his face in his chest and holds onto him tightly. God, how he loves being in his arms.
Richard wraps his arms around him and gently rubs his lower back. "Tired, darling?" he asks and T just nods. He plants a soft kiss onto his temple and softly glides his fingertips over the back of his neck. "We should get you to bed early then. Looks like you could use the rest."
"M'tired but not sleepy." he sighs, hands holding onto the comfortable fabric of Richard's sweater firmly.
"I'll soothe your mind and body enough for you to sleep, I promise. Why don't you go and take a shower before we eat?" he suggests. Richard had prepared their dinner a good while ago while Taron worked. He just needed to put on some finishing touches and throw it in the oven.
"Join me?" Taron asks and looks up at him with the best puppy look in his eyes he could manage. He knows very well that Richard can rarely resist that look. Those green orbs enlarging and his pout sending him over the moon.
Richard smiles softly and unzips Taron’s jacket, giving in to his request. "Of course. I'll just put our dinner into the oven. I'll be with you in a moment"
Taron nods and makes his way to the bathroom upstairs after kissing him on the cheek. He opens the door and his mouth falls open in surprise. The bathtub is filled with water at the perfect temperature, bubbles and color added. Candles illuminated the room with a warm hue and a soothing lavender scent lulls him in. What was be occasion? Had Richard already planned for this?
"Baabee?" he asks, walking back downstairs to Richard. "What's with the candles and lavender?" he questions and sees the already set table with some wine glasses and everything. Once again, his mouth falls open in shock at the gesture. He looks at his boyfriend with eyebrows raised. Did he miss his own birthday again?
Richard closes the oven and walks over to him, a slight chuckle leaving his lips. "Well first off, it's Valentine’s Day and you had to leave and be on set before I woke up. So we can continue the celebrations now."
Taron nods and gently takes his hand. "And?" That couldn’t just be the only thing.
"And you've been working so much lately that you come home all exhausted. It breaks my heart a little." Richard gently wraps his arms around his waist. "Which is why I wanna pamper you a bit, ease the stress a little at a time." His lips curl into a small smile as he looks into his lover’s eyes.
Taron's face softens hearing that. "Aren't you the sweetest?" he breathes out and wraps his arms around his neck. He has been working really hard days with this new film, but it was worth it coming home to the person he loved every day. Seeing Richard’s smile and holding him tight every night made it all bearable.
Rich smiles and leans down, kissing him lovingly. The two savor the kiss for just a moment and enjoy each other’s warm embrace. They make their way upstairs to the bathroom and remove their clothes, getting into the water. Taron takes his chance to cuddle up against Richard, his back on his chest, and closes his eyes. He relaxes into his soothing touch as Richard takes cares of washing his body gently. He lets him rest a little while he shampoos his hair lovingly. Once finished with Taron, Richard cleans himself up and the pair carefully get out of the tub. Richard dries Taron off after wrapping his own towel around his body.
Taron insists on wearing some of Richard's clothes when they leave the bathroom, as he always does when he is exhausted. It provides a great comfort to him, whether Richard is there or not. They decide to have their dinner in the living room tonight. T is sitting on Richard's lap, a plate for both of them on his own lap as they eat carefully. "Mm I needed this." T hums happily as he digs into the lasagna Richard made. He could never get over how great of a cook he is.
"I hoped so." Rich chuckles softly and kisses his cheek.
-
Taron groans softly and turns onto his back, looking up at Rich with a frustrated pout. "I can't fall asleep." he says annoyed. They had finished their dinner almost a half hour ago and Richard told Taron to rest. So Taron repositioned himself on the couch and tried just that.
Richard gently runs his hand through Taron's hair, who's head is resting on his lap. "Got too much on your mind?" he asks and T hums, answering his question.
He grumbles and rubs his eyes. "I can't stop thinking about all the stuff I have to do and-." Stopping mid sentence, he sits up and huffs tiredly.
"Taron, tonight starts your week off from working so hard. Okay, there's nothing you have to do." he says softly, but firmly. "I'm home for a few days as well, so we can actually do nothing all day." he smiles.
Taron smirks and straddles his lap, wrapping his arms around his neck. "That sounds almost too perfect. Am I dreaming?"
