Campanile giganteum is a now extinct species of exceptionally large sea snail which lived throughout much of the worlds oceans, particularly the Tethys Sea, from the Ypresian to the Bartonian of the Eocene some 56 to 38 million years ago. The first remains consisting of a near complete shell were named and described by French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, chevalier de Lamarck in 1804. Since then hundreds of campanile giganteum remains have been recovered from Spain, England, Crotia, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan and in particular the Paris Basin region of France especially Cave aux Coquillages (The Cave of Shells). Campanile giganteum is primarily known from its distinctive elongate conical shell, of which there are intact specimens ranging from 16 to 35 inches (40 to 90cms), with some partial specimens indicating they might have gotten upwards of 47 inches (120cms). Not even factoring in the soft tissue body, these shells alone mark campanile giganteum amongst the largest shelled gastropods to ever live. In life campanile giganteum would have inhabited shallow seas and warm coastal waters feeding upon algae, sea weed, and other aquatic plants.

Hemingwaya sarissa here was one of the earliest known billfish, related to modern sailfish and marlin. Living during the late Paleocene, about 58 million years ago, it inhabited the area around what is now Turkmenistan, in the warm shallow waters of the western Tethys Sea that covered much of central Asia at the time.
It was rather small compared to its modern relatives, just 30-40cm in length (~1'-1'4"), with a long streamlined body armored with six rows of scutes. Its slender snout was lined with tiny teeth, and both its first dorsal fin and first anal fin were tall and elongated.
It probably wasn't a very active swimmer, instead hovering near the surface and catching smaller prey with quick bursts of speed.

In the "Things You Stumble Upon During research" dep't: the Herripedia
Plainly one of those Labor of Love sites. And from the looks of it, full of unexpected felicities. From a recent entry:
It’s quite possible, Shakespeare’s, Jonson’s and Nashe’s extensive 1590s use of the Red Herring Joke drew on the hareng saur martyrdom joke at the heart of Saint Hareng. It’s tempting, in particular, to imagine Thomas Nashe coming across a copy in the library of Lord Strange, when he wrote The Choise of Valentines or the Merie Ballad of Nash his Dildo.
Looking forward to exploring this in way more detail. :)

"Notable predecessors of the Raven are Lucien, who was the first Raven, and Aristeas of Marmora, Jessamy, Francois, Jehuda, Vivien, Ming-Ti, Dechtire, and Hatshepsut. After Matthew, Daniel enlists Tethys, a deep-sea creature who had dreamed of the surface world,to serve him as a White Raven."
Wait, wait, wait, back up.. Hatshepsut. THE Hatshepsut! Egyptian female Pharoah BAMF. What the flip did that relationship play like?!
Dream: Hatshepsut tell Lucienne...
Hatshepsut: You may address me as Your Majesty or Ruler of Rulers.
Dream: I am your Master..
Hatshepsut: I've felled lesser men then you, you stroppy little sand kitten!
Dream: You will address me with respect!
Hatshepsut: You'll earn it you scant shadow of an obelisk.
Dream:.... Would the Foremost of Noble Ladies be inclined to deliver a message to Lucienne?
Hatshepsut: With greatest possible respects, from one monarch to another... Go f**K yourself... Sir.
Can we get her out of the Raven retirement home to be Hob's raven? The actual savagery of that tag team would be beyond the realms of brilliant!
Dream: Hob, my guiding light. I know I said you could choose any raven. But must it be that one?
Hob: Are you joking Dream, she's a feminist icon. A wonder of her times. It's truly my privilege and honour!
Hatshepsut: Thank you for your humbling words most kind and wise love of the Dream King.
Dream: Greetings Hatshepsut
Hatshepsut: If it isn't the very essence of Ras rays himself! Descended from on high to illuminate my life once more with his bright and glorious disposition.
Dream: (Looks at Hob) Are you smirking?
Hob: (Blatantly smirking) You wound me love. Ofcourse not.
Hatshepsut: (Identical smirk in Egyptian girl boss raven.)

Poseidon x Amphitrite! Reader 🔱x🦈
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
( ⚠️Warnings: angst to comfort, self destructive behavior, mythology Poseidon,)
*•~
A story where you’re Amphitrite, Oceanus’s eldest daughter. However you unfortunately have to seal your fate with a certain sea god….
