Canon vs. AU Stories

So when it comes to fanfic, I have more experience with canon stories, but I enjoy reading and writing both canon and AU depending on the premise. For example, reading a firefighter!Dean story (and my love of Chicago Fire and other procedurals) led me to write Smoke Eater, my first full SPN AU story.

Writing an AU is more challenging in my opinion, because you're doing more extensive worldbuilding and character building than stories in a canon storyverse. Smoke Eater was much more challenging for me to write than Never Say Goodbye, for example, which is a soulmate AU within the canon SPN world.

A Book Maybe?

Second, do you only write fanfic or do you do your own personal writing too? I fully believe you could (and should) write a novel someday if you desired! You're so talented and I'd love to see what you could come up with.

Yes, I've actually been working on a novel for the past couple of years. I've taken a break from it since I've been writing so much fanfic lmao. But it's actually a a fantasy/romance. (Think Bridgerton and Howl's Moving Castle meets GoT, with less violence, lots of drama, and a bit more magic lol.) I had a major breakthrough in my draft and outline a few weeks ago, so my goal is to finish it this year! 💕💕

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this cowboy sheriff with all my heart and soul, and he would undoubtedly treat me right (once we got him into therapy for some of his trauma).

But...

Dean has held my heart the longest out of these three. He's flawed and has trauma beyond belief, but I'd love to give him the loving, comforting, supportive relationship he always deserved on the show. (And then fix that fucked up ending for sure.)

And for that reason, I'd have to marry Dean.

@luci-in-trenchcoats I would also love to hear your thoughts on writing canon vs. AU, since you've written so much of both. What's your favorite, and which do you find more challenging?

Try list any Octo-Agents and think of an Episode you Think give them a Shining Moment

W O O F this took a while– I was thinking long and hard about this because there are SO MANY good moments and episodes 😅, and so many agents– it was difficult, but I’m happy with my answers 👀

Ranger Marsh’s Shine Episode is definitely The Monitor Lizards. I LOVE this episode, it’s one of my favourites in the whole series so far—not just because of the events in it, but as a concept. I LOVE the callback to the Great Swamp Search!! I watched the 2nd season blind, and seeing all these familiar faces was SUCH a fun surprise. It’s good for Ranger Marsh as a character, because it actually shows him doing his job as a Ranger, not as an Octo-Agent. It also reinforces the fact that he truly cares for and is friends with these creatures, even if they are invasive, and that he's willing to travel to check in on them. This is another episode that also proves (to me) that the writers know they’re dealing with an older audience for the show, and are more likely to delve into solid lore and continuity. This episode makes me really hopeful for more of that.

Natquik’s Shine Episode, WITHOUT QUESTION, is The Red Fox. Honestly I feel like I don’t need to explain why, but I will because I like talking ✨: Natquik is my favourite Octo-Agent, but overall we haven’t actually gotten that many episodes dedicated to him yet. The Red Fox gives us a close and personal look into what Natquik is like by himself (I love episodes where characters are alone 👀), how he deals with problems (by ignoring them until they get worse—which is interesting... *stares at Barnacles*...), and even hints toward his family, by showing us his family portraits, and leaving us wondering, “Where are they?” – There are so many moments I love in this episode, from when he first discovers the kits, decides to help them stay warm, rushes to protect Barnacles, to his bittersweet goodbye at the end. It’s all so perfect.

Tracker absolutely shines in The Missing Lake. Honestly, he shines a LOT in Above and Beyond, considering he never got his own episode in the main series, and was only in Operation Deep Freeze for two scenes. AnB has been really good to Tracker, and I’m so grateful they decided to make him an Agent. The Missing Lake sticks out to me the most, because for the most part he is by himself (and I’ve already mentioned my love for that <3), and unlike all his other episodes, we get to really see him be responsible and use his Polar Scout skills in action. He’s often portrayed as a follower, who just goes along with whatever he's told to do, but he takes charge twice in this episode: when he offers to help Rowan, and when he stays behind to save Buck. Love that for him.

Calico Jack. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Calico Jack....... I could talk forever about this funky old cat man. He doesn’t just shine, he GLOWS in every episode he’s in—but alas, for the sake of this post I will be focusing on The Harlequin Duck. I love the showing of his gentle parental instincts in this episode, and his singing; since we know he canonically has a theme song, that I headcanon he wrote himself. I think far too much, and often, about how he legit panicked when he realized the egg was missing. How his first instinct was to hide that fact from Captain Barnacles. He was terrified, having a full blown panic attack on screen. He apologizes to the mother duck with such genuine solace, and promises to get it back “On [his] honour as a pirate!” ...Which is extremely significant to me, considering Kwazii was the first character to EVER say the phrase: “On me honour as an Octonaut!” in The Flying Fish after Inkling’s book was lost – and of course as a final touch, I adore seeing him work with Pete to get the egg back. The way he tosses the egg in the air, fully trusting that Pete will catch it... they’re so in sync, just as pirate and parrot are meant to be ;)