Rich chuckles softly and pulls him into a loving kiss. "You're adorable."
"Can we go and cuddle in bed?" Taron asks sweetly. Of course he truly wanted to cuddle, but there’s an underlying ulterior motive to the cuddle session.
"Of course." he nods and they get up from the couch. Richard folds the blankets they were using, and Taron couldn’t resist. Rich is caught by surprise when Taron kisses him again, a soft moan escaping the Scottish man’s chest.
Taron wraps his arms around his neck and stumbles back a few steps, his back hitting the wall behind him. He stops and looks up at him with lust momentarily gleaming in his eyes.
Richard grabs his waist and pins him to the wall, looking down at him. The sudden need in Taron’s eyes catches him by surprise, and slightly overwhelms him. "I think I know exactly what you need to put you to sleep." Rich chuckles softly.
"Maybe." he says, a blush quickly coating his cheeks and ears.
Richard smiles at the reaction and gently caresses his cheek. "I love you."
"I love you too." Taron smiles softly.
He leans down, connecting their lips. They share a passionate kiss and Taron pulls him closer to his frame. Holding each other close and slightly tighter with each movement.
Taron smiles and a quiet moan falls from him as their lips touch. He kisses him passionately, breath hitching as Richard's hands caress his sides.
Richard notices the change and gently grabs his hips. "Maybe I know what you'll need to relieve the tension, darling."
T raises his eyebrows at him, holding back a grin. "I'm all ears."
"You want me to take care of you?" he asks and lets his hands slip under Taron's sweater, gently touching his skin. His touch felt like fore, but send goosebumps all over at the same time. Taron yearned for more, ached for it even.
"Please." Taron answers quickly and buries his face in Richard's shoulder, blushing at how desperate he sounds. He truly did need to get the tension out of his body from the long nights. But he wouldn’t dare turn down an offer to have it handled by Richard.
He chuckles softly and kisses his head. "I love you, darling."
"Love you too" he says softly, feeling his lips curl into a smile. He lets out a giggle as Richard guides them away from the wall and onto their big sofa, lying Taron down and hovering over him.
-
He couldn't fully believe how good it feels. Though they have done this multiple times now, Richard seems to know every little thing that drives him crazy and pushes him closer to the edge. Somehow, they had moved upstairs after a very steamy make out session. And now here Taron was lying on their bed, clothes gone, legs open, and Richard moving towards where he needed him most. His hands are gripping the sheets, trying to steady himself before he lost his mind. He can’t muffle the sounds leaving his throat as Richard kissed his body, and usually he would have been flustered about it. Taron was always vocal in bed, but for them to be barely starting, it’s almost embarrassing. But this time, he doesn't even have the time to think about it, and Rich doesn't seem to mind. His whimpers are needy as Richard's lips wander up his inner thigh again. He takes one hand and rakes his fingers through Richard’s dark hair, gently tugging on his scalp. "Rich... Babe...Pleasee."
"Patience, darling." he mumbles against his skin and places a delicate kiss onto his hip bone. "We haven't even started yet." A devious smirk flashes over his lips as he sneaks a glance in Taron’s direction.
Taron chuckles weakly at that, but moans softly as Richard's lips wander down his thigh, teeth gently grazing his skin. Then, he finally feels Richard's fingers pulling down his boxers. Only seconds later, his hands are wrapped around Taron’s thighs, spreading his legs open wide. All he can see are Richard's dark curls when looking down. He takes the opportunity to run a hand through them once he feels his tongue push against his hole. "Fuckin' hell..." he sighs deeply and his eyes flutter close at the feeling.
Richard's tongue works wonders along the area and the sounds coming from his lover are music to his ears. Taron writhes underneath his hold on his thighs as Richard’s tongue laps at his entrance. Richard takes a second to place two fingers in his mouth, preparing them with as much spit as he could, before slowly sliding them into Taron one at a time, opening him up just right. A groan erupts from Taron at the sudden again, but it’s pure bliss as his boyfriend slowly works his fingers inside him. But he doesn't stop there as he wraps his lips around his length, sucking softly at the tip. Taron melts as he is taken into Richard’s mouth. The warm and wet sensation is not foreign to him, but it comes as a relief as Richard slowly moves his head lower and lower with each dip of his head.
