It was a tough decision, deciding to either go to the forest or speak to Caramel Arrow Cookie. You didn't want to go and bother Pastry Cookie, knowing that she still needed time. Her faith had been shaken heavily when the Frost began.

Your shoes crunch the snow on the ground that had been steadily collecting for the past hour or so now. Lamps with Pitaya Dragon Cookie's fire illuminate the forest.

Odd, they must have done that while you were speaking with Black Raisin Cookie and Pancake Cookie.

As you walked through the kingdom, you paused, spotting.. something in the tree-line.

it actually is a little bit of that too!

i think a great part of orion's character arc in this au would be about him learning that him being a prime since birth doesn't make him especially fit to lead and it shouldn't have to. he can learn to be a good leader and he has the potential to be a great one, but it's not an inherent talent he gets just because it's his birthright.

and i think in this au orion would struggle a lot more with being a leader than he does in canon because here it's something that it's being imposed on him rather than something he chooses. here the high guard is actively looking at him for direction and for him to take the lead now that he's back with them, when he's barely coping with the truth of who he is and the grief of everything he lost.

and he tries because he feels like he has to accept the responsibility he's being given, he feels like he has to step into the role the high guard wants him to, he feels like he has to live up to the expectations people have of him.

if being a prime made him especial enough to be "different" than the others around him, then surely it made him capable enough to be the leader the high guard wants him to be, right?

no. it really did not.

i think his first attempt at leading (which would probably be the raid at the high guard hideout? still thinking about it) is absolutely terrible. it ends up a mighty disaster that has people reeling because no one expected him to fail so miserably.

this is at once the first crack in the high guard's devotion to their last prime, the first blow to orion's belief that being a prime makes him inherently better than others and the first step for him to learn how to actually be someone worth following.

he has to learn that even if he's a prime he's still. just a guy. and that's okay. he'll have to put in the work to be better but he's also not an irremediable failure for not being perfect right out of the gate.

tbh an important part of my take on the 'don't be like Sentinel' question is that hours earlier D16 had very decidedly assumed leadership of the High Guard, after which any attempt at resolving his very understandable personal trauma via murder was also, on a wider affects-everyone/your-new-power-means-something scale, inherently going to count as a military coup.

So I'm rereading Trials of Apollo, bc it's been a while and I never finished the series, and I want to catch up to the current stuff. And when I read it the first time, I guess I listened to the audiobook, but I forgot about that until very recently.

So while I'm reading the physical copy, the narrative voice in my head sounds a lot like Dorian Storm. And I'm like... that's weird, why is my brain giving Apollo Dorian's voice? Oh well.

And so I kept reading, but I kept hearing Apollo's voice as Dorian. So I was like... let me check on something. I honestly didn't even remember that I listened to the audiobook at all, much less who read it. But apparently it was narrated by none other than Robbie Daymond. And I listened to it way before he came to Critical Role, and I had no idea who he was at the time. So this was wild, that I somehow remembered that without actually remembering it. Brains are weird.

You know you shouldn't be doing this, walking out alone. You should maybe have brought Mala Sauce Cookie, or someone else, but you can't find yourself to bother them. It's your fault that they're all like this. You failed them, so you must act quickly.

As you carry the lantern, the snow blowing through the trees and shaking off the leaves, you feel chills creeping up your back. You quicken your step, wanting to get to the quarantine shelter as soon as possible.

Finally, a 1:1 comparison between bomb and baby! Riza and Roy vs Penny and Jaune: refusing aid and choosing to die

The situation is dire in both scenes. In one, the gold tooth doctor has Riza's throat slit to force Roy to become the final sacrifice Father needs to open the Portal of Truth. The other, Cinder has whittled down the fighting force to three, taken the Staff of Creation, and has dealt a major blow to Penny. Roy and Jaune have the power to save them, but both Riza and Penny plead to die to prevent widespread tragedy

While the scenes are similar on the surface, the quality difference becomes quite stark once you dig into the details

Setup

It's been well established that Roy and Riza are each other's most important person, to the point of extreme codependency. Their bond is forged in fire and sand and blood. There is no Roy without Riza or Riza without Roy. That's what makes this scene so intense: there is no scenario in which they both make it out

Penny's only real connection is Ruby, who's already fallen into knockoff Wonderland. The emotional foundation is missing. The only one able to react to her demise is Jaune, and it's more annoying than heartbreaking due to the next comparison

