okay as promised here is my tomato recipe post. i know tomato season is almost over but hopefully everyone can still make use of it. these are all from my large collection of cook's illustrated back issues. i have made all of these though! i really tried to make the text as readable as possible but i'm sorry if it isn't 😭 also i know this is not accessible for people who use screen readers and i'm sorry about that too! i just don't have time to type up all these recipes 😭😭

okay now for some dinner recipes. this following recipe for tomato tarte tatin is actually one of my all-time favorite dishes, i really look forward to making it every summer. one time i shared this recipe with a friend and they later told me it had become a household favorite that their family ended up making a bunch of times. i've also made it more than once for guests i want to impress. THIS IS A VERY GOOD RECIPE. you don't have to use plum tomatoes specifically—any medium-small variety that is firm and not too juicy will work. i actually always use juliet tomatoes.

next up is tomato cobbler! this is also very good, just imo slightly less good than the tarte tatin. the tarte tatin is like a 10/10, and this is a 9.5. it's great with fresh basil too!

if you're not in the mood to make a cobbler or tart and want something way simpler, you can whip up some pappa al pomodoro, which is extremely easy and very tasty:

finally, if you have pounds and pounds of tomatoes to use up, you can make this sauce and freeze it to get that fresh tomato flavor all year round.

this recipe uses a clever technique where you deseed the tomatoes, strain the seeds from the gel, reserve the gel, and add it back in after cooking so the sauce maintains its fresh raw summer tomato flavor. i have actually used this technique in other recipes as well. like the next time you make a tomato soup, even if you use canned tomatoes, you can throw in one fresh tomato, deseed it and add the gel at the end. it really does give a nice fresh flavor. actually, i've never done this, but it would be a good idea to freeze the tomato gel in ice cube trays so you can add it to your soups and sauces all year. just make sure you add it at the end of cooking, since the idea is for it to taste raw.

baking with lee would be really cute and also very chaotic. he'd hug you from behind as you'd mix the ingredients to make the dough for the pie crust. he'd definitely sneak tastes of the cherries you're using. lee's actually a pretty good cook and really enjoys baking. he'll be at the stove, sautéing the cherries in sugar and vanilla, while you place the crust in a pie tin. once you pour the cherry mix into the crust, he'll stick his finger in what's left over and smear it on your nose, making you gasp and do the same to him. then he'll smear it on your lips just so he has an excuse to kiss you. once the pie's done, you two clean up and enjoy it together while reading comic books or watching a movie.

laurie (little women) (apple tart) 🍎

laurie would be such a sweetheart when baking. he'd insist that he should do all the work and you shouldn't lift a finger. eventually, you convinced him that you two should do it together. you two would find yourselves goofing off rather than baking. he'd throw flour at you and you'd smear butter on the tip of his nose. you two would laugh before finally deciding to take this seriously. laurie would work on the crust and you'd sauté the apples in sugar and cinnamon. laurie would come over and stick a spoon in the gooey apple mix, giving it a try. you swear, you'd see his eyes light up. once the tart's in the oven, you two would clean up, still messing around as you'd cover each other's faces in soap suds. once the tart is baked, you both curl up on the couch with a blanket, laurie reading to you as you two enjoy your sweet creation.

elio (call me by your name) (peach cobbler w/ ice cream) 🍑

i feel like you'd be working on making peach cobbler to surprise him. but it'd be ruined once he hugs you from behind and glances over you, asking what you're making. you'd have to tell him and he'd laugh, finding it incredibly sweet that you're making a dessert for him, with his favorite fruit at that. he'd ask if he could help and you'd happily oblige. much like lee, elio's a rather talented cook, telling you the right amounts of cinnamon and sugar to use, etc. but obviously, he'd see the peaches and cut himself a few slices, snacking on them when you weren't looking. and when you'd catch him, he'd just laugh and offer you a slice, which you happily took. after letting the peaches soak and sauté, he'd help you make the crumble that goes on top. you'd feed each other pieces of it and exclaim about how good it is. you'd sprinkle it on top of the peaches and put them in the oven. i can imagine you putting on some music and you two laughing and dancing around the kitchen together. once it's done baking, elio would go get some ice cream and you two would sit on your balcony, watching the sunset while enjoying the tasty peach dessert.