Taron gasps at the feeling and arches into his touch. Richard's fingers curl up against his prostate whilst his mouth works wonders on him at a steady pace. Already being worked up, Taron is struggling to keep his release at bay. He’s feeling every sensation Richard is giving him. Every tongue flick on his needy length, every time he hits the back of Richard’s throat, every curl of his fingers, every time Richard hallows his cheeks. Every action bringing him closer to the edge and building up that fire in his body. It quickly becomes too much for him to bear and all he can do is gasp and moan louder than before. Unable to warn him of what’s to come, his eyes flutter closed as his orgasm washes over him, leaving him whimpering his name and pulling at his hair. Hot ropes of cum paint the inside of Richard’s mouth and he moans around his length at the feeling. Once he finished, he swallows and slowly pulls away from his lover, giving the tip one last playful lick. Taron comes down from his high, panting softly and a crimson blush settling on his face. "God, I'm sorry." he apologizes breathlessly. His mind was so clouded in pleasure that he couldn’t focus on speaking.
Richard watches him, eyes darkened with lust, and smiles softly. "Nothing to be sorry for." he tells him and wraps his hand around his own cock, stroking himself and moaning at the much needed friction. "I’m gonna make you feel so good. Just like you want, darling." he promises, a devilish grin coming across his features. Taron’s eyes enlarged at his words, and a blush paints itself on his face, his ears hot to the touch. His boyfriend instructs him to move up towards the headboard and he complies. As he settles comfortably on the bed, Richard makes his way towards him, hovering a bit. He reaches into the bedside table and retrieves a bottle of lube. He squirts some into his hand and spreads it over his length, smirking because he catches Taron watching his hand work. The younger man licks his lip, biting down softly after. Richard applies more to his fingers and rubs them over his boyfriend’s entrance, slowly pushing in to coat his walls as best as he can. Taron holds his own legs open with a groan, patiently waiting for more than just his lover’s fingers inside of him.
Richard gently removes his fingers and positions himself over the younger man, holding his length in his hand. Slowly, he begins to make his way inside. Taron whines as Richard pushes into him, finally connecting their bodies. He arches into the movement and groans satisfied when Richard sinks in deep. One hand rests on his shoulder, the other is tangled in his hair, trying to steady himself. Richard gives him time to adjust, spreading kisses all over his neck.
Richard pushes in deep and slow, really relishing the fact that they have all the time in the world for this. It's just them and their love. Something about this slow, loving pace makes the atmosphere soo much more intimate. Makes their moans sound sweeter with each thrust.
Sure, rough sex was amazing too. Dominating your partner in bed while they submitted to your will, all in part to both getting the pleasure desired. The sucks, bites, and slaps that encompassed the moment. Hearing your partner beg for a release after holding out for as long as they could, or that was allowed.
But this moment, this slow and steady rhythm heightens both men’s senses in a way like no other. Their touched gentle and warm as their bodies are engulfed in warm embraces. Kisses so passionate and soft, it left them craving for more with each separation. Bodies intertwined in the most blissful of ways, while swallowing earned moans from the other. It makes goosebumps rise on their skin, but sweat slowly build and trickle down exposed areas. Their bodies move perfectly together and neither wants to stop anytime soon.
They share sweet kisses, muffling each others moans. Tears of pleasure run down Taron's face as Richard's length massages his prostate in a steady rhythm. His next moan is so broken up it makes Richard glance at him a little alarmed.
"Are you okay?" he asks gently and slows down the pace. He gently caresses his face and kisses his jaw.
"Mmm so good..don't stop, Rich." he nods quickly and closes his eyes, mouth falling open with a moan. Taking his word for it, he continues on, matching the speed of his previous pace. "More, pleasee" he begs a little.
Richard decides to change positions, knowing his boyfriend all too well. He pulls out and giggles at the protesting sound that leaves Taron's lips. He sits on his knees and hold his hands out for Taron. "Come here, my love."
Taron gets the hint and takes his hands, sitting up and moving onto his lap, easing him in slowly. He wraps his arms around his neck, legs around his waist, and moans deliciously as he sinks down onto his cock. Moving his hips, he starts riding him in a steady pace. He kisses Richard passionately, nipping and biting at each other’s lips until he slides his tongue into his mouth. Their tongues dancing aggressively with one another.
