ur kinda glad youre not seeing what you look like at 100 years old and getting stuck that way for weeks- only Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle can be cursed to be old yet has so much rizz that she’s still badass and pulls a wizard boyfriend LMAO

so what I mean by all the above is: you’ve lived 2 decades, 1-20 are the only ages you can be

…but not in a magical world full of awesome flora and fauna, and magical creatures,

The Amazing, the All-Powerful, Awe-Inspiring Oni: Arataki Itto!

Not even his gang, or Kuki are the first to see you, nah it’s Itto himself,

he literally finds 12 yr old you just sneaking around in awe in Chinju Forest,

and needless to say ur pretty fascinated with the colors and the vibes, and it’s not like Genshin Impact existed when u were this young, ur poor younger self is just rlly paranoidly looking around

Itto is kinda a lot at first, and he was a little confused by ur constant rubbing your arms, or tapping ur fingers on stuff, (or all the stims u be doing when ur nervous) but he just took it all in stride

so Itto, after like an hour and a few well placed rocks at his face and groin by 12 yr old u who was ready to fight to the death at first, FINALLY convinced you by drawing a little picture of his house and his friends

and all that clear effort, despite the foreign world, foreign non-human guy, etc., made you warm up to him too, afterall, even 12 yr old you knew a himbo when they saw one 💪

at first he just thought you were another person who was getting powered up by that yokai he felt (he was convinced thats what you were when u weren’t physically here before, like some kind of powerful gift giving/deal making yokai)

but after he saw you shapeshift the next morning into 16 yr old you, (he lives with his grandma so ur younger self felt pretty safe staying with a himbo guy and an little grandma lady)

he was now more convinced than ever-

that you were some kind of god that’s been in hiding since the archon war (his granny has a lot of cool stories so what?! hes a very educated oni thank you very much!),

rather than a vision user, and he also thinks u being random ages is deffo a curse, and its to keep ur powerfulness limited!! - Arataki Itto, 202X

(bc younger u doesnt remember that u can upgrade ppl, or at least it takes em a learning curve bc they gotta relearn everytime)

okay but itd be so funny tho if nobody else believes that (esp the non-magical folk), bc to them, ur just like, a bunch of siblings (child, teen, adult you lmao) or a tanuki lol

he eventually gets Kuki to believe, after she also sees how you change/the aura is honestly more powerful too once she’s paying attention, like instead of like a blanket, ur like standing in front of a raging campfire

but she makes him keep it a secret

ur really vulnerable a lot of the time, so they’re both worried abt keeping u happy and safe, aw cuties <3

the gang become ur besties no matter the age, like they love mild pranks, and general chaos, u wanna explore no matter the age, and also love chaos, esp since it can be magical now (oh child you is having the time of their life when they’re around)

plus the more hands on deck, the easier it is to keep ur ass from running off as a kid (and an adult, bc omg a shiny?? a shiny crystal fly???!! lmao neurodivergent 🤝crow/raven = shiny solidarity)

honestly Itto has a blast with all versions of you, and he’s literally the best bc he’s a himbo:

so he’s fine with answering context or “obvious” questions all the time LMAO

and if he makes any conclusions abt ppl’s behavior u dont, he’ll explain pretty quick and simple and he never sees it as awkward or smth

its honestly kinda funny bc ur like 10, and just 🤨🤨🤨??? sometimes at ppl (u got better at reading ppl as u got older obv, and at english too, that doesnt help lol)

so younger u just feels safe around Itto, and so while u do get taught english (mostly by his grandma/Kuki) u also dont rlly mask,

nor do u know how to mask as well as you do in the future

so ur just running around with the gang, living ur little neurodivergent life, and anytime someone points out smth u do that might be awkward, like repeating something over and over as a stim (esp with learning english phrases/new words at times) the gang and Itto, and Kuki, are all ready to protect 💪

but most of the time what happens is- whether unintentionally or not, Itto manages to make THEM feel awkward or like they’re the ones doing something socially weird all the time 😭

just, a parent is like “this kid can’t speak English, do they even know any other language? Because all I keep hearing is them repeating that sound over and over…”

Itto is actually very respectful about you, and while it would, almost be easy bc of the age switching, for him to infantilize you, he’s really good at treating you like an equal no matter how old you are :0 :D

like a giant teddy bear older brother at times, and the guys and Kuki are all pretty good at it too

(tho dw, Kuki is doing all the emotional distress heavy lifting for all of them over your safety, esp bc when u switch at first u are VERY out of your element/disoriented bc u dont always recognize Teyvat/know less English)

Whenever people are allergic to see a mild/morally good version of the original complex morally questionable character from Danmei, I'm like "If its too vanilla or not too evil for you, blame the adaption? Not people who like it?"