Tumblr media
Amphitrite, Oceanus’ eldest and powerful daughter. You had existed before even Zeus himself was born and you’re awfully good friends with the greek god of the Underworld himself. As you are older than most deities you have had a good relationship with the elder deities. A lot of deities during the centuries wanted to be with you or marry you. However none of them even peeked your interest nor had your father approval, as both you and your father knew that you had to marry a certain man. Did you like the thought of that? No. But you had to. Because it was your duty as the eldest.
You were in your room brushing your hair when a maid came in to tell you that your father requested to see you. When you arrived you had noticed the atmosphere was thick and that it must be something very serious so you took a a seat and waited for your father to speak about the matter.
‘Daughter, I have called you here because i want you to prepare a ball for about 3 months from now.’ Your father stated as he looked at you from his throne.
‘I see, May i ask for who we are having this ball?’ You asked him as you knew that he gave you a lot of time which meant that it must be for someone important.
‘We are going to have a important guest.’ He replied. You looked at him with a serious expression. If this guest is so important it could be 3 options one, a very important deity. Two, a new sea god or three it could be him. However you had your hopes on the first two.
‘Alright, then i’ll dismis myself to my room.’ You said but before you could leave you were stopped by your father. You had not moved a inch and kept still as you felt strong arms wrapped around you from behind.
‘Please take care.’ He said as he hugged you. You looked back at him and hugged him tightly. You knew that those words meant that he was going to be here and that you might marry him. Your father told you that those 3 months was the longest he could get before he would come. You told your father that you’d be alright and dismissed yourself as you were getting emotional.
Back in your room you decided to take a bath and think about some things. You knew that he would come sooner or later…yet you found yourself still uncomfortable at the idea of him actually being here. Why did it have to be now? You understand that you have to be the one that marries him because you otherwise had to remain a virgin but what if you later wanted to get married if have kids? What if you dislike being his wife? You calmly told yourself to just think rational. You knew you were strong, and you won’t let it get to you. You’ll survive this.
🫧🐠 ~3 months later~ 🫧🐠
You had come to terms with things…or so you liked to believe. The ball was okay. Ofcourse you received a lot of compliments for the decorating and preparations. Both Oceanus and Tethys were in front of the castle to welcome the guest. You on the other hand made sure your sisters were ready for the ball as you went over everything just once more to check if everything was perfect. A horn was blown to give off that the special guest had arrived.
You had met Hades half trough the ball and talked to him about the latest of things as he was a very close friend of you since forever. He even told you that he had a crush on a special goddess he saw when he once visited the mortal realm. You had began to like a ball bit by bit as Hades was there by your side the entire time. Little did you know that a pair of blue eyes had been staring at you the entire time . You’re laugh and beautiful dress were hard to miss. Ofcourse he had the attention of all your sisters but that didn’t matter because he had already decided that he wanted you. Not only was he annoyed by your sisters gushing over him, he hated that you were close to his brother. Why were you so close to him? Why are you there laughing with him when you should be with him instead? There were a million questions popping into his head until it hit him. Why was he so fixated in you? Did you put something in his drink? Why is his heart beating so fast by even the sight of you? What the hell was happening with him?! He didn’t know why or how he was feeling this way but boy did he hate it. A snarl was spread across his face as his eyes narrowed at the sight of his brother and you laughing. It got so bad that that the glass of wine in his hand shattered. Soon all your sisters took a step back as the glass shards fell to the ground. You didn’t even bother to look back as you were nit interested in this guest whatsoever.
‘Is everything alright Poseidon?’ Tethys asked him as she was pretty calm about the whole situation. She soon noticed the glare Poseidon had on his face and followed his eyes.
‘You have made up your mind I see.’ Tethys spoke with a smirk was on her face as she seemed to enjoy Poseidon’s jealousy. Poseidon on the other hand had not said anything at all as he was to busy stating at you and his brother.
‘That is my eldest daughter, Amphitrite. Shall I call her over for you?’ Tethys didn’t even wait as Poseidon watched her walk over to you and his brother. Soon you were walking towards him and actually standing in front of him. He felt weird. And not in a good way. Poseidon’s eyes could only narrow as his brows furrowed together.
‘I heard you had requested to see me.’ You said uninterested as you gave him the same look he gave you. Cold and apathetic.
‘You.’ Poseidon said in a booming voice which made everyone take a few steps back…except for you. You still remained in front of him with that cold and apathetic look.
‘Yes, me. What is it that you want from me?’ You asked nonchalantly as there were a few gasps and a wheeze from Hades who found this whole situation amusing. Poseidon glanced at his brother and then back at you. He looked at you like he was inspecting you, looking carefully at your features. You could feel his eyes wandering over you but you weren’t going to let something as trivial as that scare you. He stopped when he reached your hair. Your hair was interesting. It presented the waves as it looked like it was streaming. He soon turned away and walked over to your parents as the crowd themselves also began to go back to talking. You just raised a brow and thought nothing of it as Hades once again walked up you.