Paani... I feel like there’s so much more to him than what we’ve seen so far, it almost feels unfair to assign him a “Shine Episode”. So, instead of highlighting a single episode, I’ll quickly talk about three that stick out (PS: you might sense a theme 🤣):

The Barnacle Geese - Uncle Paani. I like the “I’ll be my own uncle” joke, and the Edgar Allen Poe reference. I think Paani’s determination to help the chick (who doesn’t seem to want help) is nice to watch, and helps to prove his worthiness as an Agent—which is always fun considering his hesitance when Barnacles tried to recruit him in S1E1. In a way, this episode also makes Paani seem more like Barnacles. See my old post analyzing the show’s intro. (*Stares at the episode title* 👁️👁️)

The Arabian Camels - Take a shot of cocoa every time I mention my love for episodes where characters are forced to be by themselves. This one is especially interesting to me though, because we know that Paani was alone, for a very long time, before he met the Octonauts. He has no trouble working and getting by alone, and we get to see him exhibiting that, while being out of his element (a dry desert) at the same time; and that’s really cool.

The Lonely Frog - ...Y’know how they constantly make the Octonauts/Agents meet creatures with similar issues to them? Yeah. *Stares at the episode title.* *Stares at the end scene where he says “Kinda like when I met you guys!” before obnoxiously jumping into the lake, in response to Shellington+Peso saying “They never even knew each other existed before! [...] and now it’s like they’ve known each other all their lives!”* *STARES MORE AT THE EPISODE TITLE,,* *wonders how long Paani was actually alone before becoming an Agent...*

Pinto, where art thou? He wasn’t in S2 at all, which was a bit disappointing since we just saw him get an Octowatch in S1. I would’ve expected him to be pressing that button every chance he got, giving us a “Penguin who cried Octoalert” episode. But anyway,, The Curious Penguin is the PERFECT episode for Pinto. It shows his personality really well, and I love how his distractions and the things he learns and discovers help him to save the day in the end. I think Pinto (just like Kwazii) is a good portrayal of ADHD, and how he just needs to be in the right environment to succeed. Each time Pinto messes up or loses focus, isn’t because he was left alone and couldn’t be trusted—it’s because he was left alone and understimulated. So when he’s thrown into a sudden high-stakes situation, all of his focus hones in on the moment, and he’s able to save Dashi and Paani by himself.

AND, because you didn’t say it had to be an Above and Beyond moment, I want to throw some love at The Oarfish episode from the main series. In this episode, Pinto no longer views Peso as “less” than an Octonaut, and is so excited to watch him do his job—it’s really cute!! His impulsivity is once again a positive thing—granted, it seems to annoy Peso a little, but when you think about it he kinda saved the day by being impulsive. He sounded the Octoalert without permission, which let the captain know to come back before their radio signal cut out, and by being unafraid of the “monster” and swimming outside, he was able to discover what the problem was so that Peso could help. He did good.

Pearl.... I love Pearl a lot, but I can’t think of one specific episode that comes to mind for her. I love The Pupfish because it introduces Peri to AnB, and I love how he teaches her how to tie a knot, so she can save the algae (and Glen). I like The Bison episode because it’s interesting watching her not doing something with algae for once, and The Pink Glacier because her and Kwazii’s dynamic was something I didn’t know I needed, but now I want more of (/p).

Ryla. Possibly controversial opinion: I liked Ryla in The Caves of Sac Actun, more than I like her now in Above and Beyond. I know she’s only gotten 3 episodes so far, but she’s really missing something. Sac Actun gave us lore on her right off the bat: she’s old friends with Dashi, she’s a skilled cave explorer, she’s spunky, she’s purple. AnB hasn’t given us much yet. So far her only shtick is caves, and that’s getting a bit repetitive. Consider every moment she has in Sac Actun as her “Shining Moment”, because honestly that whole movie is a 10/10.

Koshi,,,, she hasn't gotten that much yet, but I'm gonna say The Longfin Eels is her Shine Episode. I like the way she narrates the whole episode, because it's very in-character. Plus we know she’s literally writing about this adventure in her diary as she's telling it, as if it were a mystery book. She reminds me of narrators from 1920s film noirs, and that’s cool. Also! Honorary mention of the scene when she gets her Octowatch: I loved that for her <3

Min is below the cut, because my answer for her includes some very heavy SEASON 5 SPOILERS, including SCREENSHOTS:

All of Min's appearances so far are dear to my heart. However, my favourite has to be her own introductory episode: The Giant Chinese Salamander.

The Rainforest Rescue is another amazing episode for Min—she’s a wonderful character on her own, of course—but I think we can all agree that she and Inkling are very adorable together (no matter how you interpret their relationship).