They are fine with The Untamed's Wei Wuxian erasing his flaws from the novel? But when it comes to Jiang Cheng, Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu. They are not even downright evil. Just morally questionable. No, I'm not excusing their actions especially Qi Ye's Zhou Zishu. I just find it weird why they refused to acknowledge the character's soft side that actually existed in original material? I'm too jaded to expect perfect faithful cdrama adaption so I'm good as long as they get what I care about the character. To Jiang Cheng, his connection with Wei Wuxian and Jin Ling are still a big deal in The Untamed that's why I still like it. I don't really care if he's softer than the original. I don't like his new connection with Wen Qing though because guy is too aroace for me. To Wen Kexing; his hatred, his ghost valley's crimes and affection for Zhou Zishu are still there even if he gone back to the right track when he avenge his parents, reduced to shidi role and I hate his miscommunication. To Zhou Zishu; his Tian Chuang's crimes and his love for Jiuxiao are still present in Word of Honor even if its toned down. Sure, he's softer but he's still masculine in his own way. I especially like his Hobo Axu because the Tian Ya Ke ZZS is strong in that one. I'm not fond of immortal ending and WOH Zhou Zishu's naiveness toward Wen Kexing tho. They are all imperfect portrayal of my favorite characters but I still like them.

What matters to me is I can still see the fragments or small similarities that I like from their original self despite the drastic changes. I just treat it like I'm watching Disney's adaption of Grimms' Fairytales. You Yao's Lou Zhu is also like that. A morally questionable character in the novel but became a hero figure in donghua adaption. Actually everyone in You Yao novel are antiheroes, not only him lol The donghua team understand his deep connection with Zuo Yunqi so they even made sure they are reunited in the ending that's why I forgave them with the changes. Ghibli's adaption of Howl's Moving Castle is also a good example and I still like it. Tbh there's no perfect adaption and sometimes it just depends if I vibe with them or nah. Simple as that.

Look, this is the undisputed number one spot. Loki has been my ride or die for the past 14 years (!!!), my first tattoo is dedicated to him, and he’s the character that got me through the loneliest and scariest periods of my life. Loki will always be my number one, tbh.

2. Dream of the Endless (The Sandman)

Now, Dream is the character that simply bust down the doors to my heart and took residence, no questions asked. Through Dream and The Sandman fandom I was able to connect to parts of my identity I wasn’t aware of, and to make so many great friends! Dream means a lot to me (so much so that my *second* tattoo is of the dreamstone— in a grand total of two lol)

3. Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist)

Ed is the blueprint of the pissed off short king tbh. I always related to how he dealt with guilt and how driven he is, and his character arc was one of the most captivating I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience. As a 14 year old, I would for real go out in public wearing his red cloak.

4. Chrono (Chrono Crusade)

If I have unreasonable expectations of Love, Chrono is the one to blame. Throughout the entire show (and the manga, which I do feel has the better ending) his dedication and kindness to the people he loves and cares about was just incredibly captivating to a 12 year old Virgo. Real character building stuff.

5. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)

Sora had the sickest shoes and my taste for unreasonably large and perhaps sorta ugly sneakers comes from him for sure. I just love that spiky little guy.

6. Raven (Teen Titans)

Raven was honestly the first character that made me go “she’s just like me fr!” There was always something super fascinating about her, and how complex she is. It was nice seeing female characters like her and Starfire in cartoons.

7. Howl Pendragon (Howl’s Moving Castle)

I identify with Howl in many ways, but mostly in how dramatic and absolutely pathetic he is. Also I do feel like a monster sometimes and a way to visualise that is to imagine I’m covered in green slime.

8. Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club)

Ouran should have been my queer awakening, but I think I was too young to realise I was what a large part of my identity was unlocked through this character. Main girlie with a drag queen dad that doesn’t bow to gender norms and just , wants to be left alone please leave her alone she doesn’t want all the trouble come on—

9. Chihiro (Spirited Away)

She was a child, in a shitty situation, learning to find strength within herself to keep going, to trust her instincts, to keep surviving. She means so much to me!