After the partly you had said goodbye to Hades and went outside to get some fresh air. You had begun to walk and were quite far from the castle. You sighed and sat down on a rock as your eyes had caught the attention of some jellyfishes. You sighed again but this time with a smile as some if the fishies had started to swarm towards you. You didn’t mind one but that they cuddled against you as it tickled a bit. After a while you decided to go to the beach and lok at the sunset. However when you were finally getting comfortable you noticed a figure standing behind you and did not bother to turn around.
‘Do you have any business with me?’ You asked coldly now turning to face him. ‘Poseidon.’ Poseidon looked at you with his cold and emotionless eyes as he grabbed your wrist and tried pulling you closer. Unfortunately for him you had already grabbed his wrist with your other hand and flipped him over. Poseidon was now staring at you with his vision upside down. Not only were you treating him as a lesser, you also just floored him. The audacity. Poseidon thought to himself…yet he could not help being a bit amused by you. No one would even dare to do this to him. So why shouldn’t he just toy with you a little longer? Poseidon let out a soft chuckle as he got up and dusted himself off.
‘You’re very strong for someone who has no choice in life.’ Poseidon said to you. Even though his voice was serious you knew he was trying to mock you for not having a choice in marriage. What pissed you off more was that he had a twisted smile on his face.
‘And you’re pretty weak for a god.’ You said back at him in the same mocking manner as you also had a smile on your face. Poseidon could only smirk even more as he stepped closer to you.
‘Then you should get used to it. Wife.’ The moment he said that last words your face returned to it stoic self. You went quiet and looked at him as he looked at you back. Only this time it was not mockery but…love?
Unfortunately you were to angry to notice it and it also didn’t help that you had a short temper when it came to him. Blinded by rage you had failed to notice that there was a large body of water starting to rise. Poseidon seemed to find this very amusing as he had never seen any sea god do this before. The large body of water had taken a form of your father, Oceanus with tentacles coming from the back and claws attached to the end. Poseidon felt a different emotion. It wasn’t like when he first saw you or heard you laugh. It was something different…fear. You soon realized what you were doing as the large body of water lost its form and crashed into the sea. You only looked at Poseidon with eyes that looked like they killed him, skinned them, cut them, put them box and threw them in the sea. Poseidon demeanor did not change on the outside but he seemed to love that you put some fear into him. You made your way back into the sea leaving him behind standing in the beach with a smile of victory.
‘She didn’t leave because she lost. She left because she would’ve teared you apart.’ A voice said as Poseidon could hear the scrunch of the footsteps against the sand.
‘Is that so? Hades.’ Poseidon said not turning as he was still facing the direction where you were standing. Hades knows his brother very well. Even though he was just gazing at were you just stood he could see the hints of pink on his cheeks. Hades could only wonder if Poseidon was a sadist or a delusional man.
Back at the castle you made your way to the throne room and barged in. Both your mother and father looked at you in shock when they saw the fury on your face. You took deep breathes to calm yourself as your once furrowed brown were now tilted upwards.
‘Why did you agree?..’ you asked them in a soft voice. Both your parents looked at you with guilt in their eyes as they knew you had not wanted this. Neither of them had the heart to tell you that the wedding was soon yet you already figured as Poseidon had called you his wife.
Defeated you turned your back against them and walked away. In the halls you had your sisters who congratulated you and some of then said they wished they married him while others were a bit sad that they hadn’t been chosen. One of them even revealed that the wedding was in 2 days. As soon as you heard that you barged into your room and locked the door. You sat against the bed and thought for a moment until you started crying. You didn’t know what to do. You know you have to. You know they all expect you to. You know that you have bo right to complain. You thought you were ready to face it….Yet here you are crying. The only option is to tun away and never look back. Your family won’t be sad because they have lots of sisters right?…..No. You will not let him bring you down. You have lived for centuries while he is practically a fetus compared to you. You’re not going to let a doodoo ass nobody let you feel this way….

Note: I made the version where Amphy! Reader was Oceanus’ daughter to make her more powerful than Poseidon. I also made Hades good friends with Amphy! Reader because i don’t like the dynamic where Hades would blindly justify Poseidon because that does not sound very logical to me.
Also i’ll make a pt2 cus idk if it would be too much.