When Above and Beyond aired on Netflix, there was a lot of confusion around Min, from the younger audience and other fans who hadn’t seen S5. The Giant Chinese Salamander introduces Min with a 20-minute special; showing her in high-stakes action with Kwazii, bonding with the Octonauts, being an all-around Cool Person™, and a flashback of how she met Inkling when they were younger.

She saved his life. He was thrown far inland by a rough storm, and was trapped until she found him. I honestly headcanon that Min partially (if not outright) inspired Inkling to form the Octonauts, and this moment could have literally sealed the fate of EVERYTHING we know.

But! Until S5 comes out, that's all I've got to say~ 👋💝

So, since it's almost *that time of the year* again and I've been wondering about these questions ever since I first read your Mall Santa fic, I'm just gonna ask them now: What made you write it? Like was there one special thing that started it all? Was it inspired by anything? Have you ever or do you work in retail 😅? You wrote everything so realistically that it reads as if you know from your own experience what it's like to work there. Or maybe you're just a damn good writer (which you are in any case). I'll live this fic forever! Thank you for writing and sharing it!

Hello and thank you for asking! Why yes, there was in fact one special thing that started it all and that was a hate comment on someone else's fic that said something to the effect of "HANK IS NOT A SEXY LUMBERJACK HE IS A JOLLY SANTA CLAUS!!!" which, naturally, my immediate thought was "why not both?"

This was in like, March of 2021 so I was like "I have 9 months, I am the slowest writer in the world but I bet I can write a lil somethin where Hank is a mall santa by Christmas" and then promptly forgot about it until mid-November. However, it was originally supposed to just be a oneshot forklift sex fic so I went for it. Once I wrote the opening lines, though, I had to figure out how to get Connor from that state to experiencing the most intense OSHA violation of his life, so obviously it expanded into what is today.

Why forklift sex? Well, believe it or not I do not have a Santa kink, so I had to figure out some way to make it interesting because the typical Santa Baby thing just wasn't doing it for me. As you correctly guessed, I used to work retail and did so for over a decade, so I wanted Connor to work retail logistics just like I did. Working retail is hard and thankless, so I figured. You know. If he doesn't have the means to quit, he should at least get to nut all over the forklift. It's only fair.

But yes, other than the forklift sex itself (TO MY KNOWLEDGE nobody ever had sex in the stockroom) and the fact that my store never had a mall santa, the fic is very heavily informed by my time in retail. There is an unfortunate amount of human piss to clean up. Customers sexually harass you and throw things at you and sign up for the rewards program at the least convenient times. Mariah Carey plays once every 20 minutes starting in October. But, like Connor, I did meet the love of my life there, and I wrote this story because of it, so. Everything was worth it 💖

well it's gotta be bad buddy, doesn't it? the scene itself is an absolute masterpiece, i remember i was flabbergasted and so happy watching it, i loved how dynamic, funny and memorable it is. but the overall wrap up of patpran's story was amazing. the parents kind of casta dark shadow over my happiness but as long as my guys are happy so am i. all the main characters are happy and satisfied with their lives, now having formed a tight friend group of their own. pat and pran make me feel a lot if i think about them too much so let's move on <3 ps. i like to think wai did his fair share of inner self work and apologised sincerely somewhere down the line

in terms of plot smth silly that had me gagged and i still find precious comes to mind - aoki and mio on the swings in episode..i'd like to say 2? 3? of kieta hatsukoi; i'd hate to spoil it for those who still haven't seen it (though it's a jbl staple imo and one of my faves and im desperately recommending it)

ohh, the love is science? hanger scene. this is how you direct a memorable climactic scene! how you script and execute a dialogue so completely in character! this is how you do chemistry! i can barely look at the screen and they're not even being explicit, that scene has got me in such a grip i almost feel like gatekeeping it but i've said it before - the world doesn't deserve markouwen but they deserve the world.. and for that i have to actually promote them lol (i am not gonna show the actual scene cause i want everyone to experience this whole thing for themselves)

i went back to this scene so many times. fun fact, i spent dozens of hours on a waantul post that never came to fruition so this scene was everything to me and more, i've replayed it so many times

to be completely honest there are so many memorable amazing scenes which have beautiful cinematography or express an idea amazingly or made me scream and hit pillows or bawl but i'm not making a rec list (which i have to remind myself every single time i'm answering a faves question hahah) but they are just too many (some of which concentrated in certain shows), i mean i've watched over a 100 bls at this point and things are a blur

Ah, an excellent question! It is no secret that I very much enjoy a multitude of more "unique Pokemon. There are plenty of creatures oozing with unique potential, and yet few have dared to attempt to make artworks of them. Personally, I think that Muk's alolan variant opens up many unique artistic opportunities...! Though, that is just one thought I have... honestly, I would love to commission a painting of my gaggle of Vanilites at some point.

so as you might have guessed I have a soft spot for hickey. so hickey/gibson and hickey/tozer are my faves.

