Oh I’m very very interested in your nonfiction book recs 👀
EDIT: ykw I'm gonna make this a little more organized
I listed a bunch in this post (the last question) but lemme see if I have any additions because I know I was kinda trying to keep it short when I wrote that. (But that being said, that post is the Top Faves Of All Time, so go for those first.)
Freaky medical shit I also liked:
The Fever: How Malaria Has Ruled Humankind for 500,000 Years by Sonia Shah
The Barbary Plague: The Black Death in Victorian San Francisco by Marilyn Chase (I just read this a few weeks ago and OOUUUGGHHHHHH IT'S LITERALLY JUST. LIKE THE RESPONSE TO COVID.)
The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic—and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson
Political shit I also liked:
Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century edited by Alice Wong
The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide by Steven W. Thrasher
Immigrants, Evangelicals, and Politics in an Era of Demographic Change by Janelle S. Wong
History I also liked:
Triangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von Drehle
The Hamlet Fire: A Tragic Story of Cheap Food, Cheap Government, and Cheap Lives by Bryant Simon (between those two you can tell I was on a bit of a "workplace tragedies caused by lax regulations and bad management" kick)
The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore (I think everyone knows about this book, including it for completeness)
Promised the Moon: The Untold Story Of The First Women In The Space Race by Stephanie Nolen
The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison by Hugh Ryan
Butts: A Backstory by Heather Radke (this is nowhere near as fun and cute as you'd assume from the title)
Memoirs I also liked:
The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets, and Stolen Identity by Axton Betz-Hamilton (I read this before I really got into nonfiction and it was WILD, I tell people about it all the time)
The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui (this one is a graphic not-novel-I-guess-memoir)
Know My Name by Chanel Miller
Other:
Playing Dead: A Journey Through the World of Death Fraud by Elizabeth Greenwood
A False Report: A True Story of Rape in America by Ken Armstrong, T. Christian Miller
Lost Feast: Culinary Extinction and the Future of Food by Lenore Newman
It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror by Joe Vallese
AND here are a few on my TBR that I'm really excited for! I decided not to categorize them because they're almost all history:
Silk and Potatoes: Contemporary Arthurian Fantasy by Adam Roberts
Refusing Compulsory Sexuality: A Black Asexual Lens on Our Sex-Obsessed Culture by Sherronda J. Brown
All the Young Men by Ruth Coker Burks
The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara by David I. Kertzer (I am actually partway through this right now but in a bit of a dry/confusing section)
The Broadcast 41: Women and the Anti-Communist Blacklist by Carol A. Stabile
The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History by Kassia St Clair
A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II by Sonia Purnell (have just barely started this)
Time to Dance, a Time to Die: The Extraordinary Story of the Dancing Plague of 1518 by John Waller
The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyŏng: The Autobiographical Writings of a Crown Princess of Eighteenth-Century Korea by Lady Hyegyeong
Miss Major Speaks: The Life and Times of a Black Trans Revolutionary by Miss Major Griffin-Gracy
Too Hot to Touch: The Problem of High-Level Nuclear Waste by William M. Alley, Rosemarie Alley (I'm in the middle of this but it's surprisingly, um. not exciting.)
Going Postal: Rage, Murder, and Rebellion: From Reagan's Workplaces to Clinton's Columbine and Beyond by Mark Ames
Pressure Cooker: Why Home Cooking Won't Solve Our Problems and What We Can Do About It by Joslyn Brenton, Sinikka Elliott, Sarah Bowen
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel
Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years Women, Cloth, and Society in Early Times by Elizabeth Wayland Barber
Medieval Gentlewoman: Life in a Gentry Household in the Later Middle Ages by Ffiona Swabey
Hitler's First Victims: The Beginning of the Holocaust and One Man's Fight to End It by Timothy W. Ryback
I am soso normal and have very normal interests that are not at all grim :)