The Men

Roy has only two choices: perform human transmutation or watch Riza die. Even if he or Scar managed to escape the soldiers' holds, they're not doctors. They couldn't save Riza themselves no matter how much they wanted to, not with a wound that severe. He needs the help of the enemy to save the woman he loves

Jaune is not pinned. Jaune is not engaged in combat. Jaune is the healer. He has the ability to cart Penny off to (what he believes to be) safety as well as backup fighters who can cover him. He chose not to for seemingly no reason

(The visual of Penny's wound does not communicate that this is a fatal blow nor can Penny's words be taken at face value. Like a child taking their first tumble on gravel and wailing at the sight of their scraped knee, she's experiencing her first injury in a flesh-and-blood body. Of course, she thinks she's dying! It hurts in a way she's never known! She's used to analytics and presented calculations, not screaming nerves and weeping blood)

The Women

Riza is consistently shown to be a badass under all sorts of pressure, even keeping cool while being threatened by Pride, by far the strongest and most terrifying of the Homunculi. When she gets grappled by the soldier, it's because her gun jammed at the worst moment, something guns are wont to do

Even when her throat is slit, Riza still fights. She's keeping pressure on the wound and using what could be her final words to tell Roy not to do it. She remains calm enough while actively and definitely dying to signal Roy that help is on the way

Penny, on the other hand, gets hit because she didn't move after Cinder's attack, instead getting distracted by Weiss's startled shout when the fire separates them. (Why did the fire move like that? I don't think that's how fire works.) It's ridiculous to watch this woman who was literally built for combat be taken out by freezing at the wrong moment. Had this been a consequence of her body being made anew, it would have landed better, but it wasn't. They made Penny incompetent to make the plot happen

To make matters worse, her reasoning is about choice and her apparent lack thereof. Even if we ignore the earlier seasons where she literally snuck out to traipse around Vale and had a plan to transfer to Beacon, Penny's entire thing this volume was about her identity. She's the protector of Mantle, she's the Winter Maiden, she's the daughter of a desperately protective father, she's a girl who wants her friends to get along. Penny is being pulled in so many directions, each headed by someone she loves, that she's unable to figure out who she is and what she should do. The only thing that took away her ability to choose was the hacking virus, which isn't enough to overwrite her actual arc's theme

Payoff

Roy is rewarded for listening to Riza. They're saved by the chimeras and Mei, who loses her chance to gain a Philosopher's Stone in order to do so. Several people made selfless choices and worked together to save Riza's life. In fact, Riza owes her life to a long, complex line of domino events that ensured all these characters would be in the right place at the right time

Jaune? Gets more man pain and a trip to Wonderland despite not being a titular character. Ruby doesn't even get to learn that Jaune is the reason Penny's dead! (She supposedly learned off screen but I don't listen to words of god. I watched V9 for this one moment and was left with Chekov's blue balls.) Literally nothing of value comes out of Penny's death. Ruby's sadness over her gets swept under the rug the moment Summer starts to get sprinkled in, like salt in a wound

Okay, ik how hard it feels when nothing is showing up....like, you’re out here affirming, visualizing, being that version of yourself and doing all the things, and life’s just looking at you like "nah, not yet." And it’s frustrating as hell. But listen, this is exactly when you have to double down.

See, manifestation isn’t about what’s in front of you..it’s about what’s going on inside you. Your 3D reality? Old news. Everything you’re seeing right now is just a delayed reflection of past thoughts and beliefs.

That’s why it feels like nothing’s changing. But the second you start thinking differently, reality has no choice but to shift. It’s literally law.

That’s the thing..persisting doesn’t mean waiting. It means you’re so locked into your end state that you refuse to accept anything else.

The key? Stop checking. Stop looking around for proof. Stop thinking "but when?" and just be the version of you who already has it.

If you had it right now, would you be stressing? Nah. You’d be chilling. So chill.

But what to do when doubts hit?

When you start thinking "ugh, this isn’t working?" Flip that thought instantly. Be delusional if you have to.

If your mind starts saying "this is impossible," correct it like, wtf brain? This had already happened are you dumb or what????

If your brain says then why tf I can't see it, tell it cause you don't have eyes that's why you can't see it, I have eyes and I am literally seeing it cause this has already happened dumbass. :|

You have to be stubborn. Treat anything that contradicts it like background noise...irrelevant, meaningless, not your problem.

