Bea and Phantom: The Stinger Incident

Hey Sparks of Hope squad, hey Phandom. So I was looking through Bea’s backstory in detail and I noticed something, a little detail that I think may have big implications, and might even help explain why Bea and the Phantom’s relationship didn’t work out....! Posted under the cut due to length and moderate spoilers. (Also shoutouts to @turqrambles​ for letting me run this by them and discuss before writing this post!)

(Ok so first of all ignore the weird cropping and bad quality on this, I got this from my stream and cropped out the goofy thing I had in the corner lol)

“A whole new generation of fans was exposed to Bea when she became a celebrity host for the annual Galactovision song contest. Unfortunately, the Phantom was her co-host. The two constantly tried to outshine each other, eventually ruining their voices.” This is what Beep-0 has to say about this illustration, and I’m sure most of us took it at face value as a depiction of that. I was like, well, kinda weird they ONLY show the Phantom clearly suffering and blowing out his voice, but I didn’t give it too much thought.

But when I revisited the image again, I noticed a couple things. First of all- that’s the Phantom’s phonograph, right? For evidence, the same type of notes are coming out of it as are coming out of his own mouth.

Now, the phonograph is one of the things he was made out of. It’s literally part of him, and in a very real way it IS his voice. Of course, it’s normally inside of him. So why would he take something so important out? Make your own fantheory- maybe it amplifies and augments his own singing (here it appears to be doubling it and sending it in a different direction). Still, he’s very protective of it and wouldn’t normally do this, but let’s say he was around someone he had come to trust, someone he felt he could be vulnerable around, someone he cared for.

So the SECOND thing I noticed, was like “aww, he’s letting Bea use her stinger as the needle for the record! That’s kinda, sweet and intimate tbh...” but then I realized, ok, that’s not how phonographs work lol (the horn wouldn’t play any sound if it wasn’t using its own needle to read the record) and then I took a closer look and I’m like oh no, her hitting the record with her stinger is a BAD THING.

Look at the little burst effect happening here, the same one coming from the Phantom’s mouth. You can imagine the record scratch sound effect. She’s hitting the record with her stinger and MESSING HIM UP.

I do NOT think this is implying he actually lost his voice because of this! Even if this record got completely scratched up, it’s still just one record and could be replaced with another. I think it’s still true they both blew their voices out by trying to outdo each other. I think this illustration is just giving us subtle evidence of one occasion where she bumped the record with her bee booty and caused him to choke/crack, in front of a vast audience. You can imagine how someone as prideful as he would react to that.

So now the question is, did Bea do this on purpose? Was she trying to mess him up in order to out-compete him? Personally, I don’t think so. I’d like to think she’s a better person than that, that she genuinely cared for him and respected him and would never humiliate him on purpose (after all, she seemed to have an angry phase when they broke up), and that she has the professional standards to not want there to be an outright mishap like this during a performance. In the illustration, it doesn’t look like she’s aware of doing it, and given how good these backstory pics are at conveying subtle detail, I think they would have made her look way more mischievous if it was intentional on her part.

So we’re left with a very unfortunate incident. The Phantom thought he could trust her with something extremely important to him, and she let him down. She probably SHOULD have been more careful and aware! On the other hand, it was a genuine accident on her part, one she probably felt super guilty about. But no matter how much she may have apologized, I think it likely that the Phantom could never fully forgive her due to his pride, and this became a seed of bitterness and loss of trust planted in their relationship.

This is my personal theory for why they broke up. Of course, there was likely more to it than that; with both of them being so competitive and sort of diva personalities, it may have been destined to never work out no matter what. But I do like this as a particular impetus for their relationship crumbling, because to me it seems very realistic, kinda tragic, and makes me mutually sympathetic to both of them. The Phantom may have dumped her in a jerky way, but a partner doing something that shatters your trust is a difficult thing to cope with, even if it wasn’t out of malice on their part.

Feel free to agree, disagree, write a fanfic, or whatever! At the very least I hope you find me pointing out the record scratch thing to be interesting and run with it in your own way!