But now we must know, what are your headcanons for the first generation of Gods siblings? Personally? Zeus isn’t allowed to swim with Poseidon cause they always fight and Zeus goes toaster in bathtub mode where he’s the toaster.
I haven't considered Zeus doing the "toaster in bathtub" thing. Thank you Anon, I will put this into my HC list :3333
Now on with the first-generation Olympians (it's gonna be a long ride, so strap on!)
Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon were swallowed when they were young kids/nearing adolescence, not newborn babies. I want Kronos and Rhea's family to have some years happiness together before the prophecy ruin them all.
Out of the Big Six, Demeter and Hades look the most alike to Kronos (unrelated note: Persephone looks the most alike to Kronos out of the 2nd gen)
Demeter is Kronos' favorite child because she shares his power over agriculture. Kronos has even planned her future to be his successor as goddess of the harvest.
Poseidon has the fear of dark, closed places due to his trauma of being locked in Kronos' stomach. During his first centuries ruling the ocean, he cannot stay in his kingdom at night because the realm gets extremely dark and it paranoid him. Poseidon can't go to the deep trenches either.
To cope with his fear, Poseidon's bedroom is filled with bioluminescent algae and jellyfish.
After escaping Kronos' stomach, Hera was sent to take refuge at Oceanus and Tethys' place. Around this time, she became besties with Amphitrite (I see Amphi as a daughter of Nereus but she is close with the other sea deities too)
Thetis and Hera's friendship is underrated. Hera, Thetis, and Amphitrite have occasional girl's nights where they ditch their spouses to spend time together.
As besties Hera and Amphitrite share the same taste in men *looking at Zeus and Poseidon*
Hera and Amphitrite were not happy when Zeus married off Thetis. Oh boy, there were a lot of screaming and fighting for Thetis' behave.
It was very surprising when Thetis later made her husband Peleus immortal (there is a version of that lol)
Zeus and Poseidon created the electric eel and other aquatic animals that produce electricity. The purpose? Ask them.
When Hebe was training to become the cupbearer of the gods, Zeus watched over her and gave her tips from time to time. He used to be the cupbearer of Kronos, too.
I am seriously contemplating on whether Poseidon have a thing for Odysseus or not. Like in "I want to fuck you up both ways".
Hades doesn't outright ban the others from coming to the Underworld. The reason he doesn't like them visiting often is because some will ask (read: screaming and crying at) him to resurrect their favorite mortals.
Hades adopted Cerberus some times after Typhon (Cerberus' bio father) was defeated and the doggo had nowhere to go. From then on Cerberus was living in luxury in the Underworld with the only job is to guard the door.
Hades has a messed up sense of humor after centuries of dealing with the dead, and Persephone got infected as well. If you ask Hades "Can you give me a hand?" he will give you an actual hand.
Hades x Persephone x Minthe OT3 is real.
Hades isn't some gloomy dark man. Yeah, he wears black a lot but also with gleaming gems and fine jewelries (you know, god of precious minerals and all).
You don't believe me? Here's the testimony:
Tumblr media
(tfw your husband rocks his dress prettier than you :DDD)
The three kings didn't draw lots to determine who will rule which realm. During the Titanomachy, they grew fond over their future kingdom and showed hints of belonging to them.
Poseidon's first hint of becoming King of the Sea is that he makes lots of sea puns. Like, a lot.
They also don't have total rule over their kingdoms. Their authority is above all but still under the Primordials of their respective realms (Zeus is under Nyx, Poseidon under Pontus, Hades under Tartarus). Every time they make major changes in their kingdom, they have to consult the Primordials first.
Demeter isn't officially crowned ruler of the Mortal Realm but they all know she is in charge of the whole place.
Even though the Big Six preside over lots of domains, they don't always tend to each one themselves but have lesser deities like dryads, naiads, nepheles, etc. to assist them while they act like the head directors.
The marriages of the three kings and queens are more about political power than love. It's not that they don't have some feelings for each other though.
When they were young and Zeus is courting Hera, he once put on a peacock tail to woo her.
Demeter is married to Leto and they raised Persephone, Artemis, and Apollo together. I don't take objection.
All of the second-generation Olympians were taken care of by Hestia at least one time.
Do not mistake Hestia's dislike of violence for her incapability of inflicting violence. She can cause more damage than your mental health is prepare for.
Hestia doesn't yell or hit others, but disappointing her is the biggest crime.
Demeter makes the best vegetable dishes, roasts, soups, anything. Kids love veggies because of her. She can make you love broccoli with one meal.