yule (don't look up) (brownies) 🍫

it was your idea to bake, yule having his arms wrapped around you from behind as you'd get the ingredients together for making brownies. obviously, you two would goof around, yule sneaking chocolate chips into his mouth, or smearing some of the batter on your nose. you'd giggle and kiss his cheek as he took his turn mixing the batter. he'd probably make a joke about setting some batter aside for him to make weed brownies (pls tell me i'm not the only one who can see yule being a stoner-). while the brownies are baking and you're cleaning up, he'd splash you with water and you'd chase after him with a spoon covered in leftover batter. you're finally done cleaning and the brownies are done! you two probably sit in front of the tv, yule having you in his lap while you feast on the brownies, watching a movie together.

paul (dune) (spiced lemon turnovers) 🍋

i feel like specific fruits would be native to arrakis, specifically citrus fruits. with the use of spice in most foods, it makes a delicious combination. you'd be in the kitchen/ food storage area of the freman sietch, being tasked with preparing desserts for whatever event was going on. as you're cutting lemons, you'd hear the door creak open, turning around to see paul. he'd probably make up some excuse, saying he was looking for stilgar and got lost. he'd peek over your shoulder and ask what you're making. he'd be pretty intrigued, asking if he could help you out. once you agree, you'd have him kneed out the dough for you while you finish cutting and crushing the lemons before cooking them with sugar and spice. paul would find it odd that you're adding spice to the dessert, so you'd give him half a spoonful of the lemon filling and he'd be shocked by how good it tastes. he'd stand behind you as you show him how wrap the turnovers. you'd turn around and realize just how close he was standing, his breath hitting your cheek. he'd give you a soft smile and lean over to kiss your forehead, praising you on how talented you were in baking. you'd smile and let him try, some of them coming out great, some of them looking kinda wonky. but it was still great fun to bake with your boyfriend. once they were done, you two took them out to the other freman waiting outside. you'd tell them that paul helped you out and they wouldn't believe you. it would take forever before they'd stop teasing him about the funny looking turnovers.

wonka (wonka) (chocolate chunk cookies) 🍪

wonka was working on making cookies in the main kitchen of the factory (this takes place after the wonka movie!). you'd given him the suggestion to put his chocolate in other things, like cookies or cake. he'd decided that cookies would be rather simple....he found out quickly that they were not. he told noodle to go get you and your jaw dropped when you saw the mess: flour everywhere, sugar in his hair, a bowl of batter sitting there with a spoon in it, and wonka's chocolate wrappers strewn on the floor. you'd laugh, wetting a rag and wringing it out before going up with willy and wiping the flour and butter off of his face. you'd ask him if he needs some help, to which he'd nod, feeling a bit embarrassed. once you've laughed for a bit longer, you help him clean up the kitchen, then gather all the ingredients once again. he'd watch you with sparkling eyes as you'd pour in perfect amounts of sugar and flour and melted butter. he swore you were a magician, to which you'd laugh and agree. you'd have him try mixing the batter and chop up chunks of his chocolate, placing them into the cookie dough. making little balls of dough and placing them on a sheet tray, you'd pop them into the oven, willy standing in front of it like a child. you'd watch with him, gently playing with his hair and talking about whatever. the timer would go off, he'd get so excited as you take them out of the oven. he'd probably bite into one while it's still hot and burn himself, making you giggle a bit. once they'd officially cooled, he'd try one and tell you he should start selling your cookies in his factory. you'd put the cookies in little bags, planning to give them out to noodle and the others later.

hal (the king) (spiced rum cake) 🍰

even though you're the queen of england, you love baking. hal would tell you that the cooks could bake for you or that he'd hire a special pastry chef just for you. he didn't want to see you, his beloved, working too hard. you'd laugh and tell him you rather enjoyed it, that it helped you relax. you'd be in the kitchen, measuring out flour to make a cake. hal would be looking all over the castle for you, until he'd eventually open the kitchen door to see you with some flour on your face. you ask him if he'd want to help you out and he'd say he'll just watch....which ended up being a lie. he practically did everything for you since he was worried you'd cut yourself or burn yourself. you couldn't help but find it rather cute how your husband dotted on you like that. while making the rum soak for the cake, he'd sneak a swig, insisting that you have some too. sooner or later, you two are both a little tipsy, practically baking while drunk. luckily, you had taken the cake out before you two started drinking. he'd wrap his arms around you, pressing a few kisses to your face and mumbling about how great of a baker you are and how he loves you so much. it was cute watching him cut you a slice of the cake and feed you some, the two of you sharing soft kisses between bites. and guess what...the servants were watching from behind the door the whole time!