Hi! Thanks for answering my previous question. So I'm rereading your story again and I am curious... what do Inej and Jesper think about Kaz's relationship with the darkling. What do they know? I just read the part "with kaz around there's never any shortage of good secrets." Did that refer to the kiss in the previous chapter or more Kaz's secretive nature in general? Are they worried he is getting to involved emotionally?

Of course!!!! I love any excuse to talk about my fic tbh. I am going to put this under a read more (NOT !! UNDER A POLL!!!!! THIS TIME!!) because I started talking about it and now it's long as hell ahaha.

I'm only going to halfway answer this question because even though the story is told from Kaz's perspective solely and he's incredibly unreliable, I can promise you a messy confrontation scene in the future where a lot of things that have been boiling under the surface with Inej and Jesper come to a head and we finally get a chance to hear from them.

(I know, I know, you're thinking 'what bullshit can Kaz possibly pull next that would get them to snap if they haven't already???? but it's Kaz, so...you know....)

As for the things I can talk about: Inej and Jesper are incredibly distrustful of it. The chapter after the kiss where they all meet with the Darkling catches all of them off guard when Kaz agrees to stay behind, honestly because until that moment Inej and Jesper thought they were in the loop. Last Inej knew Kaz was saying he was going to have a conversation with the Darkling confronting him about his plot to enslave Kaz for his power. And now Kaz is providing a united front with him and agreeing to speak with him alone? The look she and Jesper share is very much a 'what the fuck happened last night?' look.

Considering Kaz was the one who told Jesper to perpetuate the rumors of him sleeping with the Darkling and Kaz was upfront with both of them about playing along with having feelings for the Darkling as a manipulation tactic, he was under the impression he knew what was going on and wasn't really that worried because at this point he did trust Kaz's judgment. Even if it looked like he wasn't seeing the full picture or he suspected Kaz might be getting in over his head, his trust for Kaz and Kaz's plans still won out.

But Jesper is also dealing with having feelings for Kaz and it's not a good feeling being yanked around by them. He's already come to terms with the knowledge that Kaz is in love with Inej and it's always going to be Inej, his feelings aren't that hurt that Kaz will never be in love with him because he knows it's always going to be Inej...so when Kaz appears to be making a lot of questionable decisions toward someone who's not Inej but also not him? That's also a really terrible feeling, so it's easier for him to tell himself that anything Kaz seems to feel for the Darkling is part of some bigger plan.

At this point, after his conversation with Kaz about going along with the Darkling's plan to expand the fold in order to protect Inej, he's sort of under the impression he's continuing to play along with having feelings for the Darkling as a continued way to protect him and Inej. So again, he's okay with it but he doesn't like it.

Inej on the other hand is not jumping through quite as many hoops to try and defend Kaz in her mind. She just doesn't believe him, full stop. There's no part of her that would ever imagine Kaz and the Darkling kissed or are in any way intimate (and I think it would hurt her a lot to know that they did kiss, considering that's something she's always known was never an option for her with Kaz) but she does think he's out of his depth emotionally and that even pretending to have feelings for the Darkling was going to backfire on him.

In a way, she also sees Kaz choosing to believe the Darkling when he said he would compromise over Inej's evidence that all he wants is complete control over him as a mini betrayal. His decision to stay instead of running is another betrayal. She doesn't underestimate men like the Darkling (and it helps that like Genya she's also seen the worst sides that powerful men have to offer) and she has Kaz on less of a pedestal in terms of "our boss knows what he's doing" because she's had more opportunities to see Kaz vulnerable than Jesper has.

So she doesn't suspect they've kissed, but she does think that he's been too successful in manipulating Kaz and that it would take considerable effort and deprogramming in order to get him back. She wants to believe that Kaz was telling the truth and that he's only pretending to be loyal to the Darkling so that he can become powerful and stab him in the back like he said, but she's in "prepare for the worst, hope for the best" territory here.

As far as what both of them currently believe in regard to Kaz's current behavior and actions...well, you'll find out!

Cancer sun is very emotionally guided but tbh contrary to popular belief they can be very practical and stable. Even though they share some similarities with Pisces, both being water signs, Cancers aren’t as into fantasising or living in their heads like Pisces are.