Headacanon but also true myth: Demeter adopted and raised lots of kids on her own. Many of them later became her companions or spread the agricultural knowledge they learned from her to humanity. They all love mama Demeter.
Hera treats her daughters better than her sons, but it's because she is learning from her mistakes in bringing up Ares and Hephaestus. She isn't the best but she is trying everyday.
Zeus doesn't hate Ares, but what he reflects. Ares is a raw reminder of a darker side of Zeus that he'd rather pretend doesn't exist.
I've made this joke before but it's still relevant: The only thing more complicated than advance mathematics is Zeus and Hera's relationship with Ares.
Zeus' favorite children are Athena and Apollo, obviously. His least favorite (as in he doesn't care enough compared to others) are Ares and Persephone.
Iris and Chloris/Flora are not straight because of Hera, but they know they won't have any chances with her.
Zeus' first lover is Aëtos, an earth-born man who was his childhood friend when he lives in Crete.
In the modern world, the lock screen of Hera's phone has the picture of her family being happy together. And her home screen is the pic of Zeus in a Pikachu onesie.

Fossil Novembirb 15: Oasis in the Desert
Tumblr media
Xenerodiops by @iguanodont
We FINALLY get to an ecosystem that isn't in Europe, North America, Antarctica, or Oceania - it's Jebel Qatrani Time!
(If you are as appalled as I am at the low sampling rates of fossil localities in Asia, South America, and Africa, welcome to the club, and support paleontologists who are from and work in countries from those continents!!!)
The Jebel Qatrani Formation is an ecosystem from Egypt at the end of the Eocene through the early Oligocene. It showcases the tropical forests, swamps, and marshes that existed at this time, emptying into the Tethys Sea. A wet and humid environment, it would have been a weird mixed ecosystem, with both the old and the new coexisting on the riverbanks. And, like in the forests and plains of Oligocene Europe, we see many modern bird groups show up for the first time here - and also very similar to their living relatives! This is a departure from the mammals in the region, which were unique and weird for the time period (though early members of modern groups are found here, too).
Tumblr media
Palaeoephippiorhynchus by Bubblesorg
Being a wetland and humid environment, the main feature of the avifauna here are aquatic birds - many of which have close relatives today. Palaeoephippiorhynchus is the oldest known fossil stork, and was remarkably similar to the living Saddle-Billed Stork - even having the same upcurved bill. While it's uncertain if they're close relatives or not, it is possible that living Saddle-Bills are similar to this ancient form. There was also a mid-sized heron, a bird extremely similar to living Black-Crowned Night Herons, and Xenerodiops - a heron with a pointed and strong bill, curved downward - good for grabbing onto prey. It was a very sturdy, robust bird - even for a heron.
In addition, there was Goliathia - the fossil Shoebill! This bird had legs much like the living shoebill, and was similar enough in the limbs that it might be in the same genus! It probably lived very similarly to living shoebills, feeding on fish in the wetlands around it. What its beak would have looked like is uncertain - the closest living relative to the Shoebill is the Hammerkop, which has a very different skull. What their ancestral skull was, or what Goliathia's was, remains a mystery.
Tumblr media
Goliathia by Antonio Rares Mihaila
But if you think I'm done with the water birds, you're very wrong - this is just the beginning! There was also an indeterminant cormorant, which had a very hooked and tapered beak; birds similar to living crowned cranes and others like living flufftails; early jacanas like Janipes which was bigger than all living jacanas but still had the large feet for floating on vegetation, showcasing the vegetation in these wetlands was sturdy enough to hold it up; other early jacanas smaller in size as well like Nupharanassa; and of course -
The Flamingos! Well, yes and no. There was an indeterminate crown-flamingo (ie in the group that all living flamingos are in), a bit bigger than a living lesser flamingo. But there was also Palaelodus - one of the "Grebe-Flamingos" or "Swimming-Flamingos", a long-lasting group of birds that first appear in the early Oligocene and lasted until possibly the Pleistocene! They looked superficially similar to living flamingos and were more closely related to them than to grebes, but they did have some similar characteristics to grebes as well - specifically having less of a kink in the neck, shorter lower legs, and flatter limb bones like those in grebes. They also had webbed feet, which would have allowed for diving or swimming. It also had a straight, conical bill, very unlike the bill of living flamingos.