10. Nick Nelson (Heartstopper)

Nick is just oddkdkdkdkdkddkfo he’s allowed me to have good feelings about bisexuality!!! About my teenage bi experience!!! The whole of Heartstopper, really, but Nick’s kindness and his whole journey of self discovery helped heal something in me. Good retriever boyfriends for the win!

Gun to my head and I forced myself to update and make a top 10 favourite books. I am reserving the same place for the ones that are part of the same series or by the same author.

1 - Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies by Robin Hobb

No brainer. Hard to beat at this point.

2 - Carpe Jugulum and Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

I am surprised this is as high tbh. BUT, every time I remember the characters, certain scenes and the cozy feelings the more this feels right. Maybe I've changed once more as a reader. I used to prefer darker stories and now I seem to gravitate towards tales of kindness and that provide a comforting feeling (without going overboard with it).

3 - Dawn and Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

Well, when it comes to darkness, this is my kind of book. Very dark, but impactful and emotional stories.

4 - Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

Honestly, not much happens in this book and I can't really express all the reasons why it worked so well to me like it did. It's just a tale about empathy and kindness with sad moments again.

5 - Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

When it comes to fun books, this is my jam. Short, funny and has likeable characters.

6 - Age of Madness trilogy by Joe Abercrombie

Since I reread the books in the first trilogy and I am taking a long ass time to finish my reread of the first one, I can confidently say I prefer these books to the First Law trilogy (even if my favourite character is in that one). Honestly, I don't think grimdark is my genre and there is no other author I would read in there besides this one.

7 - Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

Another one that surprises me that is in the tip 10 and this damn high at that! I blame the nostalgic Shaman King feelings, but also it made me see that urban fantasy can work for me sometimes.

8 - Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura

Sad moments - check; friendship and kindness - check; provides cozy comforting feelings - check. I think this is my new brand of books now.

9 - The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, The Changeling Sea and Winter Rose by Patricia A. McKillip

This might be higher when I reread but I must say Beasts of Eld didn't impact me as much on my reread as it did the first time... I don't know if it's influence of my recent disappointments with the author's works or if these 3 books just happened to be the right books at the right time.

10 - The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

I keep forgetting the names of the characters, but I remember the cozy feelings.

Of course my top might change as I reread old favourites. These are all more or less recent reads, which might be why they were picked. I need to reread stuff like Frankenstein and The Picture of Dorian Gray to see if they still make part of the top 10. Right now, in this moment, this is how I feel about it. Tomorrow, who knows?

WHATS HAPPENING!  [That was the King.  The current plotline is that the King is demanding Howl (as Howl, as Jenkins, and as Pendragon) report for, essentially, a magical draft to fight in the war.  (This is magical realism, so magic is kinda commonplace.)  The first version of the King has been revealed to be Howl trying to bluff his way out of the war without breaking his oath to report when needed.  This got broken because a) she knew who he was already but b) the real King walked in and was like.  Hey.  Good?]  Yes! 🙂 thank you lool!

Wench: I mean, I think her personality was just… shifting. She'd lost the demon, so she wasn't as corrupted by power, but she was still questing for Howl's heart. I do think that her proximity to power restored her a bit to her earlier self (and when she was smoking the cigar she apparently got from Suliman), which is why you noticed her being a bit more her at times when she was near Howl… but it's all within her normal character

Jezebel: Ok fair!

Wench: As for the things I was saying I'd explain now, btw... They keep foreshadowing the reveal about his heart.  Like, there are blatant bits (e.g. her earlier note saying something along the lines of "You who swallowed a falling star, o' heartless man, your heart shall soon be mine.")  But there were smaller things.  Like the Witch being so focused on Calcifer, talking so regularly about "oh, what a pretty fire."  I'm sure it was partly because the fire *was* pretty, but when you know that she was questing for Howl's heart, it's got a second layer.

Jezebel: Ooooo! I thought it was just her being old and senile ☠️

Wench: Also, the heart reveal renders other things increasingly significant too.  Like the metaphors of the Witch trying to get at his heart, and it burning her when she tried... something something she tried to steal his heart and control it but it didn't work, whereas Sophie had been connecting with it from the very beginning. Or him telling Sophie that the way to get HIS RING to work and lead her home was to call out to Calcifer with her heart... Which was his heart... Connect the dots :)

Jezebel: Oooooooooh 💕💕💕🥺🥺

Wench: Also, an interesting thing... Like I said, the book is quite different.  It's one of the few adaptations, actually, that changes A Bunch about the original story but I just... can't be that mad about it.  Because the story isn't the same, but it's awesome anyway.  