Richard's hands caress down his sides, settling on his hips to steady him as he thrusts up into him. He moans loudly as Taron rolls his hips down to meet him. It’s pure ecstasy in the air, as both of them had been waiting for this moment for a couple days. Their skin electrifying the other with touches, grips, and tight embraces. Every kiss and bites sending goosebumps. The moans, groans, and whimpers becoming music to their ears, and they will do anything to keep the song going. If only they had been recording this to look back on later. It’s only about them in this moment, which makes it all the more passionate and sultry. It doesn't take long for Taron to find his rhythm and bounce faster on him, moaning obscenely loud as he chases his high. His release had been building steadily. But now, it’s right there, ready to be let go. "Oh God, ohh I'm gonna-." he doesn't finish his sentence as a gasp replaces his words. Richard wraps his arms around him and sends him over the edge with only a few strokes.
Taron groans out his name and cums all over their chests, sloppily moving his hips as he rides through his orgasm. The thick, white ropes painting a picture on their skin. His head sinks onto his shoulder once it washes over and he whimpers a little at the overstimulation.
Now, its Richard’s turn. "Come on, darling. Cum for me." Taron says soft and breathlessly, lovingly fondles through his hair. "My beautiful, handsome, love." he praises him. Richard was very close and all it takes is for Taron to clench around him. The action sends Richard over the edge, a low gutteral groan leaving his swollen lips as he coats his walls with his cum. Taron moans softly at the sound, kissing his neck and jaw as he rides out his orgasm.
They collapse onto the matress together and pant softly. "Tired now?" he asks laughing breathlessly. He looks over at him lazily.
"Absolutely." T smirks and lazily grabs his hand, squeezing it. "Happy Valentine's day." he says softly after a moment.
"Happy Valentine's day, love." he smiles at him sweetly.

I just did a binge (re)watch of 'The Smoke' with a baby Taron Egerton and now I really want to write a whump-found-family-redemption-hurt/comfort-fic where Kev basically becomes Asbo's pseudo dad.
(so depressed that there's none for me to read already
What do you mean there's no fics where Kev witnesses or deals with Gog's terrifying psycho-pathological physical and coercive control over Dennis/Asbo?)

This boy did not get enough hugs in this series

I Don't Want To Rember •Kingsman Merlin•
Tumblr media
Word count: 1157
Type: Angsty fluff
Warning: Mentions of Death and grieving
Paring: Merlin × Oc (description is kept limited name can easily be changed when reading)
Summary: Maggie can't process her feelings about Merlin coming back to her
Tumblr media
Maggie was sat at the kitchen table again, it was nearly 3 am and her head was hung over a cup of coffee.
"Mag?" She looked up to see Merlin coming down the stairs of their house.
"Hey babe, I didn't mean to wake you," she smiled.
"You didn't, I woke up naturally, and realised you weren't next to me," he said.
"I just had a nightmare, don't worry about it,"
"What about?" Merlin asked sitting across from her.
"You know what it was about," she said with a heavy sigh.
"I'm alive darling," he reached for her hand but Maggie retracted her hand setting it in her lap.
"Sorry, I'm still shaking it off," she mumbled.
"I love you," he said
"Love you too,"
"Go back to bed," she said "I'll be up in a minute" she assured
Maggie never came back to bed, Merlin found her the next day on the couch asleep.
"I...I just don't know Harry, it feels like she's pulling away from me," Merlin said to Harry as they ate in his office.
"It was traumatic for her too, she watched you die, she grieved you, then she helped get you back and she helped Ginger with your surgery, she's probably still processing," Harry assured him.
"Why won't she talk to me about it?" Merlin asked.
"She doesn't talk about her feelings and she probably feels as though she shouldn't complain because you're the one who came back to life," he said.
"You make more sense than you should," Merlin said.
"I read a lot of romance books," Harry shrugged.
"You read spy novels," Merlin argued.
"I change the dust covers to spy novels," Harry said amused Merlin shook his head with a chuckle leaving to his own office.