6 and 8 for your Spotify wrapped? Hope your day is lovely! 💕
sorry im answering this so late aaa, ty for asking!
6) Cave In by Margaux
oh i love this song. much slower than most of my music but i love the build up and the bass goes crazy fucking insane. like most of the top music on my spotify wrapped it was on a playlist for my writing - this one was from the Chapel playlist to add some kinda spooky atmosphere. this song is also really important bc one of my loves showed it to me (hi lily!) so i associate this song with her <3
8) THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS by Black Dresses
listened to this a LOT at the start of the year - not so much later but holy shit its so good. this one was on the chew toy playlist for that feeling of being used and abused and angry and destructive and confident and queer. i love the fucking crunchy percussive synths, this song feels like a jar of teeth. best part is the part starting with "everything is movement", its really fun to sing

ooh, 9 and 12 for the end of year book asks? hope your day is a good one today! <3
9. What book(s) had the biggest influence over your life this year?
I Have Nearly Read Through Almost All Of The Vorkosigan Saga Three Separate Times This Year (I do not actually recommend this exercise) (I will probably finish the third readthrough before the year ends) (help)
I've also been accosting people to tell them about stuff I learned in How to Hide an Empire by Daniel Immerwahr (VERY RELEVANT RIGHT NOW).
And sorry I physically can't shut up about To Shape A Dragon's Breath but it's so good IT'S SO GOOD!!! it did not have an influence over me I am the influence here. by which I mean influencer. by which I mean I am trying to force everyone I know to read this book.
12. Did any book inspire you to create?
The Golden Thread by Kassia St. Clair got me thinking about a new angle for something I've been working on!
My day has been hectic but in a neutral way! Annoying stuff happened but in a way that was kind of funny. I hope yours is good, too.

24 Contraption
First I wanted to draw Navani and an ardent nerding out over constructing a fabrial, but then I felt so tired that it became Kaladin instead. He needs sleep, I need sleep. Let’s all get some sleep.
[ID: illustration of Kaladin, a tired-looking man holding his arm up in front of his face. His sleeve is cuffed to show he is wearing a thick glove that has a fabrial built into it. Kaladin has brown skin, intense eye bags, forehead glyphs, and black hair in a messy bun. Syl, a little blue spren, sits on his shoulder. He wears cold-weather gear and a pack. End ID] thanks for the ID @tempestclerics 💕

Happy sleepover Saturday!! How’s ur day been? My roommate and I have been enjoying Chinese lays from the Asian grocery, which include such flavors as cucumber and Mexican tomato (???), highly recommend trying at least for the novelty of you can find them. Are there any funky flavors that you love that other ppl might be skeptical abt? Also I hope you’re having a lovely one 💕
omg i love checking out chip flavors from other countries when i travel...the notable lays flavors i've had from past few years include olive oil from spain, "mexican" from israel (just kinda vaguely chili flavored?) and Texas Grilled BBQ from china. i ought to find an asian grocery near me and do an Interesting Chip Flavor Taste Test at some point cause that sounds like so much fun
anyway the one "weird" flavor combo that i think is genuinely good but it confused/disturbs people when i tell them about it is balsamic vinegar on ice cream. specifically, good high quality vanilla ice cream and the best aged balsamic vinegar you can reasonably afford, not to be an annoying pretentious foodie but these are two ingredients where quality Really matters imo. a really good aged balsamic is almost more sweet than it is sour, and it's got a wonderful complex depth of flavor and a thick syrupy consistency, so it makes for a shockingly good ice cream topping. also goes well with fruits like peaches and strawberries. i highly recommend giving it a try if you're curious!

Tag game! Tag nine people you would like to know better. i was tagged by @stone-stars, thanks Han!!
Last song: “April Sky” by Ten Towers. a good reminder that there’s no need to rush
Favourite colour: a warm muted purple or mauve. second favorite is sunny yellow!
Currently watching: fantasy high: junior year and dungeon meshi. a little bit of leverage and rewatching the untamed when i want something familiar.
Sweet/savory/spicy: sweet first and foremost, but savory is also very good.
Relationship status: single and content (much happier since figuring out that I’m aro.)
Current obsession: Baldur's Gate 3, the Strixhaven 5e game I play in, and naddpod (my beloved evergreen obsession.)
Last thing you googled: “monkey man release date USA” (my friend and I were trying to figure out showtimes for our local theater, whose website can be funky)