Jezebel: Ooooh? Interesting :)

Wench: Yup!  And one such example is that they explicitly state what's going on with Sophie.  Sophie isn't just this ordinary girl. Or, well... She is, but she isn't.  She was a hatter, like in the film, and she usually talked to the hats.  It's explained that she would tell them what their owners would be like as she made them.  (One example is when she tells a hat that its owner would have a heart of gold and someone would fall in love with them for it)

Jezebel: That’s adorable thoooo

Wench: And whatever she said would come true.  But she was also highly determined to be the Eldest Daughter. Which means she'd stay at home, tend to the business, never ever ever seek any adventure, etc.  So she has this magic... and nonetheless sets about using it to have nothing happen to her ever, quite without knowing it.

Jezebel: Ack!  So the exact thing she doesn’t want is exactly what happens ☠️☠️🤣🤣

Wench: Precisely!  And that magic is the explanation for a lot of what goes on in the story.  It's why the scarecrow comes to life, for example.  And it's also the reason she's able to separate Howl/Calcifer without either dying.  In the book, she asks if she can separate them and Calcifer says that he thinks he'd die if anyone else did it, but he knows she's talked life into things before so, if anyone could do it, she could.  And she outright says "Have another thousand years" before pinching them apart so Calcifer will survive.

Jezebel: So the scarecrow’s not a prince in the book?

Wench: I don’t think so.  The scarecrow and the prince are two separate entities, and the prince has a far more gruesome fate.  I don’t fully remember enough to say more, but I’m pretty sure they’re separate.  She talks them both to life, though, so in that sense, it kinda works.

Jezebel: Ooooop! Well damn! I see!  Oh, and, as for endpoint… Ummmmm I have forgotten how to endpoint.  Halp!

Wench: Give thoughts.  Did you like it?

Jezebel: Ummm I LOVED it.   It was so gooooood!

Wench: Aight… Elaborate on that :) 

Jezebel: And cute and confusing sometimes but also sad and then happy.  Also why was he a bird man?  I think I missed that part

Wench: It was just one of his spells.  It helped him fight the largely air-based battle.  But it was an anthropomorphic spell, and he ran the risk of not recalling how to switch back each time he did it

Jezebel: Ohhhhh.  Ummmm… Did it ever explain Sophie’s cure being broken or was it ever broken?

Wench: Ah, right, so… complicated.  First off: the Witch's deal with the demon thing was basicallyyyyy that she got the power to cast curses but couldn't uncurse them.  Or at least, I think that's it, and that's how I've interpreted it.  So she couldn't change Sophie back.  I thinkkk, in large part, Sophie was eventually talking herself into the curse.  Like I said --- and as she's shown in the movie --- she's very doubtful and not-confident throughout the story… And she also had this magical power that let her control reality, within reason.  So, basically, she was expecting herself to be an old woman, and thus she was.  That's why she was young whenever she wasn't consciously focused on the fact that "oh, yeah, I'm old" (e.g. while she was asleep, when she'd woken up but was more focused on what was going on with Howl and his nest than what he was doing, etc).  And whenever she feels more confident/less like she's not worth much, the spell wanes further.  So, whenever the Markl calls her "family," whenever she's dwelling on love for Howl, etc.  And then, at the end, she's still got the silver hair because technically she's still cursed (or, at least, that's how I interpret it), but she's confident in who she is/where she's going/who she's with, so she's perpetually talking herself out of the curse.

Jezebel: Ahhh! Ok that makes sense! I was like…. Have they forgotten ma’am is cursed ☠️🤣

Wench: Also, bit of fun fact, parallel, etc…  Howl tells her, at the end, that her hair is like starlight.  And Calcifer was a falling star who was holding custody of his heart.  So Sophie at the end of the movie is the new bearer of his heart  😭

If Kvothe and Denna lived in contemporary era, what type of media (books, music...) do you think they'd like?

I had so much written. . . and then I accidentally hit reload  . . .why am I like this?

Well they are both pretty hipster-y, with their knowledge of obscure plays in their second meeting. Which, like, who can blame them, I have hipster tendencies as well. 

Kvothe, plays: 

Kvothe is obviously a theater nerd. 