He hadn't seen Maggie all day, she said she was too busy working vitals on Roxy and Eggsy's blood from their last mission, an undercover that went wrong and ended in both of them getting injected with a mix of poisons that they had to scramble to get an antidote to.
Maggie had been frantic figuring out the antidote as Eggsy sat holding a puke bucket as he threw up blood, Roxy held out bearly any better but she had gotten to the all-acting poison negator, all it did was slow the poison down.
But Merlin could see the file, she'd ran their blood and done every test she could on both their most recent blood samples and the ones taken when they were injected.
"She's probably working on a better and quicker antidote than what we had," Merlin mumbled. "Yeah, that's all she's doing,"
Maggie came home later than Merlin. "Hey, you hungry?" Merlin smiled.
"Not really, darling I've been working on a proper antidote for months, seriously months and nothing is working," she complained.
"Literally nothing! I can't even figure out what the poisons in that mix were, if I could do that, I could work out a mix of the antidotes for each of those poisons," she groaned as she collapsed on the couch.
"You'll figure it out my love, you always do," Merlin said kissing her cheek, Maggie smiled looking over her notes.
"Thank you, love"
"Put the notes down, they'll be there tomorrow," Merlin said later in the night Maggie sighed rubbing her eyes.
"You're right, I've got a couple theories to try in the lab tomorrow," she said placing the book down.
"Come on, to bed we go," he said holding onto her hand pulling her up off the couch.
"I love you," Maggie smiled kissing him, Merlin kissed back crowding her against the door.
He trailed his kisses down her neck, Maggie pushed away. "I. . .I can't I'm sorry," she said.
"What? What is your problem? Are you afraid to look at my scars? Disgusted? Do you think you're too good for me now? That I'm damaged goods now? Huh!" Merlin shouted.
"No! Of course not!" Maggie said quickly.
"Then look at me like I'm a person again!"
"I can't! Okay? I just can't! It's too much all I see is the view from your glasses as you exploded! How your voice just stopped! The blood on your glasses! And I had Ginger telling me we needed to continue the mission and help Harry and Eggsy! But I couldn't and then weeks later we found you and oh my god the state you were in.
I collapsed into Tequila, Then. . .Then Ginger needed help during the surgery and you were flatling and the machines were going off and Ginger was fanatically trying to get you breathing again and I. . .Froze until Harry came in to calm me down, tell me it wasn't you, it was any other agent I've performed surgery on, we had to cover your face, I could barely even function as a medic, never mind as your wife.
I sat on the floor of my surgery room just thinking, thinking, what if you died, what if you flatlined and I froze again with no one to help, what if you got better and went back into the field and you got hurt again and I couldn't do anything and every time I see those scars, It's all I think about, I can only see you nearly dead on my table, I love you but I'm scared!" She cried sat on the edge of their bed with her head in her hands.
"And I'm so selfish because I can't imagine what you're going through if I'm like this, I can't imagine what your head is like and I-I don't know how to talk about it because you don't like to talk about your emotions and I'm fine with that! Because it's always small things like Eggsy pissing you off, even when you were grieving Harry we didn't talk about it much I could deal with them, I know those emotions, I've felt them but how do I deal with this,"
Merlin knelt in front of her. "Maggie, look at me," he said gently.
"Don't act like I'm a child Hamish" She groaned.
"I'm not but I need you to look at me" he said.
Maggie rested her chin on her hands looking at him, he took her hand. "Trust me," he said gently, he moved her hand under his shirt placing it over his heart. "You can feel that right?" She nodded "I'm alive and I'm healthy and that's because of you and your amazing work, you keep each and every single Kingsman healthy and alive and I love you for that," he leaned up kissing her.
"How about this, we go to sleep, if you wake up with a nightmare, you wake me up as well and we work through it together, you're not selfish, this hurts you as much as me, I didn't suffer alone and you won't either,"
Maggie smiled kissing him "Thank you," she said gently.
They settled into bed, Maggie laid against Merlin's chest listening to his heart and it was the first time in months she'd slept soundly.

Perhaps it's just me, but does anyone else lose motivation/inspiration for writing for their muse when they find out they're in official relationships??? Totally lost it with Henry, and now it's definitely slipping with Chris!
Back to Taron I go I guess! 🙃