Random Inception Headcanon Time!

Today’s episode: Winter! Who loves the snow? Who drinks the most hot cocoa? Who bakes the best pies and cookies?

(important note: all these headcanons are non-denominational. they aren’t ’Christmas’ headcanons, just winter ones!)

Cobb is not a cold weather person. To even go out of the house at this time of year, he must be bundled up in several layers. And he grumbles and complains every second. Though in a snowball fight, there’s no one you’d want on your team more - his fort building skills are legendary. His favorite baked good? Apple pie. It’s the only thing he ever bakes. His favorite secret hot cocoa ingredient? Caramel.

Arthur gets colds easily in chilly weather, but he still prefers winter to summer. It gives him an excuse, after all, to keep the apartment warm via baking. Which he is exemplary at, of course. He doesn’t play in the snow often, but when he does, he’s the only one who can battle Cobb to a snowball fight standstill. He and Eames also love to ice skate together. Favorite baked good? Pecan pie. Favorite secret hot cocoa ingredient? Coffee.

Eames also loves baking, though he is not nearly as skilled at as his partner. Sometimes his creations work, sometimes they don’t. But they never lack a distinct flair of personality. He always tends to pack on a few extra pounds during the cold season. Comes with the territory of having a boyfriend who bakes well and often, I suppose. Eames wears it with pride though - calls it his winter weight. Do you want to build a snowman? If so, Eames is your man. Ariadne is a wizard at hot chocolate making. Literally every team member has their own preference as far as flavor combinations, and she has a unique recipe for each one. She doesn’t entirely enjoy the winter chill (being such a tiny thing, after all), but she does like the occasional skiing trip. Occasional being once in every ten years or so. Favorite baked good? Sugar cookies. The generic Pillsbury ones with the designs in the middle. Don’t tell Arthur. Favorite secret hot cocoa ingredient? Dark chocolate, especially when it’s been melted by the heat of the hot drink around it.

Yusuf prefers to stay inside, surrounded by his cats, close to the central heating unit. He does greatly enjoy knitting though, as a casual hobby. Everyone has received various hats, scarves, and mittens at some point over the years. He’d never admit this, but it always warms his heart to see his friends wearing the things he made for them. Saito went many long years avoiding traditional winter games and refreshments. Maybe because they seemed too childish for him. But, since joining this ragtag group of ne’er-do-wells, he’s come to appreciate the winter months more and more. Favorite baked good? Apple pie, especially when enjoyed in the company of the Cobbs. Robert absolutely loves all outdoor winter activities. Snowball fights, snow angels, skiing, snowboarding - you name it, he dives in headfirst with enthusiasm. 🥞 PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast?

raph likes a more heartier breakfast to keep his energy going, especially if he has to be forced into his human form during the day - it still eats at his magic no matter how little it is. he likes a nice soft omelet with maybe some ground, seasoned sausage or bacon next to it. a biscuit or a scone will be nice to him as well, heavy carbs to keep him full. he'll also have tea with to wash it down. of course going through the process of making all that food can be a little tedious, so more often than not he'll be found with a biscuit and some jam or honey to spread or dip into before he's getting to his duties.

🎂 BIRTHDAY CAKE - when is their birthday? do they like celebrating it?

birthdays are kinda obsolete?? at least to an angel as old as he is - but i celebrate his birthday on September 9th, he's a virgo. because they're obsolete to him, he doesn't really celebrate it - nor do the others really. maybe he'll get a small gift from one or two angels - or homemade crafts from his fledglings, but he doesn't really go out of his way to make it a big deal. he'd rather people not bring it up only because he isn't entirely comfortable with attention on him like that. he doesn't like being taken care of despite he needs it.