He stans Sondheim (he loves those impossibly hard musical arrangements)

he had a Hamilton phase (he’s a nerd about storytelling ofc he loves it) (and loved In the Heights when it first came out, it reminds him of his family)

and Spring Awakening (angry teenagers who want to KNOW things and be treated with RESPECT, heck yeah, he loves that show)

 He loves Shakespeare but tbh, half the reason he loves it is because all his work in in public domain and therefore free to use (Macbeth is his favorite but he’ll pretend it’s something more obscure like Winter’s Tale or something) 

Denna, plays: 

She knows less about musical theater culture, so a little less Pretentious in her likes 

Chicago (because she loves seeing women be like That) (also that aesthetic is great) 

Waitress (she really relates to Jenna and always wants to bake after listening to it)

And she has a soft spot for Grease because she wants to play Rizzo (imagine Denna singing There are Worse Things I Could Do) (is your mind blown?) 

Kvothe, tv shows: 

crazy ex girlfriend (cause this is my blog and I make the rules) (also Kvothe has started every single musical show ever cause he’s a nerd) (and this is his favorite) (because obvs) (he worries about how much he relates to Rebecca) 

jane the virgin (he and sim and wil watched the pilot to be ironic and get drunk but then became emotionally invested and the storytelling is just,,, v good)

She also watches crazy ex gf (look, the themes of the show line up really well with kkc) (i promise!!) (rebecca’s search to be happy is very moving for denna) 

leverage!!!! (she loves seeing competent people destroy people who abuse power) 

I also think she watches a lot of older sitcoms like Cheers because they are predictable and comforting 

oh and jessica jones makes her very emotional but she absolutely loves it

I feel like we would have very different taste in books esp based on the fact that pat and i have like barely any overlapping books in our goodreads

Oh believe me, they treat me as nicely as they can. I can't really complain about anything, because they are attentive (more than my friends' parents, at least). Despite everything, they always provided everything I needed and more, honest, and they are fun people. It's just, they have untreated mental illnesses and unresolved trauma. Both went to therapy for one reason or another, but they should've stayed in therapy ngl. And they don't see mental illnesses, like, they don't. they don't even try to humor me a little, never. because nobody ever humoured them. both come from shit situations and lacked parental love (my mom's dad died when she was 9 and he was the only loving future granparent. her mom? she's ok. dad's? i hope they'll fucking die soon). I love my parents so much but i wish they'd listen andntrust me more. idk if it's because they know my head's slow or because they see me as a kid or both, and while they'd be right on the former, i wish they'd show me that they trust me a tiny bit. Still, i have plenty of things and food and stuff and gifts, even little things like "i know you like this so i got it for you" or "i baked your fav cake" or "look at this pretty bird i saw at work" or when they listen to my eternal rambling without telling me i am annoying or that i talk too much. and they are fun and kind, so i'm fine, more than that. I'm also very bad at arguments bc i always either shut down or physically leave so, yeah, unreliable narrator. I'm aware i don't handle shit well. Today mom told me to go slower bc the road was full of potholes and my car is, well, small and not exactly the suv kind of car, and i got so fucking angry as if she'd told me to go die in a ditch or idk. and i realised it later. idk man i think that my parents are adorable and the more i grow up the more i realise i kinda ruined their lives and made it way harder than intended to be. and i was even wanted, like, no joke. idk. they deserved better but at least they have my sister. (Oh fuck i'm crying ok.) I just wish they'd consider that i'm delicate. I just wish they'd pick their words better. And yes i'm so fucking annoying to be with, i need too much, i need people to be extra delicate because i am frail as fuck and i'm aware of that. nobody ever has ever been delicate though, nobody. Either to make me man up or idk. i Bc if you ask someone to be kind they're going to treat you like shit, so i always acted tough irl with everyone. the truth? Honestly i just want to fucking die in my sleep and make everyone happier. the one time i asked someone to lay off my group of friends collectively revolted against me so yknow i'm never going to do it again, it's too hard for someone like me to find new friends tbh. but it's really not entirely my parents' fault if i get angry all the time, i'm a piece of shit, dude. 80% of the times, the blame is on me, i say this now that i am lucid. those 20% of the times are tough but the rest is entirely on me. i am unbearable and unlikable and i say this as someone who likes to be liked. not pulling that "idc what people think shit", i care a lot, i wish everyone found me nice. again 20/80. can't really blame them for slipping sometimes. they're supportive and caring, and that's more than i deserve. essay's over, back to howl's moving castle, i guess.