Adding on this i can add the unappreciated and overlooked but with actually a lot of potential ship: gibson/tozer, hear me out: they're in a situationship with the same weird little guy but they're polar opposite (introvert vs extrovert, judgy vs friendly, self-reliant vs loyal, it's-not-personal-but-it's-finished vs get-me-off-these-chains-cornelius!, we'll-be-flogged vs walking to the gallows together aka not wanting trouble vs risking everything) and yet those two clever, practical, peaceful, skilled men fall for the same guy.

I think exactly for those contradictions they can have such an interesting dynamic.

If Billy had more scenes people would appreciate him more. Tozer gets flashed out a lot more, has different interactions and we get to see his character arc. Billy's arc tho happens mostly off-screen. even his talk with irving is off-screen. we don't see how billy reacts AFTER the flogging (it's implied he and hickey didn't interact much and that hickey spent more time with the marines) but then again we see so little from billy's pov one really needs to pay attention to him to notice the shades of his personality.

anyway. i got lost, back to the question: gibson/hickey/tozer is my ot3, because on one side

-> tozer adds a sense of stability to hickey/gibson that they alone don't have.

on the other side

<- gibson is the reality check to hickey/tozer. dont get me wrong but hickey/tozer is also (much slower than hickey/gibson) on a self-destruction path. you know tozer can't say no to hickey until it's too late. So billy would be the canary to the coalmine that can be hickey's lastest scheme.

basically I'm a hickey shipper, with the right setup i'm all for hickey/manson, hickey/irving, and even hickey/hartnell. hickey/goodsir too! i forgot about them

i see why people might enjoy hickey/crozier but i'm not part of the 'fuck that old man' club so i don't actively look up for those.

I can also see the appeal for hickey/jopson, but to me jopson isn't flashed out enough to be interesting. he's just very needy for crozier approval. to me he doesn't carry anything on his own, he's got eldest daughter syndrome and he's the guy from tweeter who says i don't have an opinion on my own, if a beautiful girl tells me to change my mind I will. but for crozier. sorry for the jopson enjoyers. nothing personal, that character doesn't resound with me. i don't have daddy issues.

other ships i enjoy are: tozer/armitage, manson/hartnell, heather/being alive, anyone/hodgson bc hodge is a case study, it's interesting for interpretation. honorable mention goodsir/silna

honorable non-mention bridgens/peglar, bc they're already happy in canon or into a realtionship of some kind so i don't feel the need to explore that more.

Diwa is preferred! I'm not really used to people calling me Jengarie, ngl, but I don't mind it!

What app or program do you use? And which bruses

I use Clip Studio Paint Pro to draw! For animations, it's still CSP Pro but I also stitch the parts (because CSP Pro has limited animation features 😭) and add effects on Adobe Premiere.

For brushes, I tend to change things up every once in a while! I just go for what feels best at the time. Right now, I use block brush! for sketching and SOL for lineart and coloring! (Note: I like to edit the settings on my brushes!)

But the ones that are being posted lately, I was using a different brush then. I'm not too sure anymore, but I think lineart at the time was drawn with Charcoal001 from this charcoal pack.

Not really i wish i did but whenever i try to i always get bored/frustrated. I can laser focus on drawing for hours at a time without getting bored but when it comes to warming up i get annoyed in 10 minutes tops

Also work; I was wondering maybe the reason she is so freaked about work isn’t just cause the situation she is in but maybe the boss there has been awful to her and maybe made some advances so she is scared. Which can then bring us to the best thing; pissed off protective Stucky. No one messes with their baby and gets away with it. No one gets to scare her. At all.

And hmmm good questions!!! I tend to think she just naturally has a fear of the dark…like I think a lot of little ones do! 🥺 but also when she first woke up after being taken, it was dim in the room, which I think frightened her as she had no idea where she was!

On a similar note, it’s scary for her to be alone because she’s in a very strange and new environment. I like to think that though she may not be able to rationalize it, she would almost rather be with them (even though they scare her) than be left alone in an unfamiliar place where she has no idea what will happen next.

Oooooh yes I do love protective and possessive stucky!! I think if her boss were making some type of advances like that, they would have taken her as soon as they noticed it happening because they are super protective of her 🥺. (Plus that person would just not fair well once they’re done with them ya know ya know). I like to think if they saw reader talking to anyone (especially guys imo bc they’re jealous like that) they would immediately be upset and worried the person was trying to make a move on her and probably STALK the other guy too to make she he doesn’t try anything…(they also may or may not have access to her text messages 😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️)

I 100% agree with you, pissed off protective stucky is my JAM and I definitely plan on writing something with that protective theme in the future. ☺️☺️☺️