🍩 DONUT - favourite sweet treat?

gods, he's another foodie of mine. raphael has a more decadent palette. still probably not going to gravitate towards fattier things but he will try them and eat them if they're there. i feel like if anything's gonna get him, it's a good cobbler. the berries or fruits mixed in with that batter is just so fulfilling to him. it's also just?? warming to him if that makes sense. it's comforting, it warms him inside out and if it's a damn good cobbler, you will know. when he's happy with food - which doesn't take a lot on his end, his cheeks will flush a little and he won't even talk while he eats because he's just enjoying it.

now in recent more modern times, i can't say raph hasn't tried takeout, street food, fast food, all that and has enjoyed it - but he will always cook first. he has cottages, he has gardens. he has the resources to make things fresh even now. and damn is he good at cooking. there's very little at his age that gives him a hard time in the kitchen. doesn't matter if it's cooking or baking.

he's grown up on tea and water p much, so he is a little fond of warmer drinks. he loves a nice herbal tea, but as hot cocoa came around he found himself enjoying that too. he can have it with some cayenne in it, or maybe some peppermint instead depending on his mood - but he's gotta have whipped cream on top of it witch extra chocolate shaved on top.

he does eat them - again, never really been picky with any of it - but out of rule of thumb, he can habitually stray away from apples. he'll touch them and make them for your muse if they like them, but he doesn't really partake in eating them, more from heaven's influence. if he had a favorite fruit, it'd probably be pineapple or cherries. the tartness of a cherry and the variety of them are nice to both snack and bake with. pineapple because he is a fan of citrus, and it's refreshing to him. as for veggies, he likes leafy veggies?? like spinach, lettuce, it's a very nice base for him to use in cooking often and sometimes when the man just wants a quick an easy salad: clean it, throw it together with other shit.

honestly start the debate but he likes cheesecake the most lmao. raph amongst his sweet tooth has a very big palette for that sour along with some heat in his food. so cheesecake gets him a little weak tbh, put some compote or macerated fruit on there and he's down. but if you want a real cake and not a torte or a pie, however it's labeled as - a nice slice of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting will make him happy too. the warm spices and the sourness of the cream cheese just leaves him in heaven.

🍧 SHAVED ICE - do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?

idk about childhood but raphael was still pretty young at the time when he lost ipos and orobas, and he was planning on giving the boys new cloaks as they were learning under his care and going through forests to forage for herbs and take care of humans - he wanted them warm and protected against the elements. he was never really capable of giving them to the boys, so he still has them: one white and threaded with gold, the other a deeper grey threaded with silver. they were also lined with thick wool for the colder seasons as they were approaching, something he took extra care into sewing together for them to not ruin the patterns he embroidered in them. they still hang in one of his wardrobes in his chambers in the throne - no one knows they're there, and he won't ever tell anyone. he doesn't want a certain angel finding them and would wreck havoc and his own sanity if he ever found them.

idk if raph really goes into either?? he won't fight or get ready to fight if he's scared, but he won't run either. his instinct is going to protect if he's around someone, or if by himself, he'll either cover or brace himself. but he tries to assess his situations and always tries to deescalate. he did even when lucifer fell and was scared watching michael and him fight, he tried to calm them both and to stop it - and wound up being blasted by both of them and two of his wings were broken, one sprained, in the process. it's just that pacifist in him. he'd rather let something bad happen to him than to cause more of an issues for others later. he just takes it.

his raw anger. raphael has only ever been so angry in his life that it costed him: and that was ipos and orobas who were wrongly accused of sin in their young age. he had become so angry that he fought hand to hand with gabriel before he could touch orobas after orobas had pushed ipos out of heaven's gates before punishment could be dealt on his side. even being older, he was made weaker physically and was quickly held down by gabriel's angels. still angry, raphael fought against all their holds on him and dislocated his shoulder - but he never cared, he wanted to protect that boy. in the end he couldn't and had to watch his wings be ripped from his back, had to hear him scream and cry, something he never heard that boy do in all his life. the events caused him to fight with michael, they fell out for a while - raphael calling michael spineless, a coward, and he refused to follow an angel like that anymore. anything to break michael, and it did - but michael never revealed it to him, and in the end it broke raphael more. he stayed away from other angels as he healed and even a while after because he was angry, his trust was broken between two of his trusted brothers, his two angels in his care - he didn't know were alive or dead being so young. he never wanted to become so wrapped up in his anger and his wrath again, so his smile quickly became a mask for everything: his anger, his pain, his sorrow, his boredom. only he ever sees his emotions when he's alone.