Tumblr media
Palaelodus by @alphynix
There were also perching birds, such as an early turaco very similar to the living genus Crinifer; and early eagles, ospreys, and other birds of prey that haven't really been named - mainly because they are very similar to living species, but so distant in time it seems unlikely they'd be in the same genus still... right? One, very similar to the living sea eagle, was found near the shore - indicating a similar ecology to its living relative. Another was almost identical to the living osprey, just smaller in size. And another was similar in size to living ospreys, but more robust than them. This place was filled with raptors!
Of course, I can't ignore the metaphorical elephant in the room. One of the most mysterious birds of the Jebel Qatrani is Eremopezus, a bird that has similarities to so many different groups of birds that its exact position is still a mystery. At this time it is thought to be a Palaeognath, possibly closely related to ostriches or maybe elephant birds - as the volant Lithornithids start to disappear, ratite-like Palaeognaths become more and more common. It was flightless, and probably lived similarly to modern ostriches and other ratites - as a a large herbivore, probably taking advantage of the wetland landscape and the abundance of food.
Tumblr media
Eremopezus by @thewoodparable
Jebel Qatrani is such an important formation because it sheds light on the evolution of even more bird groups than those we see in former Laurasia (North America + Eurasia). And it is possible that many lineages we still have in Africa today have been around for thirty million years - and may have been very similar in ecology and appearance during that whole time. Given living birds react to changing climates by shifting with the ecosystems, it's possible that these lines of birds similarly followed the migration of wetlands and other habitats during the climate change to come, persisting to this day across the continent.

Fossil Novembirb: Day 16 - Among The Giants
Tumblr media
During the Oligocene epoch, 33-23 million years ago, the landscape of Mongolia was as endlessly vast and wild as today. Forests were rare in this part of the world, instead there were shrublands, savannahs and deserts there. This landscape was the realm of giants, like the Paraceratherium of Walking With Beasts fame. Birds were also living in this land of giants, and some were already adapting to it.
Heterostrix: A small early owl, roughly the size of modern pygmy owls. But despite its small size, it was a capable predator of large insects, lizards and mammals, even birds as large as itself.
Agnopterus: One of the earliest known true flamingoes. Little is known of this bird, but it likely fed on tiny crustaceans filtered from the water, as do modern flamingoes.
Sonogrus: One of the flightless paleognath birds that was closely related to ostriches. This fleet footed herbivore belonged to the group known as paragruids.
Ergilornis: Another stem-ostrich in the group known as ergilornithids. The inner toe of these birds was reduced in size to allow for more efficient running.
Caspiodontornis: One of the few pelagornithids known from Asia, this pseudotoothed giant flew above the remnants of the ancient Tethys Sea.

Protogenoi 2: The Castration of Ouranos
Gaia (earth) and Ouranos (heavens) lays together, giving birth to the twelve Titans, the three Cyclopes, and the three Hecatonchires; with their hundred arms and fifty heads. But these last children Ouranos despises, and forces them trapped deep under Gaia in Tartarus, depriving them of light. Gaia, groaning in pain, creates a jagged toothed sickle from adamant, and begs her children to punish Ouranous. Only one child musters the courage: the Titan Cronus, who lies in wait and castrates his father with the weapon. The bloody drops falling to earth birth the Erinyes (goddesses of vengeance/Furies), armored giants, and Meliad (ash tree nymphs) Ouranos’ bloody testicles plummet to the sea, where from the surrounding foam is birthed the goddess of love, Aphrodite, followed by her attendants; Eros and Desire.
Here we have the first of a reoccurring theme in Greek myth of a son overthrowing the authoritarian father; which will happen again when the son of Cronus, Zeus, overthrows his father in an epic war called the Titanomachy. There was a prophecy that a child born from Zeus and his first wife, Metis would overthrow him, so Zeus swallows a pregnant Metis, but eventually gives birth to Athena from his head.
The 12 Titans arepowerful deities which personify natural elements. The six males are Cronus (god of time) Oceanus (Ocean and rivers) Coeus (intellect) Hyperion (heavenly light) Crius (constellations) and Lapetus (mortality). The six females are Rhea (fertility) Themis (justice) Mnemosyne (memory) Phoebe (prophecy) Tethys (sea) and Theia (sight). The 3 Cylopes are Argos, Brontes, and Steropes and are known for their craftsmanship skills, forging such powerful weapons as Zeus’ thunderbolts and Hades helmet of invisibility. The 3 Hecatonchires are Cottus, Braireos, and Gyes. With their hundred arms and fifty heads, they are feared for their terrible strength. The Hecatonchires go on to assist the Olympians in the Titanomachy, and in the aftermath, are appointed guards of the imprisoned Titan siblings in Tartarus.