Dick didn't know shit, lmao!! "Because I knew you'd make the right one" my ass lol.

Let's rewind two minutes shall we:

Dick: "Tim... Listen... There are no easy answers... But you have the right to make the choice for yourself." || Dick (internal narration): "No-win. If I stop him, I don't trust him. If he goes through with it, I shouldn't have trusted him. C'mon, Tim..."

He doesn't know what choice Tim is going to make, whether his grief will overcome him and he'll take the Lazarus water or not, and has in fact been physically fighting Tim this entire issue to stop him by force. But ultimately he knows it's Tim's right to choose for himself, and decides to hope, and have faith in his brother.

And he has that faith rewarded, and reaffirms it afterward, despite the fact that he wasn't sure.

And paralleling that moment of "yes of course I knew you had it":

Red Robin (2009) #12 Dick: "How'd you know? How did you know I'd be there to save you?" || Tim: "You're my brother, Dick. You'll always be there for me."

TIM DIDN'T KNOW SHIIIIIIIIT HGKLJDKFLSD

At least not consciously! Being caught by Dick is certainly not something he planned for, as he seems to be trying to imply.

Again, rewind:

Tim (internal narration): "I did it. I saved the people he loved. I saved everything he worked so hard to build. No compromises. He won't say anything, he never does. But I know. I know that Bruce will be proud of me. Not a bad day." || Tim: (in the midst of pASSING TF OUT) || Dick: (swoops in and catches him)

Tim may not have actually known that Dick would be there. But that catch... A falling Tim being caught by Dick is a motif that occurs over and over and over across the years of their relationship. Why do I feel like there's a part of Tim, faint as he faded out, and much stronger when he woke up, that went, "Oh, it's Dick - of course if it was anyone, I knew it would be Dick"?

After their conflicts and miscommunications in this arc, after Tim sweeping back into town and explaining not a single thing as he races to thwart Ra's, despite Dick's frustrated pleas, after cutting Dick off with a simple, "Batman...trust me," and Dick's responding, "Of course"....

Tim feeling like he knew, even if he didn't know, or plan, or expect. Because that's his brother. And choosing to express that trust, after Dick chose to trust him...

Just. Dick and Tim. Verbally reaffirming their faith in each other, even after in-the-moment doubts. BROTHERS. My emotions.

i caved and got dbh for my pc (despite already having it for my console) and honestly it's nice to be able to have have my monitor so close to me and be able to really just stare at all the details in the gallery (i may have spent an obscene amount of time staring at each character model)

here's some details i noticed about connor's model

firstly, wtf is going on with his shoes. like does it have laces???? is it just a slip-on??? I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE TOPS OF THE SHOES LOOK LIKE. also why are his jeans unhemmed?????

at the bottom of his jacket there's the two little dark grey rectangles that honestly i never really noticed and i don't think i've ever included it in my art bc my brain just erases them from my brain. it's such a random design choice and i can't decide if i hate them or not.

also why tf does he have two random button holes on the front of his jacket??? his jacket doesn't have buttons???? i cannot fathom why these exist or what their purpose is

never really took the time to analyze connor's jacket so closely and i love the detail of the different materials on his jacket. like the tessellated triangle motif throughout his jacket clearly being some sort of synthetic material compared to the cotton/wool fibers

also i love the seam detail on his sleeve? like i love how it's not just one straight line but adds more shape and design to his cuff.

i love the texture on the top back half of connor's jacket. it reminds me of carpet or those really textured couches. it's like some type of corduroy likely or something. i wanna touch it. also the cyberlife branding right under the ANDROID text how did i never notice that??

if you look at the inner lining of his white collar, it has a darker liner on the inside. i don't think you typically see that on white button-ups???

lastly LOOK AT HIS NECK MOLES. HE'S GOT SO MANY LITTLE NECK MOLES. and after extensive zooming in and out and looking at it from all angles, i have determined that he has a little tiny mole on the back of his right ear on the rim. idk if you can see it in these screenies BUT IT'S THERE I SWEAR TO YOU. he's also got the little divot some ppl have on their ears near the top of his ear.

anyway, uhm, yeah i totally haven't spent more time staring at the character models than i have spent playing the actual game

i was also staring at kara's and markus' models and might post my thoughts observations on those at another time. but for now we got connor.
